The Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway (LOP-Gateway, or simply Gateway) is a crewed platform that will be assembled and operated in the vicinity of the Moon by NASA and international partner organizations, including ESA, starting from the mid-2020s. It will offer new opportunities for fundamental and applied scientific research. The Moon is a unique location to study the deep space plasma environment. Moreover, the lunar surface and the surface-bounded exosphere are interacting with this environment, constituting a complex multi-scale interacting system. This paper examines the opportunities provided by externally mounted payloads on the Gateway in the field of space plasma physics, heliophysics and space weather, but also examines the impact of the space environment on an inhabited platform in the vicinity of the Moon. It then presents the conceptual design of a model payload, required to perform these space plasma measurements and observations. It results that the Gateway is very well-suited for space plasma physics research. It allows a series of scientific objectives with a multidisciplinary dimension to be addressed.

The neutral particles sensor ELENA (Emitted Low Energy Neutral Atoms) for the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury (in the SERENA instrument suite) is devoted to measure low energetic neutral atoms. The main goal of the experiment is measuring the sputtering emission from planetary surfaces, from E=20eV up to E=5keV, within 1D (2 deg. x 76 deg. ). ELENA original project had also a particle discrimination system based on Time-of-Flight (TOF) of particles through the shutter on the Micro Channel Plates detector (MCP), it has been withdrawn from the flight model due to design and development problems. The ELENA SCOE is the configuration/testing system of ELENA, it allows to command operations and to set up configuration parameters on the instrument and to monitor the incoming data. The TC/TM simulation/encoding/decoding software is developed respecting the CCSDS/ECSS standards implemented by ESA, and it's SCOS2000 compatible. TC generation, HK data monitoring and basic science data analysis are operated by the SERENA EGSE, developed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Helsinki, Finland. The data stream outcoming from the EGSE is then preprocessed from TM to user readable formats: FITS and then ASCII csv tables with metadata collected in a detached XML file, called label. This task is performed using the PacketLib, ProcessorLib, and DISCoS (PPD) framework and is going to be used as the first level prototype of the BepiColombo Science Ground Segment processing pipeline, based in ESAC, Madrid, Spain and implemented using the PDS4 data format., Comment: Proceedings of the European Ground System Architecture Workshop (ESAW) 18-19 June 2013 ESA/ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany

We study the physics of turbulent/non-turbulent interface of an isolated turbulent region in dilute polymer solutions and Newtonian fluid. The performance of a FENE-P model with a localized homogeneous forcing is verified using the specially designed experimental setup of a turbulent patch growing in water/dilute polymer solution, without mean shear and far from the walls. The results of the small scale dynamics of vorticity and strain help to reveal the key mechanism of polymer action in turbulent flows without mean shear. Modified degrees of alignment between vorticity, the polymer conformation and the rate-of-strain tensors found especially near the interface explain the reduced vorticity stretching and increased vorticity compression terms. These small scale alignments in the non-Newtonian turbulent flow thus lead to a reduced production of enstrophy and consequently to a reduced entrainment (seen as propagation or dispersion).

In order to generalize the well-known spanwise-oscillating-wall technique for drag reduction, non-sinusoidal oscillations of a solid wall are considered as a means to alter the skin-friction drag in a turbulent channel flow. A series of Direct Numerical Simulations is conducted to evaluate the control performance of nine different temporal waveforms, in addition to the usual sinusoid, systematically changing the wave amplitude and the period for each waveform. The turbulent average spanwise motion is found to coincide with the laminar Stokes solution that is constructed, for the generic waveform, through harmonic superposition. This allows us to define and compute, for each waveform, a new penetration depth of the Stokes layer which correlates with the amount of turbulent drag reduction, and eventually to predict both turbulent drag reduction and net energy saving rate for arbitrary waveforms. Among the waveforms considered, the maximum net energy saving rate is obtained by the sinusoidal wave at its optimal amplitude and period. However, the sinusoid is not the best waveform at every point in the parameter space. Our predictive tool offers simple guidelines to design waveforms that outperform the sinusoid for given (suboptimal) amplitude and period of oscillation. This is potentially interesting in view of applications, where physical limitations often preclude the actuator to reach its optimal operating conditions.

Numerical simulations of turbulent channel flows, with or without additives, are limited in the extent of the Reynolds number \Re and Deborah number \De. The comparison of such simulations to theories of drag reduction, which are usually derived for asymptotically high \Re and \De, calls for some care. In this paper we present a study of drag reduction by rodlike polymers in a turbulent channel flow using direct numerical simulation and illustrate how these numerical results should be related to the recently developed theory.

Drag reduction by polymers in turbulent flows raises an apparent contradiction: the stretching of the polymers must increase the viscosity, so why is the drag reduced? A recent theory proposed that drag reduction in agreement with experiments is consistent with the effective viscosity growing linearly with the distance from the wall. With this self consistent solution the reduction in the Reynolds stress overwhelms the increase in viscous drag. In this Letter we show, using Direct Numerical Simulations, that a linear viscosity profile indeed reduces the drag in agreement with the theory and in close correspondence with direct simulations of the FENE-P model at the same flow conditions., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, JFM, submitted

Recent direct numerical simulations of the FENE-P model of non-Newtonian hydrodynamics revealed that the phenomenon of drag reduction by polymer additives exists (albeit in reduced form) also in homogeneous turbulence. We introduce here a simple shell model for homogeneous viscoelastic flows that recaptures the essential observations of the full simulations. The simplicity of the shell model allows us to offer a transparent explanation of the main observations. It is shown that the mechanism for drag reduction operates mainly on the large scales. Understanding the mechanism allows us to predict how the amount of drag reduction depends of the various parameters in the model. The main conclusion is that drag reduction is not a universal phenomenon, it peaks in a window of parameters like Reynolds number and the relaxation rate of the polymer.

We address the phenomenon of drag reduction by dilute polymeric additive to turbulent flows, using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of the FENE-P model of viscoelastic flows. It had been amply demonstrated that these model equations reproduce the phenomenon, but the results of DNS were not analyzed so far with the goal of interpreting the phenomenon. In order to construct a useful framework for the understanding of drag reduction we initiate in this paper an investigation of the most important modes that are sustained in the viscoelastic and Newtonian turbulent flows respectively. The modes are obtained empirically using the Karhunen-Loeve decomposition, allowing us to compare the most energetic modes in the viscoelastic and Newtonian flows. The main finding of the present study is that the spatial profile of the most energetic modes is hardly changed between the two flows. What changes is the energy associated with these modes, and their relative ordering in the decreasing order from the most energetic to the least. Modes that are highly excited in one flow can be strongly suppressed in the other, and vice versa. This dramatic energy redistribution is an important clue to the mechanism of drag reduction as is proposed in this paper.
