Wing length, 7.88.3 mm. Lectotype: body 10 mm, wing 9 mm. Type material examined Lectotype, female (see notes on type locality below), in MLUH, by present designation and labelled accordingly; it is the only surviving syntype. Old white handwritten label: Paramo / 3600 Met. / Columbia [the Columbia in a different hand from the rest, and neither in Von Rders handwriting]; Von Rders handwritten white label: Hydrotae / a / Stbeli / n. sp.. Labelled (printed) by ACP: LECTOTYPE female / Hydrotaea / stuebeli / Von Rder, 1886 / des. A. C. Pont 2004 (see also Pont 2004). Other material examined. ECUADOR. Pichincha, 35 km Tandopi, 2429.vi. 1975 (S. Peck), 1 female (FMNH); Napo, 42 km NW Baeza, 3300 [feet], 26.iii. 1976 (S. Peck), 1 female (DZUP). Remarks The body of the lectotype is rather dirty and right fore leg is missing, otherwise it is well preserved. According to the labels, the other specimens were collected in carrion traps and on bamboo shrubs between 1100 and 3600 metres, the latter on pramo. Notes on the typelocality: The Diptera collected by Alphons Stbel, one of greatest of the early collectors in South America, were identified and published by Rder (1886). Stbel spent nine years in this region after arriving in Santa Marta, Colombia, in 1868. He subsequently visited several other countries, mainly studying geology and especially vulcanology but also collecting flies (see Papavero 1973). Compared with the present time, Colombia was a very different country when Stbel collected the female of B. stuebeli at an altitude of 3600 metres, embracing the whole northwest part of the South American continent. The lectotype label mentions Pramo in Colombia as the typelocality. However, Pramo is a type of vegetation, subdivided into subpramo, pramo and super pramo (Hammer 1974), and is characteristic of the South American tropical highlands, being found above 3000 metres in northern Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. It seems probable that the Pramo of the lectotype label refers to the vegetation type and is not the name of town or city in Colombia. According to Papavero (1973: 310), Stbel made an excursion to Quito (Ecuador) and its neighbourhood from April to June 1871, and in May, June, October to December 1873 to several localities in Ecuador, including Pramo de Calacali at 3600 metres. This is the only locality where Pramo at 3600 metres is clearly stated (see Papavero 1973), although there were other localities at or above 3600 metres during this entire journey. It is difficult, if not impossible, to establish the typelocality of B. stuebeli with certainty, but on the basis of Stbels 1873 itinerary we propose to fix Pramo de Calacali in Ecuador as the typelocality of B. stuebeli (map, Fig. 19). Other localities in Ecuador for B. stuebeli are known to us (see the material listed above). Geographic distribution Ecuador., Published as part of De Carvalho, C. J. B. & Pont, A. Brachygasterina valdiviensis (Pamplona & Couri, 2000) (Figs 4, 9) Palpibracus valdiviensis Pamplona & Couri, 2000: 1. Diagnosis This species is similar in its generally dark metallic violetblue body colour to most species of Brachygasterina but the parafacial in the female at its narrowest point is less than 0.2 of width of first flagellomere, which is the narrowest among the species of the genus (Fig. 9). It is closely related to B. violaceiventris but can be distinguished by the presence of a dorsal preapical seta on fore tibia and by the number of spermathecae: two in B. valdiviensis and three in B. violaceiventris (Soares & Carvalho 2004). Redescription Female. Head: frons broad, at narrowest point 0.36 of head width (Fig. 4). Eye with short and sparse hairs; when the head is viewed from the front, the hairs are about as long as width of arista at base. Frontoorbital plate matt, blackish; parafacial, face and gena brownishgrey pruinose; occiput metallic blue to violet. Seven pairs of frontal setae; 2 reclinate orbital setae. Facial ridge with setulae reaching almost to level of tip of first flagellomere. Parafacial at narrowest point less than 0.2 of width of first flagellomere. Gena broad, in lateral view at least 0.9 of first flagellomere width. Proboscis mainly shining, dusted behind. Palpus black. Thorax. Groundcolour subshining dark metallic violetblue, dulled by pruinescence in posterior view. Mesonotum with 4 stripes. 2 + 34 welldeveloped acrostichals; 2 strong posterior intraalars, 1 weaker; prealar strong, subequal to anterior notopleural seta; notopleuron with sparse setulae. Scutellum laterally setulose; with strong apical, basal and lateral setae, and corresponding weak setae on disc. One strong proepisternal seta and 3 setulae; 3 strong proepimeral setae and many long setulae. Katepisternals 2 + 3. Katatergite distinctly setulose. Legs. Dark brown. Fore tibia without posterior seta. Mid femur with 1 short anterior and 3 posterior preapical setae. Mid tibia with 3 posterior setae, without anterodorsal or ventrals. Hind femur with a row of strong anteroventral setae, the last 4 stronger; a row of strong posteroventral setae in basal half; 2 anterodorsal and 3 anteroventral setae; dorsal preapical strong, anterodorsal preapical weak, without posteroventral apical. Wing. Smoky, veins dark brown. Veins bare, except costa. Crossvein dmcu very sinuous. Vein M running straight to wing margin. Calypters dark brown, lower one slightly longer than upper one. Brachygasterina fulvohumeralis (Malloch, 1922) Euphaonia fulvohumeralis Malloch, 1922: 271. Diagnosis This species is very characteristic among the species of Brachygasterina because of the striking orangeyellow colour of humeral callus and prothoracic spiracle, and notopleuron dull orange. No obvious dusting on thorax or abdomen. Fore tibia with a strong posterior median seta. Redescription Female. Head missing in the holotype, which is still the only known specimen. The following characters are taken from Mallochs (1922) original description of his Euphaonia fulvohumeralis n.gen., n.sp.: head black, opaque, frontoorbital plates and face with whitish pruinosity; eyes shorthaired; frons onethird of headwidth; two orbital setae, one directed backwards and outwards, one directed inwards, without proclinate orbitals; interfrontal setae present, crossed; arista short pubescent, the hairs not longer than its basal diameter; parafacial linear; gena as high as half width of first flagellomere, the latter 1.5 times as long as pedicel. Thorax. Groundcolour subshining dark metallic blue, hardly dulled by pruinescence in posterior view; humeral callus and prothoracic spiracle orangeyellow, notopleuron dull orange. Mesonotum with a single median white presutural vitta running over the acrostichal rows as far as suture, otherwise undusted. 2 + 3 developed acrostichals; 2 strong posterior intraalars; prealar very strong, longer than anterior notopleural seta; notopleuron bare apart from the setae. Scutellum laterally setulose; with strong apical and basal setae, two weaker laterals placed more on disc, and a weaker basal. One strong proepisternal seta and 34 setulae; 2 strong proepimeral setae and many long setulae. Katepisternals 1 + 2. Katatergite pilose. Legs. Only three legs remaining on holotype, all three detached and gummed to mount (left fore leg, right mid leg, right hind leg). Black. Fore tibia with a posterior seta. Mid femur with 1 short anterior and 2 posterior preapical setae. Mid tibia with 4 posterior setae, without anterodorsal or ventrals. Hind femur with 3 strong anteroventral setae in apical third, bare on posteroventral surface; 3 well spaced anterodorsal and 4 short anteroventral setae; dorsal and anterodorsal preapicals strong, without posteroventral apicals. Wing. Clear, somewhat smoky towards base, veins brown. Veins bare, except costa. Crossvein dmcu straight. Vein M running straight to wingmargin. Calypters brown, lower one slightly longer than upper one. Knob of haltere dark brown. Abdomen. Subshining metallic blue, without dust. Sternite 1 bare. Measurements (n= 1): Wing length, 7.0 mm. Remarks The holotype is in poor condition (see also Malloch, 1934): head, right fore leg, left mid leg and left hind leg missing; the other legs glued to the staging mount; abdomen loosely attached to thorax. The holotype is labelled with an old handwritten label Pt. Fam.; a printed label Port Famine, / T. del Fuego. / C. Darwin.; a further label 1863 44. [handwritten] / Darwin Coll. [printed]; it is also labelled as Type by Malloch, and with the combination in Brachygasterina by Carvalho. Geographic distribution Chile., Published as part of De Carvalho, C. J. B. & Pont, A. Antenna placed at middle or slightly below head's middle; flagellum small, oval; arista bare, apical. Proboscis short; labellum membranous with pseudotracheae and short sensorial bristles. Ocellar triangle not protuberant with 1 ocellar pair of bristles. Postcranium pruinose, convex; postocular series discontinuous, upper bristles bent forwards; occipital setae variable, frequently numerous. Thorax. Scutum usually pruinose, rarely shiny, with scattered bristles, anterior ones reclinate and posterior ones, on prescutellar disc, proclinate; dc row uniserial and acr row uniserial to biserial, arranged in discrete rows on the prescutellar disc; ial numerous. Outstanding setae: 2 npl; 1 pal; 1 or more sctl. Propleural bristle present. Wing narrow, elongate, hyaline or slightly brown tinged. Rs short. R 4 + 5 and M 1 parallel or convergent. Male terminalia pruinose, asymmetrical. Epandrium divided dorsally, surstyli not articulated. Bacilliform sclerite strongly sclerotized, connected with hypandrial bridge dorsally. Subepandrial sclerite usually projected beyond posterodorsal margin of left epandrial lamella. Hypandrium prolonged distally with apically developed hypandrial lobe; hypandrial arms narrowed and sclerotized forming ring (dorsal bridge) around phallus. Postgonites united ventrally forming continuous structure, beltlike, around base of phallus ventrolaterally. Phallus robust. Dorsal and ventral ejaculatory apodemes developed and sclerotized. Female terminalia with sclerites modified starting from segment 7, with protuberances, reentrances, thorns or elongate spinelike setae; Tg 8 with single sclerotized plate; St 8 usually divided basally. Distribution. Neotropical with records from the Antilles, Central America and northern South America. Included species. The genus currently includes: Neohybos hallexus (Smith), comb. nov.; Neohybos halteralis (Bezzi), comb. nov.; Neohybos luridus (Bezzi), comb. nov.; Neohybos leptogaster (Melander), comb. nov.; Neohybos derodactylus (Melander), comb. nov. and several undescribed species. Remarks. Adults of Neohybos are distinguished from Euhybus Coquillett and Cerathybos Bezzi by the combination of following characters: face dichoptic and usually short; anal lobe narrowed; alular incision obtuse; scutum with reduced number of bristles, dc and acr arranged in discrete series on prescutellar disc; narrow hypandrial arms forming a sclerotized ring around the phallus and the hypandrium with the medium portion wider than or at least as wide as the base; male eighth abdominal segment not rotated; Tg 8 of female with single sclerotized plate. Neohybos stands out from other genera of Hybotinae by the characters above, plus the apical and bare arista, proboscis short with a membra nous labellum bearing pseudotracheae, vein Rs short, veins R 4 + 5 and M 1 parallel or slightly convergent, cell cup longer than cell bm and male terminalia asymmetrical. The male terminalia of Neohybos are derived in several aspects in relation to the ground plan of the subfamily and provide its main diagnostic characters, of great taxonomic and phylogenetic importance. In the groundplan of Hybotinae, the epandrium is deeply emarginate, with the epandrial lamellae united dorsally by a narrow bridge; distal margin of hypandrium with a pair of posterior lobes; surstyli not articulated; postgonites long, articulated with the hypandrial arms; ventral apodeme long, uniting the postgonites ventrally. These characters are distributed throughout related subfamilies; e.g. Bicellaria Macquart (Sinclair 1996, Figs. 2629) and Oedalea (Chvla 1983, Figs. 318320, 341 347). In Neohybos, the epandrial lamellae are separated dorsally; hypandrium is prolonged distally with a developed apical hypandrial lobe usually on the right side, the left hypandrial lobe reduced or lacking; the phallus is robust, tubular, with two ejaculatory apodemes dilated apically, articulated at the base of the phallus, the right apodeme sloping, almost horizontal and the left one vertically positioned; the postgonites, positioned at the base of the phallus, are short and united ventrally forming a single ventrolateral structure, beltlike around the base of the phallus. However, the surstyli are not articulate, the bacilliform sclerite is still strongly sclerotized and articulated with the hypandrial bridge dorsally as in the Atelestinae and in the most basal genera of the Hybotinae and in the primitive genera of the Ocydromiinae (Chvla 1983, Figs. 311, 312; Cumming et al. 1995, Figs. 10 a, b, c; 12 a, b). Phylogenetic relationships. The genus belongs to the Neotropical group of hybotine genera with a short membranous proboscis bearing pseudotracheae. Neohybos is the sistergroup of the lineage formed by Euhybus Coquillett and Cerathybos Bezzi, the most derived monophyletic group within the subfamily Hybotinae. These three genera share the reduced or absent ventral apodeme of the postgonites; furca and epifurca (Kristoph 1961) thin and longitudinal, and pseudotracheae present. The pseudotracheae are present in the most basal genera of Hybotinae (Chillcottomyia, Lamachella, Stenoproctus, Acarterus and Afrohybos) and they were lost in the group with proboscis strongly sclerotized (Syneches, Hybos, Syndyas, Lactistomyia and Smithybos). The presence of pseudotracheae in the group formed by Euhybus, Cerathybos and Neohybos is considered a reversal. The furcal plates are plesiomorphycally wide in the most genera of the Hybotinae. Euhybus and Cerathybos share holoptic eyes in the face, separate postgonites, membranous hypandrial arms, male eighth abdominal segment rotated, bacilliform sclerite parcially incomplete, and tergite 8 of female with three plates. However, in Neohybos those structures still keep the primitive state found in basal genera of Hybotinae: face dichoptic and usually short; postgonites united ventrally; hypandrial arms narrow; male eighth abdominal segment not rotated, bacilliform sclerite directly articulated with the hypandrium (just the right in Neohybos) and tergite 8 of the female formed by a single plate., Published as part of Ale-Rocha, R. & De Carvalho, C. Neohybos luridus (Bezzi) comb. nov. (Figs. 1925, 30) Hybos luridus Bezzi, 1909: 310; Collin, 1933: 28 (citation); Smith, 1967: 11 (catalogue), Rafael & AleRocha, 1995: 530 (revision). Diagnosis. Flagellum with one dorsal short bristle; body black with pruinose thorax and shiny abdomen; scutum with gray pruinescence inserted with dorsocentral strip of brown pruinescence, posterior half of scutum and inferior half of mesopleuron with whitish tomentum; scutellum with gray pruinescence; acr and dc short, scattered, acr uniserial; wing smoothly brownish to hyaline with brown stigma; legs black except base of tibiae, tarsomeres 12 yellow, tarsomeres 34 brown. Species reviewed by Rafael & AleRocha (1995) with designation of the female lectotype and figures of female terminalia and wing. In the mentioned work, the male specimen used by Bezzi (1909) in the original description was not studied and it is probably lost. A series of female specimens from Ecuador were examined in this work. Two male specimens were associated with the females by general characters. The male terminalia was studied and the illustrations presented for the first time. Male terminalia (Figs. 1925): bristles sparse and slender; right hypandrial lobe as long as half of length of hypandrium; dorsal bridge incomplete, right hypandrial arm short; left postgonite almost triangular; right epandrial lamella tapered distally in lateral view; left epandrial lamella with bilobed apex; right bacilliform sclerite with large process with truncate apex bearing black robust short bristles; phallus with large and robust spinelike process distally. Distribution. Bolivia, Ecuador (new record). Additional material. ECUADOR, Tungurahua, above Banos, 20002500m, 5.x. 1978, M. Cooper, BM 1999, 1 ♂ (INPA); 19.xi. 1978, 2 (BMNH, INPA); 31.xiii. 1978, 2 (BMNH); 22.xi. 1978, 1♂, 1 (BMNH)., Published as part of Ale-Rocha, R. & De Carvalho, C. J.
