Abstract

The new SPIRAL2 LINAC at GANIL delivers light beams (p, d, alpha,…) with very large intensities. In order to exploit these beams in an optimal way, high power target stations are requested. In this contribution, we present such an irradiation station designed to optimize the production of 211At, an alpha emitter of interest for targeted alpha therapy. In order to dissipate at least 10 kW of beam power, a rotating, water-cooled system comprising twelve individual targets has been developed together with a fast and safe extraction mechanism.

Abstract

Several experiments around the world are looking for a new particle, named Dark Boson, which may do the link between the Ordinary Matter (which forms basically stars, planets, interstellar gas...) and the Hidden Sectors of the Universe. This particle, if it exists, would act as the messenger of a new fundamental interaction of nature. In this paper, the underlying Dark Sectors theory will be introduced first. A non-exhaustive summary of experimental studies carried out to date and foreseen in the incoming years will be presented after,including the 8Be anomaly. The last section will provide a status of the New JEDI**** project which aims to investigate the existence or not of a Dark Boson in the MeV range.

3. Fusion process studied with preequilibrium giant dipole resonance in time dependent Hartree-Fock theory

Abstract

The equilibration of macroscopic degrees of freedom during the fusion of heavy nuclei, like the charge and the shape, are studied in the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock theory. The pre-equilibrium Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) is used to probe the fusion path. It is shown that such isovector collective state is excited in N/Z asymmetric fusion and to a less extent in mass asymmetric systems. The characteristics of this GDR are governed by the structure of the fused system in its preequilibrium phase, like its deformation, rotation and vibration. In particular, we show that a lowering of the pre-equilibrium GDR energy is expected as compared to the statistical one. Revisiting experimental data, we extract an evidence of this lowering for the first time. We also quantify the fusion-evaporation enhancement due to gamma-ray emission from the pre-equilibrium GDR. This cooling mechanism along the fusion path may be suitable to synthesize in the future super heavy elements using radioactive beams with strong N/Z asymmetries in the entrance channel., Comment: 15 pages, 19 figures, revised version

Abstract

We investigate the role of deformation on the fusion probability around the barrier using the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock theory with a full Skyrme force. We obtain a distribution of fusion probabilities around the nominal barrier due to the different contributions of the various orientations of the deformed nucleus at the touching point. Abstract

Classical mechanics and Time Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations of heavy ions collisions are performed to study the rotation of a deformed nucleus in the Coulomb field of its partner. This reorientation is shown to be independent on charges and relative energy of the partners. It only depends upon the deformations and inertias. TDHF calculations predict an increase by 30% of the induced rotation due to quantum effects while the nuclear contribution seems negligible. This reorientation modifies strongly the fusion cross-section around the barrier for light deformed nuclei on heavy collision partners. For such nuclei a hindrance of the sub-barrier fusion is predicted., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

Abstract

To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. The differential decay curve method (DDCM) was used to obtain the lifetimes from the RDDS data.

Abstract

Radiative capture reactions on rare targets and prompt spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei produced in the neutron-capture induced-fission of 235U and 241Pu have been performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). The high efficiency germanium (Ge) EXOGAM array has been used, complemented with Ge detectors from GASP and the ILL. LaBr3 detectors from the FATIMA collaboration have also been coupled to EXOGAM to measure lifetimes of lowlying excited states. The measured characteristics indicate very good performances of the overall setup. Some recent results will be discussed.

Abstract

The γ-coincidence studies of low-spin structures of 210Bi and 206Tl are presented. The 210Bi nucleus, populated in thermal neutron capture reaction, was investigated using EXILL HPGe array at Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The experimental results were compared to the shell-model calculations allowing to draw the conclusions on the nature of the low-spin excitations populated below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi (4.6 MeV). It has been found that some levels cannot be described by the valence proton and neutron couplings, but may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3- octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core. Moreover, preliminary results of a low-spin structure measurements of 206Tl by the γ-coincidence technique, making use of the 205Tl(n,γ)206Tl reaction at the FIPPS prompt γ-ray spectroscopy facility of ILL are shown. The population of a large number of excited states of 206Tl above the ground state up to the neutron binding energy (at 6.5 MeV), within a few units of spin is expected. The analysis involving double and triple γ-coincidences and γγ-angular correlations will allow to significantly extend the experimental information on the energy and spin-parity of the levels in 206Tl. This will help shedding light on the proton-hole and neutron-hole couplings near the doubly magic core 208Pb.

Abstract

The mixing ratio of the main 320-keV, M1 + E2 ground-state γ transition in 210Bi has been more precisely quantified, allowing a significant reduction in the uncertainty of measurements of the neutron-capture cross section to the ground state of 210Bi from 25% to 0.9%. Accurate values for neutron-capture cross sections to both the ground and long-lived 9− isomeric state at 271 keV in 210Bi are of particular importance as Pb-Bi finds increased usage in Accelerator Driven Systems.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first excited 2+, 4+, and 6+ states in Zr98 were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in Zr98 were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u U238 beam and a Be9 target. The γ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified by mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows a very small B(E2;21+→01+) value in Zr98, thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at N=60. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. The present results indicate the coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state. © 2018 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states in Tc-107, Rh-109, Rh-111, and Rh-113 were measured at GANIL using the Recoil-Distance Doppler Shift method. The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions in inverse kinematics with a U-238 beam impinging on a Be-9 target. Fission fragments were identified event-by-event in the ray-tracing spectrometer VAMOS++ and correlated with prompt gamma rays observed around the target position with the EXOGAM Ge detector array. Several lifetimes were obtained for states in the positiveparity yrast bands in the four nuclei and compared to triaxial particle-rotor calculations. The results clarify the configuration for the strongest positive-parity band in Tc-107 and suggest a gradual increase of triaxial deformation with atomic number Z, reaching almost maximum triaxiality for the neutron-rich Rh nuclei.

Abstract

The half-life of Ne-19 was measured using a real-time digital multiparametric acquisition system, providing an accurate time stamp and relevant information on the detector signals for each decay event. An exhaustive offline analysis of the data gave unique access to experimental effects potentially biasing the measurement. After establishing the influence factors impacting the measurement such as after-pulses, pile-up, gain, and baseline fluctuations, their effects were accurately estimated and the event selection optimized. The resulting half-life, 17.2569 +/- 0.0019((stat)) +/- 0.0009((syst)) s, is the most precise up to now for Ne-19. It is found to be in agreement with two recent precise measurements and not consistent with the most recent one [L.J. Broussard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 212301 (2014)] by 3.0 standard deviations. The full potential of the technique for nuclei with half-lives of a few seconds is discussed.

Lifetimes of excited states in Y-99, Y-101, Nb-101, Nb-103, and Nb-105 were measured in an experiment using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL (Grand Accelerateur National dIons Lourds). The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions between a U-238 beam and a Be-9 target. Prompt gamma rays were measured with the EXOGAM array and correlated with fission fragments that were identified in mass and atomic number with the VAMOS++ spectrometer. The measured lifetimes, together with branching ratios, provide B(M1) and B(E2) values for the strongly coupled rotational bands built on the [422] 5/2(+) ground state in the Y and Nb nuclei with neutron number N GT = 60. The comparison of the experimental results with triaxial particle-rotor calculations provides information about the evolution of the nuclear shape in this mass region.

Abstract

Half-lives and energies of gamma rays emitted in the decay of isomeric states of nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly magic Sn-100 weremeasured in a decay spectroscopy experiment at RikagakuKenkyusho (The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) of Japan Nishina Center. The measured half-lives, some with improved precision, are consistent with literature values. Three new results include a 55-keV E2 gamma ray from a new (4(+)) isomer with T-1/2 = 0.23(6) mu s in Rh-92, a 44-keV E2 gamma ray from the (15(+)) isomer in Ag-96, and T-1/2(6(+)) = 13(2) ns in Cd-98. Shell-model calculations of electromagnetic transition strengths in the (p(1/2), g(9/2)) model space agree with the experimental results. In addition, experimental isomeric ratios were compared to the theoretical predictions derived with an abrasion-ablation model and the sharp cutoff model. The results agreed within a factor of 2 for most isomers. From the nonobservation of time-delayed gamma rays in Sn-100, new constraints on the T-1/2, gamma-ray energy, and internal conversion coefficients are proposed for the hypothetical isomer in Sn-100.

Abstract

Several new isotopes, In-96, Cd-94, Ag-92, and Pd-90, have been identified at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The study of proton drip-line nuclei in the vicinity of Sn-100 led to the discovery of new proton emitters Ag-93 and Rh-89 with half-lives in the submicrosecond range. The systematics of the half-lives of odd-Z nuclei with T-z = -1/2 toward Sn-99 shows a stabilizing effect of the Z = 50 shell closure. Production cross sections for nuclei in the vicinity of Sn-100 measured at different energies and target thicknesses were compared to the cross sections calculated by EPAX taking into account contributions of secondary reactions in the primary target.

Abstract

The NEutron Detector Array (NEDA) project aims at the construction of a new high-efficiency compact neutron detector array to be coupled with large gamma-ray arrays such as AGATA. The application of NEDA ranges from its use as selective neutron multiplicity filter for fusion-evaporation reaction to a large solid angle neutron tagging device. In the present work, possible configurations for the NEDA coupled with the Neutron Wall for the early implementation with AGATA has been simulated, using Monte Carlo techniques, in order to evaluate their performance figures. The goal of this early NEDA implementation is to improve, with respect to previous instruments, efficiency and capability to select multiplicity for fusion-evaporation reaction channels in which 1, 2 or 3 neutrons are emitted. Each NEDA detector unit has the shape of a regular hexagonal prism with a volume of about 3.23 l and it is filled with the EJ301 liquid scintillator, that presents good neutron-gamma discrimination properties. The simulations have been performed using a fusion-evaporation event generator that has been validated with a set of experimental data obtained in the Ni-58 + Fe-56 reaction measured with the Neutron Wall detector array.

Abstract

The γ-coincidence studies of low-spin structures of 210Bi and 206Tl are presented. The 210Bi nucleus, populated in thermal neutron capture reaction, was investigated using EXILL HPGe array at Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The experimental results were compared to the shell-model calculations allowing to draw the conclusions on the nature of the low-spin excitations populated below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi (4.6 MeV). It has been found that some levels cannot be described by the valence proton and neutron couplings, but may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3- octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core. Moreover, preliminary results of a low-spin structure measurements of 206Tl by the γ-coincidence technique, making use of the 205Tl(n,γ)206Tl reaction at the FIPPS prompt γ-ray spectroscopy facility of ILL are shown. The population of a large number of excited states of 206Tl above the ground state up to the neutron binding energy (at 6.5 MeV), within a few units of spin is expected. The analysis involving double and triple γ-coincidences and γγ-angular correlations will allow to significantly extend the experimental information on the energy and spin-parity of the levels in 206Tl. This will help shedding light on the proton-hole and neutron-hole couplings near the doubly magic core 208Pb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

WOS: 000310091000001, The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. Abstract

Lifetimes of short-lived excited states in a wide range of neutron-rich fission fragments were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique, which was applied to fusion-fission reactions in inverse kinematics for the first time. The fission fragments were identified event-by-event in mass, charge, and atomic number using the VAMOS magnetic spectrometer at GANIL. Gamma rays originating from the fission fragments were measured with the EXOGAM array of Ge Clover detectors around the target position. Using a degrader, the change in the Doppler shift of the gamma ray allows the application of the RDDS method. Details of the experimental technique will be discussed and the status for the ongoing analysis for odd-mass yttrium isotopes will be presented.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of the odd-mass Zn-69 and Zn-71 isotopes, with one hole or one particle outside the N = 40 subshell closure, has been investigated by measuring the lifetime of excited states using the recoil distance Doppler-shift method. The nuclei of interest were produced in a deep-inelastic reaction in inverse kinematics with a U-238 beam impinging on a Zn-70 target. Single-particle and collective states were found to coexist at low energy in Zn-69 and Zn-71.

The mixing ratio of the main 320-keV, M1 + E2 ground-state γ transition in 210Bi has been more precisely quantified, allowing a significant reduction in the uncertainty of measurements of the neutroncapture cross section to the ground state of 210Bi from 25% to 0.9%. Accurate values for neutron-capture cross sections to both the ground and long-lived 9- isomeric state at 271 keV in 210Bi are of particular importance as Pb-Bi finds increased usage in Accelerator Driven Systems. Abstract

A large array of Ge detectors installed at ILL, around a 235U target irradiated with cold neutrons, (EXILL) allowed measurement of prompt gamma-ray cascades occurring in fission fragments with an unambiguous determination of fragments. Here we present preliminary results of a systematic comparison between experimental γ -ray intensities and those obtained from the Monte-Carlo simulation code FIFRELIN, which is dedicated to the de-excitation of fission fragments. Major γ -ray intensities in the 142Ba and 92Kr fission products, extracted from EXILL data, were compared to FIFRELIN, as well as to reported values (when available) obtained with EUROGAM2 in the spontaneous fission of 248Cm. The evolution of γ -ray intensities in 92Kr versus the complementary partner in fission (i.e. versus the total number of evaporated neutrons by the fission pair) was then extracted and compared to FIFRELIN. Lifetimes of the low-lying states in Zn isotopes around N = 40 have been measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method. The nuclei of interest were populated in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics. The ratios B(E2; 4(+) - GT 2(+))/B(E2; 2(+) - GT 0(+)) measured for the Zn isotopes follow a systematics consistent with a seniority classification. Abstract

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-72,Zn-74. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of Ge-76 at the Grand Accelerateur National dIons Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2(1)(+) state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method with the Koln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) states in Zn-72,Zn-74 were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2(1)(+)- GT 0(+)) = 385(39) and 370(33) e(2) fm(4), respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge, and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point toward a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete gamma-softness at N = 42.

U ovoj tezi smo ispitivali strukturu jezgara u okolini 68Ni kao i proizvodnju,razdvajanje i identifikaciju izotopa bogatih protonima koji se nalaze u okolini dvostrukomagičnog jezgra 100Sn.U prvom delu smo diskutovali evoluciju kolektivnosti i sadejstvo između kolektivnihi pojedinačno-čestičnih stepeni slobode u jezgrima oko 68Ni. U GANIL-u smo merilivremena života u izotopima Zn u okolini N = 40 proizvedenih u duboko neelastičnimsudarima 238U + 70Zn. Koristili smo uređaj "plunger" i metod " recoil-distance Dopplershift".Jezgra od interesa su identifikovana korišćenjem VAMOS spektrometra, a gamazraci su identifikovani EXOGAM detektorom. Iz merenog vremena života je izvedenaredukovana verovatnoća elektromagnetskih prelaza. Nekoliko tranzicija i vremenaživota su merene i objavljene po prvi put. Proračuni modela ljuske su korišćeni zaanalizu i diskusiju eksperimentalnih rezultata.U drugom delu, analizirano je i diskutovano delimično održanje "seniority" kvantnogbroja u g9/2 ljusci i njegov uticaj na transfer jedne čestice u istoj ljusci.Treći deo obuhvata analizu test experimenta sprovedenog u institutu RIKEN (Japan).Cilj je bio da se ispitaju i procene dve konfiguracije BigRIPS separatora kako bi seoptimizovala proizvodnja i selekcija 100Sn. Ova studija je potom korišćena da se podeseparametri našeg narednog eksperimenta, koji je bio posvećen merenju intenzitetaGamow-Teller prelaza u raspadu 100Sn. Jezgra u okolini 100Sn su proizvedenafragmentacijom snopa 124Xe energije 345 MeV/u na berilijumskoj meti. Efikasni preseciproizvodnje jezgara u okolini 100Sn su mereni. Takođe, potraga za novim izotopima iizomerima u svim identifikovanim jezgrima je prikazana., In this thesis we investigated the structure of nuclei around 68Ni as well as theproduction, separation and identification of proton-rich isotopes lying in the vicinity ofthe doubly-magic 100Sn nucleus.In the first part, we discuss the evolution of collectivity and the interplay betweencollective and single-particle degrees of freedom in nuclei around 68Ni. We measuredlifetimes in Zn isotopes around N = 40 produced in 238U + 70Zn deep-inelastic collisionsat GANIL. We used a plunger device and the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. Thenuclei of interest were identified by the VAMOS spectrometer and the -rays with theEXOGAM array. The reduced electromagnetic transitions probabilities were extractedfrom the lifetimes. Several transitions and lifetimes are reported for the first time. Theexperimental results are discussed in the framework of shell model calculations.In the second part, the partial conservation of seniority in the g9/2 shell and itsinfluence on one-particle transfer is discussed.The third part presents the analysis of a test performed at RIKEN (Japan) to evaluatetwo settings of the BigRIPS separator for optimizing the production and selection of100Sn. This study has been used to setup our subsequent experiment, dedicated to themeasurement of the Gamow-Teller strength in the decay of 100Sn. Nuclei around 100Snwere produced by fragmentation of a 345 MeV/u 124Xe beam on a Be target. Theproduction cross-sections of nuclei around 100Sn were measured. The search for newisotopes and new isomers in all identified nuclei is presented.

Abstract

This work describes new electronics for the EX-OGAM2 (HP-Ge detector array) and NEDA (BC501A-based neutron detector array). A new digitizing card with high resolution has been designed for gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy experiments. The higher bandwidth requirement of the NEDA signals, together with the necessity for accuracy, require a high sampling rate in order to preserve the shape for real-time Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). The PSA is of paramount importance for the NEDA to discriminate between neutrons and gamma-ray signals. Both high resolution and high speed parameters are often difficult to achieve in a single electronic unit. These constraints, together with the need to build new digitizing electronics to improve performance and flexibility of signal analysis in nuclear physics experiments, led to the development a new FADC mezzanine card. In this work, the design and development are described, including the characterization procedure and the preliminary measurement results.

Abstract

Lifetimes of first 4(+) and 6(+) states have been measured in neutron-rich isotopes of Zr, Mo, Ru and Pd using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL. The nuclei were produced through a fusion-fission reaction in inverse kinematics. The fission fragments were fully identified in the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer and gamma -rays were detected in coincidence with the EXOGAM germanium array. Lifetimes of excited states in the range of 1-100 ps were measured with the Cologne plunger. Preliminary lifetime results are presented as well as a discussion on the evolution of the collectivity in this region.

Abstract

The decay of O-19(beta(-)) and Ne-19(beta(+)) implanted in niobium in its superconducting and metallic phases was measured using purified radioactive beams produced by the SPIRAL GANIL facility. Half-lives and branching ratios measured in the two phases are consistent within a 1 sigma error bar. This measurement casts strong doubts on the predicted strong electron screening in a superconductor, the so-called superscreening. The measured difference in screening potential energy is 110(90) eV for Ne-19 and 400(320) eV for O-19. Precise determinations of the half-lives were obtained for O-19, 26.476(9) s, and for Ne-19, 17.254(5) s.

Abstract

We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in 68Ni. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2 + state is a π(2p-2h) 0 + state across the major Z=28 shell gap. Abstract

The shell structure of atomic nuclei is associated with magic numbers and originates in the nearly independent motion of neutrons and protons in a mean potential generated by all nucleons. During beta(+)-decay, a proton transforms into a neutron in a previously not fully occupied orbital, emitting a positron-neutrino pair with either parallel or antiparallel spins, in a Gamow-Teller or Fermi transition, respectively. The transition probability, or strength, of a Gamow-Teller transition depends sensitively on the underlying shell structure and is usually distributed among many states in the neighbouring nucleus. Here we report measurements of the half-life and decay energy for the decay of Sn-100, the heaviest doubly magic nucleus with equal numbers of protons and neutrons. In the beta-decay of Sn-100, a large fraction of the strength is observable because of the large decay energy. We determine the largest Gamow-Teller strength so far measured in allowed nuclear beta-decay, establishing the superallowed nature of this Gamow-Teller transition. The large strength and the low-energy states in the daughter nucleus, In-100, are well reproduced by modern, large-scale shell model calculations.

Abstract

A new gas-filled operation mode of the large-acceptance spectrometer VAMOS at GANIL is reported. A beam rejection factor greater than 10(10) is obtained for the Ca-40+Sm-150 system at 196 MeV. The unprecedented transmission efficiency for the evaporation residues produced in this reaction is estimated to be around 80% for alpha x n channels and above 95% for x ny p channels. A detailed study of the performance of the gas-filled VAMOS and future developments are discussed. This new operation mode opens avenues to explore the potential of fusion reactions in various kinematics. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The odd-Z isotope 255Lr, its daughter 251Md and grand-daughter 247Es were studied in two experiments performed at GANIL and the University of Jyväskylä. The 255Lr nuclei were produced using the cold fusion-evaporation reaction 209Bi( 48Ca, 2n)255Lr at a bombarding energy of 217MeV. The single-particle structure and decay properties were investigated using α, γ and electron spectroscopy. The ground-state spin and parity could be assigned for 255Lr (1/2-) and 251Md (7/2 -). States corresponding to the 7/2+[633], 7/2 -[514] and 1/2-[521] Nilsson orbitals were observed. Results are compared to experimental data obtained in neighbouring isotopes and to Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the Skyrme interaction SLy4 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. 48. Fusion Reactions Involving Radioactive Beams at GANIL

Abstract

The ISOL type SPIRAL facility at GANIL has been commissioned recently and delivers radioactive beams (RIBs) for physics since a couple of years. Despite many difficulties arising from both the complexity to produce good beam quality and intensity as well as to setup the appropriate detection system, the first experiments with SPIRAL have demonstrated that nuclear dynamics studies (nuclear structure and low energy reaction mechanism) at the Coulomb barrier are possible with that kind of beams. RIBs like 76Kr and 6,8He have been used to produce exotic nuclei via fusion evaporation or to study reaction mechanisms at low energy. These two examples will be detailed in this talk.

WOS: 000372866900001, The NEutron Detector Array (NEDA) project aims at the construction of a new high-efficiency compact neutron detector array to be coupled with large gamma-ray arrays such as AGATA. The application of NEDA ranges from its use as selective neutron multiplicity filter for fusion-evaporation reaction to a large solid angle neutron tagging device. In the present work, possible configurations for the NEDA coupled with the Neutron Wall for the early implementation with AGATA has been simulated, using Monte Carlo techniques, in order to evaluate their performance figures. The goal of this early NEDA implementation is to improve, with respect to previous instruments, efficiency and capability to select multiplicity for fusion-evaporation reaction channels in which 1, 2 or 3 neutrons are emitted. Each NEDA detector unit has the shape of a regular hexagonal prism with a volume of about 3.23 l and it is filled with the EJ301 liquid scintillator, that presents good neutron-gamma discrimination properties. Abstract

WOS: 000439286800004, PubMed: 30085775, Energy differences between analogue states in the T = 1/2 Mg-23-Na-23 mirror nuclei have been measured along the rotational yrast bands. This allows us to search for effects arising from isospin-symmetrybreaking interactions (ISB) and/or shape changes. Data are interpreted in the shell model framework following the method successfully applied to nuclei in the f(7/2) shell. It is shown that the introduction of a schematic ISB interaction of the same type of that used in the f(7/2) shell is needed to reproduce the data. An alternative novel description, applied here for the first time, relies on the use of an effective interaction deduced from a realistic charge-dependent chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This analysis provides two important results: (i) The mirror energy differences give direct insight into the nuclear skin; (ii) the skin changes along the rotational bands are strongly correlated with the difference between the neutron and proton occupations of the s(1/2) "halo" orbit., European Union [262010 ENSAR, FP7/2007-2013], The authors are grateful to the GANIL accelerator team.
