We investigate interferometric techniques to estimate the deflection angle of an optical beam and compare them to the direct detection of the beam deflection. We show that quantum metrology methods lead to a unifying treatment for both single photons and classical fields. Using the Fisher information to assess the precision limits of the interferometric schemes, we show that the precision can be increased by exploiting the initial transverse displacement of the beam. This gain, which is present for both Sagnac and Mach-Zehnder-like configurations, can be considerable when compared to non-interferometric methods. In addition to the fundamental increase in precision, the interferometric schemes have the technical advantage that (i) the precision limits can be saturated by a sole polarization measurement on the field, and that (ii) the detection system can be placed at any longitudinal position along the beam. We also consider position-dependent polarization measurements, and show that in this case the precision increases with the propagation distance, as well as the initial transverse displacement., Comment: Comments are welcome

We investigate the generation of entanglement between two non interacting qubits coupled to a common reservoir. An experimental setup was conceived to encode one qubit on the polarization of an optical beam and another qubit on its transverse mode. The action of the reservoir is implemented as conditional operations on these two qubits, controlled by the longitudinal path as an ancillary degree of freedom. An entanglement witness and the two-qubit concurrence are easily evaluated from direct intensity measurements showing an excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction., Comment: 7 pagea, 5 figures

Hyperentanglement --- simultaneous entanglement between multiple degrees of freedom of two or more systems --- has been used to enhance quantum information tasks such as quantum communication and photonic quantum computing. Here we show that hyperentanglement can lead to increased quantum advantage in metrology, with contributions from the entanglement in each degree of freedom, allowing for Heisenberg scaling in the precision of parameter estimation. Our experiment employs photon pairs entangled in polarization and spatial degrees of freedom to estimate a small tilt angle of a mirror. Precision limits beyond shot noise are saturated through a simple binary measurement of the polarization state. The broad validity of the dynamics considered here implies that similar strategies based on hyperentanglement can offer improvement in a wide variety of metrological tasks., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Post-selection strategies have been proposed with the aim of amplifying weak signals, which may help to overcome detection thresholds associated with technical noise in high-precision measurements. Here we use an optical setup to experimentally explore two different post-selection protocols for the estimation of a small parameter: a weak-value amplification procedure and an alternative method, that does not provide amplification, but nonetheless is shown to be more robust for the sake of parameter estimation. Each technique leads approximately to the saturation of quantum limits for the estimation precision, expressed by the Cram\'er-Rao bound. We report a quantum measurement beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL) for the amplitude of a small displacement acting on a cavity field. This measurement uses as resource an entangled mesoscopic state, prepared by the resonant interaction of a circular Rydberg atom with a field stored in a superconducting cavity. We analyse the measurement process in terms of Fisher information and prove that it is, in principle, optimal. The achieved experimental precision, 2.4 dB below the SQL, is well understood in terms of experimental imperfections.This method could be transposed to other systems, particularly to circuit QED, for the precise measurements of weak forces acting on oscillators., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The implementation of weak-value amplification requires the pre- and post-selection of states of a quantum system, followed by the observation of the response of the meter, which interacts weakly with the system. Data acquisition from the meter is conditioned to successful post-selection events. Here we derive an optimal post-selection procedure for estimating the coupling constant between system and meter, and show that it leads both to weak-value amplification and to the saturation of the quantum Fisher information, under conditions fulfilled by all previously reported experiments on the amplification of weak signals. For most of the pre-selected states, full information on the coupling constant can be extracted from the meter data set alone, while for a small fraction of the space of pre-selected states, it must be obtained from the post-selection statistics.

When an initially entangled pair of qubits undergoes local decoherence processes, there are a number of ways in which the original entanglement can spread throughout the multipartite system consisting of the two qubits and their environments. Here we report theoretical and experimental results regarding the dynamics of the distribution of entanglement in this system. The experiment employs an all optical set-up in which the qubits are encoded in the polarization degrees of freedom of two photons, and each local decoherence channel is implemented with an interferometer that couples the polarization to the path of each photon, which acts as an environment. We monitor the dynamics and distribution of entanglement and observe the transition from bipartite to multipartite entanglement and back, and show how these transitions are intimately related to the sudden death and sudden birth of entanglement. The multipartite entanglement is further analyzed in terms of 3- and 4- partite entanglement contributions, and genuine four-qubit entanglement is observed at some points of the evolution., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The open-system dynamics of entanglement plays an important role in the assessment of the robustness of quantum information processes and also in the investigation of the classical limit of quantum mechanics. Here we show that, subjacent to this dynamics, there is a subtle flow of quantum correlations. We use a recently proposed optical setup, which allows joint tomography of system and environment, to show that the decay of an initial bipartite entangled state leads to the build up of multipartite entanglement and quantum discord, the latter exhibiting a non-analytic behavior that signals the emergence of maximal genuine quantum entanglement. The origin of this analyticity is shown to be distinct from similar behavior previously found in bipartite systems. Precise measurements of tiny forces and displacements play an important role in science and technology. The precision of recent experiments, while beginning to reach the limits imposed by quantum mechanics, is necessarily spoiled by the unavoidable influence of noise. Here we obtain a quantum limit for the uncertainty in the estimation of a resonant classical force acting on a noisy quantum-mechanical oscillator. The evaluation of the minimal evolution time between two distinguishable states of a system is important for assessing the maximal speed of quantum computers and communication channels. Lower bounds for this minimal time have been proposed for unitary dynamics. Here we show that it is possible to extend this concept to nonunitary processes, using an attainable lower bound that is connected to the quantum Fisher information for time estimation. The minimum achievable statistical uncertainty in the estimation of physical parameters is determined by the quantum Fisher information. Its computation for noisy systems is still a challenging problem. Using a variational approach, we present an equation for obtaining the quantum Fisher information, which has an explicit dependence on the mathematical description of the noise. This method is applied to obtain a useful analytical bound to the quantum precision in the estimation of phase-shifts under phase diffusion, which shows that the estimation uncertainty cannot be smaller than a noise-dependent constant., Comment: Published Version: 5 pages (including references), 1 figure, typos corrected, and text little bit improved

The estimation of parameters characterizing dynamical processes is central to science and technology. The estimation error changes with the number N of resources employed in the experiment (which could quantify, for instance, the number of probes or the probing energy). Typically, it scales as 1/N^(1/2). Quantum strategies may improve the precision, for noiseless processes, by an extra factor 1/N^(1/2). For noisy processes, it is not known in general if and when this improvement can be achieved. Here we propose a general framework for obtaining attainable and useful lower bounds for the ultimate limit of precision in noisy systems. We apply this bound to lossy optical interferometry and atomic spectroscopy in the presence of dephasing, showing that it captures the main features of the transition from the 1/N to the 1/N^(1/2) behaviour as N increases, independently of the initial state of the probes, and even with use of adaptive feedback., Comment: Published in Nature Physics. The non-conservation of entanglement, when two or more particles interact, sets it apart from other dynamical quantities like energy and momentum. It does not allow the interpretation of the subtle dynamics of entanglement as a flow of this quantity between the constituents of the system. Here we show that adding a third party to a two-particle system may lead to a conservation law that relates the quantities characterizing the bipartite entanglement between each of the parties and the other two. We provide an experimental demonstration of this idea using entangled photons, and generalize it to N-partite GHZ states.

We analyze quantum state-transfer optimization within hybrid open systems, from a "noisy" (write-in) qubit to its "quiet" counterpart (storage qubit). Intriguing interplay is revealed between our ability to avoid bath-induced errors that profoundly depend on the bath-memory time and the limitations imposed by leakage out of the operational subspace. Counterintuitively, under no circumstances is the fastest transfer optimal (for a given transfer energy).

A general method for the study of the entanglement evolution of graph states under the action of Pauli was recently proposed in [Cavalcanti, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 030502 (2009)]. This method is based on lower and upper bounds on the entanglement of the entire state as a function only of the state of a considerably-smaller subsystem, which undergoes an effective noise process. This provides a huge simplification on the size of the matrices involved in the calculation of entanglement in these systems. In the present paper we elaborate on this method in details and generalize it to other natural situations not described by Pauli maps. Specifically, for Pauli maps we introduce an explicit formula for the characterization of the resulting effective noise. Beyond Pauli maps, we show that the same ideas can be applied to the case of thermal reservoirs at arbitrary temperature. In the latter case, we discuss how to optimize the bounds as a function of the noise strength. We illustrate our ideas with explicit exemplary results for several different graphs and particular decoherence processes. We propose a quantum computer architecture involving substitutional donors in photonic-crystal silicon cavities and the optical initialization, manipulation, and detection processes already demonstrated in ion traps and other atomic systems. Our scheme considerably simplifies the implementation of the building blocks for the successful operation of silicon-based solid-state quantum computers, including positioning of the donors, realization of one- and two-qubit gates, initialization and readout of the qubits. Detailed consideration of the processes involved, using state-of-the-art values for the relevant parameters, indicates that this architecture might lead to errors per gate compatible with scalable quantum computation.

We report on an experimental investigation of the dynamics of entanglement between a single qubit and its environment, as well as for pairs of qubits interacting independently with individual environments, using photons obtained from parametric down-conversion. The qubits are encoded in the polarizations of single photons, while the interaction with the environment is implemented by coupling the polarization of each photon with its momentum. A convenient Sagnac interferometer allows for the implementation of several decoherence channels and for the continuous monitoring of the environment. For an initially-entangled photon pair, one observes the vanishing of entanglement before coherence disappears. For a single qubit interacting with an environment, the dynamics of complementarity relations connecting single-qubit properties and its entanglement with the environment is experimentally determined. The evolution of a single qubit under continuous monitoring of the environment is investigated, demonstrating that a qubit may decay even when the environment is found in the unexcited state. This implies that entanglement can be increased by local continuous monitoring, which is equivalent to entanglement distillation. We also present a detailed analysis of the transfer of entanglement from the two-qubit system to the two corresponding environments, between which entanglement may suddenly appear, and show instances for which no entanglement is created between dephasing environments, nor between each of them and the corresponding qubit: the initial two-qubit entanglement gets transformed into legitimate multiqubit entanglement of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) type., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures; only .ps was working, now .pdf is also available

We investigate the decay of entanglement of generalized N-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states interacting with independent reservoirs. Scaling laws for the decay of entanglement and for its finite-time extinction (sudden death) are derived for different types of reservoirs. The latter is found to increase with the number of particles. However, entanglement becomes arbitrarily small, and therefore useless as a resource, much before it completely disappears, around a time which is inversely proportional to the number of particles. We present a quantum circuit that implements a non-demolition measurement of complementary single- and bi-partite properties of a two-qubit system: entanglement and single-partite visibility and predictability. We demonstrate the difference between local, single-particle dynamics and global dynamics of entangled quantum systems coupled to independent environments. Using an all-optical experimental setup, we show that, while the environment-induced decay of each system is asymptotic, quantum entanglement may suddenly disappear. We propose an experimental procedure to directly measure the state of an electromagnetic field inside a resonator, corresponding to a superconducting transmission line, coupled to a Cooper-pair box (CPB). The measurement protocol is based on the use of a dispersive interaction between the field and the CPB, and the coupling to an external classical field that is tuned to resonance with either the field or the CPB. We propose a method for directly probing the dynamics of disentanglement of an initial two-qubit entangled state, under the action of a reservoir. We show that it is possible to detect disentanglement, for experimentally realizable examples of decaying systems, through the measurement of a single observable, which is invariant throughout the decay. The systems under consideration may lead to either finite-time or asymptotic disentanglement. A general prescription for measuring this observable, which yields an operational meaning to entanglement measures, is proposed, and exemplified for cavity quantum electrodynamics and trapped ions., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We show how sub-Planck phase-space structures in the Wigner function can be used to achieve Heisenberg-limited sensitivity in weak force measurements. Nonclassical states of harmonic oscillators, consisting of superpositions of coherent states, are shown to be useful for the measurement of weak forces that cause translations or rotations in phase space, which is done by entangling the quantum oscillator with a two-level system. We investigate how decoherence affects the short-time separation between quantum and classical dynamics for classically chaotic systems, within the framework of a specific model. For a wide range of parameters, the distance between the corresponding phase-space distributions depends on a single parameter $\chi$ that relates an effective Planck constant $\hbar_{\rm eff}$, the Lyapunov coeffficient, and the diffusion constant. This distance peaks at a time that depends logarithmically on $\hbar_{\rm eff}$, in agreement with previous estimations of the separation time for Hamiltonian systems. We discuss the roles of the macroscopic limit and of different system-environment interactions in the quantum-classical transition for a chaotic system. We consider the kicked harmonic oscillator subject to reservoirs that correspond in the classical case to purely dissipative or purely diffusive behavior, in a situation that can be implemented in ion trap experiments. In the dissipative case, we derive an expression for the time at which quantum and classical predictions become different (breaking time) and show that a complete quantum-classical correspondence is not possible in the chaotic regime. For the diffusive environment we estimate the minimum value of the diffusion coefficient necessary to retrieve the classical limit and also show numerical evidence that, for diffusion below this threshold, the breaking time behaves, essentially, as in the case of the system without a reservoir., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. We develop a dynamic theory of output coupling, for fermionic atoms initially confined in a magnetic trap. We consider an exactly soluble one-dimensional model, with a spatially localized delta-type coupling between the atoms in the trap and a continuum of free-particle external modes. Two important special cases are considered for the confinement potential: the infinite box and the harmonic oscillator. We establish that in both cases a bound state of the coupled system appears for any value of the coupling constant, implying that the trap population does not vanish in the infinite-time limit. For weak coupling, the energy spectrum of the outgoing beam exhibits peaks corresponding to the initially occupied energy levels in the trap; the height of these peaks increases with the energy. As the coupling gets stronger, the energy spectrum is displaced towards dressed energies of the fermions in the trap. The corresponding dressed states result from the coupling between the unperturbed fermionic states in the trap, mediated by the coupling between these states and the continuum. In the strong-coupling limit, there is a reinforcement of the lowest-energy dressed mode, which contributes to the energy spectrum of the outgoing beam more strongly than the other modes. This effect is especially pronounced for the one-dimensional box, which indicates that the efficiency of the mode-reinforcement mechanism depends on the steepness of the confinement potential. In this case, a quasi-monochromatic anti-bunched atomic beam is obtained. We propose physical interpretations for stochastic methods which have been developed recently to describe the evolution of a quantum system interacting with a reservoir. As opposed to the usual reduced density operator approach, which refers to ensemble averages, these methods deal with the dynamics of single realizations, and involve the solution of stochastic Schr\"odinger equations. These procedures have been shown to be completely equivalent to the master equation approach when ensemble averages are taken over many realizations. We show that these techniques are not only convenient mathematical tools for dissipative systems, but may actually correspond to concrete physical processes, for any temperature of the reservoir. We consider a mode of the electromagnetic field in a cavity interacting with a beam of two- or three-level atoms, the field mode playing the role of a small system and the atomic beam standing for a reservoir at finite temperature, the interaction between them being given by the Jaynes-Cummings model. We show that the evolution of the field states, under continuous monitoring of the state of the atoms which leave the cavity, can be described in terms of either the Monte Carlo Wave-Function (quantum jump) method or a stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, depending on the system configuration.
