1. Eco-Friendly Waterborne Polyurethane Coating Modified with Ethylenediamine-Functionalized Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Anticorrosion Performance

Abstract: This study explores the potential of graphene oxide (GO) as an additive in waterborne polyurethane (WPU) resins to create eco-friendly coatings with enhanced anticorrosive properties. Traditionally, WPU’s hydrophilic nature has limited its use in corrosion-resistant coatings. We investigate the impact of incorporating various GO concentrations (0.01, 0.1, and 1.3 wt%) and functionalizing GO with ethylenediamine (EDA) on the development of anticorrosive coatings for carbon steel. It was observed, by potentiodynamic polarization analysis in a 3.5% NaCl solution, that the low GO content in the WPU matrix significantly improved anticorrosion properties, with the 0.01 wt% GO-EDA formulation showing exceptional performance, high Ecorr (−117.82 mV), low icorr (3.70 × 10−9 A cm−2), and an inhibition corrosion efficiency (η) of 99.60%. Raman imaging mappings revealed that excessive GO content led to agglomeration, creating pathways for corrosive species. In UV/condensation tests, the 0.01 wt% GO-EDA coating exhibited the most promising results, with minimal corrosion products compared to pristine WPU. The large lateral dimensions of GO sheets and the cross-linking facilitated by EDA enhanced the interfacial properties and dispersion within the WPU matrix, resulting in superior barrier properties and anticorrosion performance. This advancement underscores the potential of GO-based coatings for environmentally friendly corrosion protection.

Abstract: In this work, we present a detailed experimental study of pulse formation mechanism in an EDFL, hybridly mode-locked by use of a CVD monolayer graphene onto a D-shaped optical fiber and nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), under a large intracavity dispersion influence (up to 100 times) ranging from 12.3 to 1382 m cavity lengths. Analyzing the spectral evolution, temporal and soliton behaviors of the pulse, our results revealed the presence of four laser operating regimes with non-soliton and soliton formation from short to ultralong cavity lengths, all related to graphene/NPR nonlinearities, dispersion and soliton propagation influences.

3. Chronic Nicotine Exposure Alters Uninjured Tendon Vascularity and Viscoelasticity

Abstract: Background: Although nicotine and tobacco use are well established to have adverse health effects, the effects on tendons are less well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic nicotine exposure on Achilles tendon (AT) and supraspinatus tendon (SS) physiologic and mechanical properties in a rodent model. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 20) were exposed to either 0.9% saline or 36 mg/mL nicotine through an implantable osmotic pump for 12 weeks. At 12 weeks, the AT was imaged in vivo with contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CE-US) to assess vascularity. Bilateral AT and SS were then harvested for ex vivo biomechanical analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using Student t test and Mann Whitney U test. Results: AT CE-US demonstrated a significantly increased wash-in rate in the nicotine group compared to the saline group, indicating an increase in tissue perfusion rate in the nicotine group. AT percent stress relaxation, a measure of tendon viscoelasticity, was significantly increased in the nicotine group compared to the saline group. Similarly, there was a trend toward increased SS percent stress relaxation in the nicotine group compared to the saline group. No differences in other mechanical properties were observed. Conclusion: AT perfusion rate increased and both AT and SS viscoelasticity were altered with chronic nicotine exposure at a clinically relevant dose that models the average smoker in the United States (14 cigarettes per day). Further studies are necessary to link these properties with tendon degeneration and injury. Clinical Relevance: Chronic nicotine exposure affects tendon health. Patients should be counseled as such.

9. How Voters Respond to Currency Crises: Evidence From Turkey

Abstract: A burgeoning literature shows that international trade and migration shocks influence individuals’ political attitudes, but relatively little is known about how international financial shocks impact public opinion. This study examines how one prevalent type of international financial shock—currency crises—shapes mass political attitudes. I argue that currency crises reduce average citizens’ support for incumbent governments. I also expect voters’ concerns about their own pocketbooks to influence their response to currency crises. Original survey data from Turkey support these arguments. Exploiting exogenous variation in the currency’s value during the survey window, I show that currency depreciations strongly reduce support for the government. This effect is stronger among individuals that are more negatively affected by depreciation, and it is moderated by individuals’ perceptions of their personal economic situation. This evidence suggests that international financial shocks can strongly influence the opinions of average voters, and it provides further support for pocketbook theories.

Such studies represent a much-needed next step towards subregional and site-level prospection to support management, engagement and mitigation of the impacts of offshore development. However, these regional studies are largely absent in Australia. In this article, we build on the recent discovery of submerged archaeological sites in Western Australia and produce a novel regional-scale assessment of submerged archaeological and cultural landscape potential in the coastal and island regions of the Northern Territory. This area is of special significance in the peopling of Australia, containing some of the oldest dated archaeological evidence. We collate and synthesise regional data related to sea-level change, ethnography (e.g. oral traditions), geomorphology, and archaeology, also taking account of logistics and existing data availability to identify prospective areas for further study. We highlight the need for a coordinated national program of regional baseline studies to address a legacy of under-representation of submerged landscapes and provide vital baseline data for a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including researchers, policy makers, environmental and heritage managers, developers and Traditional Owners.

Abstract: Dockstore (https://dockstore.org/) is an open source platform for publishing, sharing, and finding bioinformatics tools and workflows. The platform has facilitated large-scale biomedical research collaborations by using cloud technologies to increase the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability (FAIR) of computational resources, thereby promoting the reproducibility of complex bioinformatics analyses. Dockstore supports a variety of source repositories, analysis frameworks, and language technologies to provide a seamless publishing platform for authors to create a centralized catalogue of scientific software. The ready-to-use packaging of hundreds of tools and workflows, combined with the implementation of interoperability standards, enables users to launch analyses across multiple environments. Dockstore is widely used, more than twenty-five high-profile organizations share analysis collections through the platform in a variety of workflow languages, including the Broad Institute's GATK best practice and COVID-19 workflows (WDL), nf-core workflows (Nextflow), the Intergalactic Workflow Commission tools (Galaxy), and workflows from Seven Bridges (CWL) to highlight just a few. 13. Ultrashort pulse generation in erbium-doped fiber lasers in South America: a historical review

Abstract: This paper reviews the scientific contributions of the last 30 years on erbium-doped fiber laser ultrashort pulse generation in South America. The focus is on contributions authored in South American institutions. It reveals a wide variety of laser cavities, ranging in length from a few centimeters to tens of kilometers, and optical pulses, from tens of femtoseconds to nanoseconds, with fully controlled average and peak powers. Furthermore, different approaches for ultrashort pulse generation using active (synchronous and asynchronous) and/or passive mode-locking techniques are discussed, as well as the employment of nonlinear optical phenomena (Kerr effect) and several two-dimensional nanomaterials as saturable absorbers, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphite, graphene oxide, reduced-graphene oxide, semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorus. Finally, the paper revisits and discusses several advances, important milestones, and records on ultrashort pulse generation in erbium-doped fiber lasers, with many essential outcomes attesting to the high quality of research carried out in South America in the field of ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract: This paper reviews the work carried out in the field of nonlinear optics in two-dimensional and ultrathin lamellar materials, with a special focus on contributions authored and co-authored by researchers affiliated with Latin American institutions. It is shown that important and impactful contributions have emerged from Latin America, which has a consolidated and active optics community. Nonlinear optical refraction, nonlinear optical absorption, and nonlinear frequency conversion in materials such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorus are among the reviewed themes.

Abstract: In this work, we present a detailed experimental study of pulse formation mechanism in an EDFL, hybridly mode-locked by use of a CVD monolayer graphene onto a D-shaped optical fiber and nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), under a large intracavity dispersion influence (up to 100 times) ranging from 12.3 to 1382 m cavity lengths. Analyzing the spectral evolution, temporal and soliton behaviors of the pulse, our results revealed the presence of four laser operating regimes with non-soliton and soliton formation from short to ultralong cavity lengths, all related to graphene/NPR nonlinearities, dispersion and soliton propagation influences.

Abstract: We present 2 cases of spontaneous index finger (IF) flexor tendon ruptures because of previously undiagnosed osteonecrosis (OA) of the capitate. Imaging revealed fragmentation of the capitate, and patients were treated with excision or fixation of the bony fragments with tendon repair. At the final follow-up, both patients had functional digital range of motion.OA of the capitate is relatively rare and may present as atraumatic (IF) flexor tendon ruptures because of attritional wear when associated with bony fragmentation.

Abstract: Organic/inorganic van der Waals heterojunctions formed by a combination of 2D materials with semiconductor polymer films enable the fabrication of new device architectures that are interesting for electronic and optoelectronic applications. Here, we investigated the charge-transfer dynamics at the interface between 2D layered franckeite (Fr) and two thiophene-based conjugated polymers (PFO-DBT and P3HT) from the resonantly core-excited electron. The unoccupied electronic states of PFO-DBT/Fr and P3HT/Fr heterojunctions were studied using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and resonant Auger (RAS) synchrotron-based spectroscopies. We found evidence of ultrafast (subfemtosecond charge-transfer times) interfacial electron delocalization pathways from specific electronic states. For the interface between the PFO-DBT polymer and exfoliated franckeite, the most efficient interfacial electron delocalization pathways were found through π*(S–N) and π*(S–C) electronic states corresponding to the benzothiadiazole and thiophene units. On the other hand, for the P3HT polymer, we found that electrons excited to π–π* and S1s–π*(C–C) electronic states of the P3HT polymer are the most affected by the presence of exfoliated franckeite and consequently are the main interfacial electron-transfer pathways in this heterojunction. Our results have important implications in understanding how ultrafast electron delocalization is taking place in organic/inorganic van der Waals heterojunctions, which is relevant information in designing new devices involving these systems.

Abstract: Purpose To investigate the natural history and genetic associations of drusenoid pigment epithelial detachment (DPED) associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Design Retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort study. Participants Of the 4203 Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) participants, 391 eyes (325 participants) had DPED without late AMD at the time of DPED detection. Genetic analyses included 120 white AREDS2 participants and 145 Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) participants with DPED. Methods Baseline and annual stereoscopic fundus photographs were graded centrally to detect DPED, a well-defined yellow elevated mound of confluent drusen ≥433 μm in diameter, and to evaluate progression rates to late AMD: geographic atrophy (GA) and neovascular (NV)-AMD. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (CFH [rs10611670], C3 [rs2230199], CFI [rs10033900], C2/CFB [rs114254831], ARMS2 [rs10490924]) and genetic risk score (GRS) group were investigated for association with DPED development. Kaplan–Meier analyses and multivariable proportional hazard regressions were performed. Main Outcome Measures Progression rates to late AMD and decrease of ≥3 lines in visual acuity (VA) from the time of DPED detection; association of rate of DPED development with genotype. Results Mean (standard deviation [SD]) follow-up time from DPED detection was 4.7 (0.9) years. DPED was associated with increased risk of progression to late AMD (hazard ratio [HR], 2.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.98–2.82; P Conclusions This study replicates the results of previous natural history studies of eyes with DPED including the high rates of progression to late AMD and vision loss (regardless of progression to late AMD). The genetic associations are consistent with genes associated with AMD progression.

Abstract: Purpose To analyze the prevalence, incidence, and clinical characteristics of eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including clinical and genetic factors affecting enlargement. Design Prospective cohort study within a controlled clinical trial. Participants Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) participants, aged 50–85 years. Methods Baseline and annual stereoscopic color fundus photographs were evaluated for GA presence and area. Analyses included GA prevalence and incidence rates, Kaplan-Meier rates, mixed-model regression, and multivariable analysis of the square root of GA, area adjusted for covariates, including clinical/imaging characteristics and genotype. Main Outcome Measures (1) Presence or development of GA; (2) change in the square root of GA area over time. Results At baseline, 517 eyes (6.2%) of 411 participants (9.8%) had pre-existing GA (without neovascular AMD), with the following characteristics: 33% central, 67% noncentral; and the following configurations: 36% small, 26% solid/unifocal, 24% multifocal, 9% horseshoe/ring, and 6% indeterminate. Of the remaining 6530 eyes at risk, 1099 eyes (17.3%) of 883 participants developed incident GA without prior neovascular disease during mean follow-up of 4.4 years. The Kaplan-Meier rate of incident GA was 19% of eyes at 5 years. In eyes with incident GA, 4-year risk of subsequent neovascular AMD was 29%. In eyes with incident noncentral GA, 4-year risk of central involvement was 57%. GA enlargement rate (following square root transformation) was similar in eyes with pre-existing GA (0.29 mm/year; 95% confidence interval 0.27–0.30) and incident GA (0.28 mm/year; 0.27–0.30). In the combined group, GA enlargement was significantly faster with noncentrality, multifocality, intermediate baseline size, and bilateral GA (P Conclusions Analyses of AREDS2 data on natural history of GA provide representative data on GA evolution and enlargement. GA enlargement, which was influenced by lesion features, was relentless, resulting in rapid central vision loss. The genetic variants associated with faster enlargement were partially distinct from those associated with risk of incident GA. These findings are relevant to further investigations of GA pathogenesis and clinical trial planning.

Abstract: Using different samples of mechanically exfoliated graphene as saturable absorber in Erbium-doped fiber laser, we identified a transition in the mode-locking starting mechanism from non-self-starting (with monolayer or bilayer graphene) to self-starting (with trilayer or multilayer graphene) which is a strong indicative of fast-to-slow saturable-absorption response dependence on the number of graphene layers.

Abstract: The Myanmar military has dominated that complex country for most of the period since independence in 1948. The fourth coup of 1 February 2021 was the latest by the military to control those aspects of society it deemed essential to its own interests, and its perception of state interests. The military's institutional power was variously maintained by rule by decree, through political parties it founded and controlled, and through constitutional provisions it wrote that could not be amended without its approval. This fourth coup seems a product of personal demands for power between Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Aung San Suu Kyi, and the especially humiliating defeat of the military-backed party at the hands of the National League for Democracy in the November 2020 elections. The violent and bloody suppression of widespread demonstrations continues, compromise seems unlikely, and the previous diarchic governance will not return. Myanmar's political and economic future is endangered and suppression will only result in future outbreaks of political frustration.

Abstract: Global habitat deterioration of marine ecosystems has led to a need for active interventions to halt or reverse the loss of ecological function. Restoration has historically been a key tool to reverse habitat loss and restore functions, but the extent to which this will be sufficient under future climates is uncertain. Emerging genetic technologies now provide the ability for restoration to proactively match adaptability of target species to predicted future environmental conditions, which opens up the possibility of boosting resistance to future stress in degraded and threatened habitats. As such, the choice of whether to restore to historical baselines or anticipate the future remains a key decision that will influence restoration success in the face of environmental and climate change. Here, we present an overview of the different motives for restoration – to recover or revive lost or degraded habitats to extant or historical states, or to reinforce or redefine for future conditions. We focus on the genetic and adaptive choices that underpin each option and subsequent consequences for restoration success. These options span a range of possible trajectories, technological advances and societal acceptability, and represent a framework for progressing restoration of marine habitat forming species into the future. Abstract: We present the droplet method for liquid phase exfoliated reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) and black phosphorus (BP) saturable absorbers fabrication. By using this fast and powerful technique, nanomaterials/polymer-based films were directly transferred to optical fiber end-face and used as all-fiber saturable absorbers in an Erbium-doped fiber laser. As results, spectrum bandwidth of 7.30 nm and pulses as short as 570 fs could be generated, proving the reliability, practicability and robustness of this method for mode-locking applications.

Abstract: PURPOSE: Assess systemic vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) levels after treatment with intravitreous aflibercept, bevacizumab or ranibizumab. DESIGN: Comparative-effectiveness trial with participants randomly assigned to 2-mg aflibercept, 1.25-mg bevacizumab, or 0.3-mg ranibizumab following a retreatment algorithm. PARTICIPANTS: Participants with available plasma samples (N=436) METHODS: Plasma samples were collected before injections at baseline, 4-week, 52-week and 104-week visits. In a pre-planned secondary analysis, systemic free-VEGF levels from an ELISA immunoassay were compared across anti-VEGF agents and correlated with systemic side effects. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Changes in the natural log (ln) of plasma VEGF levels. RESULTS: Baseline free-VEGF levels were similar across all 3 groups. At 4 weeks, mean ln(VEGF) changes were −0.30±0.61, −0.31±0.54, −0.02±0.44 pg/ml for the aflibercept, bevacizumab, and ranibizumab groups, respectively. Abstract: For the first time, we report a femtosecond mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) by using mechanically exfoliated graphite deposited onto a D-shaped optical fiber. The exfoliated graphite flakes were deposited onto a stacked polyvinyl alcohol/polymethyl methacrylate thick layers, and then transferred directly to the polished surface of the D-shaped optical fiber. The characterization of the exfoliated graphite sample was performed by using optical microscope and Raman spectroscopy. By measuring its polarization performance, polarization relative extinction ratio about 5.30 dB (70%) was obtained, which resulted in the broadest bandwidth of 21 nm and the shortest pulse duration of 220 fs generation as saturable absorber (SA) into an EDFL cavity. For our knowledge, these are the best mode-locking performances ever reported in the literature for all-fiber-based graphite SA in EDFL.

Abstract: We present a study about the influence of saturable absorbers single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) diameter on the passive mode-locking Erbium doped fiber laser performance. We used several samples of CNT with different mean diameters (from 0.8 to 1.4 nm) and distributions to fabricated CNT/polymer films. Films with 1.0 nm mean diameter CNT showed best results in terms of larger laser bandwidths and shorter pulse durations, compared to the other CNT samples used in our experiments. This result is due to the fact that 1.0 nm diameter CNT absorption energy gap (∼0.8 eV) is close to the photon energy of operating Erbium-doped fiber laser wavelength (∼1557 nm). Laser bandwidths up to 8.7 nm and pulse durations as short as 0.55 ps were obtained.

Abstract: We present a detailed analysis of a nanosecond-pulse single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) passively mode-locked O-band Raman fiber lasers. As gain medium, single mode fiber (SMF) and highly nonlinear Raman gain were used at three different experimental setups. By incorporating 1.0 nm mean diameter SWCNT as saturable absorbers (SA) at 2.3 km SMF long-length gain medium setup, soliton-like spectrum followed by nanosecond high chirped pulse was observed at cavity fundamental repetition rate. In order to shorter the chirped pulse, intracavity anomalous dispersion was introduced with normal dispersion shift fiber (DSF) lengths and pulse duration decreased from 4.20 to 2.30 ns. By using highly nonlinear Raman gain medium in the O-band Raman laser configuration, the laser generated clean and well-defined nanosecond high chirped pulses, achieving pulse duration as short as 2.30 ns with 230 m gain medium length. Also, we could estimate the picosecond pulse duration region as a function of gain medium length of this laser and compared with SMF pulse shortening curve. As results, the lasers presented similar tendencies, indicating a strong influence of nonlinearities and dispersion in the pulse duration shortening.

41. Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy: A Thorough Examination of a Harmful Obstetrical Syndrome and Its Counterparts

Abstract: Diagnosed in one of every 20,000 deliveries, acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) was considered to be a deadly disease for many years. However, advancements in the clinical and surgical management of pregnant mothers have lead to a drastic decrease in maternal morbidity and mortality. The corresponding case recounts a 23-year-old gravida 2 para 1 (G2P1) at 38 weeks gestational age (GA) with no relevant past medical or family medical history that presented to the emergency department (ED) with a five-day history of nausea, protracted vomiting, hypertension, and new-onset headache. Being late in the third trimester, preeclampsia was the top differential diagnosis while awaiting additional laboratory work-up. The work-up later revealed elevated liver function tests and bilirubin plus an abnormal coagulation profile with low fibrinogen. The differential was then shifted to AFLP versus hemolysis-elevated liver enzymes-low platelets (HELLP) syndrome. The patient was promptly transferred to the labor and delivery unit for close monitoring and delivery planning. Upon cervical examination, the patient was not dilated and was therefore determined to be remote from delivery. A cesarean section was performed and the mother was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) post-operatively to optimize management of her coagulopathy. Her abnormal laboratory studies normalized by post-operative day four and she was discharged home with her newborn.

Abstract: We report on the optical third harmonic generation in mechanically exfoliated franckeite, a natural Van der Waals heterostructure. Results show a nonlinear signal that is anisotropic and 1300-1500 times stronger than that of monolayer graphene.

Abstract: We present a study on the characterization and quality evaluation of all-fiber chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene saturable absorber samples for Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) mode locking. Optical fiber end faces covered by CVD graphene were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, and classification criteria related to graphene Raman bands properties were adopted in order to evaluate samples quality. The analysis revealed that for all samples, the fiber core was 100% covered by graphene, with 88% average monolayer graphene coverage, and 82% low defect graphene coverage. Graphene samples were used as saturable absorbers in EDFL, and soliton-like pulses as short as 599 fs were generated, with average pulse duration of 620 ± 10 fs among all samples.

Abstract: The San Cristóbal Galapagos tortoise, Chelonoidis chathamensis, is native to San Cristóbal, the most eastern and oldest island of the Galapagos Archipelago. Although numerous studies on the ecology, behavior and genetics of Galapagos tortoises have been published, little is known about the health status of these animals. Here we report blood values from clinically healthy tortoises., As part of a planned introduction of captive Galapagos tortoises (Chelonoidis chathamensis) to the San Cristóbal highland farms, our veterinary team performed thorough physical examinations and health assessments of 32 tortoises. Blood samples were collected for packed cell volume (PCV), total solids (TS), white blood cell count (WBC) differential, estimated WBC and a biochemistry panel including lactate. In some cases not all of the values were obtainable but most of the tortoises have full complements of results. Despite a small number of minor abnormalities this was a healthy group of mixed age and sex tortoises that had been maintained with appropriate husbandry. This work establishes part of a scientific and technical database to provide qualitative and quantitative information when establishing sustainable development strategies aimed at the conservation of Galapagos tortoises.
