3. Vernacular Houses in Nineteenth-Century California

Abstract

Colonists and settlers of nineteenth-century California built simple houses with available materials and skills. This bounded case study of selected Northern California houses for artisans, agriculture workers, shopkeepers, public servants, gold diggers, and industrial workers is informed by Dell Upton’s vernacular housing studies. It explains how specific regional contexts influenced local dwelling design, construction, and amenities, while acknowledging that housing was a part of larger economic, transportation, and information networks. Early Spanish/Mexican pueblo (town) and rancho (cattle ranch) adobes were typically one-room buildings with thatched roofs, dirt floors, and few windows. Construction of adobes was time-consuming and produced high-maintenance structures better suited to Southern California than to the high-rainfall, forested landscapes to which the Gold Rush drew American and international settlers. These newcomers sought shelter in tents or in crudely constructed log- and wood-frame dwellings. As the cultural context evolved from Spanish/Mexican to American/Northern European dominance, trade and immigration increased, with adobe and wood-frame builders taking advantage of the transition from an economy controlled by Spain and Mexico to one shaped by international market forces. Increased economic prosperity, the emergence of a California merchant class, industrialization of lumber production, the arrival of immigrants with building skills, and the growing availability of new and readily available building materials improved California’s housing stock. Interspersed among crude frontier shelters came adobes with stone foundations, wood floors, and interior fireplaces, and redwood cottages framed of dimensional, sawmill-cut lumber. By the end of the nineteenth century, wood structures outnumbered those of adobe. While wood prevailed as a structural material, builders often reproduced the form, massing, and style of earlier adobes, as expressed in the California ranch houses that were twentieth-century America’s most popular housing style.

4. Conducting an In-House Periodical Use Study: A Checklist. Occasional Paper Series, No. 12.

Abstract

This is a step-by-step guide to designing and conducting an assessment of the in-house use of periodicals in a library. It focuses on in-house use because libraries that allow their periodicals to circulate probably already have mechanisms to track circulation. The guide consists of an explanatory text followed by a checklist. The checklist includes the factors that need to be considered in the planning stages for such a study. Each library can customize the study, choosing the factors and methods that suit the situation. The most important decision to be made is the purpose of the study. The design of a periodical use study should reflect the decisions to be made with the data obtained. The following sections of both text and checklist are included: (1) purpose of the study; (2) scope of the study; (3) methodology; (4) data tabulation; (5) publicity; (6) staffing; and (7) pilot study. The checklist also includes a section on costs of the study. A bibliography of 49 sources is included for further information. (SLD)

6. British Sign Name Customs

Abstract

Research presented here describes the sign names and the customs of name allocation within the British Deaf community. While some aspects of British Sign Language sign names and British Deaf naming customs differ from those in most Western societies, there are many similarities. There are also similarities with other societies outside the more familiar cultures of most English-speakers. Naming customs in the British Deaf community are shown here to vary over time, with changes in education and other key elements of the British Deaf experience influencing the choice and use of sign names. While descriptive sign names are important within the British Deaf community, arbitrary signs, and those derived from the English language are also important. Additionally BSL sign names are shown to vary among different sections of the Deaf community. In contrast to reports from America, we find that British Deaf parents in the past have rarely allocated sign names to their children--deaf or hearing--beyond fingerspelled forms of their English names. Some of these children of Deaf parents retain these fingerspelled forms throughout their lives. Others only acquire names motivated by descriptive processes on entering school or even later in life. Thus, we conclude that, unlike people in many societies, the overwhelming majority of British Deaf people appear to acquire descriptive sign names from outside their families. Abstract

The guide, developed as part of an exemplary program for junior high school students, contains lesson plans, independent study guides, and resource lists for junior high school home economics classes. One page describes the seventh grade unit which consists of an in-class presentation by the director of a nurses aid volunteer program. Nine pages cover the eighth grade unit which consists of worksheets, assignments, and questionnaires, related to the following career areas: home related, health, child care, food, clothing and fabrics, home and/or furnishings. Eighteen pages deal with the ninth grade unit which consists of four lessons: "Values and Feelings Toward Work,""Occupational Clusters,""Looking at Myself," and "Investigating Jobs and Careers." An additional eight pages include a sample survey instrument and cover letter, a multimedia resource list and a listing of local resource people for career education. (JR)

8. An Early Academic Program in Social Service at the Pennsylvania College for Women

Abstract

The Pennsylvania College for Women, a historic women’s college in Pittsburgh, established a program in social service in 1908, at a time when new vocations were opening for college-educated women. This program is the earliest example of a social work program based at a liberal arts college in the United States. Using archival materials, this research examines the formation and the early years of the program. Four elements proved to be foundational to the viability of the program: an elective curriculum, institutional financial stability, effective leadership, and the concurrent Pittsburgh Survey. The program met vocational needs from both the students and the local workforce. The mission, structure, content, student learning, and challenges of the program are assessed. It grew rapidly over the next several years, with some minor changes. The program enjoyed expanded partnerships with local charitable agencies, and social service became increasingly central to the curriculum, the student experience, and the ideology of the college as a whole. Many of the alumnae from the program’s early years continued on to professional positions, some developing prominent careers in social work.

Study of pregnant ewes reveals that a reduction of amniotic fluid (AF) volume causes the fetus to reduce AF resorption while maintaining AF production. AF replacement induces greater urine flow without changing fetus swallowing activity. This factor suggests an intramembranous fetal AF absorption route.

Abstract

A study was done to determine whether the increase in sheep fetal hypovolemia mediates fetal plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) increase during maternal rehydration and also to examine maternal and fetal atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) responses to maternal dehydration-oral rehydration. The results showed that during prolonged maternal dehydration and subsequent oral rehydration, the fetal intravascular volume and plasma ANF levels remain the same. Oral rehydration also resulted in faster fetal rehydration than intravenous rehydration.

The taste buds that detect a sweet taste appear to be developed by the time a baby is ready to be born, according to a study in sheep. This was determined by giving the unborn lambs a sugar solution to see if they swallowed more frequently. They did, which indicates that their sweet taste buds were present.

15. Placemaking by design: fitting a large new building into a historic district

Abstract

This study of how people respond to design strategies for making new construction contextually compatible with the older buildings of a historic district is based on Amos Rapoport's theory of place meaning. The objectives was to learn what elements of architecture help people find meaning in the built environment and to suggest ways that architects and policymakers can use this knowledge. Seventy-three people who were encountered in a public square across from a new megastructure were asked to do a multiple sort task using criteria of their own choice with6 photos. Photos included an old facade that was used in the new building, other elevations of the new building, and old buildings around the square. The ways the old facade differed from the other elevations of the new building were noticed giving support to Rapoport's conclusion that people respond to the associations a place has with their own experience but they have to notice differences in what they see before they can make the association. The idea that place meaning would be effectively communicated by an obvious link to the community's past was not supported. Evidence of care being taken with the design of building having an inviting public nature is more important than explicit links to the past.

20. Reclaiming our spirits: Development and pilot testing of a health promotion intervention for indigenous women who have experienced intimate partner violence

Abstract

Indigenous women are subjected to high rates of multiple forms of violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV), in the context of ongoing colonization and neo-colonization. Health promotion interventions for women who experience violence have not been tailored specifically for Indigenous women. Reclaiming Our Spirits (ROS) is a health promotion intervention designed for Indigenous women living in an urban context in Canada. In this paper, we describe the development of the intervention, results of a pilot study, and the revised subsequent intervention. Building on a theory-based health promotion intervention (iHEAL) showing promising results in feasibility studies, ROS was developed using a series of related approaches including (a) guidance from Indigenous women with research expertise specific to IPV and Indigenous women’s experiences; (b) articulation of an Indigenous lens, including using Cree (one of the largest Indigenous language groups in North America) concepts to identify key aspects; and (c) interviews with Elders (n10) living in the study setting. Offered over 6-8 months, ROS consists of a Circle, led by an Indigenous Elder, and 1:1 visits with a Registered Nurse, focused on six areas for health promotion derived from previous research. Pilot testing with Indigenous women (n21) produced signs of improvement in most measures of health from pre- to post-intervention. Women found the pilot intervention acceptable and helpful but also offered valuable suggestions for improvement. A revised intervention, with greater structure within the Circle and nurses with stronger knowledge of Indigenous women’s experience and community health, is currently undergoing testing.

The reversible isomerization of cyclopropane with the trimethylene diradical, which is transformed to propene through a [1,2]-hydrogen shift, is presented. The thermal isomerization of 1-(super 13)C, d(sub 4) leads to isotopically labeled propene products consistent with both the commonly accepted mechanistic path involving trimethylene diradical intermediates and the theoretically predicted kinetically competitive and undemonstrated path through transient 1-propylidene intermediates.

This Covenant experience will guide participants in a comprehensive, in-depth study of the Bible over twenty-four weeks. Unlike the learning participants may have experienced in other groups, this in-depth study of the whole Bible emphasizes the biblical concept of covenant as a unifying pattern through all the books in the Old and New Testaments. It underscores the unique relationship that God chooses to have with us as God's people. This relationship is grounded in the faithfulness of God's love and on our ongoing commitment to stay in love with God while we share signs of that love with others.Each episode connects to an aspect of this covenant relationship, which is summarized in the heading of each participant guide. Abstract

The present study examined physiological and cellular responses to central application of ANG II in ovine fetuses and determined the fetal central ANG-mediated dipsogenic sites in utero. Chronically prepared near-term ovine fetuses (130 [+ or -] 2 days) received injection of ANG II (1.5 [micro]g/kg icv). Fetuses were monitored for 3.5 h for swallowing activity, after which animals were killed and fetal brains were perfused for subsequent Fos staining. Intracerebroventricular ANG II significantly increased fetal swallowing in near-term ovine fetuses (1.1 [+ or -] 0.2 to 4.5 [+ or -] 1.0 swallows/min). The initiation of stimulated fetal swallowing activity was similar to the latency of thirst responses (drinking behavior) elicited by central ANG II in adult animals. ANG II evoked increased Fos staining in putative dipsogenic centers, including the subfornical organ, organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis, and median preoptic nucleus. Intracerebroventricular injection of ANG II also caused c-fos expression in the fetal hindbrain. These results indicate that an ANG II-mediated central dipsogenic mechanism is intact before birth, acting at sites consistent with the dipsogenic neural network. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 279: E1207-E1215, 2000.--In adults, hyperosmolality stimulates central osmoreceptors, resulting in arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion. Near-term fetal sheep have also developed mechanisms to respond to intravascular hypertonicity with stimulation of in utero AVP release. However, prior studies demonstrating fetal AVP secretion have utilized plasma tonicity changes greater than those required for adult osmotically induced AVP stimulation. We sought to examine near-term fetal plasma osmolality threshold and sensitivity for stimulation of AVP secretion and to correlate plasma hormone levels with central neuronal responsiveness. Chronically instrumented ovine fetuses (130 [+ or -] 2 days) and maternal ewes simultaneously received either isotonic or hypertonic intravascular NaCl infusions. Maternal and fetal plasma AVP and angiotensin II (ANG II) levels were examined at progressively increasing levels of plasma hypertonicity. Intravenous hypertonic NaCl gradually elevated plasma osmolality and sodium levels. Both maternal and fetal plasma AVP increased during hypertonicity, whereas ANG II levels were not changed. Maternal AVP levels significantly increased with a 3% increase in plasma osmolality, whereas fetal plasma AVP significantly increased only at higher plasma osmolality levels (over 6%). Thus the slope of the regression of AVP vs. osmolality was greater for ewes than for fetuses (0.232 vs. 0.064), despite similar maternal and fetal plasma osmolality thresholds for AVP secretion (302 vs. 304 mosmol/kg). Hyperosmolality induced Fos immunoreactivity (FOS-ir) in the circumventricular organs of the fetal brain. FOS-ir was also demonstrated in the fetal supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei (SON and PVN), and double labeling demonstrated that AVP-containing neurons in the SON and PVN expressed Fos in response to intravenous NaCl. These results demonstrate that, in the ovine fetus at 130 days of gestation, neuroendocrine responses to cellular dehydration are functional, although they evidence a relatively reduced sensitivity for AVP secretion compared with the adult. hyperosmolality; arginine vasopressin neurons; fetal sheep
