24. Domain-Specific Acceleration and Auto-Parallelization of Legacy Scientific Code in FORTRAN 77 using Source-to-Source Compilation

Abstract

Massively parallel accelerators such as GPGPUs, manycores and FPGAs represent a powerful and affordable tool for scientists who look to speed up simulations of complex systems. However, porting code to such devices requires a detailed understanding of heterogeneous programming tools and effective strategies for parallelization. In this paper we present a source to source compilation approach with whole-program analysis to automatically transform single-threaded FORTRAN 77 legacy code into OpenCL-accelerated programs with parallelized kernels. The main contributions of our work are: (1) whole-source refactoring to allow any subroutine in the code to be offloaded to an accelerator. (2) Minimization of the data transfer between the host and the accelerator by eliminating redundant transfers. (3) Pragmatic auto-parallelization of the code to be offloaded to the accelerator by identification of parallelizable maps and reductions. We have validated the code transformation performance of the compiler on the NIST FORTRAN 78 test suite and several real-world codes: the Large Eddy Simulator for Urban Flows, a high-resolution turbulent flow model; the shallow water component of the ocean model Gmodel; the Linear Baroclinic Model, an atmospheric climate model and Flexpart-WRF, a particle dispersion simulator. The automatic parallelization component has been tested on as 2-D Shallow Water model (2DSW) and on the Large Eddy Simulator for Urban Flows (UFLES) and produces a complete OpenCL-enabled code base. The fully OpenCL-accelerated versions of the 2DSW and the UFLES are resp. 9x and 20x faster on GPU than the original code on CPU, in both cases this is the same performance as manually ported code., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to "Computers and Fluids" as full paper from ParCFD conference entry

Abstract

Introduction: The benefits of physical activity for mental health and well-being and the associations between parental mental health and children's mental health have been well established. These important issues tend to be examined separately however, and there is limited research on the associations between parent and child physical activity and mental health when all considered together. While family focused practice is recommended to provide support for parents who have mental health problems and their families and includes various components (such as psychoeducation, support for mental health and parenting), promoting physical activity for parents and children is not usually a core component of these interventions. Methods: The Northern Ireland Youth Wellbeing Survey aimed to provide estimates of the prevalence of mental health problems among children and young people. The survey also included questions about parental physical activity, parental mental health, and children's physical activity (for those aged 11-19 years). The main aim of the analysis reported in this article was to explore possible bivariate associations between parent and child physical activity and mental health and also explore these associations when all considered together. Participants were included in the analysis where there were completed interviews for the young person and one of their parents, and both young person and parent provided responses in relation to questions on weekly physical activity (n = 882). Results: The findings highlight the positive associations between parental physical activity and parental mental health, and between children's physical activity and children's mental health. They also explore some of the more complex interactions between these four variables, which suggest that gender may also be an important consideration. There were significant associations between father's physical activity and son's mental health, and son's physical activity and father's mental health. Discussions: These findings suggest that including support for parental physical activity and children's physical activity should be a routine component of family focused mental health interventions. It is important to acknowledge that there may be additional barriers to engaging in physical activity for families where a parent is experiencing mental health problems, and these should also be explored and addressed. Abstract

It is important to consider the mental health of social work students to promote their wellbeing and to ensure they are prepared for the potential stressors of practice. This cross-sectional survey of social work students (n = 240), the first of its kind on the island of Ireland, provides findings on mental health and a range of associated issues which can help to improve student welfare; the content of social work courses; social work practice; and so, outcomes for service users. 48. A comparative study of assertive outreach and community mental health team support for people with mental health problems in Northern Ireland

Abstract

Introduction: Assertive Outreach (AO) is a'specialist approach to working with people with severe and enduring mental health problems who are difficult to engage. It was established in Northern Ireland for the first time during 2003 so it was possible to take the opportunity to investigate its effectiveness in this context and to also examine some of the issues raised in other countries about this approach, including the level of perceived coercion and'quality of working relationships. Objective: To establish whether AD is an effective model of care for people with severe and enduring mental health problems in Northern Ireland, in comparison with standard Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) follow up. Design: This was a quasi-experimental design as it was not possible to rando':11ly allocate. There was an AD group (n=38) and a CMHT group (n=38). Key-workers and clients were interviewed at baseline and followed up at nine and eighteen months. Hospital use data was collected for all 76 who met the inclusion criteria. At baseline 60/76 consented to some form of involvement and it was possible to complete interviews for 55/60 over the 18 months. Main Measures: Clients were interviewed using standardised measures to assess satisfaction with services; the relationship with their key-worker; symptoms; empowerment; quality of life; coercion; childhood trauma; and insight. Key-workers were interviewed to assess. engagement; the relationship with their client; the strategies they use to encourage compliance; social functioning; and an overview of needs. Key findings: AO achieved a statistically significant reduction in hospital use (51 %). AO may improve engagement but this finding was not statistically significant. Less than half of the participants (24/55) had the same key-worker throughout the 18 months. AO workers used less potentially coercive strategies to encourage compliance.
