Previous studies have focused on whether a trial-based functional analysis (FA) yields the same outcomes as more traditional FAs, and whether interventions based on trial-based FAs can reduce socially maintained problem behavior. We included a full range of behavior functions and taught 3 teachers to conduct a trial-based FA with 3 boys with developmental and intellectual disabilities who engaged in problem behavior. Based on the results of the trial-based FAs, we developed and conducted 5 function-based interventions, using differential reinforcement of an alternative behavior and extinction in all but 1 case. In the remaining case, we used noncontingent reinforcement. All interventions led to reductions in problem behavior and increases in alternative behavior.

Video clips may be an effective format for presenting complex stimuli in preference assessments. In this preliminary study, we evaluated the correspondence between preference hierarchies generated from preference assessments that included either toys or videos of the toys. The top-ranked item corresponded in both assessments for 5 of the 6 participants, and the top- and bottom-ranked items corresponded for 4 participants. The implications of these results for future research on video preference assessments are discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)

Increasingly, less educated Americans are struggling with self-sufficiency. Low-end jobs are diminishing, and adults who left high school with education adequate to support themselves now find their marketable skills limited. Recent welfare reforms restrict assistance, leaving struggling workers with dwindling aid. Changing family structures result in rising numbers of families reliant upon a single parent. As a result, many adults are returning to academia out of necessity rather than choice. The article discusses circumstances common to many adult students, their challenges and supports. Field crop fertilizer recommendations for Ohio, Indiana and Michigan are currently based on the Bray P1 extractant for phosphorus (P) and the ammonium acetate extractant (AA) for base cations. The fertilizer recommendations in this Tri-State region are currently being revised and will use the Mehlich-3 soil test extractant as the new basis for P and potassium (K) fertilizer recommendations. The goal of this study was to document the relationships between Mehlich-3, Bray P1, and AA soil test extractants and to provide a comprehensive review of these relationships published in the literature. Soil samples (n = 2,659) were collected across Ohio and Indiana from a diverse range of fields and analyzed for Mehlich-3, Bray P1 and AA extractable nutrients for P, K, calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg). Mehlich-3 P values were highly related to, but 35% greater than Bray P1 values. Mehlich-3 values were highly related to AA values, but 14% greater than AA-K, 13% greater than AA-Ca and 20% greater than AA-Mg. Our results are largely consistent with a comprehensively compiled literature review that indicates Mehlich-3 is an efficient and suitable soil test extractant for assessing extractable nutrient levels in the Tri-State region of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Background: Speciation analysis is essential when evaluating risks from arsenic (As) exposure. In an oral exposure scenario, the importance of presystemic metabolism by gut microorganisms has been evidenced with in vivo animal models and in vitro experiments with animal microbiota. However, it is unclear whether human microbiota display similar As metabolism, especially when present in a contaminated matrix. Objectives: We evaluated the metabolic potency of in vitro cultured human colon microbiota toward inorganic As (iAs) and As-contaminated soils. Methods: A colon microbial community was cultured in a dynamic model of the human gut. These colon microbiota were incubated with iAs and with As-contaminated urban soils. We determined As speciation analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results: We found a high degree of methylation for colon digests both of iAs (10 μ g methylarsenical/g biomass/hr) and of As-contaminated soils (up to 28 μ g/g biomass/hr). Besides the formation of monomethylarsonic acid (MMAV), we detected the highly toxic monomethylarsonous acid (MMAIII). Moreover, this is the first description of microbial thiolation leading to monomethylmonothioarsonic acid (MMMTAV). MMMTAV, the toxicokinetic properties of which are not well known, was in many cases a major metabolite. Conclusions: Presystemic As metabolism is a significant process in the human body. Toxicokinetic studies aiming to completely elucidate the As metabolic pathway would therefore benefit from incorporating the metabolic potency of human gut microbiota.
