1. Characterization and mapping of surface physical properties of Mars from CRISM multi-angular data: application to Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum

Abstract

The analysis of the surface texture from the particle (grain size, shape and internal structure) to its organization (surface roughness) provides information on the geological processes. CRISM multi-angular observations (varied emission angles) allow to characterize the surface scattering behavior which depends on the composition but also the material physical properties (e.g., grain size, shape, internal structure, the surface roughness). After an atmospheric correction by the Multi-angle Approach for Retrieval of the Surface Reflectance from CRISM Observations, the surface reflectances at different geometries are analyzed by inverting the Hapke photometric model depending on the single scattering albedo, the 2-term phase function, the macroscopic roughness and the 2-term opposition effects. Surface photometric maps are created to observe the spatial variations of surface scattering properties as a function of geological units at the CRISM spatial resolution (200m/pixel). An application at the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) landing sites located at Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum where orbital and in situ observations are available, is presented. Complementary orbital observations (e.g. CRISM spectra, THermal EMission Imaging System, High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment images) are used for interpreting the estimated Hapke photometric parameters in terms of physical properties. The in situ observations are used as ground truth to validate the interpretations. Varied scattering properties are observed inside a CRISM observation (5x10km) suggesting that the surfaces are controlled by local geological processes (e.g. volcanic resurfacing, aeolian and impact processes) rather than regional or global. Consistent results with the in situ observations are observed thus validating the approach and the use of photometry for the characterization of Martian surface physical properties.

Abstract

The present article proposes an approach to analyze the photometric properties of the surface materials from multi-angle observations acquired by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on-board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. We estimate photometric parameters using Hapke model in a Bayesian inversion framework. This work also represents a validation of the atmospheric correction provided by the Multi-angle Approach for Retrieval of Surface Reflectance from CRISM Observations (MARS-ReCO) proposed in the companion article.The latter algorithm retrieves photometric curves of surface materials in reflectance units after removing the aerosol contribution. This validation is done by comparing the estimated photometric parameters to those obtained from in situ measurements by Panoramic Camera instrument at the Mars Exploration Rover (MER)-Spirit and MER-Opportunity landing sites. Consistent photometric parameters with those from in situ measurements are found, demonstrating that MARS-ReCO gives access to accurate surface reflectance. Moreover the assumption of a non-Lambertian surface as included in MARS-ReCO is shown to be significantly more precise to estimate surface photometric properties from space in comparison to methods based on a Lambertian surface assumption. In the future, the presented method will allow us to map from orbit the surface bidirectional reflectance and the related photometric parameters in order to characterize the Martian surface.

Abstract

On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2-7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam's science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

Erard (e) Keywords: Moon; Spectroscopy; Mineralogy; Geological processes Abstract: Combining UVVIS and NIR Clementine spectral data, we characterize the mineralogy of the different volcanic and crustal materials occurring on the Aristarchus Plateau and its close vicinity, in order to investigate their stratigraphic relationships and understand the nature of the crust in this region of the Moon. From an iterative linear mixture modeling, we provide a comprehensive description of the distribution and amount of surface mixture of the units, and document the stratigraphic relationships in the region of study. The determination of clear relationships and origin of the different units forming the structure of the Plateau is not obvious as the surface materials (to a depth less than 1 km) represent complex materials from the Imbrium impact event. In the Aristarchus region, we show that the Imbrium ejecta has a norite and anorthosite rich composition, with the presence of a clinopyroxene component in the uppermost layer (AER and NE units in the text). Alternatively, AER may form a rather thick horizon emplaced on an NE-rich unit, or AER and NE form a single thick horizon showing a gradational compositional change from AER to NE, from the south to the north of the Plateau. Due to its size, the Aristarchus crater must have penetrated through the Imbrium ejecta and exposed underlying layers formed by pre-Imbrian ejecta and/or the original crust. The regional crustal unit (AP for 'Aristarchus peak' in the text), i.e., the deepest horizon exposed by the Aristarchus crater likely originates from a pluri kilometer depth, and is represented by feldspar-rich materials with clinopyroxene and olivine as mafic components. Other deep crustal units, at a stratigraphic level close to the deepest horizon AP, or intermediate between AP and the uppermost horizon AER, and locally distributed in the Aristarchus crater and its vicinity (Aristarchus A crater, and the scarp forming the southern edge of the Plateau), are represented by pyroxene-bearing anorthosite (SC unit) and olivine-rich (OL unit) composition. Although in low abundance, olivine-rich materials are found to be widespread in this region of the Moon. Volcanic pyroclastic deposits (DMD) are widely exposed on the Plateau, with high abundances and a fairly homogeneous composition. We suggest their emplacement could have possibly lasted up to the Eratosthenian, thus leading to a more important pyroclastic activity in time than previously thought, and a rather voluminous and stable reservoir for their source. Based on their UVVIS and NIR spectral characteristics, SW-type materials characterizing the mare basalts west of the Plateau are not detected as a major component across the Plateau. However, SW-type material is significantly present in the complex ejecta of the Aristarchus crater, probably due to the particular morphology of the target, straddling the edge of the Plateau which rises about 2 km above Oceanus Procellarum. The present study based on the integrated visible-near infrared Clementine dataset paves the way for high spatial resolution surveys based on recent photometric observations (e.g., AMIE/Smart-1) and/or upcoming detailed spectroscopic observations [LISM/Kaguya-Selene; M3 (Moon Mineralogy Mapper)/Chandraayan-1]. Abstract

Slope streaks are gravity-driven albedo features observed on martian slopes since the Viking missions. The debated mechanism of formation could involve alternatively dry granular flow or wet mass wasting. A systematic mapping of slope streaks from the High Resolution Stereo Camera is presented in this paper. Two regions known for their slope streaks activity have been studied, the first one is located close to Cerberus lava flow, and the second one is inside the Olympus Mons Aureole. The statistics of slope streaks shapes measured from orthorectified images confirm previous results from Mars Orbiter Camera surveys. Preferential orientations of slope streaks are reported. Slope streaks occur preferentially on west facing slopes at latitudes lower than 30[degrees] N for Olympus and on south west facing slopes for Cerberus. Wind directions derived from a General Circulation Model during the dusty season correlate with these orientations. Furthermore, west facing slopes at Olympus have a thicker dust cover. These observations indicate that slope streaks are dust avalanches controlled by the preferential accumulation of dust in the downstream side of the wind flow. The paucity of slope streaks at high latitudes and their preferential orientation on south facing slopes have been presented as tin evidence for a potential role of [H.sub.2]O phase transition in triggering or flow. The potential role of [H.sub.2]O cannot be ruled out from our observations but the dust avalanche model together with the atmospheric circulation could potentially explain all observations. The role of [H.sub.2]O might be limited to at stabilizing effect of dust deposits on northward facing slopes at intermediate latitudes (30[degrees] N-33[degrees] N) and on all slopes further north. 47. Tracing Carbonate Formation, Serpentinization, and Biological Materials With Micro-/Meso-Scale Infrared Imaging Spectroscopy in a Mars Analog System, Samail Ophiolite, Oman.

Abstract

Visible-shortwave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectrometers map composition remotely with spatial context, typically at many meters-scale from orbital and airborne data. Here, we evaluate VSWIR imaging spectroscopy capabilities at centimeters to sub-millimeter scale at the Samail Ophiolite, Oman, where mafic and ultramafic lithologies and their alteration products, including serpentine and carbonates, are exposed in a semi-arid environment, analogous to similar mineral associations observed from Mars orbit that will be explored by the Mars-2020 rover. At outcrop and hand specimen scales, VSWIR spectroscopy (a) identifies cross-cutting veins of calcite, dolomite, magnesite, serpentine, and chlorite that record pathways and time-order of multiple alteration events of changing fluid composition; (b) detects small-scale, partially altered remnant pyroxenes and localized epidote and prehnite that indicate protolith composition and temperatures and pressures of multiple generations of faulting and alteration, respectively; and (c) discriminates between spectrally similar carbonate and serpentine phases and carbonate solid solutions. In natural magnesite veins, minor amounts of ferrous iron can appear similar to olivine's strong 1-μm absorption, though no olivine is present. We also find that mineral identification for carbonate and serpentine in mixtures with each other is strongly scale- and texture-dependent; ∼40 area% dolomite in mm-scale veins at one serpentinite outcrop and ∼18 area% serpentine in a calcite-rich travertine outcrop are not discriminated until spatial scales of <∼1-2 cm/pixel. We found biological materials, for example bacterial mats versus vascular plants, are differentiated using wavelengths <1 μm while shortwave infrared wavelengths >1 μm are required to identify most organic materials and distinguish most mineral phases., (© 2021 The Authors.)
