ABSTRACT. Despite the increasing knowledge in the past years, only minimal attention has been directed to the neuropsychological aspects and the prevalence of cognitive impairment associated with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS). Objective: To describe the frequency and expand the understanding of cognitive dysfunction in RCVS. Methods: The neuropsychological evaluation was performed using a battery consisting of specific neuropsychological instruments that were administered to patients diagnosed with RCVS. A triage was conducted to exclude other potential causes of cognitive impairment. Performance on the tests was treated as a categorical variable, and a cutoff of −1.5 Z-score was adopted to indicate impaired performance. Results: Seven patients diagnosed with RCVS were evaluated, all of whom had a bachelor's degree and normal score in the Mini-Mental State Examination. The average time between diagnosis and neuropsychological evaluation was 1.8 years. Among the patients, 85.6% (n=6) exhibited performance below that of the normal population in at least two of the administered tests. Specifically, 71.4% (n=5) showed alterations in tests from the Psychological Battery for Attention Assessment, with impairment observed in concentrated (n=1), divided (n=3), or alternating (n=4) attention. Furthermore, 28.6% (n=2) demonstrated impairments in the Phonological Verbal Fluency Task, another 28.6% (n=2) exhibited difficulties copying elements of the Rey Complex Figure, and 14.3% (n=1) displayed lower performance in the Five-Digit test, all indicating executive dysfunction. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that cognitive impairment associated with RCVS is more prevalent than previously believed and has not received sufficient attention. Specifically, attention and executive functions are the cognitive domains most significantly impacted by RCVS.

Abstract Hepatic and pulmonary lesions are common in cetaceans, despite their poorly understood viral etiology. Herpesviruses (HV), adenoviruses (AdV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are emerging agents in cetaceans, associated with liver and/or pulmonary damage in mammals. We isolated and molecularly tested DNA for HV and AdV (n = 218 individuals; 187 liver and 108 lung samples) and RNA for HEV (n = 147 animals; 147 liver samples) from six cetacean families. All animals stranded or were bycaught in Brazil between 2001 and 2021. Positive-animals were analyzed by histopathology. Statistical analyses assessed if the prevalence of viral infection could be associated with the variables: species, family, habitat, region, sex, and age group. All samples were negative for AdV and HEV. Overall, 8.7% (19/218) of the cetaceans were HV-positive (4.8% [9/187] liver and 11.1% [12/108] lung), without HV-associated lesions. HV-prevalence was statistically significant higher in Pontoporiidae (19.2%, 10/52) when compared to Delphinidae (4.1%, 5/121), and in southeastern (17.1%, 13/76)—the most industrialized Brazilian region—when compared to the northeastern region (2.4%, 3/126). This study broadens the herpesvirus host range in cetaceans, including its description in pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Further studies must elucidate herpesvirus drivers in cetaceans.

This note compiles recorded strandings of sperm whales on the Brazilian coast. A known total of 95 sperm whales (62 single and one mass stranding of 33 individuals) stranded along the Brazilian coast from 1967-2000. A higher incidence of single strandings was observed in northeastern Brazil ( ~ 05°-17°S). No strandings occurred in lower latitudes ( < 14°S) from June-September. The seasonal and spatial pattern observed by the reported strandings may indicate higher stranding rates in higher latitudes ( ~ 18-25°S) between June and August (winter) and in lower latitudes ( ~ 3-7°S) between January and April (summer and spring). Strandings of smaller sperm whales (3-4.5m) were observed during the austral summer and autumn, indicating seasonality in the birth season. Growth-layer counts of three specimens provide the first data on age of sperm whales for Brazil.

Since 1995, photo-identification techniques have been used to study the marine tucuxis (Sotalia fluviatilis) found in Guanabara Bay (22°50’S, 43°10’W), southeastern Brazil. The bay is surrounded by a metropolitan complex and is the most degraded area of this species’ distribution. From May 1995 to June 2003, 47 photo-identification boat surveys were conducted in the bay. Sixty-nine individuals were identified and catalogued. The results indicate that individual tucuxis have high site fidelity in Guanabara Bay. On average, dolphins were seen for 4.5 consecutive years, with a range of 1 to 8 years. Additionally, calves have remained in the area beyond sexual maturity. Guanabara Bay provides food and breeding grounds for this dolphin population, despite its high degree of degradation. The fact that such a small dolphin population, composed of resident individuals, depends on such a degraded area may pose serious problems for its conservation.

- Abstract

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV; Paramyxoviridae) causes epizootic and interepizootic fatalities in odontocetes and mysticetes worldwide. Studies suggest there is different species-specific susceptibility to CeMV infection, with striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) ranking among the most susceptible cetacean hosts. The pathogenesis of CeMV infection is not fully resolved. Since no previous studies have evaluated the organ-specific immunopathogenetic features of CeMV infection in tissues from infected dolphins, this study was aimed at characterizing and comparing immunophenotypic profiles of local immune responses in lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, spleen), lung and CNS in CeMV-molecularly (RT-PCR)-positive cetaceans from Western Mediterranean, Northeast-Central, and Southwestern Atlantic. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses targeted molecules of immunologic interest: caspase 3, CD3, CD20, CD57, CD68, FoxP3, MHCII, Iba1, IFNγ, IgG, IL4, IL10, lysozyme, TGFβ, and PAX5. We detected consistent CeMV-associated inflammatory response patterns. Within CNS, inflammation was dominated by CD3+ (T cells), and CD20+ and PAX5+ (B cells) lymphocytes, accompanied by fewer Iba1+, CD68+, and lysozyme+ histiocytes, mainly in striped dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. Multicentric lymphoid depletion was characterized by reduced numbers of T cells and B cells, more pronounced in Guiana dolphins. Striped dolphins and bottlenose dolphins often had hyperplastic (regenerative) phenomena involving the aforementioned cell populations, particularly chronically infected animals. In the lung, there was mild to moderate increase in T cells, B cells, and histiocytes. Additionally, there was a generalized increased expression of caspase 3 in lymphoid, lung, and CNS tissues. Apoptosis, therefore, is believed to play a major role in generalized lymphoid depletion and likely overt immunosuppression during CeMV infection. No differences were detected regarding cytokine immunoreactivity in lymph nodes, spleen, and lung from infected and non-infected dolphins by semiquantitative analysis; however, there was striking immunoreactivity for IFNγ in the CNS of infected dolphins. These novel results set the basis for tissue-specific immunophenotypic responses during CeMV infection in three highly susceptible delphinid species. They also suggest a complex interplay between viral and host's immune factors, thereby contributing to gain valuable insights into similarities, and differences of CeMV infection's immunopathogenesis in relation to body tissues, CeMV strains, and cetacean hosts.

- Abstract
E quanto mais cedo o tratamento for feito, melhor será o prognóstico do paciente.

PURPOSE: The neurotrophic factor fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2, bFGF) and Ca++ binding protein S100ß are expressed by the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves and by the satellite cells of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Recent studies have pointed out the importance of the molecules in the paracrine mechanisms related to neuronal maintenance and plasticity of lesioned motor and sensory peripheral neurons. Moreover, cultured Schwann cells have been employed experimentally in the treatment of central nervous system lesions, in special the spinal cord injury, a procedure that triggers an enhanced sensorymotor function. Those cells have been proposed to repair long gap nerve injury. METHODS: Here we used double labeling immunohistochemistry and Western blot to better characterize in vitro and in vivo the presence of the proteins in the Schwann cells and in the satellite cells of the DRG as well as their regulation in those cells after a crush of the rat sciatic nerve. RESULTS: FGF-2 and S100ß are present in the Schwann cells of the sciatic nerve and in the satellite cells of the DRG. S100ß positive satellite cells showed increased size of the axotomized DRG and possessed elevated amount of FGF-2 immunoreactivity. Reactive satellite cells with increased FGF-2 labeling formed a ring-like structure surrounding DRG neuronal cell bodies.Reactive S100ß positive Schwann cells of proximal stump of axotomized sciatic nerve also expressed higher amounts of FGF-2. CONCLUSION: Reactive peripheral glial cells synthesizing FGF-2 and S100ß may be important in wound repair and restorative events in the lesioned peripheral nerves.OBJETIVO: O fator neurotrófico fator de crescimento de fibroblastos-2 (FGF-2, bFGF) e a proteína ligante de Ca++ S100ß são expressos pelas células de Schwann dos nervos e por células satélites do gânglio da raiz dorsal (GRD).

PURPOSE: Reactive astrocytes are implicated in several mechanisms after central or peripheral nervous system lesion, including neuroprotection, neuronal sprouting, neurotransmission and neuropathic pain. Schwann cells (SC), a peripheral glia, also react after nerve lesion favoring wound/repair, fiber outgrowth and neuronal regeneration. We investigated herein whether cell therapy for repair of lesioned sciatic nerve may change the pattern of astroglial activation in the spinal cord ventral or dorsal horn of the rat. METHODS: Injections of a cultured SC suspension or a lesioned spinal cord homogenized extract were made in a reservoir promoted by a contiguous double crush of the rat sciatic nerve. Local injection of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) served as control. One week later, rats were euthanized and spinal cord astrocytes were labeled by immunohistochemistry and quantified by means of quantitative image analysis. RESULTS: In the ipsilateral ventral horn, slight astroglial activations were seen after PBS or SC injections, however, a substantial activation was achieved after cord extract injection in the sciatic nerve reservoir. Moreover, SC suspension and cord extract injections were able to promote astroglial reaction in the spinal cord dorsal horn bilaterally. Conclusion: Spinal cord astrocytes react according to repair processes of axotomized nerve, which may influence the functional outcome. The event should be considered during the neurosurgery strategies.OBJETIVO: Astrócitos reativos participam de vários mecanismos após lesões do sistema nervoso central e periférico, os quais incluem neuroproteção, brotamento neuronal, neurotransmissão e dor neuropática.

The occurrence of renal failure is associated to an increased death risk. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the hypertonic saline solution in patients with decompensated heart failure for renal failure prevention. METHODS: Patients with decompensated heart failure, congestion and hyponatremia participated in the study. In addition to the standard treatment, the patients received hypertonic saline solution and were submitted to clinical as well as laboratory assessment. RESULTS: Nine patients were enrolled in the study. Mean age was 55 + 14.2 years, being 5 male (55.5%) and 4 (44.5%) female patients. All of them presented functional class III-IV of the New York Heart Association (NYHA), and 5 (55.5%) received dobutamine. All of them presented initial creatinine > 1.4 mg/dl. The mean tonicity of the solution was 4.39% + 0.018% (2.5% to 7.5%) and the duration of treatment was 4.9 days + 4.1 days (1-15 days). There were no severe adverse effects; none of the patients presented clinical worsening or neurologic disorders; hypokalemia occurred in 4 cases (44.5%). The comparison of the variables before and after treatment showed a decrease in urea (105 mg/dl + 74.8 mg/dl vs. 88 mg/dl + 79.4 mg/dl; p = 0.03) and increase in the urinary volume (1,183 ml/day vs. 1,778 ml/day; p = 0.03); there was no tendency to creatinine decrease (2.0 mg/dl + 0.8 mg/dl vs. 1.7 mg/dl + 1.0 mg/dl; p = 0.08). Despite the elevation in sodium levels (131 mEq/l + 2.8 mEq/l vs. 134 mEq/l + 4.9 mEq/l) and weight decrease (69.5 kg + 18.6 kg vs. 68.2 kg + 17.1 kg), there was no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION: The use of hypertonic saline solution in patients with decompensated heart failure can be a safe therapeutic method and potentially related to clinical improvement and renal failure prevention.

This experiment was carried out in a vegetation environment at the irrigated agriculture unit of the State University of Maringá, State of Paraná in order to study the effect of three nutritious solutions with distinct electrical conductivities, applied to two different outflows, on the lettuce cultivation. The following production variables were analyzed: number of useful leaves, number of non-useful leaves, and length of the stem. The treatments consisted of a factorial combination of three nutritious solutions with different concentrations (S1=1.2 mS cm-1, S2=2.5 mS cm-1, and S3=0.8 mS cm-1) and two application outflows (O1=1.2 L min-1 and O2=0.8 L min-1) in the cultivation channels. The delineation was performed at random with 3 replications. Thus, the following treatments were used: S1O1 - nutritious solution 1 applied to outflow 1, S1O2 - nutritious solution 1 applied to outflow 2, S2O1 - nutritious solution 2 applied to outflow 1, S2O2 - nutritious solution 2 applied to outflow 2, S3O1 - nutritious solution 3 applied to outflow 1, S3O2 - nutritious 3 applied to outflow 2. The increase in the concentration of the nutrients with different outflows of the solutions did not provide a significant increase in the number of useful leaves. However, when analyzing the solution treatment separately, there were significant differences in the number of non-useful leaves between solutions I and II, in relation to solution III. Solution 1 (CE = 1.8 mS cm-1) provided the longest length of the stem, which was significantly different from the other solutions.

Despite the magnitude of domestic and industrial pollution, fishery yield registered in several landing points at Guanabara Bay, between April 2001 and March 2002 was slightly over 19,000 tons, corresponding to a value of US$ 4.8 million. When considered only the fish directed to the food market, the total catch amounted to about 6,300 tons and a value of US$ 3.7 million. Only a few fish species reached expressive densities compatible with commercial fisheries. Among small pelagic fish, Atlantic anchoveta and Brazilian sardinella were the dominant species, while in terms of demersal fish, croakers, mullets and catfishes comprised the main part of the catch. The absence of landing data previous to the spilling of 1.3 million liters of oil in January 2000 led to claims by fishermen representative organizations of values corresponding to about 50 years of fish harvest in the bay. Possibly, a data collection network could be established in a participative way with the main fishermen local associations. The relatively stabilized fisheries in the bay suggested that reasonable inferences could be made, without, necessarily having a complete coverage of all landing points.

Composition and frequency of hymenopteran parasitoids were studied in an Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex. Maiden plantation and in a native vegetation area with 11 Malaise traps in a transect native vegetation-eucalyptus plantation from March 1997 to March 1998. A total of 2,099 individuals of nine superfamilies and 26 families of this group was collected. The family with the highest number of individuals was Ichneumonidae followed by Braconidae, Scelionidae and Eulophidae with 577, 452, 374 and 185 individuals. Higher number of parasitoids was collected in the vicinity and borders of the native vegetation what demonstrates that fragments of native vegetation intermingled with eucalyptus plantations can be recommended as a strategy for pest management in these plantations.

To investigate the foraging habitats of delphinids in southeastern Brazil, we analyzed stable carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N) isotopes in muscle samples of the following 10 delphinid species: Sotalia guianensis, Stenella frontalis, Tursiops truncatus, Steno bredanensis, Pseudorca crassidens, Delphinus sp., Lagenodelphis hosei, Stenella attenuata, Stenella longirostris and Grampus griseus. We also compared the δ(13)C and δ(15)N values among four populations of S. guianensis. Variation in carbon isotope results from coast to ocean indicated that there was a significant decrease in δ(13)C values from estuarine dolphins to oceanic species. S. guianensis from Guanabara Bay had the highest mean δ(13)C value, while oceanic species showed significantly lower δ(13)C values. The highest δ(15)N values were observed for P. crassidens and T. truncatus, suggesting that these species occupy the highest trophic position among the delphinids studied here. The oceanic species S. attenuata, G. griseus and L. hosei had the lowest δ(15)N values. Stable isotope analysis showed that the three populations of S. guianensis in coastal bays had different δ(13)C values, but similar δ(15)N results. Guiana dolphins from Sepetiba and Ilha Grande bays had different foraging habitat, with specimens from Ilha Grande showing more negative δ(13)C values. This study provides further information on the feeding ecology of delphinids occurring in southeastern Brazil, with evidence of distinctive foraging habitats and the occupation of different ecological niches by these species in the study area.

Top marine predators present high mercury concentrations in their tissues as consequence of biomagnification of the most toxic form of this metal, methylmercury (MeHg). The present study concerns mercury accumulation by Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis), highlighting the selenium-mediated methylmercury detoxification process. Liver samples from 19 dolphins incidentally captured within Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) from 1994 to 2006 were analyzed for total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), total organic mercury (TOrgHg) and selenium (Se). X-ray microanalyses were also performed. The specimens, including from fetuses to 30-year-old dolphins, comprising 8 females and 11 males, presented high THg (0.53-132 µg/g wet wt.) and Se concentrations (0.17-74.8 µg/g wet wt.). Correlations between THg, MeHg, TOrgHg and Se were verified with age (p

Adenine nucleotides through P2Y1 receptor stimulation are known to control retinal progenitor cell (RPC) proliferation by modulating expression of the p57KIP2, a cell cycle regulator. However, the role of Gi protein-coupled P2Y12 and P2Y13 receptors also activated by adenine nucleotides in RPC proliferation is still unknown. Gene expression of the purinergic P2Y12 subtype was detected in rat retina during early postnatal days (P0 to P5), while expression levels of P2Y13 were low. Immunohistochemistry assays performed with rat retina on P3 revealed P2Y12 receptor expression in both Ki-67-positive cells in the neuroblastic layer and Ki-67-negative cells in the ganglion cell layer and inner nuclear layer. Nonetheless, P2Y13 receptor expression could not be detected in any stratum of rat retina. Intravitreal injection of PSB 0739 or clopidogrel, both selective P2Y12 receptor antagonists, increased by 20 and 15%, respectively, the number of Ki-67-positive cells following 24 h of exposure. Moreover, the P2Y12 receptor inhibition increased cyclin D1 and decreased p57KIP2 expression. However, there were no changes in the S phase of the cell cycle (BrdU-positive cells) or in mitosis (phospho-histone-H3-positive cells). Interestingly, an increase in the number of cyclin D1/TUNEL-positive cells after treatment with PSB 0739 was observed. These data suggest that activation of P2Y12 receptors is required for the successful exit of RPCs from cell cycle in the postnatal rat retina.

Mercury is a trace element that is potentially dangerous due its high toxicity and tendency to bioaccumulate in organisms. Currently, high mercury concentrations are seen in the environment especially due climate changes. Studies regarding mercury bioavailability in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean using tuna and tuna-like species are rare. The aim of the present study was to use tuna and tuna-like species (Thunnus atlanticus, Thunnus albacares, Katsuwonus pelamis, Euthynnus alletteratus, Coryphaena hippurus and Sarda sarda) as indicators of the availability of total mercury (THg) in oceanic food webs of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. THg concentrations varied significantly among species for both muscle and liver (Kruskal-Wallis test; H

This thesis studies the effects of the uses of social networks on the political socialization of Brazilian high school students. The goal of the research is to observe how high schoolers address, by their grassroots practices, political subjects on their Facebook profile pages. The question that guided this study is: how do the personal Facebook profile pages contribute to the political socialization of high schoolers? The hypothesis was that youngsters build their opinions and values throughout the process of constructing their digital identities. They search for recognition from the other members of their group or of the group they wish to belong to. These youngsters affirm their political positions and their values by selecting information on internet and retaining those which are necessary for their recognition. The empirical research took place in the northeastern region of Brazil from November 2014 to July 2017, during a period of political polarization regarding Dilma Rousseff's government (Labour Party). Data is drawn from an online ethnography and semi-structured interviews with a group of high schoolers who live in the same town: João Pessoa. The results point that the relevance of social networks for the political socialization of youngsters lies not only on the possibility to be in touch with a great diversity of opinions and world views but also on the fact that they allow the construction of a self image that shapes the political experiences of social media users. The online political participation, specially those of youngsters who expose themselves the most, is linked to their need of having their online identity recognized. The need to preserve a self-image tends to impose a certain organization of values that conform to the demands of the students' target public., La thèse porte sur les effets des usages des réseaux sociaux d’Internet dans la socialisation politique des jeunes au Brésil.

The role of satellite cells, a type of peripheral glia, in the paracrine mechanisms related to neuronal maintenance and plasticity in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) needs to be further investigated. This study employed immunohistochemistry and image analysis to investigate basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF, FGF-2) and S100Beta immunoreactivities in the DRG and sciatic nerve of the rat and mouse. Well-characterized antibodies against bovine (residues 1-24) and rat (residues 1-23) FGF-2 were employed. Furthermore, the state of satellite cell reaction and changes in the FGF-2/S100Beta immunoreactivity were analyzed after axotomy of rat sciatic nerve. Scattered neurons and the majority of the satellite cells of the rat DRG and also Schwann cells of the rat sciatic nerve stained for S100Beta. In the mouse, strong S100Beta was encountered in the majority of sensory neurons and Schwann cells. Moderate FGF-2 (residues 1-24) immunoreactivity was found in scattered small size neurons of the rat DRG. A strong FGF-2 (residues 1-23) immunoreactivity was achieved in the satellite cells of rat DRG. Both FGF-2 antisera showed strong labeling in the mouse DRG sensory neurons. Activated satellite cells of the axotomized DRG possessed increased amount of FGF-2 and S100Beta immunoreactivity as demonstrated by quantitative image analysis. The proximal stump of the lesioned rat sciatic nerve showed increased FGF-2 (residues 1-24 and 1-23) in the Schwann cells, myelin sheaths, and neuronal fibers, without changes in the level of S100Beta immunoreactivity. Results suggested a possible interaction between FGF-2 and S100Beta in activated satellite cells of the DRG, which might trigger paracrine actions in the axotomized sensory neurons.

- Abstract
As culturas primárias foram purificadas e utilizadas em experimentos in vitro e in vivo. The present study aimed the assessment of the trophic and regenerative potential of the Schwann cells (SC) and of the neurotrophic factor PEDF on the spinal cord neurons by means of cultures of those cells in vitro as well as in an experimental model of a contused spinal cord lesion in vivo. SC were cultivated from sciatic nerves fragments of young adult rats. The primary cultures were purified and used in in vitro and in vivo experiments. To evaluate if the SC cultures treated with PEDF provide the trophism of the spinal cord neurons, these were cultivated from spinal cords fragments of new born rats and treated with SC conditional medium (SCCM), of cells pre-treated or not with specifics isoforms of PEDF. The trophic responses were analyzed by the quantification of the cell number, and the area of sprounting and perycaria of the survived neuronal cells in the culture time course using a specific stereological method. In another series of experiment, adults Wistar rats were submitted to a contuse spinal cord lesion in the 10º-11º thoracic level by means of the NYU Impactor and treated with local injection of SC and your CM with the presence or not of the PEDF. In the end of the surgical procedure, the rats were submitted to behaviors testes as the BBB and the CBS during the 6 follow weeks .The spinal cord neuron treatments show that the SCCM, prétreated or not with specifics molecular isoforms of PEDF and this factors by themselves demonstrated trophic and plastic actions with the spinal cord neurons. It was observed that the SCCM exerted a sprouting and trophic effect on the neuronal body of the spinal cord neurons, and that this effect was enhanced when the SCCM was achieved from SC pre-treated with PEDF, and even better when the pures forms of the PEDF was added to the culture. The animals that received the spinal cord lesion and were treated with injection of SC, pre-treated or not with nPEDF, or with the conditioned medium of those cells and the factors nPEDF or coPEDF showed a better functional recovery when compared to the control groups. The results of this study showed that the SC, your conditioned medium and the PEDF play an important role in the spinal cord neurons, allowing the modulation of the functional recovery process of this organ after the trauma.
