Currently, PSI delivers the most intense continuous muon beam in the world with up to a few 108 µ+/s. The High-Intensity Muon Beams (HIMB) project is developing a new target station and muon beamlines able to deliver 1010 µ+/s, with a huge impact for low-energy, high-precision muon experiments. While the next generation of proton drivers with beam powers in excess of the currently achieved 1.4 MW still require significant research and development, the focus of HIMB is to improve the surface muon yield with a new target geometry and to increase capture and transmission with a solenoid-based beamline in order to reach a total efficiency of approximately 10 %. With a nominal beam power of nearly 1.4 MW, the PSI High Intensity Proton Accelerator (HIPA) is currently at the forefront of the high intensity frontier of particle accelerators. Key issues of this facility are minimization of beam losses as well as safe operation of the SINQ spallation source. Particular attention is being recently paid towards an improved understanding of the properties of the SINQ beam line by both enhancing the beam transport simulations and developing new diagnostic elements which can also, in some cases, preserve the target integrity by preventing too large beam current density, inaccurate beam steering or improper beam delivery. Moreover, part of the SINQ beam diagnostic concept is being rethought in order to include important missing devices like BPMs. On the simulation side, newly developed composite calculations involving general purpose particle transport programs like MCNPX and BDSIM will deliver insights about beam losses and transmission through collimators. All recent and planned developments of the SINQ beam line will be discussed in this contribution.

Two target stations in the 590 MeV proton beamline of the High Intensity Proton Accelerator (HIPA) at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) produce pions and muons for seven secondary beamlines, leading to several experimental stations. The two target stations are 18 m apart. Target M is a graphite target with an effective thickness of 5 mm, Target E is a graphite wheel with a thickness of 40 mm or 60 mm. Due to the spreading of the beam in the thick target, a high power collimator system is needed to shape the beam for further transport. The beam is then transported to either the SINQ target, a neutron spallation source, or stopped in the beam dump, where about 450 kW beam power is dissipated. Targets, collimators and beam dumps are described.

The beam interruptions (interlocks) of particle accelerators, despite being necessary safety measures, lead to abrupt operational changes and a substantial loss of beam time. A novel time series classification approach is applied to decrease beam time loss in the High-Intensity Proton Accelerator complex by forecasting interlock events. The forecasting is performed through binary classification of windows of multivariate time series. The time series are transformed into Recurrence Plots which are then classified by a Convolutional Neural Network, which not only captures the inner structure of the time series but also uses the advances of image classification techniques. Our best-performing interlock-to-stable classifier reaches an Area under the ROC Curve value of 0.71±0.01 compared to 0.65±0.01 of a Random Forest model, and it can potentially reduce the beam time loss by 0.5±0.2 s per interlock., Information, 12 (3), ISSN:2078-2489

We report on gold foil activation measurements performed along a vertical channel along the tank of the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The activities obtained at various distances from the spallation target are in very good agreement with MCNPX simulations which take into account the detailed description of the source as built.

At Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), we have measured the losses and depolarization probabilities of ultracold neutrons on various materials: (i) nickel-molybdenum alloys with weight percentages of 82/18, 85/15, 88/12, 91/9, and 94/6 and natural nickel Ni100, (ii) nickel-vanadium NiV93/7, (iii) copper, and (iv) deuterated polystyrene (dPS). For the different samples, storage-time constants up to $\ensuremath{\sim}460\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{s}$ were obtained at room temperature. The corresponding loss parameters for ultracold neutrons, $\ensuremath{\eta}$, varied between $1.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $2.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. All $\ensuremath{\eta}$ values are in agreement with theory except for dPS, where anomalous losses at room temperature were established with four standard deviations. The depolarization probabilities per wall collision $\ensuremath{\beta}$ measured with unprecedented sensitivity varied between $0.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ and $9.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$. Our depolarization result for copper differs from other experiments by 4.4 and 15.8 standard deviations. The $\ensuremath{\beta}$ values of the paramagnetic NiMo alloys over molybdenum content show an increase of $\ensuremath{\beta}$ with increasing Mo content. This is in disagreement with expectations from literature. Finally, ferromagnetic behavior of NiMo alloys at room temperature was found for molybdenum contents of 6.5 at.% or less and paramagnetic behavior for more than 8.7 at.%. This may contribute to solving an ambiguity in literature.

A new type of ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source based on the spallation process is under construction at PSI. The essential elements are a pulsed proton beam with highest intensity ( I p ≥ 2 mA ) and a low duty cycle (1%), a lead spallation target, a large D 2 O moderator and a solid deuterium ( sD 2 ) converter system. Spallation neutrons are thermalized in the D 2 O , further cooled and partially downscattered into the ultra-cold neutron range in the sD 2 . The expected UCN density is higher than 1000 UCN / cm 3 in typical experiments, an increase of almost two orders of magnitude over the best source currently available (at ILL). The new UCN source is expected to come into operation in 2009.

With a nominal beam power of nearly 1 MW on target, the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source (SINQ), ranks among the world's most powerful spallation neutron sources. The proton beam transport to the SINQ target is carried out exclusively by means of linear magnetic elements. In the transport line to SINQ the beam is scattered in two meson production targets and as a consequence, at the SINQ target entrance the beam shape can be described by Gaussian distributions in transverse $x$ and $y$ directions with tails cut short by collimators. This leads to a highly nonuniform power distribution inside the SINQ target, giving rise to thermal and mechanical stresses. In view of a future proton beam intensity upgrade, the possibility of homogenizing the beam distribution by means of a fast beam rotation system is currently under investigation. Important aspects which need to be studied are the impact of a rotating proton beam on the resulting neutron spectra, spatial flux distributions and additional---previously not present---proton losses causing unwanted activation of accelerator components. Hence a new source description method was developed for the radiation transport code MCNPX. This new feature makes direct use of the results from the proton beam optics code TURTLE. Its advantage to existing MCNPX source options is that all phase space information and correlations of each primary beam particle computed with TURTLE are preserved and transferred to MCNPX. Simulations of the different beam distributions together with their consequences in terms of neutron production are presented in this publication. Additionally, a detailed description of the coupling method between TURTLE and MCNPX is provided.

Precise results on the spin‐dependent structure functions g1p(x,Q2) and g1d(x,Q2) over the kinematic range 0.0021 < x < 0.9 and 0.1 < Q2 < 20 GeV2 are presented. The analyses base on data collected at the HERMES experiment at DESY in polarized deep‐inelastic scattering and make use of an unfolding algorithm in order to correct for radiation and detector smearing. Furthermore, final results of the first measurement of the tensor asymmetry Azz and the tensor structure function b1d(x,Q2) are provided.

Ultracold neutrons were stored in a volume, using a magnetic dipole field shutter. Radial confinement was provided by material walls. Low-field seeking neutrons were axially confined above the magnetic field. High-field seeking neutrons are trapped inside the magnetic field.
