Abstract

The statistical literature on tests to compare treatments after the analysis of variance is reviewed, and the use of these tests in ecology is examined. Monte Carlo simulations on normal and lognormal data indicate that many of the tests commonly used are inappropriate or inefficient. Particular tests are recommended for unplanned multiple comparisons on the basis of controlling experimentwise type I error rate and providing maximum power. These include tests for parametric and nonparametric cases, equal and unequal sample sizes, homogeneous and heterogeneous variances, non-independent means (repeated measures or adjusted means), and comparing treatments to a control. Formulae and a worked example are provided. The problem of violations of assumptions, especially variance heterogeneity, was investigated using simulations, and particular strategies are recommended. The advantages and use of planned comparisons in ecology are discussed, and the philosophy of hypothesis testing with unplanned multiple comparisons is considered in relation to confidence intervals and statistical estimation.

10. The novel use of harvest policies and rapid visual assessment to manage spatially complex abalone resources (Genus Haliotis)

Abstract

To date, the development of fisheries harvest policies has typically focused on the use of indices estimated from quantitative stock assessment models. Where does this leave the small-scale and spatially complex resources for which costs and logistics prevent adequate data collection for the construction of quantitative assessment models at scales appropriate for the component populations being fished? This paper presents a novel harvest policy framework developed in Australia by the Victorian Western Zone Abalone Diver's Association (WADA) to assess and manage their resource at the scale of component abalone reefs (100s-1000s m). This novel harvest policy framework uses a rapid visual evaluation of population fecundity based on shell shape and appearance. Codified and applied using a decision tree, it is being used in Australia by an increasing number of zonal abalone industry associations. Abalone populations on reef complexes are being assessed and managed with voluntary catch caps and voluntary minimum lengths larger than legal minimum lengths. It will probably be decades before a satisfactory quantitative analysis on the efficacy of the approach will be possible, but positive anecdotal accounts and the relatively rapid spread of the approach suggest industry members believe they are seeing benefits.

Abstract

Aeromagnetic and ground-magnetic data were used to construct a dyke-outcrop map, and magnetic, palaeomagnetic and radiometric data were used to determine the relative and actual ages of these dykes. Several groups of dykes were found, with probable ages ranging from pre-Bushveld to post- Karoo. The major dyke directions were found to correlate with joint directions in the Chuniespoort Group and also with the present day stress field in the study area. Abstract

Egg quality has important effects on the performance of invertebrate offspring. Abalone produce eggs variable in size and quality and this may be a strategy to balance the risks between egg size and egg number in a variable environment.Histological sections of mature ovaries are presented. Fertilisation of eggs from seven different females was carried out in the hatchery using a broad range of sperm concentrations to determine the optimum. Fertilised and non-fertilised eggs were measured to determine the importance of size for fertilisation. Optimum sperm concentration was found to be between 5×106 and 108 sperm per litre (approximately 10,000–200,000 sperm/egg ratios). The development of oocytes in the gonad before spawning was not uniform, resulting in eggs that varied in size. At suboptimal sperm concentrations, eggs with larger cytoplasm had more chance of being fertilised, regardless of their vitelline thickness or total vitelline diameter. This pattern was consistent within clutches and between females. Eggs were found to expand after spawning. We discuss the importance of producing variable sizes of eggs and speculate that this variability may be an adaptive response to a highly variable and unpredictable environment or part of a density-dependent regulatory mechanism.
