2. Disciplinary Literacy: Virginia School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists' Knowledge and Confidence

Abstract

The purpose of this survey was to examine Speech-Language Pathologists' (SLPs) confidence in their ability to support student outcomes by addressing language-literacy needs, to align therapy to educational standards, and to align therapy to student content areas. A total of 237 school-based SLPs in Virginia completed a 19-item survey. Results indicated school-based SLPs were largely unfamiliar with the concept of disciplinary literacy and only 53% of the respondents indicated that they were "Very confident" or "Somewhat confident" in their ability to align their therapy to students' content areas. Confidence level was found to be negatively correlated with SLPs' experience level (rs = -0.14 - -0.24, p < 0.05) and positively correlated with their rating of their education (rs = 0.28-0.39, p < 0.01). These results suggest school-based SLPs could benefit from professional development in the area of disciplinary literacy as well as the broader area of adolescent language and literacy interventions.

Abstract

Quality in the trucking industry involves several facets, including on-time performance and safety. In the largest naturalistic driving study to-date, with 496 drivers and 13 M miles driven, we address two safety questions: (a) does the occurrence of safety critical events increase during a driving shift? and (b) what is the effect of rest breaks on the incidence of those events? To address these two questions, we adopt point process models, commonly used to assess the reliability of repairable systems, to model the occurrence/likelihood of safety critical events. To account for driver differences, driver-level random effects were also assumed. Our results show that: (a) the intensity for hard brakes decreases throughout a shift, (b) rest breaks reduce the likelihood of activation of the automated collision mitigation system, and (c) there is a fair amount of variability among drivers. Given that a hard brake (a less severe safety critical event) is more common in the beginning of the shift, it can potentially be explained by an increased likelihood of being in a local/city road and/or increased likelihood of aggressive driving behavior early in a driver's shift. Furthermore, we quantified the impact of rest breaks in reducing engagement of the more severe automated collision mitigation system, providing data-driven evidence on the importance of rest-break scheduling for trucking safety. Abstract

Since the first version of the Entity–Relationship (ER) model proposed by Peter Chen over forty years ago, both the ER model and conceptual modeling activities have been key success factors for modeling computer-based systems. During the last decade, conceptual modeling has been recognized as an important research topic in academia, as well as a necessity for practitioners. However, there are many research challenges for conceptual modeling in contemporary applications such as Big Data, data-intensive applications, decision support systems, e-health applications, and ontologies. In addition, there remain challenges related to the traditional efforts associated with methodologies, tools, and theory development. Recently, novel research is uniting contributions from both the conceptual modeling area and the Artificial Intelligence discipline in two directions. The first one is efforts related to how conceptual modeling can aid in the design of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. The second one is how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can be applied in model-based solutions, such as model-based engineering, to infer and improve the generated models. For the first time in the history of Conceptual Modeling (ER) conferences, we encouraged the submission of papers based on AI and ML solutions in an attempt to highlight research from both communities. In this paper, we present some of important topics in current research in conceptual modeling. We introduce the selected best papers from the 37th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER’18) held in Xi’an, China and summarize some of the valuable contributions made based on the discussions of these papers. We conclude with suggestions for continued research.

Abstract

The last decade has witnessed an increasing transformation in the design, engineering, and mining of processes, moving from a pure control-flow perspective to more integrated models where also data and decisions are explicitly considered. This calls for methods and techniques able to ascertain the correctness of such integrated models. Differently from previous approaches, which mainly focused on the local interplay between decisions and their corresponding outgoing branches, we introduce a holistic approach to verify the end-to-end soundness of a Petri net-based process model, enriched with case data and decisions. In addition, we present an effective, implemented technique that verifies soundness by translating the input net into a colored Petri net with bounded color sets, on which standard state space analysis techniques are subsequently applied. Experiments on real life illustrate the relevance and applicability in real settings.

Abstract

Process discovery algorithms address the problem of learning process models from event logs. Typically, in such settings a user’s activity is limited to configuring the parameters of the discovery algorithm, and hence the user expertise/domain knowledge can not be incorporated during traditional process discovery. In a setting where the event logs are noisy, incomplete and/or contain uninteresting activities, the process models discovered by discovery algorithms are often inaccurate and/or incomprehensible. Furthermore, many of these automated techniques can produce unsound models and/or cannot discover duplicate activities, silent activities etc. To overcome such shortcomings, we introduce a new concept to interactively discover a process model, by combining a user’s domain knowledge with the information from the event log. The discovered models are always sound and can have duplicate activities, silent activities etc. An objective evaluation and a case study shows that the proposed approach can outperform traditional discovery techniques.

39. Creating Guided Study Exercises for a Flipped Database Course.

Abstract

There is a preponderance of evidence that active learning is a successful way to engage students and increase achievement of learning outcomes, however, there are many challenges associated with implementing active learning. One concern is that it takes too much class time and not enough material can be covered during the term if lecture time is sacrificed to in-class activities. To address this, many instructors have turned to flipping their classes, that is, having students devote their solo study time to preparing for class, while group time is devoted to active learning. The individual student preparation can be accomplished through watching video lectures or reading a text, for example. But the big question here is: will students actually follow through and do the preparation? The focus of this paper is on experiences flipping an introductory database class. In particular, what are the best practices for holding students accountable for preparing for class? The author has employed online reading quizzes as well as guided study assignments.
