Depressive and anxiety symptoms are increasingly common, and problematic alcohol use remains prevalent in college. To expand on prior research on mostly white samples, we surveyed first‐year students of color from our predominately white university (Southeastern US) to identify risk factors for mental health symptoms and potentially co‐occurring problematic alcohol use. Results showed significant associations between microaggressions and poor campus climate (hypothetical predictors) with depressive, anxiety, somatic symptoms (hypothetical outcomes) that were indirectly linked through perceived stress, poor sleep, and academic burnout (hypothetical mediators). Poor campus climate, academic burnout, and using alcohol to cope were the most relevant to alcohol use disorder symptoms. Prior research has produced conflicting findings regarding the positive outcomes of having gender diversity within top management teams. These studies have not considered the industry-specific context, the incorporation of binary, agender, and transexual traits, and potential non-financial outcomes, which play a role in organizational performance. Therefore, this paper aims to further this research by offering a research framework that is hospitality specific, highlights the benefits of gender diversity, and delineates the impact of gender diversity on firm performance and organizational justice based upon previous research and theories. The authors introduce potential processes and facilitators influencing the relationship between gender diversity, organizational performance, and organizational justice. These mechanisms have the potential to shape strategic changes, influence employee behaviors, increase service levels, and ultimately provide a competitive advantage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The US prison population has recently reached an all-time high, with women representing the fastest growing subpopulation. Correctional health-care system in the USA remains fragmented and nonuniform in practice, particularly in women's health care, with poor transitions between incarceration and release. This study aims to examine the qualitative health-care experiences of women while incarcerated and their transition into the community health-care setting. Additionally, this study also examined the experiences of a subset of women who were pregnant while incarcerated. Design/methodology/approach: After obtaining institutional review board approval, adult, English-speaking women with a history of incarceration within the past 10 years were interviewed using a semi-structured interview tool. Interview transcripts were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Findings: The authors completed 21 full interviews and identified six themes that were both the most significant and most novel: "feeling stigmatized and insignificant," "care as punishment," "delay in care," "exceptions to the rule," "fragmentation of care" and "obstetric trauma and resilience." Originality/value: Women face numerous barriers and hardships when accessing basic and reproductive health-care services while incarcerated. This hardship is particularly challenging for women with substance use disorders. The authors were able to describe for the first time, partially through their own words, novel challenges described by women interacting with incarceration health care. Community providers should understand these barriers and challenges so as to effectively reengage women in care upon release and improve the health-care status of this historically marginalized group. Abstract: Students must be prepared to lead a diverse workforce. The objective of this study was to establish a teaching method that helps students identify barriers to food safety while working in a simulated environment with communication barriers. This study employed a perspective taking exercise based upon the principles of social learning theory. Students were randomly assigned as a "manager" or an "employee." The managers were provided with a recipe and instructions in English and employees were provided with the recipe and instructions in an abstract, non-English language. Students were instructed to prepare the recipe in silence using only nonverbal communication methods. Three teaching techniques were employed under this scenario to determine the most effective method of instruction. For the 1st method (Barrier Identification), students were asked to complete an open-ended survey concerning their communication barriers in regards to food safety. Next (Modeling through Pictures), recipe books with pictures of each recipe with food safety icons were provided to half of the participants. In the 3rd scenario (Observation), students were videotaped to identify communication techniques and to identify common food safety violations. Lastly, a focus group was conducted, whereby students were required to reflect upon the experiment in order to identify specific food safety barriers. Students identified communication challenges to food safety and developed techniques to help overcome language barriers. However, the use of pictures did not increase the frequency of proper food handling procedures. This study found that a combination of gestures and demonstrations were the most valuable nonverbal forms of training. (Contains 2 tables.)
