We present an optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-101b. We observed three primary transits with Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, covering a wavelength range from 0.3 to 1 $\mu$m. The observations suffer from significant systematics that we model using Gaussian Processes. Kernel selection for the Gaussian Processes is performed in a data-driven approach through Bayesian model comparison. We find a flat and featureless transmission spectrum, corroborating a previous measurement obtained with HST/Wide-Field Camera 3 in the 1–1.7 $\mu$m range. The spectrum is consistent with high-altitude clouds located at less than 100 $\mu$bar. This cloud layer completely blocks our view into deeper parts of the atmosphere and makes WASP-101b the cloudiest gas giant observed so far. We compute a series of temperature-pressure profiles for WASP-101b and compare these to condensation curves for cloud particles, which match clouds composed of silicates. We also include 13 transits observed with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and use these to refine system parameters.

We present new analysis of infrared transmission spectroscopy of the cloud-free hot-Saturn WASP-96b performed with the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes (HST and Spitzer). The WASP-96b spectrum exhibits the absorption feature from water in excellent agreement with synthetic spectra computed assuming a cloud-free atmosphere. The HST-Spitzer spectrum is coupled with Very Large Telescope (VLT) optical transmission spectroscopy which reveals the full pressure-broadened profile of the sodium absorption feature and enables the derivation of absolute abundances. We confirm and correct for a spectral offset of $\Delta R_{{\rm p}}/R_{\ast}=(-4.29^{+0.31}_{-0.37})\,\times10^{-3}$ of the VLT data relative to the HST-Spitzer spectrum. This offset can be explained by the assumed radius for the common-mode correction of the VLT spectra, which is a well-known feature of ground-based transmission spectroscopy. We find evidence for a lack of chromospheric and photometric activity of the host star which, therefore, make a negligible contribution to the offset. We measure abundances for Na and O that are consistent with solar to supersolar, with abundances relative to solar values of $21^{+27}_{-14}$ and $7^{+11}_{-4}$, respectively. We complement the transmission spectrum with new thermal emission constraints from Spitzer observations at 3.6 and $4.5\mu$m, which are best explained by the spectrum of an atmosphere with a temperature decreasing with altitude. A fit to the spectrum assuming an isothermal blackbody atmosphere constrains the dayside temperature to be $T_{\rm{p}}$=$1545$$\pm$$90$K., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Planets orbiting M-dwarf stars are prime targets in the search for rocky exoplanet atmospheres. The small size of M dwarfs renders their planets exceptional targets for transmission spectroscopy, facilitating atmospheric characterization. However, it remains unknown whether their host stars' highly variable extreme-UV radiation environments allow atmospheres to persist. With JWST, we have begun to determine whether or not the most favorable rocky worlds orbiting M dwarfs have detectable atmospheres. Here, we present a 2.8-5.2 micron JWST NIRSpec/G395H transmission spectrum of the warm (700 K, 40.3x Earth's insolation) super-Earth GJ 486b (1.3 R$_{\oplus}$ and 3.0 M$_{\oplus}$). The measured spectrum from our two transits of GJ 486b deviates from a flat line at 2.2 - 3.3 $\sigma$, based on three independent reductions. Through a combination of forward and retrieval models, we determine that GJ 486b either has a water-rich atmosphere (with the most stringent constraint on the retrieved water abundance of H2O > 10% to 2$\sigma$) or the transmission spectrum is contaminated by water present in cool unocculted starspots. We also find that the measured stellar spectrum is best fit by a stellar model with cool starspots and hot faculae. While both retrieval scenarios provide equal quality fits ($\chi^2_\nu$ = 1.0) to our NIRSpec/G395H observations, shorter wavelength observations can break this degeneracy and reveal if GJ 486b sustains a water-rich atmosphere., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. Measuring the metallicity and carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio in exoplanet atmospheres is a fundamental step towards constraining the dominant chemical processes at work and, if in equilibrium, revealing planet formation histories. Transmission spectroscopy provides the necessary means by constraining the abundances of oxygen- and carbon-bearing species; however, this requires broad wavelength coverage, moderate spectral resolution, and high precision that, together, are not achievable with previous observatories. Now that JWST has commenced science operations, we are able to observe exoplanets at previously uncharted wavelengths and spectral resolutions. Here we report time-series observations of the transiting exoplanet WASP-39b using JWST's Near InfraRed Camera (NIRCam). The long-wavelength spectroscopic and short-wavelength photometric light curves span 2.0 - 4.0 $\mu$m, exhibit minimal systematics, and reveal well-defined molecular absorption features in the planet's spectrum. Specifically, we detect gaseous H$_2$O in the atmosphere and place an upper limit on the abundance of CH$_4$. The otherwise prominent CO$_2$ feature at 2.8 $\mu$m is largely masked by H$_2$O. The best-fit chemical equilibrium models favour an atmospheric metallicity of 1-100$\times$ solar (i.e., an enrichment of elements heavier than helium relative to the Sun) and a sub-stellar carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio. Transmission spectroscopy provides insight into the atmospheric properties and consequently the formation history, physics, and chemistry of transiting exoplanets. However, obtaining precise inferences of atmospheric properties from transmission spectra requires simultaneously measuring the strength and shape of multiple spectral absorption features from a wide range of chemical species. This has been challenging given the precision and wavelength coverage of previous observatories. Here, we present the transmission spectrum of the Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-39b obtained using the SOSS mode of the NIRISS instrument on the JWST. This spectrum spans $0.6 - 2.8 \mu$m in wavelength and reveals multiple water absorption bands, the potassium resonance doublet, as well as signatures of clouds. The precision and broad wavelength coverage of NIRISS-SOSS allows us to break model degeneracies between cloud properties and the atmospheric composition of WASP-39b, favoring a heavy element enhancement ("metallicity") of $\sim 10 - 30 \times$ the solar value, a sub-solar carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio, and a solar-to-super-solar potassium-to-oxygen (K/O) ratio. Transport-induced quenching, i.e., the homogenisation of chemical abundances by atmospheric advection, is thought to occur in the atmospheres of hot gas giant exoplanets. While some numerical modelling of this process exists, the three-dimensional nature of transport-induced chemistry is underexplored. Here we present results of 3D cloud- and haze-free simulations of the atmospheres of HAT-P-11b, HD 189733b, HD 209458b, and WASP-17b including coupled hydrodynamics, radiative transfer and chemistry. Our simulations were performed with two chemical schemes: a chemical kinetics scheme, which is capable of capturing transport-induced quenching, and a simpler, more widely used chemical equilibrium scheme. We find that transport-induced quenching is predicted to occur in atmospheres of all planets in our sample; however, the extent to which it affects their synthetic spectra and phase curves varies from planet to planet. The magnetosphere of an exoplanet has yet to be unambiguously detected. Investigations of star-planet interaction and neutral atomic hydrogen absorption during transit to detect magnetic fields in hot Jupiters have been inconclusive, and interpretations of the transit absorption non-unique. In contrast, ionized species escaping a magnetized exoplanet, particularly from the polar caps, should populate the magnetosphere, allowing detection of different regions from the plasmasphere to the extended magnetotail, and characterization of the magnetic field producing them. Here, we report ultraviolet observations of HAT-P-11b, a low-mass (0.08 MJ) exoplanet showing strong, phase-extended transit absorption of neutral hydrogen (maximum and tail transit depths of 32 \pm 4%, 27 \pm 4%) and singly ionized carbon (15 \pm 4%, 12.5 \pm 4%). We show that the atmosphere should have less than six times the solar metallicity (at 200 bars), and the exoplanet must also have an extended magnetotail (1.8-3.1 AU). The HAT-P-11b equatorial magnetic field strength should be about 1-5 Gauss. Our panchromatic approach using ionized species to simultaneously derive metallicity and magnetic field strength can now constrain interior and dynamo models of exoplanets, with implications for formation and evolution scenarios., 68 pages, 12 figures. We present results of 3D hydrodynamical simulations of HD209458b including a coupled, radiatively-active cloud model ({\sc EddySed}). We investigate the role of the mixing by replacing the default convective treatment used in previous works with a more physically relevant mixing treatment ($K_{zz}$) based on global circulation. We find that uncertainty in the efficiency of sedimentation through the sedimentation factor $f_\mathrm{sed}$ plays a larger role in shaping cloud thickness and its radiative feedback on the local gas temperatures -- e.g. hot spot shift and day-to-night side temperature gradient -- than the switch in mixing treatment. We demonstrate using our new mixing treatments that simulations with cloud scales which are a fraction of the pressure scale height improve agreement with the observed transmission spectra, the emission spectra, and the Spitzer 4.5 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ phase curve, although our models are still unable to reproduce the optical and UV transmission spectra. We also find that the inclusion of cloud increases the transit asymmetry in the optical between the east and west limbs, although the difference remains small ($\lesssim 1\%$)., Comment: 17 pages. 14 figures. 1 table

We present a publicly available library of model atmospheres with radiative-convective equilibrium Pressure-Temperature ($P$-$T$) profiles fully consistent with equilibrium chemical abundances, and the corresponding emission and transmission spectrum with R$\sim$5000 at 0.2 $\mu$m decreasing to R$\sim$35 at 30 $\mu$m, for 89 hot Jupiter exoplanets, for four re-circulation factors, six metallicities and six C/O ratios. We find the choice of condensation process (local/rainout) alters the $P$-$T$ profile and thereby the spectrum substantially, potentially detectable by JWST. We find H$^-$ opacity can contribute to form a strong temperature inversion in ultra-hot Jupiters for C/O ratios $\geq$ 1 and can make transmission spectra features flat in the optical, alongside altering the entire emission spectra. We highlight how adopting different model choices such as thermal ionisation, opacities, line-wing profiles and the methodology of varying the C/O ratio, effects the $P$-$T$ structure and the spectrum. We show the role of Fe opacity to form primary/secondary inversion in the atmosphere. We use WASP-17b and WASP-121b as test cases to demonstrate the effect of grid parameters across their full range, while highlighting some important findings, concerning the overall atmospheric structure, chemical transition regimes and their observables. Finally, we apply this library to the current transmission and emission spectra observations of WASP-121b, which shows H$_2$O and tentative evidence for VO at the limb, and H$_2$O emission feature indicative of inversion on the dayside, with very low energy redistribution, thereby demonstrating the applicability of library for planning and interpreting observations of transmission and emission spectrum., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures in the main paper. 13 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables in the supplementary material attached with the main paper here. We present the most complete emission spectrum for inflated hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b combining new HST WFC/G141 spectrum from the Hubble Panchromatic Comparative Exoplanet Treasury (PanCET) program with archival Spitzer eclipse observations. We found a near blackbody-like emission spectrum which is best fitted with an isothermal temperature-pressure (TP) profile that agrees well with the dayside heat redistribution scenario assuming zero Bond albedo. The non-inverted TP profile is consistent with the non-detection of NUV/optical absorbers in the transit spectra. We do not find any evidence for significant H$^-$ opacity nor a metal-rich atmosphere. HAT-P-41b is an ideal target that sits in the transitioning parameter space between hot and ultra-hot Jupiters, and future JWST observations will help us to better constrain the thermal structure and chemical composition., Accepted for publication in AJ

High-resolution Doppler-resolved spectroscopy has presented new opportunities for studying the atmospheres of exoplanets. While the 'classical' cross-correlation approach has proven to be efficient at finding atmospheric species, it is unable to perform direct atmospheric retrievals. Recent work has shown that retrievals are possible using a direct likelihood evaluation or likelihood 'mappings'. The unique aspect of high-resolution retrievals is that the data-processing methods required to remove the stellar and telluric lines also distort the underlying exoplanet's signal and therefore the forward model must be pre-processed to match this filtering. This was the key remaining limitation in our previously published framework. This paper directly addresses this by introducing a simple and fast model-filtering technique that can replicate the processing performed by algorithms such as SysRem and PCA. This enables retrievals to be performed without having to perform expensive injection and pre-processing steps for every model. We show that we can reliably constrain quantitative measures of the atmosphere from transmission spectra including the temperature-pressure profile, relative abundances, planetary velocities and rotational broadening parameters. Finally, we demonstrate our framework using UVES transmission spectroscopy of WASP-121b. We constrain the temperature-pressure profile and relative abundances of Fe, Cr, and V to be $\log_{10}(\chi_{\rm Fe}/\chi_{\rm Cr})$=1.66$\pm$0.28, $\log_{10}(\chi_{\rm Fe}/\chi_{\rm V})$=3.78$\pm$0.29 and $\log_{10}(\chi_{\rm Fe}/\chi_{\rm Mg})$=-1.26$\pm$0.60. The relative abundances are consistent with solar values, with the exception of Fe/Mg, where the large Mg abundance is probably explained by the escaping atmosphere of WASP-121b that is not accounted for in our atmospheric model., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages, 14 figures

The temperature profile of a planetary atmosphere is a key diagnostic of radiative and dynamical processes governing the absorption, redistribution, and emission of energy. Observations have revealed dayside stratospheres that either cool or warm with altitude for a small number of gas giant exoplanets, while other dayside stratospheres are consistent with constant temperatures. Here we report spectroscopic phase curve measurements for the gas giant WASP-121b, which constrain stratospheric temperatures throughout the diurnal cycle. Variations measured for a water vapour spectral feature reveal a temperature profile that transitions from warming with altitude on the dayside hemisphere to cooling with altitude on the nightside hemisphere. The data are well explained by models assuming chemical equilibrium, with water molecules thermally dissociating at low pressures on the dayside and recombining on the nightside. Nightside temperatures are low enough for perovskite (CaTiO3) to condense, which could deplete titanium from the gas phase and explain recent non-detections at the day-night terminator. Nightside temperatures are also consistent with the condensation of refractory species such as magnesium, iron, and vanadium. Detections of these metals at the day-night terminator suggest, however, that if they do form nightside clouds, cold trapping does not efficiently remove them from the upper atmosphere. Horizontal winds and vertical mixing could keep these refractory condensates aloft in the upper atmosphere of the nightside hemisphere until they are recirculated to the hotter dayside hemisphere and vaporised., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy (publisher version is Open Access)

JWST is here. The early release observation program (ERO) provides us with the first look at the scientific data and the spectral capabilities. One of the targets from ERO is HAT-P-18b, an inflated Saturn-mass planet with an equilibrium temperature of $\sim$850K. We present the NIRISS/SOSS transmission spectrum of HAT-P-18b from 0.6 to 2.8$\mu m$ and reveal the planet in the infrared beyond 1.6$\mu m$ for the first time. From the spectrum, we see clear water and escaping helium tail features in an otherwise very hazy atmosphere. Our free chemistry retrievals with ATMO show moderate Bayesian evidence (3.79) supporting the presence of methane, but the spectrum does not display any clearly identifiable methane absorption features. The retrieved methane abundance is $\sim$2 orders of magnitude lower than that of solar composition. The methane-depleted atmosphere strongly rejects simple equilibrium chemistry forward models with solar metallicity and C/O ratio and disfavors high metallicity (100 times) and low C/O ratio (0.3). We report on JWST commissioning observations of the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-14 b, obtained using the Bright Object Time Series (BOTS) mode of the NIRSpec instrument with the G395H/F290LP grating/filter combination ($3-5\mu$m). While the data were used primarily to verify that the NIRSpec BOTS mode is working as expected, and to enable it for general scientific use, they yield a precise transmission spectrum which we find is featureless down to the precision level of the instrument, consistent with expectations given HAT-P-14~b's small scale-height and hence expected atmospheric features. The exquisite quality and stability of the \emph{JWST/NIRSpec} transit spectrum -- almost devoid of any systematic effects -- allowed us to obtain median uncertainties of 50-60 ppm in this wavelength range at a resolution of $R=100$ in a single exposure, which is in excellent agreement with pre-flight expectations and close to the (or at the) photon-noise limit for a $J = 9.094$, F-type star like HAT-P-14. Lyman-$\alpha$ transits have been detected from several nearby exoplanets and are one of our best insights into the atmospheric escape process. However, due to ISM absorption, we typically only observe the transit signature in the blue-wing, making them challenging to interpret. This challenge has been recently highlighted by non-detections from planets thought to be undergoing vigorous escape. Pioneering 3D simulations have shown that escaping hydrogen is shaped into a cometary tail receding from the planet. Motivated by this work, we develop a simple model to interpret Lyman-$\alpha$ transits. Using this framework, we show that the Lyman-$\alpha$ transit depth is primarily controlled by the properties of the stellar tidal field rather than details of the escape process. Instead, the transit duration provides a direct measurement of the velocity of the planetary outflow. This result arises because the underlying physics is the distance a neutral hydrogen atom can travel before it is photoionized in the outflow. Thus, higher irradiation levels, expected to drive more powerful outflows, produce weaker, shorter Lyman-$\alpha$ transits because the outflowing gas is ionized more quickly. Our framework suggests that the generation of energetic neutral atoms may dominate the transit signature early, but the acceleration of planetary material produces long tails. Thus, Lyman-$\alpha$ transits do not primarily probe the mass-loss rates. Instead, they inform us about the velocity at which the escape mechanism is ejecting material from the planet, providing a clean test of predictions from atmospheric escape models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Planets are like children with each one being unique and special. A better understanding of their collective properties requires a deeper understanding of each planet. Here we add the transit and eclipse spectra of hot Jupiter WASP-74b into the ever growing dataset of exoplanet atmosphere spectral library. With six transits and three eclipses using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Spitzer Space Telescope (\textit{Spitzer}), we present the most complete and precise atmospheric spectra of WASP-74b. We found no evidence for TiO/VO nor super-Rayleigh scattering reported in previous studies. The transit shows a muted water feature with strong Rayleigh scattering extending into the infrared. The eclipse shows a featureless blackbody-like WFC3/G141 spectrum and a weak methane absorption feature in the Spitzer 3.6 $\mu m$ band. Aerosols have been found to be nearly ubiquitous in substellar atmospheres

We present a ground-based optical transmission spectrum for the warm Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-110b from two transit observations made with the FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph (FORS2) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The spectrum covers the wavelength range from 4000 to 8333\AA, which is binned in 46 transit depths measured to an averaged precision of 220 parts per million (ppm) over an averaged 80\AA~bin for a Vmag=12.8 star. The measured transit depths are unaffected by a dilution from a close A-type field dwarf, which was fully resolved. The overall main characteristic of the transmission spectrum is an increasing radius with wavelength and a lack of the theoretically predicted pressure-broadened sodium and potassium absorption features for a cloud-free atmosphere. We analyze archival high-resolution optical spectroscopy and find evidence for low to moderate activity of the host star, which we take into account in the atmospheric retrieval analysis. Using the AURA retrieval code, we find that the observed transmission spectrum can be best explained by a combination of unocculted stellar faculae and a cloud deck. Transmission spectra of cloud-free and hazy atmospheres are rejected at a high confidence. Neptune-size exoplanets seem particularly sensitive to atmospheric evaporation, making it essential to characterize the stellar high-energy radiation that drives this mechanism. This is particularly important with M dwarfs, which emit a large and variable fraction of their luminosity in the UV and can display strong flaring behavior. The warm Neptune GJ3470b, hosted by an M2 dwarf, was found to harbor a giant hydrogen exosphere thanks to 3 transits observed with the HST/STIS. Here we report on 3 additional transit observations from the PanCET program, obtained with the HST/COS. These data confirm the absorption signature from GJ3470b's exosphere in the stellar Ly-alpha line and demonstrate its stability over time. No planetary signatures are detected in other lines, setting a 3sigma limit on GJ3470b's FUV radius at 1.3x its Roche lobe radius. We detect 3 flares from GJ3470. They show different spectral energy distributions but peak consistently in the Si III line, which traces intermediate-temperature layers in the transition region. These layers appear to play a particular role in GJ3470's activity as emission lines that form at lower or higher temperatures than Si III evolved differently over the long term. Based on the measured emission lines, we derive synthetic XUV spectra for the 6 observed quiescent phases, covering one year, as well as for the 3 flaring episodes. Our results suggest that most of GJ3470's quiescent high-energy emission comes from the EUV domain, with flares amplifying the FUV emission more strongly. The hydrogen photoionization lifetimes and mass loss derived for GJ3470b show little variation over the epochs, in agreement with the stability of the exosphere. We present results from 3D radiative-hydrodynamical simulations of HD 209458b with a fully coupled treatment of clouds using the EddySed code, critically, including cloud radiative feedback via absorption and scattering. We demonstrate that the thermal and optical structure of the simulated atmosphere is markedly different, for the majority of our simulations, when including cloud radiative effects, suggesting this important mechanism can not be neglected. Additionally, we further demonstrate that the cloud structure is sensitive to not only the cloud sedimentation efficiency (termed $f_{\textrm{sed}}$ in EddySed), but also the temperature-pressure profile of the deeper atmosphere. We briefly discuss the large difference between the resolved cloud structures of this work, adopting a phase-equilibrium and parameterised cloud model, and our previous work incorporating a cloud microphysical model, although a fairer comparison where, for example, the same list of constituent condensates is included in both treatments, is reserved for a future work. Our results underline the importance of further study into the potential condensate size distributions and vertical structures, as both strongly influence the radiative impact of clouds on the atmosphere. Finally, we present synthetic observations from our simulations reporting an improved match, over our previous cloud-free simulations, to the observed transmission, HST WFC3 emission and 4.5 $\mu$m Spitzer phase curve of HD 209458b. Stellar heating causes atmospheres of close-in exoplanets to expand and escape. These extended atmospheres are difficult to observe because their main spectral signature - neutral hydrogen at ultraviolet wavelengths - is strongly absorbed by interstellar medium. We report the detection of the near-infrared triplet of neutral helium in the transiting warm Neptune-mass exoplanet HAT-P-11b using ground-based, high-resolution observations. The helium feature is repeatable over two independent transits, with an average absorption depth of 1.08+/-0.05%. Interpreting absorption spectra with 3D simulations of the planet's upper atmosphere suggests it extends beyond 5 planetary radii, with a large scale height and a helium mass loss rate =< 3x10^5 g/s. (Abridged) Short-period gas giant exoplanets are susceptible to intense atmospheric escape due to their large scale heights and strong high-energy irradiation. This process is thought to occur ubiquitously, but to date we have only detected direct evidence of atmospheric escape in hot Jupiters and warm Neptunes. The paucity of cases for intermediate, Saturn-sized exoplanets at varying levels of irradiation precludes a detailed understanding of the underlying physics in atmospheric escape of hot gas giants. Our objectives here are to assess the high-energy environment of the warm ($T_\mathrm{eq} = 970$ K) Saturn WASP-29 b and search for signatures of atmospheric escape. We used far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations from the Hubble Space Telescope to analyze the flux time series of H I, C II, Si III, Si IV, and N V during the transit of WASP-29 b. At 3$\sigma$ confidence, we rule out any in-transit absorption of H Ilarger than 92% in the Lyman-$\alpha$ blue wing and 19% in the red wing. We found an in-transit flux decrease of $39\%^{+12\%}_{-11\%}$ in the ground-state C II emission line at 133.45 nm. But due to this signal being significantly present in only one visit, it is difficult to attribute a planetary or stellar origin for the ground-state C II signal. We place 3$\sigma$ absorption upper limits of 40%, 49% and 24% for Si III, Si IV, and for excited-state C II at 133.57 nm, respectively. Low activity levels and the faint X-ray luminosity suggest that WASP-29 is an old, inactive star. An energy-limited approximation combined with the reconstructed EUV spectrum of the host suggests that the planet is losing its atmosphere at a rate of $4 \times 10^9$ g s$^{-1}$. We present a new optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-79b. We observed three transits with the STIS instrument mounted on HST, spanning 0.3 - 1.0 um. Combining these transits with previous observations, we construct a complete 0.3 - 5.0 um transmission spectrum of WASP-79b. Both HST and ground-based observations show decreasing transit depths towards blue wavelengths, contrary to expectations from Rayleigh scattering or hazes. We infer atmospheric and stellar properties from the full near-UV to infrared transmission spectrum of WASP-79b using three independent retrieval codes, all of which yield consistent results. Our retrievals confirm previous detections of H$_{2}$O (at 4.0$\sigma$ confidence), while providing moderate evidence of H$^{-}$ bound-free opacity (3.3$\sigma$) and strong evidence of stellar contamination from unocculted faculae (4.7$\sigma$). The retrieved H$_{2}$O abundance ($\sim$ 1$\%$) suggests a super-stellar atmospheric metallicity, though stellar or sub-stellar abundances remain consistent with present observations (O/H = 0.3 - 34$\times$ stellar). All three retrieval codes obtain a precise H$^{-}$ abundance constraint: log(X$_{\rm{H^{-}}}$) $\approx$ -8.0 $\pm$ 0.7. The potential presence of H$^{-}$ suggests that JWST observations may be sensitive to ionic chemistry in the atmosphere of WASP-79b. The inferred faculae are $\sim$ 500 K hotter than the stellar photosphere, covering $\sim$ 15$\%$ of the stellar surface. The emergent spectra of close-in, giant exoplanets ("hot Jupiters") are expected to be distinct from those of self-luminous objects with similar effective temperatures because hot Jupiters are primarily heated from above by their host stars rather than internally from the release of energy from their formation. Theoretical models predict a continuum of dayside spectra for hot Jupiters as a function of irradiation level, with the coolest planets having absorption features in their spectra, intermediate-temperature planets having emission features due to thermal inversions, and the hottest planets having blackbody-like spectra due to molecular dissociation and continuum opacity from the H- ion. Absorption and emission features have been detected in the spectra of a number of individual hot Jupiters, and population-level trends have been observed in photometric measurements. However, there has been no unified, population-level study of the thermal emission spectra of hot Jupiters such as has been done for cooler brown dwarfs and transmission spectra of hot Jupiters. Here we show that hot Jupiter secondary eclipse spectra centered around a water absorption band at 1.4 microns follow a common trend in water feature strength with temperature. The observed trend is broadly consistent with model predictions for how the thermal structures of solar-composition planets vary with irradiation level. Nevertheless, the ensemble of planets exhibits some degree of scatter around the mean trend for solar composition planets. The spread can be accounted for if the planets have modest variations in metallicity and/or elemental abundance ratios, which is expected from planet formation models. The chemical abundances of exoplanet atmospheres may provide valuable information about the bulk compositions, formation pathways, and evolutionary histories of planets. Exoplanets with large, relatively cloud-free atmospheres, and which orbit bright stars provide the best opportunities for accurate abundance measurements. For this reason, we measured the transmission spectrum of the bright (V ∼ 10.2), large (1.37 RJ), sub-Saturn mass (0.19 MJ) exoplanet WASP-127b across the near-UV to near-infrared wavelength range (0.3–5 μm), using the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. Our results show a feature-rich transmission spectrum, with absorption from Na, H2O, and CO2, and wavelength-dependent scattering from small-particle condensates. We ran two types of atmospheric retrieval models: one enforcing chemical equilibrium, and the other which fit the abundances freely. Our retrieved abundances at chemical equilibrium for Na, O, and C are all supersolar, with abundances relative to solar values of 9$^{+15}_{-6}$, 16$^{+7}_{-5}$, and 26$^{+12}_{-9}$, respectively. Despite giving conflicting C/O ratios, both retrievals gave supersolar CO2 volume mixing ratios, which adds to the likelihood that WASP-127b’s bulk metallicity is supersolar, since CO2 abundance is highly sensitive to atmospheric metallicity. We detect water at a significance of 13.7σ. Our detection of Na is in agreement with previous ground-based detections, though we find a much lower abundance, and we also do not find evidence for Li or K despite increased sensitivity. In the future, spectroscopy with James Webb Space Telescope will be able to constrain WASP-127b’s C/O ratio, and may reveal the formation history of this metal-enriched, highly observable exoplanet.

We present ground-based, spectroscopic observations of two transits of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b covering the wavelength range $\approx$500 - 950 nm using Gemini/GMOS. We use a Gaussian process framework to model instrumental systematics in the light curves, and also demonstrate the use of the more generalised Student's-T process to verify our results. We find that our measured transmission spectrum, whilst showing overall agreement, is slightly discrepant with results obtained using HST/STIS, particularly for wavelengths shortward of $\approx$650 nm. In contrast to the STIS results, we find evidence for an increasing blueward slope and little evidence for absorption from either TiO or VO in our retrieval, in agreement with a number of recent studies performed at high-resolution. We suggest that this might point to some other absorbers, particularly some combination of recently detected atomic metals, in addition to scattering by hazes, being responsible for the excess optical absorption and observed vertical thermal inversion. Our results are also broadly consistent with previous ground-based photometry and 3D GCM predictions, however, these assumed different chemistry to our retrievals. In addition, we show that the GMOS observations are repeatable over short periods (days), similarly to the HST/STIS observations. Their difference over longer periods (months) could well be the result of temporal variability in the atmospheric properties (i.e. weather) as predicted by theoretical models of ultra-hot Jupiters; however, more mundane explanations such as instrumental systematics and stellar activity cannot be fully ruled out, and we encourage future observations to explore this possibility., Comment: 17 pages, 10 Figures. Aims.We aim to demonstrate that the presence and mass of an exoplanet can now be effectively derived from the astrometry of another exoplanet.Methods.We combined previous astrometry ofβPictoris b with a new set of observations from the GRAVITY interferometer. The orbital motion ofβPictoris b is fit using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations in Jacobi coordinates. The inner planet,βPictoris c, was also reobserved at a separation of 96 mas, confirming the previous orbital estimations.Results.From the astrometry of planet b only, we can (i) detect the presence ofβPictoris c and (ii) constrain its mass to 10.04−3.10+4.53MJup. If one adds the astrometry ofβPictoris c, the mass is narrowed down to 9.15−1.06+1.08MJup. The inclusion of radial velocity measurements does not affect the orbital parameters significantly, but it does slightly decrease the mass estimate to 8.89−0.75+0.75MJup. With a semimajor axis of 2.68 ± 0.02 au, a period of 1221 ± 15 days, and an eccentricity of 0.32 ± 0.02, the orbital parameters ofβPictoris c are now constrained as precisely as those ofβPictoris b. The orbital configuration is compatible with a high-order mean-motion resonance (7:1). The impact of the resonance on the planets’ dynamics would then be negligible with respect to the secular perturbations, which might have played an important role in the eccentricity excitation of the outer planet.

The James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST) NIRSpec instrument will unveil the nature of exoplanet atmospheres across the wealth of planet types, from temperate terrestrial worlds to ultrahot Jupiters. In particular, the 0.6–5.3 μm PRISM mode is especially well suited for efficient spectroscopic exoplanet observations spanning a number of important spectral features. We analyze a lab-measured NIRSpec PRISM mode Bright Object Time Series observation from the perspective of a JWST user to understand the instrument performance and detector properties. We create two realistic transiting exoplanet time-series observations by performing injection-recovery tests on the lab-measured data to quantify the effects of real instrument jitter, drift, intrapixel sensitivity variations, and 1/f noise on measured transmission spectra. By fitting the time-series systematics simultaneously with the injected transit, we can obtain more realistic transit-depth uncertainties that take into account noise sources that are currently not modeled by traditional exposure time calculators. We find that sources of systematic noise related to intrapixel sensitivity variations and point-spread function motions are apparent in the data at the level of a few hundred ppm but can be effectively detrended using a low-order polynomial with detector position. We recover the injected spectral features of GJ 436 b and TRAPPIST-1 d and place a 3σ upper limit on the detector noise floor of 14 ppm. We find that the noise floor is consistent with σ level, which bodes well for future observations of challenging targets with faint atmospheric signatures.

Exoplanets with cloud-free, haze-free atmospheres at the pressures probed by transmission spectroscopy represent a valuable opportunity for detailed atmospheric characterization and precise chemical abundance constraints. We present the first optical to infrared (0.3-5 microns) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-62b, measured with Hubble/STIS and Spitzer/IRAC. The spectrum is characterized by a 5.1-sigma detection of Na I absorption at 0.59 microns, in which the pressure-broadened wings of the Na D-lines are observed from space for the first time. A spectral feature at 0.4 microns is tentatively attributed to SiH at 2.1-sigma confidence. Our retrieval analyses are consistent with a cloud-free atmosphere without significant contamination from stellar heterogeneities. We simulate James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations, for a combination of instrument modes, to assess the atmospheric characterization potential of WASP-62b. We demonstrate that JWST can conclusively detect Na, H2O, FeH, and SiH within the scope of its Early Release Science (ERS) program. As the only transiting giant planet currently known in the JWST Continuous Viewing Zone, WASP-62b could prove a benchmark giant exoplanet for detailed atmospheric characterization in the James Webb era., 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present a comprehensive analysis of the 0.3--5\,$\mu$m transit spectrum for the inflated hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b. The planet was observed in transit with Hubble STIS and WFC3 as part of the Hubble Panchromatic Comparative Exoplanet Treasury (PanCET) program, and we combine those data with warm \textit{Spitzer} transit observations. We extract transit depths from each of the data sets, presenting the STIS transit spectrum (0.29--0.93\,$\mu$m) for the first time. We retrieve the transit spectrum both with a free-chemistry retrieval suite (AURA) and a complementary chemical equilibrium retrieval suite (PLATON) to constrain the atmospheric properties at the day-night terminator. Both methods provide an excellent fit to the observed spectrum. Both AURA and PLATON retrieve a metal-rich atmosphere for almost all model assumptions (most likely O/H ratio of $\log_{10}{Z/Z_{\odot}} = 1.46^{+0.53}_{-0.68}$ and $\log_{10}{Z/Z_{\odot}} = 2.33^{+0.23}_{-0.25}$, respectively); this is driven by a 4.9-$\sigma$ detection of H$_2$O as well as evidence of gas absorption in the optical ($>$2.7-$\sigma$ detection) due to Na, AlO and/or VO/TiO, though no individual species is strongly detected. Both retrievals determine the transit spectrum to be consistent with a clear atmosphere, with no evidence of haze or high-altitude clouds. Interior modeling constraints on the maximum atmospheric metallicity ($\log_{10}{Z/Z_{\odot}} < 1.7$) favor the AURA results. The inferred elemental oxygen abundance suggests that HAT-P-41b has one of the most metal-rich atmospheres of any hot Jupiters known to date. We report ground-based transmission spectroscopy of the highly irradiated and ultra-short period hot-Jupiter WASP-103b covering the wavelength range $\approx$ 400-600 nm using the FORS2 instrument on the Very Large Telescope. The light curves show significant time-correlated noise which is mainly invariant in wavelength and which we model using a Gaussian process. The precision of our transmission spectrum is improved by applying a common-mode correction derived from the white light curve, reaching typical uncertainties in transit depth of $\approx$ 2x10$^{-4}$ in wavelength bins of 15 nm. After correction for flux contamination from a blended companion star, our observations reveal a featureless spectrum across the full range of the FORS2 observations and we are unable to confirm the Na absorption previously inferred using Gemini/GMOS or the strong Rayleigh scattering observed using broad-band light curves. We performed a Bayesian atmospheric retrieval on the full optical-infrared transmission spectrum using the additional data from Gemini/GMOS, HST/WFC3 and Spitzer observations and recover evidence for H$_2$O absorption at the 4.0$\sigma$ level. However, our observations are not able to completely rule out the presence of Na, which is found at 2.0$\sigma$ in our retrievals. This may in part be explained by patchy/inhomogeneous clouds or hazes damping any absorption features in our FORS2 spectrum, but an inherently small scale height also makes this feature challenging to probe from the ground. Our results nonetheless demonstrate the continuing potential of ground-based observations for investigating exoplanet atmospheres and emphasise the need for the application of consistent and robust statistical techniques to low-resolution spectra in the presence of instrumental systematics., Comment: 17 pages, 8 Figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS
