Open Access funding provided by Max Planck Society., Context. Supermassive black holes in the centres of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) can produce collimated relativistic outflows (jets). Magnetic fields are thought to play a key role in the formation and collimation of these jets, but the details are much debated. Aims. We study the innermost jet morphology and magnetic field strength in the AGN 3C 345 with an unprecedented resolution using images obtained within the framework of the key science programme on AGN polarisation of the Space VLBI mission RadioAstron. Methods. We observed the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 345 at 1.6 GHz on 2016 March 30 with RadioAstron and 18 ground-based radio telescopes in full polarisation mode. Results. Our images, in both total intensity and linear polarisation, reveal a complex jet structure at 300 μas angular resolution, corresponding to a projected linear scale of about 2 pc or a few thousand gravitational radii. We identify the synchrotron self-absorbed core at the jet base and find the brightest feature in the jet 1.5 mas downstream of the core. Several polarised components appear in the Space VLBI images that cannot be seen from ground array-only images. Except for the core, the electric vector position angles follow the local jet direction, suggesting a magnetic field perpendicular to the jet. This indicates the presence of plane perpendicular shocks in these regions. Additionally, we infer a minimum brightness temperature at the largest (u, v)-distances of 1.1 × 1012 K in the source frame, which is above the inverse Compton limit and an order of magnitude larger than the equipartition value. This indicates locally efficient injection or re-acceleration of particles in the jet to counter the inverse Compton cooling or the geometry of the jet creates significant changes in the Doppler factor, which has to be > 11 to explain the high brightness temperatures. © F. The largest Key Science Program of the RadioAstron space VLBI mission is a survey of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The main goal of the survey is to measure and study the brightness of AGN cores in order to better understand the physics of their emission while taking interstellar scattering into consideration. In this paper we present detection statistics for observations on ground-space baselines of a complete sample of radio-strong AGN at the wavelengths of 18, 6, and 1.3 cm. Two-thirds of them are indeed detected by RadioAstron and are found to contain extremely compact, tens to hundreds of $\mu$as structures within their cores., Comment: Accepted to the Advances in Space Research special issue "High-resolution Space-Borne Radio Astronomy"

Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) is a science education partnership among NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Lewis Center for Educational Research (LCER), offering unique opportunities for K -12 students and their teachers. As part of a long-term Jupiter synchrotron radiation (JSR) flux density monitoring program, LCER has been carrying out Jupiter observations with some student participation. In this paper we present the results of processed data sets observed between March 6, 2015 and April 6 2018. The data are divided into 5 epochs, grouped by time. We derive JSR beaming curves at different epochs and Earth declinations. We present a comparison of the observed beaming curves with those derived from most recent models for the radiation belts. Our results show an increasing trend of the JSR flux density which seem consistent with the models for the magnetospheric solar wind interactions., Comment: 24 pages; 9 figures To be published in PASP

The high brightness temperatures, $T_\mathrm{b}\gtrsim 10^{13}$ K, detected in several active galactic nuclei by RadioAstron space VLBI observations challenge theoretical limits. Refractive scattering by the interstellar medium may affect such measurements. We quantify the scattering properties and the sub-mas scale source parameters for the quasar B0529+483. Using RadioAstron correlated flux density measurements at 1.7, 4.8, and 22 GHz on projected baselines up to 240,000 km we find two characteristic angular scales in the quasar core, about 100 $\mu$as and 10 $\mu$as. Some indications of scattering substructure are found. Very high brightness temperatures, $T_\mathrm{b}\geq 10^{13}$ K, are estimated at 4.8 GHz and 22 GHz even taking into account the refractive scattering. Our findings suggest a clear dominance of the particle energy density over the magnetic field energy density in the core of this quasar., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

This paper describes a radio astronomy programfor schools, the Goldstone-AppleValley Radio Telescope,GAVRT. The GAVRT program is designed to bring the inspiration and enthusiasm to a younger generation of teachers and children who learn about science by doing real science, just as Iosif Shklovsky brought to an older generation.

The RadioAstron ground-space interferometer provides the highest angular resolution achieved now in astronomy. The detection of interferometric fringes from quasars with this angular resolution on baselines of 100–200 thousand km suggests the brightness temperatures which exceed the Compton limit by two orders of magnitude. Polarimetric measurements on ground-space baselines have revealed fine structure testifying to recollimation shocks on scales of 100–250 μas and a helical magnetic field near the base of radio emission in BL Lacertae. Substructure within a the scattering disk of pulsar emission on interferometer baselines (from 60000 to 250000 km) was discovered. This substructure is produced by action of the interstellar interferometer with an effective baseline of about 1 AU and the effective angular resolution of better than 1 μas. Diameters of scattering disks were measured for several pulsars, and distances to diffusing screens were evaluated. The ground-space observations of sources of the maser radiation in lines of water and hydroxyl have shown that the maser sources in star-forming regions remain unresolved on baselines, which considerably exceed the Earth diameter. These very compact and bright features with angular sizes of about 20–60 μas correspond to linear sizes of about 5–10 million km (several solar diameters).

We have conducted the first systematic search for interday variability in a large sample of extragalactic radio sources at 15 GHz. From the sample of 1158 radio-selected blazars monitored over a $\sim$10 year span by the Owens Valley Radio Observatory 40-m telescope, we identified 20 sources exhibiting significant flux density variations on 4-day timescales. The sky distribution of the variable sources is strongly dependent on the line-of-sight Galactic H$\alpha$ intensities from the Wisconsin H$\alpha$ Mapper Survey, demonstrating the contribution of interstellar scintillation (ISS) to their interday variability. 21% of sources observed through sight-lines with H$\alpha$ intensities larger than 10 rayleighs exhibit significant ISS persistent over the $\sim$10 year period. The fraction of scintillators is potentially larger when considering less significant variables missed by our selection criteria, due to ISS intermittency. This study demonstrates that ISS is still important at 15 GHz, particularly through strongly scattered sight-lines of the Galaxy. Of the 20 most significant variables, 11 are observed through the Orion-Eridanus superbubble, photoionized by hot stars of the Orion OB1 association. The high-energy neutrino source TXS0506$+$056 is observed through this region, so ISS must be considered in any interpretation of its short-term radio variability. J0616$-$1041 appears to exhibit large $\sim$20% interday flux density variations, comparable in magnitude to that of the very rare class of extreme, intrahour scintillators that includes PKS0405$-$385, J1819$+$3845 and PKS1257$-$326; this needs to be confirmed by higher cadence follow-up observations., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The RadioAstron ground–space interferometer has been used to measure the angular sizes of the scattering disks of the three distant pulsars B1641–45, B1749–28, and B1933+16. The observations were carried out with the participation of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope; two 32-m telescopes at Torun, Poland and Svetloe, Russia (the latter being one antenna of the KVAZAR network); the Saint Croix VLBA antenna; the Arecibo radio telescope; the Parkes, Narrabri (ATCA), Mopra, Hobart, and Ceduna Australian radio telescopes; and the Hartebeesthoek radio telescope in South Africa. The full widths at half maximum of the scattering disks were 27 mas at 1668 MHz for B1641–45, 0.5 mas at 1668 MHz for B1749–28, and 12.3 at 316 MHz and 0.84 mas at 1668 MHz for B1933+16. The characteristic time scales for scatter-broadening of the pulses on inhomogeneities in the interstellar plasma τsc were also measured for these pulsars using various methods. Joint knowledge of the size of the scattering disk and the scatter-broadening time scale enables estimation of the distance to the effective scattering screen d. For B1641–45, d = 3.0 kpc for a distance to the pulsar D = 4.9 kpc, and for B1749–28, d = 0.95 kpc for D = 1.3 kpc. Observations of B1933+16 were carried out simultaneously at 316 and 1668 MHz. The positions of the screen derived using the measurements at the two frequencies agree: d 1 = 2.6 and d 2 = 2.7 kpc, for a distance to the pulsar of 3.7 kpc. Two screens were detected for this pulsar from an analysis of parabolic arcs in the secondary dynamic spectrum at 1668 MHz, at 1.3 and 3.1 kpc. The scattering screens for two of the pulsars are identified with real physical objects located along the lines of sight toward the pulsars: G339.1–04 (B1641–45) and G0.55–0.85 (B1749–28).

We investigate the relationship between 5 GHz interstellar scintillation (ISS) and 15 GHz intrinsic variability of compact, radio-selected AGNs drawn from the Microarcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability (MASIV) Survey and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) blazar monitoring program. We discover that the strongest scintillators at 5 GHz (modulation index, $m_5 \geq 0.02$) all exhibit strong 15 GHz intrinsic variability ($m_{15} \geq 0.1$). This relationship can be attributed mainly to the mutual dependence of intrinsic variability and ISS amplitudes on radio core compactness at $\sim 100\, \mu$as scales, and to a lesser extent, on their mutual dependences on source flux density, arcsec-scale core dominance and redshift. However, not all sources displaying strong intrinsic variations show high amplitude scintillation, since ISS is also strongly dependent on Galactic line-of-sight scattering properties. This observed relationship between intrinsic variability and ISS highlights the importance of optimizing the observing frequency, cadence, timespan and sky coverage of future radio variability surveys, such that these two effects can be better distinguished to study the underlying physics. For the full MASIV sample, we find that Fermi-detected gamma-ray loud sources exhibit significantly higher 5 GHz ISS amplitudes than gamma-ray quiet sources. We report new radio interferometric observations of the quadruple pre-main-sequence (PMS) system ABD oradus. From these observations, combined with existing VLT near-infrared relative astrometry, we have refined the estimates of the dynamical masses of the system. In particular, we find component masses of 0.86 ± 0.09M⊙ and 0.090 ± 0.003M⊙ for ABD or A and ABD or C, respectively. These dynamical masses, coupled with temperatures and luminosities, allow for comparison with theoretical stellar models. The case of ABDorC, in terms of calibration of evolutionary models of low-mass young stars has been widely reported in previous studies. In this contribution, we compare the measured properties of ABDorA with several solar-composition models for PMS stars. The models used in this comparison predict the dynamical mass to within the quoted uncertainties.

We present results from a multiwavelength study of the blazar PKS 1954-388 at radio, UV, X-ray, and gamma-ray energies. A RadioAstron observation at 1.66 GHz in June 2012 resulted in the detection of interferometric fringes on baselines of 6.2 Earth-diameters. This suggests a source frame brightness temperature of greater than 2x10^12 K, well in excess of both equipartition and inverse Compton limits and implying the existence of Doppler boosting in the core. An 8.4 GHz TANAMI VLBI image, made less than a month after the RadioAstron observations, is consistent with a previously reported superluminal motion for a jet component. Flux density monitoring with the Australia Telescope Compact Array confirms previous evidence for long-term variability that increases with observing frequency. A search for more rapid variability revealed no evidence for significant day-scale flux density variation. The ATCA light-curve reveals a strong radio flare beginning in late 2013 which peaks higher, and earlier, at higher frequencies. Comparison with the Fermi gamma-ray light-curve indicates this followed ~9 months after the start of a prolonged gamma-ray high-state -- a radio lag comparable to that seen in other blazars. The multiwavelength data are combined to derive a Spectral Energy Distribution, which is fitted by a one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) model with the addition of external Compton (EC) emission., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We have completed a Chandra snapshot survey of 54 radio jets that are extended on arcsec scales. These are associated with flat spectrum radio quasars spanning a redshift range z=0.3 to 2.1. X-ray emission is detected from the jet of approximately 60% of the sample objects. We assume minimum energy and apply conditions consistent with the original Felten-Morrison calculations in order to estimate the Lorentz factors and the apparent Doppler factors. The discovery of the first quasar 3C 273 led directly to the discovery of their variability at optical and radio wavelengths. We review the radio variability observations, in particular the variability found at frequencies below 1 GHz, as well as those exhibiting intra-day variability (IDV) at cm wavelengths. Observations have shown that IDV arises principally from scintillation caused by scattering in the ionized interstellar medium of our Galaxy. The sensitivity of interstellar scintillation towards source angular sizes has provided a powerful tool for studying the most compact components of radio-loud AGN at microarcsecond and milliarcsecond scale resolution.

Inverse Compton cooling limits the brightness temperature of the radiating plasma to a maximum of $10^{11.5}$ K. Relativistic boosting can increase its observed value, but apparent brightness temperatures much in excess of $10^{13}$ K are inaccessible using ground-based very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at any wavelength. We present observations of the quasar 3C273, made with the space VLBI mission RadioAstron on baselines up to 171,000 km, which directly reveal the presence of angular structure as small as 26 $\mu$as (2.7 light months) and brightness temperature in excess of $10^{13}$ K. These measurements challenge our understanding of the non-thermal continuum emission in the vicinity of supermassive black holes and require a much higher Doppler factor than what is determined from jet apparent kinematics., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table; accepted by the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Earth-space interferometry with RadioAstron provides the highest direct angular resolution ever achieved in astronomy at any wavelength. RadioAstron detections of the classic quasar 3C273 on interferometric baselines up to 171,000 km suggest brightness temperatures exceeding expected limits from the "inverse-Compton catastrophe" by two orders of magnitude. We show that at 18 cm, these estimates most probably arise from refractive substructure introduced by scattering in the interstellar medium. We use the scattering properties to estimate an intrinsic brightness temperature of 7*10^12 K, which is consistent with expected theoretical limits, but which is ~15 times lower than estimates that neglect substructure. At 6.2 cm, the substructure influences the measured values appreciably but gives an estimated brightness temperature that is comparable to models that do not account for the substructure. At 1.35 cm, the substructure does not affect the extremely high inferred brightness temperatures, in excess of 10^13 K. We also demonstrate that for a source having a Gaussian surface brightness profile, a single long-baseline estimate of refractive substructure determines an absolute minimum brightness temperature, if the scattering properties along a given line of sight are known, and that this minimum accurately approximates the apparent brightness temperature over a wide range of total flux densities., 6 Pages, 3 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present Chandra X-ray imaging of a flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like structure. X-rays are detected from 59% of 56 jets. No counterjets were detected. The core spectra are fitted by power law spectra with photon index $\Gamma_x$ whose distribution is consistent with a normal distribution with mean 1.61{+0.04}{-0.05} and dispersion 0.15{+0.04}{-0.03}. We show that the distribution of $\alpha_{rx}$, the spectral index between the X-ray and radio band jet fluxes, fits a Gaussian with mean 0.974 $\pm$ 0.012 and dispersion 0.077 $\pm$ 0.008. We test the model in which kpc-scale X-rays result from inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons off the jet's relativistic electrons (the IC-CMB model). In the IC-CMB model, a quantity Q computed from observed fluxes and the apparent size of the emission region depends on redshift as $(1+z)^{3+\alpha}$. We fit $Q \propto (1+z)^{a}$, finding $a = 0.88 \pm 0.90$ and reject at 99.5% confidence the hypothesis that the average $\alpha_{rx}$ depends on redshift in the manner expected in the IC-CMB model. This conclusion is mitigated by lack of detailed knowledge of the emission region geometry, which requires deeper or higher resolution X-ray observations. Furthermore, if the IC-CMB model is valid for X-ray emission from kpc-scale jets, then the jets must decelerate on average: bulk Lorentz factors should drop from about 15 to 2-3 between pc and kpc scales. We present the results of a large-scale 5-GHz Very Large Array (VLA) survey of the northern sky searching for sources that exhibit intraday variability (IDV). The observations were made over four epochs, each of 3 days in January, May and September 2002 and January 2003. The objective is to obtain a large sample of IDV sources in order to derive reliable statistics of the microarcsecond properties of the source population and the scattering properties of the interstellar medium.

Circinus X-1 has recently returned to a state of strong radio flaring. Here we report on the first VLBI observations, and detection, undertaken in the 25 years since the 1975–1985 period of strong recurrent flaring activity.We detected Circinus X-1 with the first observations conducted by a recently developed Southern hemisphere e-VLBI array, at both 1.6 and 8.4 GHz, over a three-day period. At 1.6 GHz, the compact source has a total flux density of 11 mJy and a size of 60 ± 15 mas (Gaussian model full width at half maximum). At 8.4 GHz, the compact source is less than 60 mas. The size variation with frequency is consistent with a broadened image due to scattering in the turbulent, ionized interstellar medium of our Galaxy. However, these size measurements appear inconsistent with the λ2.2 variation expected for strong interstellar scattering and previous VLBI observations made at 2.3 GHz in the early 1980s. To explain this apparent inconsistency, we suggest that Circinus X-1 supports a weak, non-varying component of 35 mas extent (175 au at 5 kpc distance), corresponding to compact structure in the extended radio nebula. No significant variation in the flux density at 1.6 GHz is evident between two observations 24 h apart. No jet-like structures are evident on scales of tens of mas, simply a scatter broadened source, presumably coincident with the suggested neutron star in the binary system.

Milliarcsecond-accurate radio positions in the International Celestial Reference Frame for 34 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. The positions are derived from Mark III/IV very long baseline interferometry observations made between 2004 August and 2006 April using radio telescopes located in Australia, South Africa, and Hawaii. Positions for 7 of the 34 sources have been reported previously by us but are reported here with significantly improved accuracy. These results supplement an ongoing project to increase the sky density of southern hemisphere sources in order to better define the International Celestial Reference Frame and to provide additional phase reference sources with accurate positions for use in astrophysical observations. Positions for all 34 sources are south of δ = -20° (positions for nine of the sources are south of δ = -60°) and have average formal uncertainties of 0.23 mas in α cos δ and 0.35 mas in δ.

Multiwavelength Very Long Baseline Array observations of a sample of 49 extragalactic radio sources selected from the Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability survey are presented. These observations are intended to provide a sizeable, uniform data set for the investigation of angular broadening of scintillating sources. These data will be used to compare and contrast the scattering behavior of scintillating and nonscintillating radio sources in subsequent analysis. We confirm earlier analyses that found scintillating sources to be more core-dominated than nonscintillating sources.

We discuss the physical properties of four quasar jets imaged with the Chandra X-ray Observatory in the course of a survey for X-ray emission from radio jets. These objects have sufficient counts to study their spatially resolved properties, even in the 5 ks survey observations. We have acquired Australia Telescope Compact Array data with resolution matching Chandra. We have searched for optical emission with Magellan, with sub-arcsecond resolution. The radio to X-ray spectral energy distribution for most of the individual regions indicates against synchrotron radiation from a single-component electron spectrum. We therefore explore the consequences of assuming that the X-ray emission is the result of inverse Compton scattering on the cosmic microwave background. If particles and magnetic fields are near minimum energy density in the jet rest frames, then the emitting regions must be relativistically beamed, even at distances of order 500 kpc from the quasar. We estimate the magnetic field strengths, relativistic Doppler factors, and kinetic energy flux as a function of distance from the quasar core for two or three distinct regions along each jet. We develop, for the first time, estimates in the uncertainties in these parameters, recognizing that they are dominated by our assumptions in applying the standard synchrotron minimum energy conditions. The kinetic power is comparable with, or exceeds, the quasar radiative luminosity, implying that the jets are a significant factor in the energetics of the accretion process powering the central black hole. We are undertaking a series of geodetic VLBI observations between the Syowa Station 11-m antenna in Antarctica, and the 26-m antennas in Hobart Tasmania and Hartebeesthoek South Africa. These observations are the beginning of our campaign to monitor the motion and stability of the Antarctic plate. We describe here the results of the first year's observations made during the southern summer and winter of 1998. Two mutually incompatible recording systems, K4 and S2, are used. The Mitaka FX Correlator was used to correlate these data. By using software called CALC3/MSOLV, the mean position of the antenna's geodetic reference point was found to be X=1766194.152±0.006m, Y=1460410.923±0.005m and Z=- 5932273.329±0.015m at the epoch of 1998.9 in the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 2000 (ITRF2000) system. From a comparison with measurements made with other space geodetic techniques we estimate that our results have typical uncertainties of no more than 2 to 3cm in each coordinate.

The first successful geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations to Antarctica were made on baselines from Syowa Station (Antarctica) to Tidbinbilla (Australia) and to Kashima (Japan) in January 1990. Regular geodetic experiments started in 1998 with the installation of a permanent VLBI terminal at Syowa Station. These observations are conducted at the standard geodetic VLBI frequencies of 2.3 and 8.4 GHz, S- and X-Bands. In the first year, the 11-m multipurpose antenna at Syowa Station observed together with the 26-m radio telescope of the University of Tasmania in Australia and the 26-m radio telescope of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory in South Africa. From 1999, the experiments were expanded to also include the O’Higgins Station in Antarctica, Fortaleza in Brazil and Kokee on Hawaii. From 1999 until the end of 2003, 25 observing sessions have been reduced and analyzed using the CALC/SOLVE geodetic VLBI data reduction package. The results show that the horizontal baseline of Syowa-Hobart is increasing at the rate of 57.0±1.9 mm/year. The baseline Syowa-Hartebeesthoek is also increasing, but at the lower rate of 9.8±1.9 mm/year. The VLBI result of 2.0±3.1 mm/year and the GPS result of −1.9±0.7 mm/year for the Syowa-O’Higgins horizontal baseline support the hypothesis of one rigid Antarctic plate without intra-plate deformation, which is consistent with the NNR-NUVEL-1A global plate motion model. The location of the Euler pole of the Antarctic plate by VLBI is estimated as 59.7°S and 62.6°E with a rotation rate of 0.190 deg/Myr, while that by GPS in our study is estimated as 60.6°S and 42.2°E with a rotation rate of 0.221 deg/Myr. These pole positions are slightly different to that implied by the NNR-NUVEL-1A model of 63.0°S and 64.2°E with a rotation rate of 0.238 deg/Myr. VLBI observations over a longer time span may resolve small discrepancy of current plate motion from the NNR-NUVEL-1A model. The consistency of the VLBI coordinates with the GPS coordinates at Syowa Station, after correction for the local tie vector components between the two reference markers, is also discussed.

Interstellar scintillation has been conclusively demonstrated to be the principal cause of the intraday variability (IDV) observed in the centimeter-wavelength emission of many active galactic nuclei. A few sources show large amplitude modulation in their flux density on a timescale of hours. However, the majority of IDV sources exhibit variability on timescales of a day or more. Some sources have been found to show an annual cycle in the pattern of their variability. Such an annual cycle occurs because the relative speeds of the Earth and the interstellar medium change as the Earth orbits the Sun. To search for these annual variations, as well as to follow the source evolution, requires a dedicated instrument; the necessary amounts of observing time are beyond the capability of the National Facility instruments. Here we describe the scientific motivation for and present an outline of the COSMIC (Continuous Single-Dish Monitoring of Intraday Variability at Ceduna) project, which uses the University of Tasmania's 30 m diameter radio telescope at Ceduna, which has been monitoring the flux density of a number of the stronger southern scintillators at 6.65 GHz since 2003 March.

PKS 1257—326 is one of three quasars known to show unusually large and rapid, intra-hour intensity variations, as a result of scintillation in the turbulent Galactic interstellar medium. We have measured time delays in the variability pattern arrival times at the VLA and the ATCA, as well as an annual cycle in the time-scale of variability for this source. Results of the two-station time delay observations are presented here. Implications for the scintillation of this source are discussed in the light of these results, together with results from two years of monitoring with the ATCA.

Milliarcsecond-accurate radio positions for 25 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. These positions are derived from Mark III Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations made between 2003 September and 2004 May on the intra-Australia baseline connecting Hobart, Tasmania and Parkes, New South Wales. The results presented here represent an ongoing program intended to increase the number of phase-reference sources with accurate positions in the southern hemisphere for use in astrophysical observations. The positions for all but 1 of the 25 sources are south of δ = -45° and have average formal uncertainties of 3 mas in α cos δ and 2 mas in δ. As the reported positions are in the frame of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF), the results reported here can also be used to increase the sky density of southern hemisphere ICRF sources, although with reduced accuracy.

We compare the milliarcsecond-scale morphology of scintillating and nonscintillating sources. The scintillating sources are drawn from those flat-spectrum extragalactic radio sources discovered, by the Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability Survey, to have flux density variability at 5 GHz on timescales from hours to days. Intrinsic source structure information is obtained from previously published and/or publicly available 8.4 GHz Very Long Baseline Array images. A sample of low flux density (Sν=5 GHz < 0.3 Jy) scintillating sources was compared with a sample of high flux density (Sν=5 GHz ~ 1 Jy) scintillators, as well as a sample of high flux density nonscintillators. All source samples meet the selection criteria of the Micro-Arcsecond Scintillation-Induced Variability Survey, thus ensuring that all three source samples are suitable for comparative study. We find that all scintillating sources (both low and high flux density samples) are significantly more core dominated than nonscintillating sources. Further, the overall source size of the scintillating sources is significantly smaller than that of nonscintillators. There does not appear to be any significant difference between the milliarcsecond-scale morphologies of low and high flux density scintillators. These results demonstrate that it is the core of the radio source that is scintillating.

We present 8.4 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 75 extragalactic radio sources drawn from the scintillating sources discovered in the Microarcsecond Scintillation-induced Variability survey. This survey clearly showed that the fraction of scintillating sources and the amplitude of their variability increases strongly with decreasing flux density, raising the possibility that scintillating sources may be systematically extremely core dominated. The observations presented here were designed to investigate this hypothesis. The results indeed show that most of the scintillating sources we observed with the VLBA have an extremely compact, core-dominated morphology, which has important implications for interpretations of the scintillation seen in these sources. In addition, these sources are potential candidates for inclusion in the International Celestial Reference Frame.

We present 8.4 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 69 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources in the International Celestial Reference Frame. These are the first in a series of observations intended to image all such sources at milliarcsecond resolution in order to determine their continued suitability for reference-frame use based on intrinsic structure. We use the resultant images to calculate a core fraction, that is, the ratio of core flux density to total flux density, for all observed sources. The resulting distribution, with a mean value of 0.83, suggests that most sources are relatively compact. However, just over half the observed sources show significant extended emission in the form of multiple compact components. These sources are probably poorly suited for high-accuracy reference-frame use unless intrinsic structure and potential variability can be taken into account. Our observations represent the first large, comprehensive VLBI imaging survey in the southern hemisphere, significantly extending the existing limited VLBI surveys and, along with some well-known objects, containing many sources that have never been imaged at milliarcsecond resolution. The overlap with Very Long Baseline Array images of sources between 0° and -35° declination helps determine the limits to imaging with the southern hemisphere–accessible telescopes.

Between 1997 and 2000, a sample of radio-bright blazars, selected from the BeppoSAX target list, was monitored with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Observations were obtained approximately every two months, at wavelengths of 21, 12, 6 and 3 cm simultaneously. Variability in both total flux density and linear polarization was observed in all sources, on a variety of timescales, due to both source-intrinsic effects and interstellar scintillation.

We present 8.4 GHz VLBI observations of the gigahertz-peaked spectrum source PKS 1934-638 made with the Australian Long Baseline Array. Our observations confirm the compact double nature of the source and yield measured separations of 42.7 ± 0.4 mas at epoch 2002 July and 42.6 ± 0.3 mas at epoch 2002 November, which, when combined with previous observations, yield a rate of separation of 23 ± 10 μas yr-1. This result suggests that over a timescale of 32.1 yr, the separation of the two components has changed marginally. Nominally, this provides support to the emerging consensus that compact symmetric objects (CSOs) are young sources. Our measurement of hot spot separation has, to our knowledge, the longest temporal coverage for a CSO reported in the literature.

Milliarcsecond-accurate radio positions for 22 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources are reported. These positions are derived from Mark III very long baseline interferometry observations made between 2003 February and 2003 August. The results presented here supplement an ongoing project to increase the sky density of southern hemisphere sources in order to better define the International Celestial Reference Frame and to provide additional phase-reference sources with accurate positions for use in astrophysical observations. The positions for all 22 sources are south of δ = -30° (positions for 10 of the sources are south of δ = -60°) and represent the largest group of new milliarcsecond-accurate astrometric positions for sources in this declination range since the initial definition of the International Celestial Reference Frame. The reported positions have average formal uncertainties of 0.5 mas in right ascension and 0.6 mas in declination.

We present the first VLBI maps of H2O maser emission (lambda 1.3cm) in the nucleus of the Circinus Galaxy, constructed from data obtained with the Australia Telescope Long Baseline Array. The maser emission traces a warped, edge-on accretion disk between radii of 0.11+/-0.02 and ~0.40 pc, as well as a wide-angle outflow that extends up to ~1 pc from the estimated disk center. The disk rotation is close to Keplerian (v varies as 1/sqrt(r)), the maximum detected rotation speed is 260 km/s, and the inferred central mass is 1.7+/-0.3 x 10^6 solar masses. The outflowing masers are irregularly distributed above and below the disk, with relative outflow velocities up to ~+/-160 km/s, projected along the line of sight. The flow probably originates closer than 0.1 pc to the central engine, possibly in an inward extension of the accretion disk, though there is only weak evidence of rotation in the outward moving material. We observe that the warp of the disk appears to collimate the outflow and to fix the extent of the ionization cone observed on larger angular scales. This study provides the first direct evidence (i.e., through imaging) of dusty, high-density, molecular material in a nuclear outflow, To appear in The Astrophysical Journal (part 1), Volume 590, June 10, 2003. The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used in support of the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) space VLBI mission, to monitor the total and polarised flux densities of 202 objects that make up 83% of the VSOP all-sky Survey of compact extragalactic radio sources south of δ = + 10°. The primary goal of the ATCA observations is to provide information on the total and polarised emission from the compact components in these sources, for correlation with parameters obtained from VSOP imaging observations. These data represent the first high resolution, long timescale flux density monitoring observations of a large number of southern compact radio sources. In the future, comparison of the ATCA and VSOP data will be used to investigate relativistic beaming models and identify similarities or differences between the major classes of extragalactic radio sources. As an illustration of the scientific value of the ATCA data we undertake a comparison of the properties of the gamma-ray loud and gamma-ray quiet AGN in the southern component of the VSOP Survey sample, finding that in a flat-spectrum sub-sample the gamma-ray loud AGN are more variable than the gamma-ray quiet AGN.

Flux density monitoring data at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz is presented for a sample of 33 southern hemisphere GPS sources, drawn from the 2.7 GHz Parkes survey. This monitoring data, together with VLBI monitoring data, shows that a small fraction of these sources, ∼10%, vary. Their variability falls into several categories: sources whose spectral classification is, at best, ephemeral on a timescale of years; sources with a stable GPS classification that vary, but retain their classification; and a small number of sources that exhibit interstellar scintillation, but that maintain a mean GPS spectrum. Existing data on GPS sources with higher frequency peaks, ≥3 GHz, reveals that many such sources vary. However, the majority of these sources possess a GPS spectrum only during outbursts, and hence should perhaps be classified as ephemeral GPS sources. In addition, significant levels of circular polarisation have been found in a number of GPS sources, both amongst the variables and non-variables. Remarkable amongst these is PKS 1519–273, which possesses strong and variable circular polarisation, and which exhibits IDV in all Stokes parameters.

We compare the observational properties of the circular polarization in Galactic jet sources with that observed in AGN, and outline the constraints they place on the mechanism responsible for the circular polarization. We also discuss the implications of the time scale of polarization variations on the mechanism responsible for the circular polarization.

We have measured annual cycles in the time scales of the rapid, intra-day variability of the total and circularly polarized flux density, of the unusual BL Lac source PKS 1519-273 at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz. The data were collected at the ATCA over the last seven years, and establish unequivocally interstellar scintillation as the principal mechanism responsible for this cm-wavelength intra-day variability.

When we measure the position of an extragalactic radio source through the Galaxy, apparent position wander will be induced because of the gravitational deflection by intervening stars in the Galaxy. When measuring the annual parallax of a radio source with respect to the nearby extragalactic radio sources, such position wander should be taken into account. This effect is especially serious in the case of the trigonometric measurement of Sgr A*, located in the Galactic center. We estimated the optical depth and the event rate of the position wander of the extragalactic radio sources near Sgr A* and found that such position wander degrades the measurement of trigonometric parallax of Sgr A* significantly. For observations with an accuracy of 10 μas, the probability of degradation is a few tens of percent. Several years of continuous observation are needed for the separation of this gravitational position wander from the annual parallactic motion. Even for observations with an accuracy of 25 μas, a few years of continuous observation are needed to eliminate the effect of position wander.

We present images from VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) observations of 14 compact extragalactic southern hemisphere radio sources, including a description of the observations, the data reduction techniques, and the parameters of the resulting images and model fits. These images provide the highest resolution information to date for many of these objects. Comparisons are made between VSOP and previous ground-based VLBI results, including images from data extracted from the geodetic VLBI archive at the United States Naval Observatory. From the VSOP data, we find that the two radio galaxies observed have lower peak brightness temperatures than the 12 quasars. Also, these data show (1) no evidence for obvious differences between the brightness temperature distributions of gamma-ray-loud and gamma-ray-quiet radio-loud active galactic nuclei and (2) no evidence for obvious correlations between brightness temperature and spectral index, radio polarization, flux density, or month timescale modulation index. These results are consistent with previous work by Lister, Tingay, & Preston, who found that the only observable significantly correlated with VSOP-derived brightness temperature is intraday variability, which is strongly correlated with many relativistic beaming indicators. For one source, PKS 1127-145, we undertake a detailed investigation of the milliarcsecond-scale component positions as a function of time, taking data from the literature and the current work, to estimate proper motions. As a result, we suggest that two components previously reported as stationary, C1 and C2, have apparent transverse speeds of (9.1 ± 3.8) and (5.3 ± 2.3) h-1c, respectively. We also make the first investigation of the apparent motion in the nearest GHz-peaked spectrum radio galaxy, PKS 1718-649, finding an upper limit on the apparent separation speed of 0.08c. Comparison of geodetic VLBI and VSOP data show no significant detection of component motion in PKS 0208-512, (2.4 ± 3.1) h-1c, and only a tentative detection in PKS 0537-441, (2.8 ± 2.2) h-1c. A significant detection of component motion is found in PKS 1610-771, solely from the geodetic VLBI data, (9.4 ± 3.5) h-1c.

The observed interstellar scintillation pattern of an intra-day variable radio source is influenced by its source structure. If the velocity of the interstellar medium responsible for the scattering is comparable to the earth's, the vector sum of these allows an observer to probe the scintillation pattern of a source in two dimensions and, in turn, to probe two-dimensional source structure on scales comparable to the angular scale of the scintillation pattern, typically $\sim 10 \mu$as for weak scattering. We review the theory on the extraction of an ``image'' from the scintillation properties of a source, and show how earth's orbital motion changes a source's observed scintillation properties during the course of a year. The imaging process, which we call Earth Orbit Synthesis, requires measurements of the statistical properties of the scintillations at epochs spread throughout the course of a year., Comment: ApJ in press. 25 pages, 7 figs

During its burst of intraday variation (IDV) in June 1996 quasar PKS 0405–385 exhibited rapid changes in the Stokes parameters Q and U that were even faster than the 1 hr timescale changes in I. Auto- and cross-correlation analyses of I,Q, and U at 8.6 GHz show systematic relations between the variations in I,Q, and U. These are well modelled by interstellar scintillation (ISS) of a 14 × 20 μ as source, with about 180 degree rotation of the polarisation angle along its long dimension. This success in explaining the remarkable IDV in polarisation confirms that ISS gives rise to the IDV in this quasar.

We are undertaking an observational program using the ATCA to monitor the intraday variability (IDV) of a sample of sources at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz. The sources were selected to include the known strong southern IDV sources plus a number of sources whose IDV was recently discovered. The present monitoring program will extend over a full year in order to search for any annual cycle that may be present in the long-term IDV characteristics of these sources. In this paper we discuss the observing strategy and data analysis, and present the first results from our observations.

In extending our spectroscopic program, which targets sources drawn from the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) Catalog, we have obtained spectra for about 160 compact flat-spectrum radio sources and determined redshifts for 112 quasars and radio galaxies. A further 14 sources with featureless spectra have been classified as BL Lac objects. Spectra were obtained at three telescopes: the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT), and the two 8.2-m Gemini telescopes in Hawaii and Chile. While most of the sources are powerful quasars, a significant fraction of radio galaxies is also included from the list of non-defining ICRF radio sources., Accepted for publication in AJ

We present the results of continued 8.4 GHz Very Long Baseline Array monitoring of the subparsec-scale structure and evolution of Centaurus A, following on from the initial results presented in 1998 by Tingay et al. We include, for the first time, multiepoch VLBI images at 22.2 GHz that show that the jet is linear and well collimated on scales as small as 0.02 pc (~1000rs). Two components in the subparsec-scale jet continue to evolve slowly with a speed of 0.12c. We confirm that an additional component, close to the core, has no significant motion. Some evidence is seen for rapid variations within individual components, as noted dramatically in 1991–1992 by Tingay et al., albeit at a lower level of activity. Both the stationary behavior of the component close to the core and the internal variability of components in the subparsec-scale jet of Centaurus A may be explained as being due to the existence of shocks created in the wake of major component ejections from the nucleus, as simulated by Agudo et al. (published in 2001). Tentative evidence is found to suggest that two subparsec-scale counterjet components are in motion away from the nucleus. The estimated apparent speeds of the jet and counterjet components are consistent with the previously suggested likely jet viewing angle range, 50°–80°. We also compare our Centaurus A images with high-resolution VLBI images of M87 to show that the region of the Centaurus A jet in which collimation likely first occurs lies a factor of 10 below our current resolution limit. Future space VLBI missions at high frequency will be required to resolve this region.

The intra-day variable source 0917+624 displays annual changes in its timescale of variability. This is explained in terms of a scintillation model in which changes in the variability timescale are due to changes in the relative velocity of the scintillation pattern as the Earth orbits the sun. We report strong variability in the circular and linear polarization of the intraday variable source PKS 1519-273. The circular polarization varies on a timescale of hours to days at frequencies between 1.4 and 8.6 GHz, and is strongly correlated with variations in the total intensity at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz. We argue that the variability is due to interstellar scintillation of a highly compact (15-35 \mu as) component of the source with -3.8\pm 0.4% circular polarization at 4.8 GHz. We find that no simple model for the circular polarization can account for both the high magnitude and the frequency dependence in PKS 1519-273 at centimeter wavelengths.

The accumulation of evidence now strongly favours interstellar scintillation (ISS) as the principal mechanism causing intra-day variability (IDV) at cm wavelengths. While ISS reduces the implied brightness temperatures, they remain uncomfortably high. The distance to the scattering screen is an important parameter in determining the actual brightness temperature encountered.
