Abstract The spatiotemporal overlap of multiple hazards defines what we call concurrent hazards, which usually cause more severe damage than what an isolated hazard would. Investigations of concurrent hazards at the global scale are limited. Here we first developed a novel criterion system for identifying concurrent hazards and then recognized 1,614 concurrent hazards during 1981–2020 from the 121,214 records including earthquake, storm, landslide, volcanic, wildfire and flood. Sixteen hot spot regions suffering from concurrent hazards were recognized for the first time at the global scale. By comparing two periods, 1981–2000 and 2001–2020, we found that the gross relative impact (economic damage and death) of concurrent hazards has considerably aggravated (6.3–117.0 times) in the past two decades. The low‐income regions suffer more prominent increase (mostly 2–3 times of high‐income regions), implying the inequitable patterns of concurrent hazard impact due to socioeconomic development. This spatial disparity entails the establishment of multidisciplinary and cross‐regional collaborations in mitigating the impact of concurrent hazards.

Location of sound sources is a fundamental task of the auditory system. Recent studies have shown that land vertebrates employ an array of sound localization strategies. We have therefore compared auditory brainstem circuits by measuring cell numbers in the cochlear nuclei in relation to brain weight among different groups of reptiles to determine if these behavioral differences are reflected in the organization of the brainstem. In extant archosaurs, the birds and crocodilians, the two ears are weakly connected pressure receivers, and sound direction is computed by binaural interactions in brain involving parallel processing of interaural time and level differences. The first-order cochlear nuclei are nucleus magnocellularis (NM) and nucleus angularis (NA). NM projects bilaterally to the nucleus laminaris (NL), where interaural time differences are computed in archosaurs. Relative to brain size, NA, NM and NL cell counts of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) are similar to those of birds. Testudines (turtles and tortoises), sister group to archosaurs, are also assumed to compute sound location from binaural interactions in the brain due to weakly connected middle ears. Compared to archosaurs, NA, NM and NL of the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta), common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) and Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) are all proportionally small. In lizards, due to the strong internal coupling of the middle ears, the cochlear nerve responses are directional, and interaural time and level differences are co-dependent and frequency dependent, suggesting that the neural processing of sound direction may be different from archosaurs. Compared to archosaurs, NM and NL of the tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) and green iguana (Iguana iguana) are proportionally small, but NA is well-developed, suggesting a greater importance of the NA pathway for the processing of the high-frequency directional information generated by the coupled ears. Snakes originated from lizard ancestors, but have secondarily lost their eardrums, and their sound localization strategies are unknown. NA and NM of the western ratsnake (Pantherophis obsoletus) are proportionally smaller than those of the lizards.

Abstract Background Posterolateral tibial plateau compression fractures (PTPCF) are one of the significant factors leading to knee instability and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction failure. The effectiveness of fixation for such cases without the use of metal implants remains inconclusive. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the fixation with isolated bone grafting is stable enough for the treatment of PTPCF with concomitant ACL injuries. Methods This retrospective study analyzed patients treated for concomitant ACL injuries and PTPCF in authors’ institution. A total of 53 patients (21 males and 32 females) with an average age of 47.43 ± 14.71 years were included. Patient data were collected, including factors leading to injury, affected side, height, weight, and basic medical history. The posterior inclination angle and the lateral tibial plateau lateral inclination angle were measured to evaluate the fixation stability. Rasmussen functional score and HSS score were used to assess the knee functional recovery. Results The bone grafting group achieved satisfactory levels of Rasmussen score (28.22 ± 0.85) and HSS knee joint function scores (95.57 ± 1.97). The cannulated screw fixation group had a Rasmussen knee joint function score of 28.70 ± 0.92 and a HSS knee joint function score of 96.07 ± 1.93. No statistically significant difference was found (P > 0.05). The cannulated screw fixation group had a mean posterior inclination angle reduction loss of 0.20° ± 1.11°, while the bone grafting group had a reduction loss of 0.18° ± 1.01°, with no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). The cannulated screw fixation group had a lateral inclination angle reduction loss of 0.01° ± 0.37°, and the bone grafting group had a reduction loss of 0.03° ± 0.43°, with no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). Conclusion The use of bone grafting for fixation of PTPCF with accompanying ACL injuries demonstrated no substantial disparities in knee joint function. In cases of simple PTPCF, filling and compacting the bone defect underneath the tibial plateau fracture fragment can yield satisfactory fixation, obviating the necessity for supplementary cannulate screw fixation.

Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are known for their long-term stability. Using six years of observations from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), we have conducted an in-depth analysis of the X-ray timing results for six MSPs: PSRs B1937+21, B1821-24, J0437-4715, J0030+0451, J0218+4232, and J2124-3358. The timing stability parameter σz has been calculated, revealing remarkable timing precision on the order of 10−14 for PSRs B1937+21 and J0437-4715, and 10−13 for PSRs B1821-24, J0218+4232, and J0030+0451 over a timescale of 1000 days. These findings underscore the feasibility of autonomous in-orbit timekeeping using X-ray observations of MSPs. In addition, the consistency of long-term spin-down noise in the X-ray and radio bands has been investigated by comparison with IPTA radio data.

Abstract Background Patellar dislocation is common in young people. Although isolated anatomic double-bundle reconstruction of the MPFL is a common and effective surgical treatment for patellofemoral instability, concerns about the risk of injury to the epiphysis remain. Methods A total of 21 children and adolescents (9 males, 12 females; mean age: 10.7 years; range: 8 to 13 years) with recurrent patella dislocation or symptomatic instability following a primary dislocation were enrolled in the study. In all patients, double-bundle medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction and femoral sling procedure were performed under arthroscopy, using an anterior half peroneus longus tendon (AHPLT) autograft. Functional outcomes were evaluated preoperatively and during follow-ups based on Kujala and Lysholm scores. Radiological examinations including radiographs, 3D-CT, and MRI were performed pre- and post-operatively. Herein, we present an in-depth investigation into the enhancement of catalytic soot oxidation through cerium-doped three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) La-Co-Ni-based perovskites synthesized with the colloidal crystal template (CCT) method. The 3DOM structure significantly contributes to the accessibility and interaction efficiency between soot and catalyst. Based on the results of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), temperature-programmed oxidation of NO (NO-TPO), temperature-programmed reduction of H2 (H2-TPR), in situ infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (In-situ DRIFTS), and temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) reactions, the role of cerium doping in modifying the structural and catalytic properties of 3DOM perovskite-type La2−xCexCoNiO6 catalysts was investigated systematically. The optimized cerium doping ratio in La2−xCexCoNiO6 catalysts can improve the microenvironment for efficient soot-catalyst contact, enhancing the catalytic activity of soot oxidation. Among the catalysts, the 3DOM La0.8Ce1.2CoNiO6 catalyst shows the highest catalytic activity for soot oxidation, whose T10, T50, and T90 values are 306 °C, 356 °C, and 402 °C, respectively. The mechanism of the cerium doping effect for boosting soot oxidation is proposed: The doping of Ce ions can increase the surface oxygen species, which is the main active species for promoting the key step of NO oxidation to NO2 in catalyzing soot oxidation. This research provides a new strategy to develop high-efficient non-noble metal catalysts for soot oxidation in pollution control and sustainable environmental practices.

High-resolution air temperature data is indispensable for analysing heatwave-related non-accidental mortality. However, the limited number of weather stations in urban areas makes obtaining such data challenging. Multi-source data fusion has been proposed as a countermeasure to tackle such challenges. Satellite products often offered high spatial resolution but suffered from being temporally discontinuous due to weather conditions. The characteristics of the data from reanalysis models were the opposite. However, few studies have explored the fusion of these datasets. This study is the first attempt to integrate satellite and reanalysis datasets by developing a two-step downscaling model to generate hourly air temperature data during heatwaves in London at 1 km resolution. Specifically, MODIS land surface temperature (LST) and other satellite-based local variables, including normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), modified normalised difference water index (MNDWI), elevation, surface emissivity, and ERA5-Land hourly air temperature were used. The model employed genetic programming (GP) algorithm to fuse multi-source data and generate statistical models and evaluated using ground measurements from six weather stations. The results showed that our model achieved promising performance with the RMSE of 0.335 °C, R-squared of 0.949, MAE of 1.115 °C, and NSE of 0.924. Elevation was indicated to be the most effective explanatory variable. The developed model provided continuous, hourly 1 km estimations and accurately described the temporal and spatial patterns of air temperature in London. Furthermore, it effectively captured the temporal variation of air temperature in urban areas during heatwaves, providing valuable insights for assessing the impact on human health.

Catchment Morphing (CM) is a newly proposed approach to apply fully distributed models for ungauged catchments and has been trialled in several catchments in the UK. As one of the most important input datasets for hydrological models, rainfall spatial variability is influential on the stream variabilities and simulation performance. A homogenous rainfall was utilized in the previous experiments with Catchment Morphing. This study applied a spatially distributed rainfall from CEH-GEAR rainfall dataset in the morphed catchment for ungauged catchments as the follow-on study. Three catchments in the UK were used for rainfall spatial analysis and CEH-GEAR rainfall data were adopted for additional spatial analysis. The results demonstrate the influence of rainfall spatial information to the model performance with CM and illustrate the ability of morphed catchment to deal with spatially varied information. More spatially distributed information is expected to be introduced for a wider application of CM. We explore post-processing methods that can reduce biases in simulated flow in a hydrological model (HYMOD). Here, three bias-correction methods are compared using a set of calibrated parameters as a baseline (Cases 1 and 5). The proposed bias-correction methods are based on a flow duration curve (Case 2), an autoregressive model based on residuals obtained from simulated flows (Case 3), and a rating curve (Case 4). A clear seasonality representing a more substantial variability in winter than summer was evident in all cases. The extended range of residuals was usually observed in winter, indicating that the HYMOD may not reproduce high flows appropriately. This study confirmed that bias-corrected flows are more effective than the baseline model in terms of correcting a systematic error in the simulated flow. Moreover, a comparison of root mean square error over different flow regimes demonstrates that Case 3 is the most effective at correcting systematic biases over the entire flow regime. Finally, monthly water balances for all cases are evaluated and compared during both calibration and validation periods. The water balance in Case 3 is also closer to the observed values. The effects of different post-processing approaches on the performance of bias-correction are examined and discussed. BackgroundPediatric burns of all the ages are prevalent worldwide, posing a severe health risk to children. This study aims to examine pediatric burns' clinical characteristics and epidemiology in central China.MethodsThe pediatric patients of the Burn Research Center, Department of the First People's Hospital of Zhengzhou City from 2013 to 2019 were retrospectively studied and the relevant data were collected from the hospitalized medical records [e.g., demographic, etiology, length of stay (LOS), age, gender, burn area and depth, number of surgeries, cost, and outcome].ResultsA total of 5,569 pediatric burn patients were included, accounting for 43.9% of the total burn population. Electric burns represented a relatively small proportion (1.17%) but were more likely to lead to disabilities or death than scalds (90.63%) and flames (5.12%). The median age was 2 years [interquartile range (IQR): 1–4] and the boys/girls ratio ranged from 1.3:1 to 1.6:1. The most commonly burnt anatomic sites were the limbs (38.3%), with a median %TBSA (total body surface area) of 6 (IQR: 4–10). The complications of shock and pneumonia accounted for 7.6 and 19.2%, respectively. The peak months of pediatric burns included January, May, and August and the rural/urban ratio reached 1.61:1. The percentage of burn wounds treated surgically increased considerably from 2013 to 2019 (3.8 vs. 37.8%). The median hospital LOS was 15 days (IQR: 8–28 days), with the three high-risk factors (e.g., more surgeries, more %TBSA, full-thickness skin burns). The median cost of hospitalization was 1,511 USD (IQR: 848–2,648 USD) and the main risk factors consisted of full-thickness burns, more %TBSA, longer LOS, and more surgical procedures. Among all the patients, LA50 was 78.63% (95% CI = 75.12–83.45) and the overall mortality reached 0.1% since seven deaths were recorded.ConclusionScalds, flames, contact, and chemicals are the main causes of burns among children aged 1–5 years in central China. Accordingly, various prevention strategies should be employed depending upon the cause of the burn.

Ischiofemoral impingement (IFI) syndrome is considered the narrowing of the ischiofemoral space (IFS), leading to pathological changes in the quadratus femoris and sciatic nerve, causing posterior hip and sciatica-like pain. Open or arthroscopic resection of the lesser trochanter to enlarge the IFS is the main surgical procedure. However, there is a lack of research on isolated IFI, and currently known surgical procedures are at risk of weakening the flexion strength of the hip joint. In this study, four patients, who were diagnosed with isolated IFI and had undergone arthroscopic treatment with partial resection of the lesser trochanter, debridement of the quadratus femoris, and decompression of the sciatic nerve, were reviewed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to describe the management of IFI using a series of surgical procedures via a posterior approach as an effective treatment option. The outcomes of this study broadened the strategies for IFI management.

Mammalian cell membranes are decorated by the glycocalyx, which offer versatile means of generating biochemical signals. By manipulating the set of glycans displayed on cell surface, it is vital for gaining insight into the cellular behavior modulation and medical and biotechnological adhibition. Although genetic engineering is proven to be an effective approach for cell surface modification, the technique is only suitable for natural and genetically encoded molecules. To circumvent these limitations, non-genetic approaches are developed for modifying cell surfaces with unnatural but functional groups. Here, we review latest development of metabolic glycoengineering (MGE), which enriches the chemical functions of the cell surface and is becoming an intriguing new tool for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Particular emphasis of this review is placed on discussing current applications and perspectives of MGE.

Objectives: To explore the indications and surgical techniques for arthroscopic lower trapezius transfer (LTT) with tendon autograft in managing massive irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears (PSRCTs); to validate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of this technique.Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled 23 patients with massive irreparable PSRCTs, admitted to and followed up by the Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang province between July 2020 and April 2021, and treated with ipsilateral LTT and ipsilateral hamstring tendon autograft. The control group consisted of 23 patients with massive RCTs receiving conventional repair procedures within the same frame. Follow-up data at the preoperative visit, and postoperative month 3 were collected to assess the active range of motion, Constant–Murley Score (CMS),American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form (ASES), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)shoulder score, visual analog scale (VAS)and the post-operative MRI results, all of which could provide a comprehensive postoperative early efficacy assessment.Results: Three months follow-up visits were completed for all patients, revealing improvements in all aspects compared to the preoperative state, with no complications, such as postoperative infection of surgical sites and nerve injuries of infection and nerve injury. The distribution of active shoulder range of motion of patients and function scores with two types of operation was as follow: angles of flexion and lifting (130.00° ± 31.55° vs. 90.78° ± 19.85°), abduction (123.26° ± 30.47°vs. 85.87° ± 18.74°), external rotation at side (101.74° ± 14.74° vs. 91.74° ± 11.92°), external rotation at 90° abduction (41.52° ± 21.97° vs. 24.57° ±12.60°), VAS (0.74± 0.81 vs. 1.87 ±0.87), CMS(56.3 ± 13.01 vs. 48.30 ± 8.38), UCLA shoulder score (24.04 ± 2.88 vs.20.96 ± 3.47), ASES (72.91 ± 9.99 vs.60.74 ± 8.84). Significantly better improvements were found in the study group on month 3.19 of 23 patients in the study group and 17 of 23 patients in the control group underwent MRI on the 3 months follow up. Retear was found in only one patient who had grade 4 subscapularis tendon injury, However, revision was not performed due to postoperative pain relief and functional improvement.Conclusion: Compared to conventional repair procedures, in the early postoperative period, LTT with tendon autograft could achieve better pain relief, more rapid motor functional recovery, and higher functional scores for massive irreparable PSRCTs.

Water quality monitoring is essential to understanding the complex dynamics of water ecosystems, the impact of human infrastructure on them and to ensure the safe use of water resources for drinking, recreation and transport. High frequency in-situ monitoring systems are being increasingly employed in water quality monitoring schemes due to their much finer temporal measurement scales possible and reduced cost associated with manual sampling, manpower and time needed to process results compared to traditional grab-sampling. Modelling water quality data at higher frequency reduces uncertainty and allows for the capture of transient events, although due to potential constraints of data storage, inducement of noise, and power conservation it is worthwhile not using an excessively high sampling frequency. In this study, high frequency data recorded in Bristol's Floating Harbour as part of the local UKRIC Urban Observatory activities is presented to analyse events not captured by the current manual sampling and laboratory analysis scheme. The frequency components of the time-series are analysed to work towards understanding the necessary sampling frequency of temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM), turbidity and conductivity as indicators of water quality. This study is the first of its kind to explore a statistical approach for determining the optimum sampling frequency for different water quality parameters using a high frequency dataset. Furthermore, it provides practical tools to understand how different sampling frequencies are representative of the water quality changes.

The hydrological response is changeable for catchments with hydro-meteorological variations, which is neglected by the traditional calibration approach through using time-invariant parameters. This study aims to reproduce the variation of hydrological responses by allowing parameters to vary over clusters with hydro-meteorological similarities. The Fuzzy C-means algorithm is used to partition one-month periods into temperature-based and rainfall-based clusters. One-month periods are also classified based on seasons and random numbers for comparison. This study is carried out in three catchments in the UK, using the IHACRES rainfall-runoff model. Results show when using time-varying parameters to account for the variation of hydrological processes, it is important to identify the key factors that cause the change of hydrological responses, and the selection of the time-varying parameters should correspond to the identified key factors. In the study sites, temperature plays a more important role in controlling the change of hydrological responses than rainfall. It is found that the number of clusters has an effect on model performance, model performances for calibration period become better with the increase of cluster number; however, the increase of model complexity leads to poor predictive capabilities due to overfitting. It is important to select the appropriate number of clusters to achieve a balance between model complexity and model performance.

River salinisation and alkalinisation have become one of the major environmental problems threatening the safety of global freshwater resources. With the accelerated climate change and aggravating anthropogenic influences, it is important to identify the trends and causes of river salinisation and alkalinisation so that better mitigation measures could be taken. This study has focused on the UK rivers because there has been insufficient investigation on this topic. To understand the salinisation and alkalinisation trends and causes of rivers in the UK over the past 20 years from a vertical (analysis of each river) and horizontal (comparison of all rivers) perspective, this study uses the Theil-Sen regression and Mann-Kendall test to deal with the trends of conductivity (proxy on salinisation) and pH (proxy on alkalinisation), obtains outliers of conductivity and pH by boxplot, and calculates the Pearson’s and the Kendall’s Tau correlation coefficients (α = 0.05) between the water quality data and the potential factors (potential road salting, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), river discharge, agricultural and urban lands). The results show that the UK rivers are becoming more alkaline with a median pH increase of 0.05 to 0.40, but less salty with a median conductivity decrease of 0.06 to 0.11 mS/cm. And the changes in conductivity and pH have seasonality and regionality, which shows that there are usually greater changes in trends and medians of them in winter or through reaches with more anthropogenic disturbance. Furthermore, from a vertical perspective, the conductivity of more than 50% of rivers in this study is negatively correlated with NDVI and river discharge, and positively correlated with potential road salting, and the pH of that is positively correlated with agricultural lands. While from a horizontal perspective, NDVI and agricultural lands are positively correlated with pH, and potential road salting and urban lands are positively correlated with conductivity. Therefore, road salting, urbanisation, agricultural lands, river discharge and vegetation cover can be considered to affect river salinisation and alkalinisation in the UK.

After a long-standing debate of pluralism in heritage conservation, the global practice has just started to broaden its view from material to people and even to nature, leading to the potential of a more comprehensive understanding and harmony between these spheres. Notwithstanding that the shift from material to people and then to nature seemingly looks like the only path in the modern heritage conservation movement to achieve the foregoing goals, in fact, there exist some regional cultures that originally featured particular views on human−nature harmony. This paper hence highlights the regional difference in heritage with a focus on China of ancient times, which unfolds the particular perspective emphasising the unity of human and nature. With a case study of Huaqing Palace of the Tang Dynasty (618−907 CE), the research is expected to be the first attempt to rediscover that the four schools of thought, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and I Ching, had jointly formed a “wisdom” system of the ancient Han Chinese in shaping the idea of cultural heritage, as well as the idea of heritage conservation, which were inherited by modern Chinese without knowing and recognising it. The paper, therefore, argues that without understanding and acknowledging the significance of the ancient Han Chinese’s particular view on nature and the universe formed by the four schools of thought behind the material, it is not likely to protect and promote comprehensively their heritage value, such that the importance of cultural diversity will be just rhetoric.

Background: During a migraine attack, trigeminal activation results in the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which stimulates the release of inflammatory cytokines playing an important role in migraine. Objective: We analyze the relation between CGRP and cytokines during attacks to explore the possible mechanism of migraine. Materials and Methods: Migraine patients and healthy control were recruited at the Department of Neurology, the Sixth People's Hospital of Fuyang City, between March 2018 and July 2018. The protein levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and CGRP were determined from the sera of patients with migraine and control subjects by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was also determined to calculate the correlation between CGRP and inflammatory factors levels. Results: The level of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and CGRP in migraine group were significantly higher than normal group (P < 0.05). The level of CGRP was significantly correlated with IL-1 β (r = 0.30, P < 0.05) and IL-6 (r = 0.94, P < 0.05), but not significantly correlated with IL-2 (r =−0.047, P = 0.75), IL-10 (r = 0.12, P = 0.43), and TNF-α (r = 0.05, P = 0.72). Conclusions: In our study, we found migraine patients had a higher IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF level than healthy controls and the level of CGRP was related significantly with the level of IL-1β and IL-6. In conclusion, our results suggest that IL-1β and IL-6 may be involved in the pathogenesis of migraine attacks and CGRP related with the secretion of cytokines.

Precipitation, as a primary hydrological variable in the water cycle plays an important role in hydrological modeling. The reliability of hydrological modeling is highly related to the quality of precipitation data. Accurate long-term gauged precipitation in the Mekong River Basin, however, is limited. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to assess the performances of various gridded precipitation datasets in rainfall-runoff and flood-inundation modeling of the whole basin. Firstly, the performance of the Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model in this basin was evaluated using the gauged rainfall. The calibration (2000-2003) and validation (2004-2007) results indicated that the RRI model had acceptable performance in the Mekong River Basin. In addition, five gridded precipitation datasets including APHRODITE, GPCC, PERSIANN-CDR, GSMaP (RNL), and TRMM (3B42V7) from 2000 to 2007 were applied as the input to the calibrated model. The results of the simulated river discharge indicated that TRMM, GPCC, and APHRODITE performed better than other datasets. The statistical index of the annual maximum inundated area indicated similar conclusions. Thus, APHRODITE, TRMM, and GPCC precipitation datasets were considered suitable for rainfall-runoff and flood inundation modeling in the Mekong River Basin. This study provides useful guidance for the application of gridded precipitation in hydrological modeling in the Mekong River basin.

The Nile Delta has been suffering from complex environmental hazards caused by climate change and human-induced evolvements, which have led to adverse impacts on national food security. An unfavourable nexus between solid waste management issues and extreme hydrological events is examined mainly through extensive field investigation and literature research, which is an emerging issue affecting food safety and security whilst still being overlooked so far. The findings not only reveal the significance of the emerging issue but also support our proposed recommendations in the policy/legislation and technology sphere. This interdisciplinary research employs a holistic lens that covers diverse perspectives, including systemic problems, wastewater treatment, and environmental neuroscience, to explore the relationship between food, climate change, water management, and waste pollution, and to achieve novel discoveries for the practical adaptations of Egypt’s challenges.

Nonstationarity is one major issue in hydrological models, especially in design rainfall analysis. Design rainfalls are typically estimated by annual maximum rainfalls (AMRs) of observations below 50 years in many parts of the world, including South Korea. However, due to the lack of data, the time-dependent nature may not be sufficiently identified by this classic approach. Here, this study aims to explore design rainfall with nonstationary condition using century-long reanalysis products that help one to go back to the early 20th century. Despite its useful representation of the past climate, the reanalysis products via observational data assimilation schemes and models have never been tested in representing the nonstationary behavior in extreme rainfall events. We used daily precipitations of two century-long reanalysis datasets as the ERA-20c by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the 20th century reanalysis (20CR) by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The AMRs from 1900 to 2010 were derived from the grids over South Korea. The systematic errors were downgraded through quantile delta mapping (QDM), as well as conventional stationary quantile mapping (SQM). The evaluation result of the bias-corrected AMRs indicated the significant reduction of the errors. Furthermore, the AMRs present obvious increasing trends from 1900 to 2010. With the bias-corrected values, we carried out nonstationary frequency analysis based on the time-varying location parameters of generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution. Design rainfalls with certain return periods were estimated based on the expected number of exceedance (ENE) interpretation. Although there is a significant range of uncertainty, the design quantiles by the median parameters showed the significant relative difference, from −30.8% to 42.8% for QDM, compared with the quantiles by the multi-decadal observations. Even though the AMRs from the reanalysis products are challenged by various errors such as quantile mapping (QM) and systematic errors, the results from the current study imply that the proposed scheme with employing the reanalysis product might be beneficial to predict the future evolution of extreme precipitation and to estimate the design rainfall accordingly.

Understanding catchment response to rainfall events is important for accurate runoff estimation in many water-related applications, including water resources management. This study introduced a hybrid model, the Tank-least squared support vector machine (LSSVM), that incorporated intermediate state variables from a conceptual tank model within the least squared support vector machine (LSSVM) framework in order to describe aspects of the rainfall-runoff (RR) process. The efficacy of the Tank-LSSVM model was demonstrated with hydro-meteorological data measured in the Yongdam Catchment between 2007 and 2016, South Korea. We first explored the role of satellite soil moisture (SM) data (i.e., European Space Agency (ESA) CCI) in the rainfall-runoff modeling. The results indicated that the SM states inferred from the ESA CCISWI provided an effective means of describing the temporal dynamics of SM. Further, the Tank-LSSVM model’s ability to simulate daily runoff was assessed by using goodness of fit measures (i.e., root mean square error, Nash Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE), and coefficient of determination). The Tank-LSSVM models’ NSE were all classified as “very good” based on their performance during the training and testing periods. Compared to individual LSSVM and Tank models, improved daily runoff simulations were seen in the proposed Tank-LSSVM model. In particular, low flow simulations demonstrated the improvement of the Tank-LSSVM model compared to the conventional tank model.

Accurate soil moisture information is very important for real-time flood forecasting. Although satellite soil moisture observations are useful information, their validations are generally hindered by the large spatial difference with the point-based measurements, and hence they cannot be directly applied in hydrological modelling. This study adopts a widely applied operational hydrological model Xinanjiang (XAJ) as a hydrological validation tool. Two widely used microwave sensors (SMOS and AMSR-E) are evaluated, over two basins (French Broad and Pontiac) with different climate types and vegetation covers. The results demonstrate SMOS outperforms AMSR-E in the Pontiac basin (cropland), while both products perform poorly in the French Broad basin (forest). The MODIS NDVI thresholds of 0.81 and 0.64 (for cropland and forest basins, resp.) are very effective in dividing soil moisture datasets into “denser” and “thinner” vegetation periods. As a result, in the cropland, the statistical performance is further improved for both satellites (i.e., improved to NSE = 0.74, RMSE = 0.0059 m and NSE = 0.58, RMSE = 0.0066 m for SMOS and AMER-E, resp.). The overall assessment suggests that SMOS is of reasonable quality in estimating basin-scale soil moisture at moderate-vegetated areas, and NDVI is a useful indicator for further improving the performance.

Attributing runoff change to different drivers is vital in order to better understand how and why runoff varies, and to further support decision makers on water resources planning and management. Most previous works attributed runoff change in the arid or semi-arid areas to climate variability and human activity on an annual scale. However, attribution results may differ greatly according to different climatic zones, decades, temporal scales, and different contributors. This study aims to quantitatively attribute runoff change in a humid subtropical basin (the Qingliu River basin, East China) to climate variability, land-use change, and human activity on multiple scales over different periods by using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The results show that runoff increased during 1960⁻2012 with an abrupt change occurring in 1984. Annual runoff in the post-change period (1985⁻2012) increased by 16.05% (38.05 mm) relative to the pre-change period (1960⁻1984), most of which occurred in the winter and early spring (March). On the annual scale, climate variability, human activity, and land-use change (mainly for forest cover decrease) contributed 95.36%, 4.64%, and 12.23% to runoff increase during 1985⁻2012, respectively. On the seasonal scale, human activity dominated runoff change (accounting for 72.11%) in the dry season during 1985⁻2012, while climate variability contributed the most to runoff change in the wet season. On the monthly scale, human activity was the dominant contributor to runoff variation in all of the months except for January, May, July, and August during 1985⁻2012. Impacts of climate variability and human activity on runoff during 2001⁻2012 both became stronger than those during 1985⁻2000, but counteracted each other. The findings should help understandings of runoff behavior in the Qingliu River and provide scientific support for local water resources management.

Multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods have shown advantages in supporting decision-making with problems that confront conflicting objectives. However, current applications to complex environmental problems featuring the dynamic social sphere, particularly problems involving cultural heritage and nature, have yet to substantially reflect this. The dynamic social sphere reflects the demand for scenario forecasting in decision-making support. This knowledge gap has not been addressed sufficiently in MCDA research. A participatory MCDA method is hence proposed as a merger with Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) as the scenario forecasting. The MCDA is then carried out to tackle a complex environmental problem caused by traditional food production in a historic town, Daxi in Taiwan. The result reveals a remarkable willingness to support this issue of a historically significant industry causing detriment to environment (with WTP estimate of 128,700,000 USD from the public) and suggests a plan that applies multiple policy instruments rather than following a potentially adverse polluter-pays principle. This manifests the authors’ argument that recognition of heritage significance has dramatically affected selection of policy instruments and provides a critical recommendation to the local government which has struggled to find solutions. The proposed MCDA also highlights its participatory aspect for addressing issues involving cultural heritage, supported by several key steps, in particular the intervention-impact value tree building, the scenario forecasting and the sensitivity analysis.

Highly dispersed CuFe19Ox catalysts with different shapes were prepared and further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and in-situ XRD. XRD and TEM results showed that the synthesized CuFe19Ox nanoparticles consisted of CuO and Fe2O3, while CuFe19Ox nanorods consisted of CuFe2O4 and Fe2O3. The reduction properties of CuFe19Ox samples were finely studied by H2-TPR, and the phase composition was identified by in-situ XPS, HR-TEM, and surface TPR (s-TPR). In-situ X-ray photoelectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the metallic Cu and Fe3O4 were the main species after reduction. Moreover, s-TPR studies showed that the reduction performance of copper was significantly affected by the shapes of the Fe3O4 supports. Low-temperature water gas shift (LT-WGS) was chosen to characterize the Cu species on the surface. It was found that reduced CuFe19Ox nanorods had no activity. On the contrary, reduced CuFe19Ox particles showed higher initial WGS activity, where the active Cu0 should originate from the reduction of Cu2O at lower temperatures, as confirmed by the s-TPR profiles.

Understanding and improving public flood risk perception is conducive to the implementation of effective flood risk management and disaster reduction policies. In the flood-prone city of Jingdezhen, flood disaster is one of the most destructive natural hazards to impact the society and economy. However, few studies have been attempted to focus on public flood risk perception in the small and medium-size city in China, like Jingdezhen. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the public flood risk perception in four districts of Jingdezhen and examine the related influencing factors. A questionnaire survey of 719 randomly sampled respondents was conducted in 16 subdistricts of Jingdezhen. Analysis of variance was conducted to identify the correlations between the impact factors and public flood risk perception. Then, the flood risk perception differences between different groups under the same impact factor were compared. The results indicated that the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents (except occupation), flood experience, flood knowledge education, flood protection responsibility, and trust in government were strongly correlated with flood risk perception. The findings will help decision makers to develop effective flood risk communication strategies and flood risk reduction policies.

Rod-shaped Cu1Fe9Ox precursor was successfully prepared through an aqueous precipitation method. The shape and phase composition were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that Cu1Fe9Ox is composed of CuFe2O4 and Fe2O3. The reduction performance of Cu1Fe9Ox was studied by in situ XRD and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR). Cu/Fe3O4 nanorod catalyst is obtained through the controllable reduction of Cu1Fe9Ox nanorod, and the formed Cu/Fe3O4 nanorod catalyst does not have low-temperature water gas shift (WGS) activity, but exhibits high-temperature WGS reaction activity. Ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) studies showed that the main species of copper is Cu+ during the WGS reaction. The interaction between Cu and Fe3O4 rod and phase evolution of Cu species are quite different from Cu/Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

For urban watersheds, the storm sewer network provides indispensable data for flood modeling but often needs to be simplified to balance the conflict between the large amount of data and current computing power. The sensitivity of a flood simulation to the data precision of a storm sewer network needs to be explored to develop reasonable generalization strategies. In this study, the impact of using the stroke scaling method to generalize a storm sewer network on a flood simulation was analyzed in terms of the total inflow of the outfalls and flood results. The results of the three study basins showed that different complexities of a sewer network did not have a significant effect on the outfall’s total inflow for an area with a single drainage system but did for an area with multiple drainage systems. In addition, serious flooding was mainly distributed at the backbone pipes, which can be identified with the simplified sewer network. Several effective generalization strategies were developed for sewer networks that consider the distribution characteristics of the drainage system and application requirements. This study is theoretically important for better understanding the data sensitivity of flood modeling and simulation and practically important for improving the modeling efficiency and the accuracy of urban flood simulation.

Biochar (BC) is increasingly applied in agriculture; however, due to its adsorption and degradation properties, biochar may also affect the efficacy of fumigant in amended soil. Our research is intended to study the effects of two types of biochars (BC-1 and BC-2) on the efficacy and emission of methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) in biochar amendment soil. Both types of biochars can significantly reduce MITC emission losses, but, at the same time, decrease the concentration of MITC in the soil. The efficacy of MITC for controlling soil-borne pests (Meloidogyne spp., Fusarium spp. Phytophthora spp., Abutilon theophrasti and Digitaria sanguinalis) was reduced when the biochar (BC-1 and BC-2) was applied at a rate of higher than 1% and 0.5% (on a weight basis) (on a weight basis), respectively. However, increased doses of dazomet (DZ) were able to offset decreases in the efficacy of MITC in soils amended with biochars. Biochars with strong adsorption capacity (such as BC-1) substantially reduced MITC degradation rate by 6.2 times, and increased by 4.1 times following amendment with biochar with high degradability (e.g., BC-2), compared to soil without biochar amendment. This is due to the adsorption and degradation of biochar that reduces MITC emission losses and pest control.
