Purpose: As few studies have explored the causal relationship between both the triple bottom line (TBL) of sustainability and the lean practices in higher education institutions (HEIs), the purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationships between lean practices and sustainable practices in Brazilian HEIs. Design/methodology/approach: A survey was conducted with 454 public and private HEIs workers in Brazil. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equations modeling were used for data analysis. Findings: The results support the hypotheses of the study that HEI lean practices are positively related to environmental, economic and social practices in HEIs. Practical implications: HEI managers must evaluate the use of lean practices in the organizational processes, to identify their weaknesses and to improve the aspects that influence a balanced TBL of sustainability practices. Social implications: The findings highlight the importance of leadership as a support for the workers, as a continuous improvement practice on a daily basis and a focus on the student as a basic principle of HEI success. Originality/value: This article provides new measurement and structural models to analyze Lean thinking practices as the predictors of sustainability practices. The work could assist any HEI in prioritizing its strategies and actions and to contribute to excellence in decision-making. This study could contribute as a source of empirical data for transferability in other contexts for HEIs.

The business environment is surrounded by economic uncertainties, which shows the need to develop methodological practices that make it competitive, sustainable and innovative. The purpose of this paper is of analysing the relationships between the project management practices, the product and process innovation, and the sustainable competitive advantage in enterprises in Southern Brazil. This research has a quantitative and descriptive character, in which the data were collected through a survey in 226 enterprises in the Activity Sectors of Industrial Manufacturing, Commerce and Services. Data analysis done through the Structural Equation Modelling, we used the following techniques and methods: Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Hypotheses tests. The research showed that enterprises use project management practices and have product innovation and process innovation, which are essential for sustainable competitive advantage. However, the enterprises are moving towards proactive behaviours, since they present innovative actions for their market permanence and competitiveness, once the organisations face constant legal and political enforcement, due to the globalised market. The research shows evidence which may help the enterprises' managers and decision-makers to improve or influence their enterprises' competitive and sustainable performance. With the advent of globalization and access to information, social networks came to be widely used by different generations. However, environmental issues have been causing global impacts, as well as issues of social vulnerability. Environmental awareness awakens new consumption habits, implementing a new socially responsible posture. This study aims to analyze the influence of social networks on environmental awareness and the social responsibility of Baby Boomers, Generations X, and Y, in the regions of South and Southeast Brazil. We use the methodology of quantitative and descriptive research, by means of the Structural Equation Modeling. The results highlight that individuals who are exposed to information (videos, photos, texts) related to social responsibility and environmental sustainability are positively influenced in the formation of social and environmental awareness. However, generation Y presented the lowest means of responses in the search for information on environmental and social issues. This is relevant to society, teaching institutions, government agencies, as well as companies, in order to promote actions and information on social and environmental responsibility, in order to engage Generation Y in sustainable development. The increasing speed of technological innovations has made it easier for students to access information. In this context, education/learning standards have sought to keep pace with a new student profile geared towards the digital environment by introducing new ways of learning that represent a compelling and innovative alternative for the development of student competencies. The study aims to analyse the relationship between innovation in education, engagement for learning and learning, as well as the moderating effect of the gamified method, within the scope of higher education institutions. It is a quantitative research, operationalised through a survey, applied to students of management courses in higher education institutions located in the South of Brazil. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data. The results of the research showed the moderating effect of gamification in the learning process, indicating that students present a higher level of learning when exposed to the teaching method that uses the gamified method. To achieve a higher organizational performance is desirable to ensure the permanence and growth of companies. However, a business environment marked by rapid technological and market changes demands from companies new responses or a combination of different strategies. The purpose of this study was to verify the influence of market orientation on product and process innovation, as well as of these on organizational performance. For this, a survey was carried out, applied to managers and owners of companies in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and the Structural Equations Modeling technique was used to analyze the data. We found positive and significant relationships among the constructs studied, and observed that process innovation contributes more to organizational performance than product innovation. Thus, business managers who seek to stay and grow on the market must invest more in process innovations than in product innovations, as they contribute to cost reduction and product quality enhancement, giving companies a superior organizational performance. A Sustainable Competitive Advantage emerges as an important factor in the perception of value of goods and services, which should be considered as elements of competitive differentiation. This study aims at identifying the relationship between sustainable competitive advantage and organizational performance, as well as measuring the relationship of environmental sustainability and social responsibility as attributes of sustainable competitive advantage. In order to achieve that, a survey was carried out in 1496 different size companies and activity sectors in Brazil. For the data analysis and interpretation we used a structural equation modeling technique. The results indicate that the Sustainable Competitive Advantage construct is an important antecedent of organizational performance because it highlights fundamental attributes for organizations to achieve positive economic consequences. This research contributes to organizational management and to the scientific community with the provision of a framework that assists in the identification of relevant strategic resource features. The mechanical engineering sector is a major environmental impactful, as well as consuming natural resources, generates a series of environmental pollutants. It is highlighted that is increasingly evident environmental and social issues, both in Brazil and in most Western countries. Environmental strategies proposes that new technologies are developed and actions on environmental, ecological and social economy. The Awning Metalmecânica Ltda is a company that has emerged because of the skills and entrepreneurial vision of the owner Rui Awning. After 33 years working in the domestic market the business needed to embrace new markets, it was becoming impossible to compete in the local market and the company had environmental problems. In this direction the company should adapt as quickly as possible, because the pressure from stakeholders influenced the marketing of products. The aim of this teaching case is to propose reflections on the decisions and actions related to environmental management and social responsibility applied to companies Metalworking.
