4. A Survey of Applied Machine Learning Techniques for Optical OFDM based Networks

Abstract

In this survey, we analyze the newest machine learning (ML) techniques for optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM)-based optical communications. ML has been proposed to mitigate channel and transceiver imperfections. For instance, ML can improve the signal quality under low modulation extinction ratio or can tackle both determinist and stochastic-induced nonlinearities such as parametric noise amplification in long-haul transmission. The proposed ML algorithms for O-OFDM can in particularly tackle inter-subcarrier nonlinear effects such as four-wave mixing and cross-phase modulation. In essence, these ML techniques could be beneficial for any multi-carrier approach (e.g. filter bank modulation). Supervised and unsupervised ML techniques are analyzed in terms of both O-OFDM transmission performance and computational complexity for potential real-time implementation. We indicate the strict conditions under which a ML algorithm should perform classification, regression or clustering. Abstract

International audience; This paper represents a new MIMO antenna design with compact diversity resonators for future smartphone applications. Four pairs of diversity monopoles with CPW feeding have been deployed at the mainboard’s corners to create an 8×8 MIMO configuration. The array designed takes up a comparatively compact space. The design’s antenna radiators have been etched onto the layer that shares the same surface as the PCB ground. The MIMO antenna is designed for 3.6 GHz of sub-6 GHz spectrum and offers a 3.4-3.8 GHz bandwidth. Overall, the planned MIMO array can achieve optimal results and meet the demand for future 5G portable devices such as smartphones.

Abstract

The Sixth Generation (6G) networks have identified the use of frequency range between 95 GHz and 3 THz with a targeted data rate of 1 Terabytes/second at the access network for holographic video applications. As is demands broadening of spectrum at the core network, this paper proposes a Supercontinuum Generation (SCG) through photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as it provides excellent broadening of the optical spectrum. Discussed in the paper is supercontinuum generation at high pumping power as per the standards specified by the International Telecommunications Union. The proposed PCF is designed with silicon nanocrystal core and the cladding microstructures is arranged in a fusion approach to effectively optimize the optical parameters such as dispersion, nonlinearity, birefringence, group‐velocity dispersion, and confinement loss. The fused cladding comprises of a flower‐cladding assembly in which air‐holes arrangement is inspired from petals in a pleated structure. Such arrangement is shown here to provide high nonlinearity and negative dispersion for high power supercontinuum generation. The novel nanocore assembly with improved structural constraints delivers a non‐linearity of 6.37 × 106 W−1 km−1 and a negative dispersion of −142.1 (ps/nm‐km) at 1,550 nm. Moreover, a supercontinuum spectrum is generated using different pulse widths ranging from 350 to 650 ps with 25 kW pump power for PCF lengths of 10 and 15 mm. Abstract

International audience; This paper proposed the use of physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) cross-layer approach to obtain two goals outlined by the next-generation V2X (NGV) 's project authorisation request (PAR) of IEEE 802.11bd group, namely having twice the MAC layer throughput and able to operate in a high mobility scenario of up to 500 km/h. At the PHY layer, we suggested utilising mid-ambles channel estimation (MCE), dual-carrier modulation (DCM), and multiple-input multiple-output space-time block coding (MIMO-STBC). At the MAC layer, we suggested an aggregate MAC protocol data unit (A-MPDU) aggregation technique, choosing an appropriate contention window (CW) value, and setting a limit for re-transmissions. We designed a model utilising a cross-layer approach then we simulated the performance of normalised system throughput for two types of V2X applications, namely safety-related (high reliability) and non-safety (high throughput) V2X applications. To better portray the high-mobility scenario, we used the enhanced highway line of sight (LOS) channel model. Our simulation results showed two times normalized throughput performance improvement for both V2X applications in a high mobility environment, as requested by the NGV standard's PAR.

Abstract

International audience; Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been identified as a potential fundamental shift for the design of multiple access systems. Over a high Doubly Selective (DS) channel scenario, this paper considers the use of NOMA system based on Multi-Carrier Modulation (MCM) with various waveforms, with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Filter Bank Multicarrier Modulation (FBMC) as special cases. Furthermore, we investigate the Imperfect Successive Interference Cancellation (I-SIC). NOMA users are affected by intra-user interference and inter-user interference in this situation. To this end, an adaptive receiver scheme that combines one-tap equalization and a joint iterative interference cancellation, proposed in literature, is introduced. The receiver selects the appropriate data detection mechanism based on the power allocation factor and hence the channel constraints. The One-Tap equalizer is so useful in practice. Unfortunately, once the DS channel and NOMA induced interference begin to dominate the noise, a one-tap equalization under-performs. On the other hand, by using the joint iterative interference cancellation approach, performance will be greatly improved at the cost of computational complexity. Moreover, numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the efficacy of the suggested combined strategy in contrast to the theoretical Perfect-SIC (PSIC) condition.

Abstract

International audience; Design and analysis of a compact multi-band flexible antenna are presented here. The antenna is designed using the flexible substrate material Rogers 5880 and has a compact size of 18mm×18mm×0.254mm. The coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed radiator consists of a rectangular-shaped patch modified using a pair of rectangular slots to achieve the required bandwidth. Another smaller slot was etched in the radiator to achieve a lower resonance. The proposed design offers a multi-band functionality covering ISM, WLAN, Wi-Fi, and upper 5G sub-6-GHz bands.

Abstract

International audience; The number of road accidents has remained stable in recent years. By using the latest technologies such as vehicle-to-vehicle communications, it is possible to improve road safety and reduce the number of road fatalities, especially for vulnerable road users (VRUs). There are two existing radio access technologies (RAT) for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, i.e., Wi-Fi -based by IEEE (802.11p and its next-generation standard 802.11bd), and cellular-based by 3GPP (LTE-V2X and 5G NR-V2X). Although many works have evaluated and compared the performance of V2V RAT communications, very little work has been done to compare the performance of these technologies in the context of vehicle-VRU communications. In this paper, we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first work that evaluates the performance of each RAT in the context of vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) and vehicle-to-cyclist (V2C) communications. Using four performance metrics, namely packet error rate (PER), packet reception rate (PRR), throughput, and latency, we examined whether each RAT can meet the requirements of safety applications intended for implementation in urban areas. The answer to this question is yes. However, each RAT has its own performance profile. In terms of PER and PRR, 802.11bd has an advantage, while in terms of throughput and latency, 5G NR-V2X performs better.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a novel 3-D shared aperture 3 x 3 matrix antenna-array for 26 GHz band 5 G wireless networks. Radiation elements constituting the array are hexagonal-shaped patches that are elevated above the common dielectric substrate by 3.35 mm and excited through a metallic rod of 0.4 mm diameter. The rod protrudes through the substrate of 0.8 mm thickness. It is shown that by isolating each radiating element in the array with a wall suppresses unwanted electromagnetic (EM) wave interactions, resulting in improvement in the antenna's impedance matching and radiation characteristics. Moreover, the results show that by embedding hexagonalshaped slots in the patches improve the antenna's gain and radiation efficiency performance. The subwavelength length slots in the patches essentially transform the radiating elements to exhibit metasurface characteristics when the array is illuminated by EM-waves. The proposed array structure has an average gain and radiation efficiency of 20 dBi and 93%, respectively, across 24.0-28.4 GHz. The isolation between its radiation elements is greater than 22 dB. Compared to the unslotted array the improvement in isolation between radiating elements is greater than 11 dB, and the gain and efficiency are better than 10.5 dBi, and 25%, respectively.
