Abstract

This book explores the meanings of Queer and Trans People of Colour (QTPOC) activist groups in the UK, considering the tensions around inclusion and belonging across lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) and of colour communities and wider British society. Davis draws de-/anti-/post-colonial, Black feminist, and queer theory into critical psychology to publish the first book of its kind in the UK, developing an intersectional understanding of QTPOC subjectivities and identities. The book examines questions of belonging; racial melancholia; decolonising gender and sexualities; and the joys, erotics, and the difficulties of building and finding QTPOC community that can hold and celebrate our intersectional richness. Offering a radical and critical intervention into psychology, this volume will be of key interest to scholars in Gender Studies and Queer Studies, Psychology and Race, together with activists, community organisers, counsellors, and the third sector.

Abstract

Integrating primary care with the health response is key to managing pandemics and other health emergencies. In recognition of this, the Australian Government established a network of respiratory clinics led by general practitioners in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic as part of broader measures aimed at supporting primary care. General practitioner (GP) respiratory clinics provide holistic face-to-face assessment and treatment to those with respiratory symptoms in an environment with strict protocols for infection prevention and control. This ensures that these patients are able to access high quality primary care while protecting the general practice workforce and other patients. The GP respiratory clinic model was developed and operationalized 10 days after the policy was announced, with the first 2 respiratory clinics opening on March 21, 2020. Subsequently a total of 150 respiratory clinics were opened and served over 800,000 patients within more than 99% of Australia's postcodes. These clinics used a standardized data collection tool that has provided the largest and most complete primary care surveillance database of respiratory illness in Australia. The success of the GP respiratory clinic model was made possible due to strong partnerships with Primary Health Networks and individual general practices that rapidly shifted operations to embrace this new approach. 42. Investigating how different motives for goal pursuit predicts rumination about those goals using a diary design

Background: Motivational theories suggest that goals that are more internalised are associated with increased progress and well-being and that when goals are less internalised less progress is made. Rumination can occur as a result of unresolved goals and the nature of the goals that people set may be a factor in the degree to which they ruminate. Rumination has been associated with ill-being when it in unconstructive. Objective: The purpose of this study was to test whether different motives for goal pursuit predict unique variance in rumination, after accounting for other possible variables (goal importance, goal expectancy, goal conflict and goal facilitation) that may explain that relationship. Further investigation aimed to identify whether rumination about goals is perceived to be constructive, whether intrinsic and identified motives predict higher levels of goal progress and whether introjected motives and goal conflict each contribute significant variance in perceived constructiveness of rumination. Methods: This is a correlational diary study investigating goal rumination, constructiveness of goal rumination and goal progress on a daily basis. Forty-eight participants took part in the study (83.3% female [n=48]; age, M = 18.93 years, range = 18-43, SD = 7.72). Participants completed initial self-report measures on personal goals (Emmons, 1986), goal motivation (Ryan & Connell, 1989), goal importance and expectancy (Emmons, 1986), goal conflict and facilitation using unipolar scales (Riediger & Freund, 2004). They were then asked to complete a ten-day diary phase relating to their 6 most important goals. This included reporting on rumination (Schultheiss, Jones, Davis, & Kley, 2008), constructiveness of rumination and goal progress (Moberly & Dickson, 2016). Results: Support was found at the within-person level for introjected motives for goal pursuit being associated with higher levels of goal rumination and participants reported higher levels of rumination about goals that conflicted with other goals, both predicted unique variance. Introjected motives for goal pursuits were associated with higher levels of perceived constructiveness of rumination at the within-person level but not at the between-person level. Intrinsic and identified motives were not found to be associated with high levels of goal progress. Conclusion: This study was able to advance methodologically on previous studies finding that people ruminate more about goals pursued for introjected motives. Findings suggest introjected motives are associated with rumination and that this is not because of correlations with other variables such as conflict. This is support for the organismic integration understanding of rumination.

43. Redefining “expansion” in congressional communication: Homestyles for a digital constituency.

Abstract

Self‐presentation in Congress is more nationalized, with digital constituencies on platforms such as Twitter offering new reputation‐building opportunities. Digital constituencies transform traditional expectations of constituent communication, challenging Richard Fenno's theory that representatives adopt an “expansionist” style with constituents during early, vulnerable phases of their tenure. In a digital era that encourages a more national approach, we question how Fenno's distinction between expansionist and protectionist phases of connecting with constituents applies to reputation‐building with digital constituencies. While electorally vulnerable senators still seek to expand their presentation among geographic constituents, digital platforms, such as Twitter, incentivize them to protect their reputation among a digital constituency. We analyzed senators' Twitter communications from 2013 to 2023. We find the electoral vulnerabilities of Fenno's expansionist local model are associated with a protectionist model of engagement with digital constituencies on Twitter. Our study sheds light on the significance of online reputation management and its implications for representing a media‐influenced, modern Congress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

RationaleThe relationship between respiratory function at hospital discharge and the severity of later respiratory disease in extremely low gestational age neonates is not well defined.ObjectivesTo test the hypothesis that tidal breathing measurements near the time of hospital discharge differ between extremely premature infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) or respiratory disease in the first year of life and those without these conditions.MethodsStudy subjects were part of the PROP (Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program) study, a longitudinal cohort study of infants born at less than 29 gestational weeks followed from birth to 1 year of age. Respiratory inductance plethysmography was used for tidal breathing measurements before and after inhaled albuterol 1 week before anticipated hospital discharge. Infants were breathing spontaneously and were receiving less than or equal to 1 L/min nasal cannula flow at 21% to 100% fraction of inspired oxygen. A survey of respiratory morbidity was administered to caregivers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months corrected age to assess for respiratory disease. We compared tidal breathing measurements in infants with and without BPD (oxygen requirement at 36 wk) and with and without respiratory disease in the first year of life. Measurements were also performed in a comparison cohort of term infants.ResultsA total of 765 infants survived to 36 weeks postmenstrual age, with research-quality tidal breathing data in 452 out of 564 tested (80.1%). Among these 452 infants, the rate of postdischarge respiratory disease was 65.7%. Compared with a group of 18 term infants, PROP infants had abnormal tidal breathing patterns. However, there were no clinically significant differences in tidal breathing measurements in PROP infants who had BPD or who had respiratory disease in the first year of life compared with those without these diagnoses. Bronchodilator response was not significantly associated with respiratory disease in the first year of life.ConclusionsExtremely premature infants receiving less than 1 L/min nasal cannula support at 21% to 100% fraction of inspired oxygen have tidal breathing measurements that differ from term infants, but these measurements do not differentiate those preterm infants who have BPD or will have respiratory disease in the first year of life from those who do not. Abstract

This book explores the meanings of Queer and Trans People of Colour (QTPOC) activist groups in the UK, considering the tensions around inclusion and belonging across lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) and of colour communities and wider British society.Davis draws de-/anti-/post-colonial, Black feminist, and queer theory into critical psychology to publish the first book of its kind in the UK, developing an intersectional understanding of QTPOC subjectivities and identities. The book examines questions of belonging; racial melancholia; decolonising gender and sexualities; and the joys, erotics, and the difficulties of building and finding QTPOC community that can hold and celebrate our intersectional richness. Offering a radical and critical intervention into psychology, this volume will be of key interest to scholars in Gender Studies and Queer Studies, Psychology and Race, together with activists, community organisers, counsellors, and the third sector.
