Abstract

We study the scale dependence of the saturated hydraulic conductivity Ks through the effective porosity ne by means of a newly developed power-law model (PLM) which allows to use simultaneously measurements at different scales. The model is expressed as product between a single PLM (capturing the impact of the dominating scale) and a characteristic function κ⋆ accounting for the correction because of the other scale(s). The simple (closed form) expression of the κ⋆-function enables one to easily identify the scales which are relevant for Ks. The proposed model is then applied to a set of real data taken at the experimental site of Montalto Uffugo (Italy), and we show that in this case two (i.e. laboratory and field) scales appear to be the main ones. The implications toward an important application (solute transport) in Hydrology are finally discussed.

Abstract

Between the evening of October 23rd and the evening of October 24th 2017, a sea storm hit the city of Bari, along the Adriatic coast, in the south of Italy, causing widespread damages. Due to the absence of direct observations of wave characteristics, the present paper is aimed to (i) compare the development of the occurred sea storm as hindcasted by '84 method with the predictions by atmosphere-ocean numerical models and satellite observations and (ii) estimate the most reliable value of the significant wave height, Hs, at the peak of the sea storm, with its associated return period. As a result, the '84 showed the better agreement with the satellite observations in determining the value of Hs at the peak of the sea storm, compared with the predictions by more sophisticated atmosphere-ocean numerical models. In particular, the obtained value of Hs, equal to 6.58 m, makes the investigated sea storm an exceptional event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

L’analisi delle curve di ritenzione idrica tramite la geometria frattale si basa sulla definizione di modelli teorici che hanno come supporto fenomenologico lo schema geometrico noto come spugna di Menger. Tali modelli permettono di valutare in termini parametrici il processo di scala della ritenzione idrica, il quale può essere descritto attraverso lo scaling relativo sia alla componente prossima alla saturazione e sia alla parte prossima al drenaggio completo. L’ambito di variabilità di detti intervalli di scala è tuttora oggetto di studio e di interpretazione fisica, vista la complessità del fenomeno idraulico connesso. Gli approcci seguiti negli ultimi anni analizzano la variabilità di diversi parametri legati alla stima diretta e/o indiretta degli scaling, ossia correlati alla definizione della dimensione frattale. Tuttavia, i riscontri sperimentali hanno indicato che la natura della ritenzione idrica può essere descritta mediante un processo additivo che tiene conto delle singole componenti che intervengono nel fenomeno dello scaling di ritenzione stesso, sia per alti che per bassi contenuti idrici. Tale aspetto risulta particolarmente evidente nelle applicazioni dirette dei modelli cosiddetti bi-frattali, già estensione di quelli a scala unica (simple-scaling) i quali manifestano una complessa variabilità delle dimensioni frattali stimate con caratteristiche ben diverse da quelle limite del supporto euclideo. Ciò induce a ritenere che il fenomeno della ritenzione idrica sia supportato geometricamente da un insieme di misure in intervalli di scaling diversi (multi-scaling) limite e/o intermedi. Quanto sopra esposto è stato verificato tramite una campagna sperimentale che ha utilizzato i dati ricavati su un’area ubicata in località Ponticelli (Napoli).

Abstract

Water retention curve (WRC) is analyzed by means of the fractal geometry approach. Three models accounting for the fractal distribution of either the pore and solid phase of unsaturated porous media have been considered. By using data collected during a field scale internal drainage, we determine the functional relationship between the WRC, and the fractal dimension(s). In particular, it is shown that the fractal scaling of the WRC is feasible provided that a large enough set of measurements at the lowest water contents is available.
