VetMéx. 1970;1(4):7–12.- - - - - Se hace un estudio clínico y de laboratorio de los animales afectados por una entidad patológica conocida desde hace muchos años con el nombre de Mal de Playa, en una zona limitada de la costa del estado de Veracruz. Se establece que en los potreros donde ocurre la enfermedad prevalece la planta Lantana camara, conocida como hepatotóxica. Por medio de la administración experimental de la planta a dos becerros, se produce la enfermedad con manifestaciones idénticas a las observadas en los casos de campo. Se revisa la bibliografía al respecto y se discuten algunos puntos especiales referentes a la presentación de la enfermedad en la zona afectada. Se concluye que el Mal de Playa es causado por la ingestión de la planta Lantana camara.

Equids are still used for diverse chores in Mexico and are essential for the livelihoods of numerous families. Appropriate health and behavior are prerequisites for performing work without affecting welfare. This study aimed to assess the welfare of working equids in Tuliman, applying the hands-on donkey tool. This tool evaluates five dimensions (behavior, body condition score [BCS], wounds, lameness, and other health issues) and was applied to 438 working equids (horses, mules, and donkeys). The Kruskall-Wallis test was applied to investigate differences between species and sex. Donkeys were more common; they also presented more positive behaviors and less lameness (p 0.05). No differences were found for BCS among species on a scale ranging from 1 to 5 (mean BCS for donkeys = 1.9; mules = 2; and horses = 1.8). Mares had significantly lower BCS (mean = 1.5) than stallions (p 0.05) and geldings (mean = 1.9). Overall mules had better welfare evaluations. The tool allowed detection of welfare issues in working equids; a practical outcome would be implementing local welfare strategies according to its results.

This study assessed the effects of five different transport periods on physiometabolic responses and gas exchange in ostriches. It included 138 ostriches that were assigned to five experimental groups. G1 included 78 birds that were set aside as a reference group (RG). Each one of the four remaining experimental groups included 20 ostriches, which were transported in the following manner: G1 on one occasion for a period of 1 h; G2 on one occasion for 2 h; and G3 on one occasion for 3 h; G4a was made up of the ostriches from G1 but they were shipped on a second occasion, for 2 h (making a total of 3 h); finally, G4b was that same group, but after a third transport period, on this occasion during 3 h (for a total of 6 h). "Working equids remain an important source of income for thousands of fam - ilies in developing countries. Children commonly participate actively in the husbandry practices associated with their working equids around the world, and can therefore have an important impact on their welfare. The aim of this study was to investigate the recognition of nine basic needs of donkeys by children between eight and eleven years of age. Animal welfare talks were provided in classrooms of schools in the community of Tuliman, Mexico, to children between eight and eleven years of age. Children were then asked to represent their donkey’s needs through drawings. The number and per - centage of children able to recognize different needs was then quantified. Through their drawings, children easily recognized the need to provide food and water, but they rarely recognized the need for veterinary services. Inclu - sion of educational strategies at younger ages could have an impact on the welfare of working equids within communities."

In an effort to develop an effective and affordable oral vaccine against porcine Taenia solium cysticercosis, the S3Pvac anti-cysticercosis vaccine was expressed in papaya calli. Taenia pisiformis experimental rabbit cysticercosis was used as a model to compare the efficacy of the oral vaccine vs. the injectable S3Pvac-synthetic and S3Pvac-phage versions. Oral S3Pvac-papaya significantly reduced the expected number of hepatic lesions and peritoneal cysticerci to a similar extent than the injectable vaccines. This study reports for the first time an effective oral vaccine against T. pisiformis cysticercosis, possibly useful against porcine T. solium cysticercosis.

The S3Pvac synthetic vaccine, composed of three peptides (GK1, KETc1 and KETc12) effectively protects against cysticercosis under experimental and field conditions. Additionally, S3Pvac vaccine can effectively damage early-established cysticerci in experimentally lightly infected young pigs. This study was designed to explore if also fully-developed cysticerci that eluded immunity induced by the infection can be damaged by S3Pvac-induced immunity in naturally, heavily infected adult pigs. Fourteen pigs identified as cysticercotic by tongue inspection from rural communities were purchased and moved to controlled conditions in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Half of these pigs were treated once a month three times with S3Pvac plus saponin, and the other half received only saponin (controls). Twelve months later pigs were euthanized, and the number of cysticerci, their macro and microscopic status and their capacity to transform into tapeworms were determined. S3Pvac failed to damage fully-developed muscle cysticerci of naturally, heavily infected adult pigs. To explore possible factors involved in the failure of the therapeutic capacity pooled sera from control and treated cysticercotic pigs were added to mice mononuclear peripheral cells. Pooled sera from non-infected pigs were also tested. Sera from control and treated infected pigs almost completely suppressed the T cell proliferative responses, pointing to the presence of suppressor factors. In conclusion, S3Pvac vaccine failed to damage fully-developed cysticerci in pigs in which a host parasite relationship had evolved after months of infection with immunological implications.

This study was designed to explore if each individual case of naturally acquired porcine cysticercosis, living in different geographic rural areas of central Mexico, is caused by one or more different specimens of Taenia solium tapeworm. The genetic variability among cysticerci from the same pig and that from different pigs was assessed by random amplified polymorphic DNA markers (RAPDs), through the percentage of polymorphic loci, the number of effective alleles, the expected heterozygosity and the Shannon index. The parasite population's reproductive structure was estimated through the association index (I(A)), and the degree of genetic differentiation and variation was determined using AMOVA. Using six different random primers, and a total of 181 cysticerci from 14 pigs, 88 different loci were amplified: 85% were polymorphic between pigs and 24% within pigs. The phenogram grouped the cysticerci into eight major clusters, with differences in the genetic distances among all cysticerci from 14 pigs ranging from 0.78 to 1. Most of the cysticerci grouped in accord with their different geographical origin and with their pig of origin. The similarity matrix produced from the phenogram (obtained by UPGMA) and the original similarity matrix yielded a good cophenetic correlation (r=0.82317, P=0.0004), which suggests that the phenogram accurately represents the original genetic similarities between isolates. The combination of I(A) (0.0-0.089) with the genetic diversity index (0.009-0.073) supports the idea that DNA diversity in T. solium cysticerci of naturally infected pigs is within the range expected from a recombination process occurring during sexual reproduction. The small genetic diversity found within the cysticerci of each pig (33.81%), when compared with that between pigs (66.19%), indicates that pigs are rarely infected by different tapeworms. It would then appear that porcine cysticercosis courses with effective concomitant immunity, as occurs in ovine cysticercosis.

Hormones play a significant role in murine Taenia crassiceps cysticercosis, and they may also participate in the susceptibility to Taenia solium cysticercosis. In the present study, in vitro effects are reported for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on the larval stages of T. crassiceps (WFU strain) and T. solium. Our results reveal the presence of receptors for hCG in different developmental phases of both cultured parasites. On day 30, both taeniid species had the highest percentage of receptors in the neck, strobila, and suckers, but these receptors decreased by day 60, delimiting the segments and the exterior of the developing proglottids in T. solium. At the same time, there was a large number of hCG receptors in the area of the presumptive cirrus organ and in calcareous corpuscles within the parenchyma. This is the first report detecting receptors for hCG on different larval stages of T. crassiceps and T. solium. A direct effect of hCG could be recognized by the cysticerci as a factor contributing to the growth and development of T. crassiceps and T. solium cysticerci, respectively.

Summary Objective To describe and compare the clinical impacts of neurocysticercosis (NC) caused by Taenia solium in humans and pigs. Methods Comparative study of the brains of 16 asymptomatic pigs and 35 human NC cases (15 asymptomatic and 20 symptomatic). Taenia solium cysticercosis is still an important parasitosis in rural pigs in many developing countries, México among them. The main causes for the persistence of this condition are lack of hygiene in the rural communities, lack of education of the animal owners, lack of control in the trade of pigs and their meat and lack of conscientious meat inspection. The pig production systems in the marginated areas of Mexico are briefly mentioned and it is stressed that among the important reasons for the persistence of the reproductive cycle of Taenia solium is the fact that appropriate toilet facilities in village dwellings are not mandatory. The diagnostic methods of cysticercosis in the living pigs and in their meat are discussed and the degenerative stages of the larvae as well as methods to test their viability are explained. The treatment of infected pigs and their meat is discussed. Recommendations for control programmes are given.

Review of experimental and observational evidence about various cestode infections of mammalian hosts revives hope for the development of an effective vaccine against adult intestinal tapeworms, the central protagonists in their transmission dynamics. As for Taenia solium, there are abundant immunological data regarding cysticercosis in humans and pigs, but information about human taeniasis is scarce. A single publication reporting protection against T. solium taeniasis by experimental primo infection and by vaccination of an experimental foster host, the immunocompetent female hamster, kindles the hope of a vaccine against the tapeworm to be used in humans, its only natural definitive host.

With the aim of genotyping Echinococcus granulosus cysts found in Mexican livestock, we collected hydatid cysts from the livers and lungs of pigs in slaughterhouses in the state of Morelos, Central Region of Mexico. DNA was extracted from the parasites and examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of rDNA internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1-PCR), Eg9-PCR, Eg16-PCR, and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). In addition, fragments of the genes coding for mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) and NADH dehydrogenase 1 (ND1) were sequenced. Two different genotypes of E. granulosus were unequivocally identified, the common sheep genotype, G1, and the common pig genotype, G7. The G1 genotype of E. granulosus has not been previously demonstrated in Mexico. Because of its recognized infectivity in humans, G1 genotype is a direct threat to human health and its presence in Mexico is consequently of immediate public health importance and epidemiological relevance.

Taenia soliumcysticercosis is a parasitic disease frequently affecting human health and the pig industry in many developing countries. A synthetic peptide vaccine (designated S3Pvac) against porcine cysticercosis has been developed previously as an aid to interrupt transmission and has been shown to be effective. The results of the present study support the effectiveness of the vaccine under endemic field conditions. However, given the time-frame of the vaccination trial, no changes in the local levels of transmission were detectable before and after vaccination using sentinel pigs. Thus, this investigation shows the limited usefulness of single vaccination as the sole means of interruptingTaenia soliumtransmission in an endemic region.

The S3Pvac synthetic vaccine composed of three peptides (GK1, KETc1 and KETc12) effectively protect against pig cysticercosis. Preliminary results point to an additional cysticidal capacity induced by S3Pvac or GK1 immunization. Herein, clear evidences of the cysticidal effect of S3Pvac but not of GK1 are presented. S3Pvac immunization of already experimentally infected pigs induced a reduction in the parasite load, in the vesicular cysticerci and in their viability. It also substantially increases the percent of histological damaged cysticerci more importantly in muscles than in brains, with a concomitant reduction in the antibody levels. Thus, S3Pvac represents a powerful means of controlling cysticercosis infection in pigs.
