The Snowmass report on rare processes and precision measurements recommended Mu2e-II and a next generation muon facility at Fermilab (Advanced Muon Facility) as priorities for the frontier. The Workshop on a future muon program at FNAL was held in March 2023 to discuss design studies for Mu2e-II, organizing efforts for the next generation muon facility, and identify synergies with other efforts (e.g., muon collider). Topics included high-power targetry, status of R&D for Mu2e-II, development of compressor rings, FFA and concepts for muon experiments (conversion, decays, muonium and other opportunities) at AMF. With the rise of Deep Learning (DL), our world braces for AI in every edge device, creating an urgent need for edge-AI SoCs. This SoC hardware needs to support high throughput, reliable and secure AI processing at Ultra Low Power (ULP), with a very short time to market. With its strong legacy in edge solutions and open processing platforms, the EU is well-positioned to become a leader in this SoC market. However, this requires AI edge processing to become at least 100 times more energy-efficient, while offering sufficient flexibility and scalability to deal with AI as a fast-moving target. Since the design space of these complex SoCs is huge, advanced tooling is needed to make their design tractable. The CONVOLVE project (currently in Inital stage) addresses these roadblocks. It takes a holistic approach with innovations at all levels of the design hierarchy. Starting with an overview of SOTA DL processing support and our project methodology, this paper presents 8 important design choices largely impacting the energy efficiency and flexibility of DL hardware. Finding good solutions is key to making smart-edge computing a reality.

In April 2021, scientists active in muon physics met to discuss and work out the physics case for the new High-Intensity Muon Beams (HIMB) project at PSI that could deliver of order $10^{10}$\,s$^{-1}$ surface muons to experiments. Ideas and concrete proposals were further substantiated over the following months and assembled in the present document. The high intensities will allow for completely new experiments with considerable discovery potential and unique sensitivities. The physics case is outstanding and extremely rich, ranging from fundamental particle physics via chemistry to condensed matter research and applications in energy research and elemental analysis. In all these fields, HIMB will ensure that the facilities S$\mu$S and CHRISP on PSI's High Intensity Proton Accelerator complex HIPA remain world-leading, despite the competition of muon facilities elsewhere., Comment: 116 pages, 42 figures

This note presents an analysis of lepton-flavour-violating muon decays within the framework of a low-energy effective field theory that contains higher-dimensional operators allowed by QED and QCD symmetries. The decay modes $\mu\to e \gamma$ and $\mu\to 3e$ are investigated below the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale, down to energies at which such processes occur, i.e. the muon mass scale. The complete class of dimension-5 and dimension-6 operators is studied systematically at the tree level, and one-loop contributions to the renormalisation group equations are fully taken into account. Current experimental limits are used to extract bounds on the Wilson coefficients of some of the operators and, ultimately, on the effective couplings at any energy level below the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale. Correlations between two couplings relevant to both processes illustrate the complementarity of searches planned for the MEG II and Mu3e experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

The two Higgs doublet model emerges as a minimal scenario in which to address, at the same time, the $\gamma\gamma$ excess at 750 GeV and the lepton flavour violating decay into $\tau^\pm \mu^\mp $ of the 125 GeV Higgs boson. The price to pay is additional matter to enhance the $\gamma\gamma$ rate, and a peculiar pattern for the lepton Yukawa couplings. The feasibility of a next generation neutrino observatory in Europe is being considered within the LAGUNA design study. To accommodate giant neutrino detectors and shield them from cosmic rays, a new very large underground infrastructure is required. Seven potential candidate sites in different parts of Europe and at several distances from CERN are being studied: Boulby (UK), Canfranc (Spain), Fr\'ejus (France/Italy), Pyh\"asalmi (Finland), Polkowice-Sieroszowice (Poland), Slanic (Romania) and Umbria (Italy). Experiments are planned to improve the sensitivity of mu-e conversion from the current ~ 10^{-12} to 10^{-16} - 10^{-18}. If the muon (bound to the nucleus) could be polarised, a spin asymmetry of the final state electron is sensitive to CP violating phases on lepton flavour violating operators. This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We give analytic approximations to the baryon asymmetry produced by thermal leptogenesis with hierarchical right-handed neutrinos. Our calculation includes flavour-dependent washout processes and CP violation in scattering, and neglects gauge interactions and finite temperature corrections. Our approximate formulae depend upon the three CP asymmetries in the individual lepton flavours as well as on three flavour-dependent efficiency factors. We show that the commonly used expressions for the lepton asymmetry, which depend on the total CP asymmetry and one single efficiency factor, may fail to reproduce the correct lepton asymmetry in a number of cases. We illustrate the importance of using the flavour-dependent formulae in the context of a two right-handed neutrino model., Comment: Additional typos corrected (in particular, the plots and captions now agree)

We study the impact of flavour in thermal leptogenesis, including the quantum oscillations of the asymmetries in lepton flavour space. In the Boltzmann equations we find different numerical factors and additional terms which can affect the results significantly. The upper bound on the CP asymmetry in a specific flavour is weaker than the bound on the sum. This suggests that -- when flavour dynamics is included -- there is no model-independent limit on the light neutrino mass scale,and that the lower bound on the reheat temperature is relaxed by a factor ~ (3 - 10)., Comment: 19 pages, corrected equations for flavour oscillations

During 2004, four divisions of the American Physical Society commissioned a study of neutrino physics to take stock of where the field is at the moment and where it is going in the near and far future. Several working groups looked at various aspects of this vast field. The summary was published as a main report entitled ``The Neutrino Matrix'' accompanied by short 50 page versions of the report of each working group. Theoretical research in this field has been quite extensive and touches many areas and the short 50 page report provided only a brief summary and overview of few of the important points. The theory discussion group felt that it may be of value to the community to publish the entire study as a white paper and the result is the current article. After a brief overview of the present knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing and some popular ways to probe the new physics implied by recent data, the white paper summarizes what can be learned about physics beyond the Standard Model from the various proposed neutrino experiments. It also comments on the impact of the experiments on our understanding of the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe and the basic nature of neutrino interactions as well as the existence of possible additional neutrinos. We consider Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSI), described by four-fermion operators of the form $(\bar{\nu}_{\alpha} \gamma {\nu}_{\beta}) (\bar{f} \gamma f)$, where $f$ is an electron or first generation quark. We assume these operators are generated at dimension $\geq 8$, so the related vertices involving charged leptons, obtained by an SU(2) transformation $\nu_{\delta} \to e_{\delta}$, do not appear at tree level. These related vertices necessarily arise at one loop, via $W$ exchange. We catalogue current constraints from $\sin^2 \theta_W$ measurements in neutrino scattering, from atmospheric neutrino observations, from LEP, and from bounds on the related charged lepton operators. We estimate future bounds from comparing KamLAND and solar neutrino data, and from measuring $\sin^2 \theta_W$ at the near detector of a neutrino factory. Operators constructed with $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_e$ should not confuse the determination of oscillation parameters at a $\nu$factory, because the processes we consider are more sensitive than oscillations at the far detector. We discuss whether the NuTeV anomaly can be explained, compatibly with all other data, by QCD effects (maybe, if the strange sea is asymmetric, or there is a tiny violation of isospin), new physics in propagators or couplings of the vector bosons (not really), loops of supersymmetric particles (no), dimension six operators (yes, for one specific SU(2)-invariant operator), leptoquarks (not in a minimal way), extra U(1) gauge bosons (maybe: an unmixed Z' coupled to B-3L_mu also increases the muon g-2 by about 10^{-9} and gives a `burst' to cosmic rays above the GZK cutoff)., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures. We present a quantitative appraisal of the physics potential for neutrino experiments at the front-end of a muon storage ring. We estimate the forseeable accuracy in the determination of several interesting observables, and explore the consequences of these measurements. We discuss the extraction of individual quark and antiquark densities from polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. In particular we study the implications for the undertanding of the nucleon spin structure. We assess the determination of alpha_s from scaling violation of structure functions, and from sum rules, and the determination of sin^2(theta_W) from elastic nu-e and deep-inelastic nu-p scattering. We then consider the production of charmed hadrons, and the measurement of their absolute branching ratios. We study the polarization of Lambda baryons produced in the current and target fragmentation regions. We analyse the neutral scalar sector of the MSSM without R-parity. Our analysis is performed for a one-generation model in terms of ``basis-independent'' parameters, and includes one-loop corrections due to large yukawa couplings. We concentrate on the consequences of large $R_p$ violating masses in the soft sector, which mix the Higgses with the sleptons, because these are only constrained by their one-loop contributions to neutrino masses. We focus on the effect of $R_p$-violation on the Higgs mass and branching ratios.
