The enemy release hypothesis (ERH) attributes the success of some exotic plant species to reduced top‐down effects of natural enemies in the non‐native range relative to the native range. Many studies have tested this idea, but very few have considered the simultaneous effects of multiple kinds of enemies on more than one invasive species in both the native and non‐native ranges. Here, we examined the effects of two important groups of natural enemies–insect herbivores and soil biota–on the performance of Tanacetum vulgare (native to Europe but invasive in the USA) and Solidago canadensis (native to the USA but invasive in Europe) in their native and non‐native ranges, and in the presence and absence of competition.In the field, we replicated full‐factorial experiments that crossed insecticide, T. vulgare–S. canadensis competition, and biogeographic range (Europe vs. USA) treatments. In greenhouses, we replicated full‐factorial experiments that crossed soil sterilization, plant–soil feedback, and biogeographic range treatments. We evaluated the effects of experimental treatments on T. vulgare and S. canadensis biomass.The effects of natural enemies were idiosyncratic. In the non‐native range and relative to populations in the native range, T. vulgare escaped the negative effects of insect herbivores but not soil biota, depending upon the presence of S. canadensis; and S. canadensis escaped the negative effects of soil biota but not insect herbivores, regardless of competition. Thus, biogeographic escape from natural enemies depended upon the enemies, the invader, and competition. Synthesis: By explicitly testing the ERH in terms of more than one kind of enemy, more than one invader, and more than one continent, this study enhances our nuanced perspective of how natural enemies can influence the performance of invasive species in their native and non‐native ranges., We examined a leading hypothesis of plant invasion, the enemy release hypothesis, in terms of multiple invasive species, multiple natural enemies, and multiple continents. We found that escape from natural enemies depends on the enemies, the invader, and competition.

Objective During our work, we examined the possible contribution of MAIT cells in the pathogenesis of the clinical phase of early-onset preeclampsia and how this could be influenced by TIGIT and CD226 immune checkpoint molecules. Study Design 37 pregnant women diagnosed with early-onset preeclampsia and 36 healthy, age-matched control women were involved in this study. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated by density gradient and frozen. After thawing, cells were stained with monoclonal antibodies to characterize MAIT, MAIT-like, and non-MAIT cells. Flow cytometric analyses were used to measure TIGIT, CD226, intracellular perforin, and granzyme B expression. Results MAIT (CD3+ CD8+ Vα7.2+ CD161++), MAIT-like (CD3+ CD8+ Vα7.2+ CD161+) and non-MAIT (CD3+ CD8+ Vα7.2+ CD161-) cell population were identified based on their CD161 receptor positivity. MAIT cells markedly differed in proportion, TIGIT expression, granzyme B, and perforin content compared to MAIT-like and non-MAIT cells. A significant difference was determined in TIGIT expression by non-MAIT cells and in CD8/CD226 positive relationship between the preeclamptic and healthy condition. Conclusions Considering that we did not detect a notable difference between early-onset preeclampsia and healthy pregnancy, we suppose that peripheral MAIT cells expressing TIGIT and CD226 immune checkpoint molecules have a marginal role in the pathogenesis of early-onset preeclampsia.

NKT cell population is a relatively well-characterized immune cell subset. Numerous publications have characterized the phenotypical features of its subpopulations even in human pregnancy. Nevertheless, there have not been studies investigating the distribution of the NKT cells based on the surface presence of the CD8 receptor. Thirty-four pregnant women from the first trimester, 30 from the second, and 36 from the third trimester of pregnancy in addition to 35 healthy non-pregnant women have been involved in the study. PBMCs were isolated from peripheral blood, CD8+ and CD8- NKT cells were then studied by flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies. Immune checkpoint molecules and intracellular markers were also measured. Substantial differences were revealed in the proportions of the NKT cell subpopulations in the healthy control cohort and the pregnant groups. By comparing the investigated groups, significant changes were detected in the expression levels of PD-L1, TIGIT, CD155, and NKG2D. Further associations were observed through examination of the relative expressions of TIGIT and CD226 in the CD8+ NKT subset. Data suggest that the CD8+ NKT cells are under fine regulation during healthy human pregnancy.

Early-onset preeclampsia is a common obstetrical disease with a potential genetic background and is characterized by the predominance of Th1 immune response. However, although many studies investigated the immunological environment in preeclamptic patients, no information is available about the potential role of the TIGIT/CD226/CD112/CD155 immune checkpoint pathway. A total of 37 pregnant women diagnosed with early-onset preeclampsia and 36 control women with appropriately matched gestational age were enrolled in this study. From venous blood, mononuclear cells were isolated and stored in the freezer. Using multicolor flow cytometry T-, NK cell and monocyte subpopulations were determined. After characterization of the immune cell subsets, TIGIT, CD226, CD112, and CD155 surface expression and intracellular granzyme B content were determined by flow cytometer. Significantly decreased CD226 expression and increased CD112 and CD155 surface expression were detected in almost all investigated T-cell, NK cell, and monocyte subpopulations in women diagnosed with preeclampsia compared to the healthy group. Furthermore, reduced TIGIT and granzyme B expression were measured only in preeclamptic CD8+ T cells compared to healthy pregnant women. A decreased level of the activatory receptor CD226 in effector lymphocytes accompanied with an elevated surface presence of the CD112 and CD155 ligands in monocytes could promote the TIGIT/CD112 and/or TIGIT/CD155 ligation, which mediates inhibitory signals. We assume that the inhibition of the immune response via this immune checkpoint pathway might contribute to compensate for the Th1 predominance during early-onset preeclampsia.

Galectins are one of the critical players in the tumor microenvironment–tumor crosstalk and the regulation of local immunity. Galectin-9 has been in the limelight in tumor immunology. Galectin-9 possesses its multiplex biological functions both extracellularly and intracellularly, plays a pivotal role in the modulation of adaptive and innate immunity, and induces immune tolerance. NK-92MI cell lines against different malignancies were extensively studied, and recently published trials used genetically chimeric antigen receptor-transfected NK-92MI cells in tumor immunotherapy. Besides the intensive research in tumor immunotherapy, limited information is available on their immune-checkpoint expression and the impact of checkpoint ligands on their effector functions. To uncover the therapeutic potential of modulating Galectin-9-related immunological pathways in NK-cell-based therapy, we investigated the dose-dependent effect of soluble Galectin-9 on the TIM-3 checkpoint receptor and NKG2D, CD69, FasL, and perforin expression of NK-92MI cells. We also examined how their cytotoxicity and cytokine production was altered after Gal-9 treatment and in the presence of different serum supplements using flow cytometric analysis. Our study provides evidence that the Galectin-9/TIM-3 pathway plays an important role in the regulation of NK cell function, and about the modulatory role of Galectin-9 on the cytotoxicity and cytokine production of NK-92MI cells in the presence of different serum supplements. We hope that our results will aid the development of novel NK-cell-based strategies that target Galectin-9/TIM-3 checkpoint in tumors resistant to T-cell-based immunotherapy.

Melissopalynology, antioxidant capacity and mineral and toxic element contents were analyzed in eight types of Hungarian honeys. Based on color, two groups were distinguished: light honeys comprised acacia, amorpha, phacelia and linden honeys, while dark honeys included sunflower, chestnut, fennel and sage honeys, with 100 to 300 and 700 to 1500 mAU, respectively. The unifloral origin of each sample was supported using pollen analysis. The absorbance of honey correlated positively with antioxidant capacity determined by three different methods (TRC, DPPH, ORAC), and also with mineral content. The exception was the light amber linden honey with significantly higher K content and antiradical activity than other light honeys. The Mn, Zn and Fe contents were the highest in chestnut, sunflower and fennel honeys, respectively. The black meadow sage honey performed best regarding the content of other elements and antioxidant activity. The concentrations of several toxic elements were below the detection limit in the samples, indicating their good quality. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed correlations between different antioxidant assays and minerals, and furthermore, confirmed the botanical authentication of the honeys based on the studied parameters. To our best knowledge, the present study is the first to provide a complex analysis of quality parameters of eight unifloral Hungarian honeys.

There is a growing interest in the research of natural products with potent activity in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Thereby, essential oil phytochemicals have demonstrated broad bioactivities. This study highlights the chemical composition of essential oils obtained from the leaves and inflorescences of diverse species of the genus Solidago (Solidago canadensis, Solidago gigantea, Solidago virgaurea and Solidago×niederederi), also known as Goldenrod, through GC/MS analysis, and their antiproliferative activity on three human tumor cell lines (MDA-MB 231, A375 and HCT116) by the MTT assay. The most represented chemical classes in the essential oils were oxygenated sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes and monoterpene hydrocarbons, with a remarkable contribution of compounds such as germacrene D (3.89-19.51 %), α-pinene (3.59-18.82 %), bornyl acetate (3.30-12.73 %) and caryophyllene oxide (3.07-9.18 %). Chemical quali- and quantitative differences were noticed between the leaves and flowers of the same species, as well as between the studied species. The MTT assay showed that the essential oils from the leaves were more active than those from the flower ones. The essential oil having the highest impact on cell viability was that from S.×niederederi (IC50 =12.93, 6.72, and 6.82 μg/ml), followed by S. virgaurea (IC50 =13.39, 7.96, and 8.36 μg/ml) and finally S. gigantea (IC50 =18.04, 5.94, and 8.10 μg/ml) on MDA-MB 231, A375 and HCT116 cell lines, respectively. The essential oil from S. canadensis showed the lowest activity (IC50 =29.33, 12.63, and 18.03 μg/ml, respectively). Taken together, these findings highlight the Solidago species as good sources of cytotoxic compounds. Further studies are encouraged on the in vivo effects and safety of these products.

Background: A growing body of evidence supports the importance of PD-1 and PD-L1, especially in the materno-fetal interface, although limited information is available about the peripheral expression of these molecules during the trimesters of pregnancy. Methods: 13 healthy women were enrolled from the 1st, 10 from the 2nd and 12 from the 3rd trimester of pregnancy at the same time, 10 healthy, age-matched nonpregnant women formed the control group. From peripheral blood, mononuclear cells were separated and stored at &ndash, 80 &deg, C. From freshly thawed samples, surface and intracellular staining were performed for flow cytometric analyses. CD107a degranulation assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity. Results: significant alternation was detected in PD-1 expression by CD8+T cells and in PD-L1 expression by CD8+T, CD4+T and Treg cells. An interesting relationship was revealed between the PD-1 and PD-L1 expression by the investigated subpopulations in 2nd trimester of pregnancy. Different expression patterns of an activation receptor NKG2D by the PD-1+ CD8+T cells was observed during pregnancy. The notable relationship was further determined in cytotoxicity between PD-1+ and NKG2D+ CD8+T cells throughout pregnancy. Conclusions: the different PD-1 presence and the relationship with NKG2D could contribute to the dynamic changes of the Th1 and Th2 predominance throughout the three trimesters of a healthy pregnancy.

Developing invasive plant management strategies is an important task in modern ecology, conservation biology and land management. Solidago gigantea is considered a problematic invader in Europe and Asia, where it forms dominant stands that can decrease species diversity. There is, therefore, an urgent need for effective management to reduce S. gigantea infestations and their negative impacts. We examined the efficacy of multiple approaches to S. gigantea management in Hungary. In our study, we evaluated the effect of several long‐term management techniques such as grazing, mowing and periodic flooding on the invader's density as well as native community diversity. In addition, we investigated the short‐ and long‐term effects of mowing combined with other treatment options, to estimate the influence of increased management intensity. Our results indicate that all tested management techniques had negative impacts on S. gigantea density. Short‐term mowing did not appear to improve species diversity in the resident community; however, all long‐term options improved species diversity. Moreover, combining treatments with mowing varied in its effectiveness; mowing once increased the efficacy of flooding, but decreased the efficacy of grazing, while mowing twice decreased efficacy of flooding. We suspect this is due to the increased intensity of disturbance, which does not allow for the natural recovery of communities, and after management ceases, invasion is able to re‐occur. Our results indicate that for effective management, we need to combine management options which act via different mechanisms, leading to cumulative positive effects on the resident community when applied at moderate levels.

Some invasive plant species rapidly evolve greater size and/or competitive ability in their nonnative ranges. However, it is not well known whether these traits transfer back to the native range, or instead represent genotype-by-environment interactions where traits are context specific to communities in the new range where the evolution occurred. Insight into transferability vs. context specificity can be tested using experiments performed with individuals from populations from the native and nonnative ranges of exotic invasive species. Using a widespread invasive plant species in Europe, Solidago gigantea, we established reciprocal common garden experiments in the native range (Montana, North America; n = 4) and the nonnative range (Hungary, Europe; n = 4) to assess differences in size, vegetative shoot number, and herbivory between populations from the native and nonnative ranges. In a greenhouse experiment, we also tested whether the inherent competitive ability of genotypes from 15 native and 15 invasive populations differed when pitted against 11 common native North American competitors. In common gardens, plants from both ranges considered together produced five times more biomass, grew four times taller, and developed five times more rhizomes in the nonnative range garden compared to the native range garden. The interaction between plant origin and the common garden location was highly significant, with plants from Hungary performing better than plants from Montana when grown in Hungary, and plants from Montana performing better than plants from Hungary when grown in Montana. In the greenhouse, there were no differences in the competitive effects and responses of S. gigantea plants from the two ranges when grown with North American natives. Our results suggest that S. gigantea might have undergone rapid evolution for greater performance abroad, but if so, this response does not translate to greater performance at home.

Essential oils (EOs) are becoming increasingly popular in medical applications because of their antimicrobial effect. Direct bioautography (DB) combined with thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a screening method for the detection of antimicrobial compounds in plant extracts, for example, in EOs. Due to their lipophilic character, the common microbiological assays (etc. disk diffusion) could not provide reliable results. The aim of this study was the evaluation of antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of the EO of cinnamon bark, clove, peppermint, thyme, and their main components against Haemophilus influenzae and H. parainfluenzae. Oil in water (O/W) type Pickering nano-emulsions stabilized with silica nanoparticles from each oil were prepared to increase their water-solubility. Samples with Tween80 surfactant and absolute ethanol were also used. Results showed that H. influenzae was more sensitive to the EOs than H. parainfluenzae (except for cinnamon bark oil). In thin layer chromatography-direct bioautography (TLC-DB) the ethanolic solutions of thyme oil presented the best activity against H. influenzae, while cinnamon oil was the most active against H. parainfluenzae. Pickering nano-emulsion of cinnamon oil inhibited the biofilm formation of H. parainfluenzae (76.35%) more efficiently than samples with Tween80 surfactant or absolute ethanol. In conclusion, Pickering nano-emulsion of EOs could inhibit the biofilm production effectively.

Comparing genetic diversity, genetic differentiation, and performance between native and nonnative populations has advanced our knowledge of contemporary evolution and its ecological consequences. However, such between-range comparisons can be complicated by high among-population variation within native and nonnative ranges. For example, native vs. nonnative comparisons between small and non-representative subsets of populations for species with very large distributions have the potential to mislead because they may not sufficiently account for within-range adaptation to climatic conditions, and demographic history that may lead to non-adaptive evolution. We used the cosmopolitan weed Conyza canadensis to study the interplay of adaptive and demographic processes across, to our knowledge, the broadest climatic gradient yet investigated in this context. To examine the distribution of genetic diversity, we genotyped 26 native and 26 nonnative populations at 12 microsatellite loci. Furthermore, we recorded performance traits for 12 native and 13 nonnative populations in the field and in the common garden. To analyze how performance was related to range and/or climate, we fit pedigree mixed-effects models. These models weighed the population random effect for co-ancestry to account for the influence of demographic history on phenotypic among-population differentiation. Genetic diversity was very low, selfing rates were very high, and both were comparable between native and nonnative ranges. Nonnative populations out-performed native populations in the field. However, our most salient result was that both neutral genetic differentiation and common garden performance were far more correlated with the climatic conditions from which populations originated than native vs. nonnative range affiliation. Including co-ancestry of our populations in our models greatly increased explained variance and our ability to detect significant main effects for among-population variation in performance. High propagule pressure and high selfing rates, in concert with the ability to adapt rapidly to climatic gradients, may have facilitated the global success of this weed. Neither native nor nonnative populations were homogeneous groups but responded comparably to similar environments in each range. We suggest that studies of contemporary evolution should consider widely distributed and genotyped populations to disentangle native vs. nonnative range effects from varying adaptive processes within ranges and from potentially confounding effects of demographic history.

International audience; Spontaneous forms of hemp (Cannabis sativa L., often reported as Cannabis sativa var. spontanea Vavilov) with a low content of psychoactive cannabinoids can be considered as a valuable source of other phytoconstituents to be used in nutraceuticals or for their health promoting properties. Chemical data on this hemp variety are rather scarce. In this article, we report a comprehensive phytochemical characterization of leaves, male and female inflorescences of C. sativa growing wild in Hungary. For the purpose, the essential oil along with polar extracts were analyzed using GC/MS, NMR and LC-DAD-MS techniques, respectively. The results indicated that female inflorescence essential oil contains high amounts of the CB2 agonists, (E)-caryophyllene (28.3 %) and cannabidiol (CBD; 24.9 %), whereas leaves and male inflorescence essential oils contained lower amounts of both compounds. HPLC/MS allowed to quantify cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabidiolic acid (CBD-A) in the ethyl acetate extracts from leaves, male and female inflorescences; they were 0.3, 0.8 and 0.9 %, and 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 %, respectively. Flavonoids of this spontaneous form of hemp were formed by C-glycosides and glucuronic acids of kaempferol and apigenin with a total content of 3.8, 6.1 and 7.8 mg/g in methanolic extracts from leaves, male and female inflorescences, respectively. Based on these results, spontaneous C. sativa may represent an important source of CB agonists and bioflavonoids to be used in nutraceuticals, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Recent studies revealed that from various ecological factors influencing nectar yield and quality of a plant, soil properties can be as important as microclimatic features. To date, few studies have investigated the relationship of soil characters to nectar traits of bee pollinated plants growing in natural associations. Our study intended to reveal which soil properties had the most powerful impact on nectar variables of wild garlic (Allium ursinum L.). Specimens were collected from fourteen habitats in two different years, and were potted in their original soil under the same climatic conditions. Nectar volumes and sugar concentrations were measured and soil samples were analysed for fourteen parameters. Statistical analyses revealed that the number of nectar producing Allium flowers, as well as the nectar volume and sugar content of nectar in individual flowers were influenced by both year and habitat. The humus, iron and sulphate content of soil showed negative correlation with the number of flowers producing nectar, total nectar volumes were negatively correlated with humus and iron content, but positively affected by magnesium content of the soil. Our results suggest that in addition to the effect of microclimatic factors, certain soil properties can have significant impact on nectar traits.

Helianthus tuberosus L. (Jerusalem artichoke), a perennial plant native to North America, is one of the most dangerous invasive species in Europe. The fast spread of the plant may be enhanced by its allelopathic effects, through the release of chemical compounds into the environment. The goal of this work was to determine the allelopathic effect of different plant parts of H. tuberosus and to study the temporal changes of allelopathic factors throughout the vegetation period, based on germination bioassays, chemical analysis of allelochemicals, and greenhouse experiments. Bioassay results demonstrated differences in the effect of H. tuberosus extracts, depending on the concentration, the test species, the plant part used for extraction, and the time of the treatment. From the bioactive compounds salicylic acid, 2-OH-cinnamic acid and 4-OH-benzaldehyde showed characteristic distribution patterns throughout the vegetation period. In the competition experiment, the presence of H. tuberosus exerted a strong negative effect on all tested species, independently of their treatment with activated carbon. Based on our results, we concluded that H. tuberosus can interfere with other species through allelochemical interactions. Moreover, seasonal dynamics of allelochemicals could be more important than suspected in plant competition and is likely to play an important role in the spread of the invasive H. tuberosus into new areas.

Two types of early spring Hungarian honeys, purchased as rape (Brassica napus L.) and ramson (Allium ursinum L.) honeys were identified and characterized. The 42 samples originated from various geographical locations, harvested in two different years. The unifloral origin of rape honeys was supported using melissopalynological analysis, while the samples marketed as ramson honeys were of multifloral origin with predominantly fruit tree or rape pollen grains. Color intensity and antioxidant capacities measured with 4 methods differed in uni- and multifloral honeys, but location and year of harvest had no influence within the honey types. Correlations were observed among antioxidant capacity values and color. The analysis of elements showed that essential elements were present in higher amounts in multifloral honeys, while in rape honeys the influence of geographical origin was observed. Much attention has been paid to the ecological impacts of invasive plants in their non-native ranges, but few studies have compared these impacts to those in the native ranges of invaders. This is important because biogeographical differences in species interactions suggest that evolutionary history might affect community assembly and thus contribute to our understanding of invasion. We correlated stem densities of Solidago gigantea, native to North America but highly invasive in Europe, with associated plant species richness in plots measured over large areas of the northwestern USA and Hungary. We also compared the effects of Solidago root extracts on the growth of plant species native to Europe and North America and that were common in our field sampling in each region. Increasing stem density of Solidago correlated with significant decreases in total species diversity and native species diversity in Europe, but not in North America. Extracts made from Solidago roots suppressed the root and shoot growth of a suite of species native to Europe and co-occurring with Solidago, more than co-occurring North American species as a group. Our results are consistent with a growing body of literature demonstrating a strong biogeographic context to exotic plant invasions. This body of work indicates that the biogeographic origin of species can affect community organization and that communities with a common evolutionary history might function differently than those that do not share such a history.

We have yet to adequately quantify the impacts of invaders in their non-native ranges relative to their native ranges. Such biogeographical comparisons are crucial to better understand the role of invasive species in plant–plant interactions and in the evolution of community organization. Using Solidago canadensis, we conducted field surveys in the native range (North America) and non-native range (Europe) and correlated stem density and aboveground biomass of Solidago with associated plant species richness and diversity indices. We also conducted experiments to compare the competitive and allelopathic impact of Solidago on the growth of species from its native and non-native ranges. In the field, increasing stem density and biomass of Solidago correlated with more significant decreases in total species richness and two diversity indices in Europe than in North America. Solidago strongly suppressed both European species and North American species in competition experiments, but this competitive effect did not differ between species from the different ranges. However, root extracts from Solidago strongly suppressed the root growth of European species as a group, but not North American species as a group. Our results indicate that the biogeographic origin of species can have important effects on plant interactions and community organization.

Background: The adobe bricks of old buildings can preserve diaspores of cultivated and weed species associated with arable fields. Recovery of these plant remains can provide insight into historical agriculture, and former weed flora.Aims: This study aims to describe and evaluate the changes in the weed flora in south-western Hungary, based on archaeobotanical findings and contemporary plot surveys.Methods: Plant remains of 51 adobe bricks dating from 1850 to 1950 were identified in south-western Hungary and compared with the flora of 104 plots from the same region.Results: A total of 276 species were identified from the adobe bricks, while the present-day plot survey yielded 305 species. A significant difference was found between the historical (60- to 160-year-old) and current species richness of the weed flora. The proportion of rare and threatened species decreased by 38.1%. Earth buildings are among the richest sources of archaeobotanical materials from the recent past. Thus, mudbrick constructions are extremely rich in plant materials, especially chaff, straw, fruits and seeds. Recovery of these remains enables us to gain a comprehensive insight into the contemporary floras of past settlements and their surroundings. Mudbricks from southwest Hungary which were 100–150 years old and were used there as traditional natural building materials, were examined in this research from an archaeobotanical point of view. Techniques were used that mostly come from modern seed bank research, and the most efficient processing methods were tested and further developed. Different flotation procedures were compared and the minimum sample volume was also determined. A new sodium chloride (common salt) flotation method was developed, providing a useful separation procedure for the recovery of plant remains and diaspores (seeds) from mudbrick. The effectiveness of sodium chloride is similar to other chemicals used in seed bank research, but much more economical. The minimum and optimum sample volumes are 2,500–3,500 cm3; these are necessary to recover most of the taxa preserved in the bricks. A trend in the recovery of different sized seeds was also observed, revealing that the recovery of smaller seeds was less successful. Using the sodium chloride method, more than 18,000 desiccated diaspores were recovered and identified from 212 kg of mudbrick samples, from the period between 1850 and 1930. A total of 249 taxa were identified, most of which are weedy taxa connected to cereal and ruderal weed plant communities.

Stachys palustris, well-known as marsh woundwort, is a perennial herb growing in wet environments of Europe. Its tubers, leaves and seeds are eaten raw or cooked. Alike other Stachys species, the plant is also used as a traditional remedy. Despite S. palustris has been consumed for centuries, little is known about its chemical constituents. In this work the main secondary metabolites of S. palustris from Hungary and France have been analysed. From the plant ethanolic extracts, ethanoid glucosides, isoscutellarein derivatives, caffeoyl-quinic acids and iridoids have been isolated and structurally characterized by NMR. The essential oils were analysed by GC/MS and showed (E)-phytol, fatty acids and carbonylic compounds as the most abundant compounds. The radical scavenging capacity of plant ethanolic extracts, as evaluated by the DPPH assay, was noteworthy, with IC50 values of 92.08 - 105.42 μg/ml.

The role was studied of multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms in tooth agenesis in the Hungarian population using a complex approach.Eight SNPs, PAX9 -912 C/T, PAX9 -1031 A/G, MSX1 3755 A/G, FGFR1 T/C rs881301, IRF6 T/C rs764093, AXIN2-8150 A/G, AXIN2-8434 A/G and AXIN2-30224 C/T, were studied in 192 hypodontia and 17 oligodontia cases and in 260 healthy volunteers. Case-control analysis was performed to test both allelic and genotypic associations as well as associations at the level of haplotypes. Multivariate exploratory Bayesian network-based multi-level analysis of relevance (BN-BMLA) as well as logistic regression analysis were performed.Conventional statistics showed that PAX9 SNP -912 C/T and the MSX1 SNP changed the incidence of hypodontia, although after Bonferroni correction for multiple hypothesis testing, the effects were only borderline tendencies. Using a statistical analysis better suited for handling multiple hypotheses, the BN-BMLA, PAX9 SNPs clearly showed a synergistic effect. This was confirmed by other multivariate analyses and it remained significant after corrections for multiple hypothesis testing (p0.0025). The PAX9-1031-A-PAX9-912-T haplotype was the most relevant combination causing hypodontia. Interaction was weaker between PAX9 and MSX1, while other SNPs had no joint effect on hypodontia.This complex analysis shows the important role of PAX9 and MSX1 SNPs and of their interactions in tooth agenesis, while IRF6, FGFR1 and AXIN2 SNPs had no detectable role in the Hungarian population. These results also reveal that risk factors in hypodontia need to be identified in various populations, since there is considerable variability among them.
