Search

Tens of new moons around both Jupiter and Saturn have been announced on Minor Planet Electronic Circulars (MPECs) in late 2022 and early 2023. Jupiter now has 95 and Saturn 146 confirmed moons. Many smaller and fainter moons have also been detected at these planets but not yet confirmed through MPECs. These discoveries nearly complete the small moon population of Jupiter to about 2 km and Saturn to about 3 km and show new dynamical satellite families. The once lone Carpo is now joined by S/2018 J4, making it a group of two small prograde moons around Jupiter. The Inuit prograde family around Saturn appears to be 3 distinct groupings. S/2004 S24 seems to be a unique distant small Saturn prograde moon, as could be S/2006 S12 and S/2019 S6. S/2006 S20 might be the first found member of a compact Phoebe Saturn moon family.

We observed near-Sun comet 323P/SOHO for the first time using ground and space telescopes. In late December 2020, the object was recovered at Subaru showing no cometary features on its way to perihelion. However, in our postperihelion observations it developed a long narrow tail mimicking a disintegrated comet. The ejecta, comprised of at least mm-sized dust with power-law size distribution index $3.2 \pm 0.2$, was impulsively produced shortly after the perihelion passage, during which $\gtrsim$0.1-10% of the nucleus mass was shed due to excessive thermal stress and rotational disruption. Two fragments of $\sim$20 m in radius (assuming a geometric albedo of 0.15) were seen in HST observations from early March 2021. The nucleus, with an effective radius of $86 \pm 3$ m (the same albedo assumed) and an aspect ratio of $\sim$0.7, has a rotation period of 0.522 hr, which is the shortest for known comets in the solar system and implies cohesive strength $\gtrsim$10-100 Pa in the interior. The colour of the object was freakish, and how it changed temporally has never been previously observed. Using our astrometry, we found a strong nongravitational effect following a heliocentric dependency of $r_{\rm H}^{-8.5}$ in the transverse motion of the object. We report statistically significant detections of non-radial nongravitational accelerations based on astrometric data in the photometrically inactive objects 1998 KY$_{26}$, 2005 VL$_1$, 2016 NJ$_{33}$, 2010 VL$_{65}$, 2016 RH$_{120}$, and 2010 RF$_{12}$. The magnitudes of the nongravitational accelerations are greater than those typically induced by the Yarkovsky effect and there is no radiation-based, non-radial effect that can be so large. Therefore, we hypothesize that the accelerations are driven by outgassing, and calculate implied H$_2$O production rates for each object. We attempt to reconcile outgassing induced acceleration with the lack of visible comae or photometric activity via the absence of surface dust and low levels of gas production. Although these objects are small and some are rapidly rotating, surface cohesive forces are stronger than the rotational forces and rapid rotation alone cannot explain the lack of surface debris. It is possible that surface dust was removed previously, perhaps via outgassing activity that increased the rotation rates to their present day value. We calculate dust production rates of order $\sim10^{-4}$ g s$^{-1}$ in each object assuming that the nuclei are bare, within the upper limits of dust production from a sample stacked image of 1998 KY$_{26}$ of $\dot{M}_{\rm Dust}, 21 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal

The Earth Trojans are co-orbitals librating around the Lagrange points $L_4$ or $L_5$ of the Sun-Earth system. Although many numerical studies suggest that they can maintain their dynamical status and be stable on timescales up to a few tens of thousands of years or even longer, they remain an elusive population. Thus far only one transient member (2010 TK$_7$) has been discovered serendipitously. Here, we present a dynamical study of asteroid 2020 XL$_5$. With our meticulous followup astrometric observations of the object, we confirmed that it is a new Earth Trojan. However, its eccentric orbit brings it close encounters with Venus on a frequent basis. Based on our N-body integration, we found that the asteroid was captured into the current Earth Trojan status in the 15th century, and then it has a likelihood of 99.5% to leave the $L_4$ region within the next $\sim$10 kyr. Our goal is to request input from the lunar and planetary community regarding issues of planetary coordinate systems and cartography standards. We begin with an overview of the work of the International Astronomical Union Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements. We briefly describe the operations and membership of the Working Group, some of the various uses of the recommendations it makes, our most recent (2018) published report and the recommendations therein, and the outlook for our next such report. We then consider several issues and questions regarding the future of the Working Group and regarding planetary cartography and planetary data spatial infrastructure in general. This includes possible near-term projects, how we and others might collect and consider community input and includes some ideas regarding possible outcomes or future work that will need to be addressed by the Working Group or other organizations.

Examining Arrokoth The New Horizons spacecraft flew past the Kuiper Belt object (486958) Arrokoth (also known as 2014 MU 69 ) in January 2019. Because of the great distance to the outer Solar System and limited bandwidth, it will take until late 2020 to downlink all the spacecraft's observations back to Earth. Three papers in this issue analyze recently downlinked data, including the highest-resolution images taken during the encounter (see the Perspective by Jewitt). Spencer et al. examined Arrokoth's geology and geophysics using stereo imaging, dated the surface using impact craters, and produced a geomorphological map. Grundy et al. investigated the composition of the surface using color imaging and spectroscopic data and assessed Arrokoth's thermal emission using microwave radiometry. McKinnon et al. used simulations to determine how Arrokoth formed: Two gravitationally bound objects gently spiraled together during the formation of the Solar System. Together, these papers determine the age, composition, and formation process of the most pristine object yet visited by a spacecraft. We point out some errors in the most recent report from the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements (Archinal et al. 2018).

Near-Earth asteroid (410777) 2009 FD is a potentially hazardous asteroid with potential impacts on Earth at the end of the 22nd century. The astrometry collected during the 2019 apparition provides information on the trajectory of (410777) by constraining the Yarkovsky effect, which is the main source of uncertainty for future predictions, and informing the impact hazard assessment. We included the Yarkovsky effect in the force model and estimated its magnitude from the fit to the (410777) optical and radar astrometric data. We performed the (410777) hazard assessment over 200 years by using two independent approaches: the NEODyS group adopted a generalisation of the Line Of Variations method in a 7-dimensional space, whereas the JPL team resorted to the Multilayer Clustered Sampling technique. We obtain a 4-sigma detection of the Yarkovsky effect acting on (410777), which corresponds to a semimajor axis drift of (3.6 +/- 0.9) x 10^{-3} au/Myr. As for the hazard results of both teams, the main impact possibility in 2185 is ruled out and the only remaining one is in 2190, but with a probability smaller than 10^{-8}., 8 pages, 2 figures

We report the discovery of 12 new satellites of Jupiter, giving Jupiter 79 known satellites. The new finds are between 23rd-24th mag in the r-band and 1-3 km in diameter assuming dark albedos. Nine of the discoveries are in the distant retrograde satellite groupings. Two of the new satellites are in the closer Himalia prograde group near 28 degrees in inclination. S/2016 J2, nicknamed Valetudo, has an orbit unlike any other known outer satellite and is the most distant prograde satellite around any planet at 0.36 Hill radii. Numerical simulations show S/2016 J2 is very stable, with average and range of i=34.2+-3 deg, e=0.216+-0.125, and a=18.9+-0.7 million km over 100 Myrs. Our stability simulations show a S/2016 J2 like orbit would be stable out to a=21.8 million km or 0.41 Hill radii, but no further, unlike more distant and eccentric retrograde satellites. S/2016 J2's large semi-major axis means it significantly overlaps the orbits of the distant retrogrades. International audience; This report continues the practice where the IAU Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements revises recommendations regarding those topics for the planets, satellites, minor planets, and comets approximately every 3 years. The Working Group has now become a "functional working group" of the IAU, and its membership is open to anyone interested in participating. We describe the procedure for submitting questions about the recommendations given here or the application of these recommendations for creating a new or updated coordinate system for a given body. Regarding body orientation, the following bodies have been updated: Mercury, based on MESSENGER results; Mars, along with a refined longitude definition; Phobos; Deimos; (1) Ceres; (52) Europa; (243) Ida; (2867) Šteins; Neptune; (134340) Pluto and its satellite Charon; comets 9P/Tempel 1, 19P/Borrelly, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and 103P/Hartley 2, noting that such information is valid only between specific epochs. The special challenges related to mapping 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko are also discussed. Approximate expressions for the Earth have been removed in order to avoid confusion, and the low precision series expression for the Moon's orientation has been removed. The previously online only recommended orientation model for (4) Vesta is repeated with an explanation of how it was updated. Regarding body shape, text has been included to explain the expected uses of such information, and the relevance of the cited uncertainty information. The size of the Sun has been updated, and notation added that the size and the ellipsoidal axes for the Earth and Jupiter have been recommended by an IAU Resolution. The distinction of a reference radius for a body (here, the Moon and Titan) is made between cartographic uses, and for orthoprojection and geophysical uses. The recommended radius for Mercury has been updated based on MESSENGER results. The recommended radius for Titan is returned to its previous value. Size information has been updated for 13 other Saturnian satellites and added for Aegaeon. The sizes of Pluto and Charon have been updated. Size information has been updated for (1) Ceres and given for (16) Psyche and (52) Europa. The size of (25143) Itokawa has been corrected. In addition, the discussion of terminology for the poles (hemispheres) of small bodies has been modified and a discussion on cardinal directions added. Although they continue to be used for planets and their satellites, it is assumed that the planetographic and planetocentric coordinate system definitions do not apply to small bodies. However, planetocentric and planetodetic latitudes and longitudes may be used on such bodies, following the right-hand rule. We repeat our previous recommendations that planning and efforts be made to make controlled cartographic products; newly recommend that common formulations should be used for orientation and size; continue to recommend that a community consensus be developed for the orientation models of Jupiter and Saturn; newly recommend that historical summaries of the coordinate systems for given bodies should be developed, and point out that for planets and satellites planetographic systems have generally been historically preferred over planetocentric systems, and that in cases when planetographic coordinates have been widely used in the past, there is no obvious advantage to switching to the use of planetocentric coordinates. The Working Group also requests community input on the question submitting process, posting of updates to the Working Group website, and on whether recommendations should be made regarding exoplanet coordinate systems.

We imaged Comet 252P/2000 G1 (LINEAR) (hereafter 252P) with the Hubble Space Telescope and both 252P and P/2016 BA$_{14}$ (PanSTARRS) (hereafter BA$_{14}$) with the Discovery Channel Telescope in March and April 2016, surrounding its close encounter to Earth. The r'-band $Af\rho$ of 252P in a 0.2"-radius aperture were $16.8\pm0.3$ and $57\pm1$ cm on March 14 and April 4, respectively, and its gas production rates were: $Q$(OH) = $(5.8\pm0.1)\times10^{27}$ s$^{-1}$, and $Q$(CN) = $(1.25\pm0.01)\times10^{25}$ s$^{-1}$ on April 17. The r'-band upper limit $Af\rho$ of BA1$_{14}$ was $0.19\pm0.01$ cm in a 19.2"-radius aperture, and $Q$(CN) = $(1.4\pm0.1)10^{22}$ s$^{-1}$ on April 17, 2017. 252P shows a bright and narrow jet of a few hundred kilometers long in the sunward direction, changing its projected position angle in the sky with a periodicity consistent with 7.24 hours. However, its photometric lightcurve is consistent with a periodicity of 5.41 hours. We suggest that the nucleus of 252P is likely in a non-principal axis rotation. The nucleus radius of 252P is estimated to be about $0.3\pm0.03$ km, indicating an active fraction of 40% to >100% in its 2016 apparition. Evidence implies a possible cloud of slow-moving grains surrounding the nucleus. The activity level of 252P in the 2016 apparition increased by two orders of magnitude from its previous apparitions, making this apparition unusual. In November 2004 radar delay measurements of near-Earth asteroid (3908) Nyx obtained at the Arecibo radio telescope turned out to be $$7.5\sigma $$ away from the orbital prediction. We prove that this discrepancy was caused by a poor astrometric treatment and an incomplete dynamical model, which did not account for nongravitational perturbations. To improve the astrometric treatment, we remove known star catalog biases, apply suitable weights to the observations, and use an aggressive outlier rejection scheme. The main issue related to the dynamical model is having not accounted for the Yarkovsky effect. Including the Yarkovsky perturbation in the model makes the orbital prediction and the radar measurements statistically consistent by both reducing the offset and increasing the prediction uncertainty to a more realistic level. This analysis shows the sensitivity of high precision predictions to the astrometric treatment and the Yarkovsky effect. By using the full observational dataset we obtain a $$5\sigma $$ detection of the Yarkovsky effect acting on Nyx corresponding to an orbital drift $$da/dt = (142 \pm 29)$$ m/year. In turn, we derive constraints on thermal inertia and bulk density. In particular, we find that the bulk density of Nyx is around 1 g/cm $$^3$$ , possibly less. To make sure that our results are not corrupted by an asteroid impact or a close approach with a perturbing asteroid not included in our dynamical model, we show that the astrometry provides no convincing evidence of an impulsive variation of Nyx’s velocity while crossing the main belt region.

Prior to its close encounter with the Kuiper Belt object (KBO) (486958) 2014 MU69 on 2019 January 1, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft observed other KBOs from distances greater than 0.1 au at solar phase angles far larger than those attainable from Earth. The expanded range in phase angle afforded by these distant KBO (DKBO) observations enables comparisons between their phase functions and those of other solar system objects. Here we present extended New Horizons phase angle coverage of plutino (15810) Arawn (1994 JR1) to 131°, resonant KBO 2012 HE₈₅ to 64°, scattered disk KBO 2011 HK₁₀₃ to 124°, hot classical (515977) 2012 HZ₈₄ to 73°, and cold classical KBOs 2011 HJ₁₀₃ and 2011 JY31 to 27° and 122°, respectively. In general, DKBO solar phase curves have slopes (i.e., phase coefficients) and shapes (with corresponding phase integrals q) similar to those of other dark, small solar system objects including comet nuclei, asteroids, and satellites. Until stellar occultations by these DKBOs provide information about their size, geometric albedos p (and Bond albedos A = pq) must be inferred from the median albedos measured by thermal radiometry for each dynamical class. Bond albedos for these DKBOs range from 0.01 to 0.04. Cold classical JY₃₁ has a slightly lower slope and higher phase integral than the other DKBOs, and its slope and phase integral come closest to matching those of cold classical MU₆₉, suggesting that cold classical KBOs share surface scattering characteristics that are distinct from those of other KBOs.

We present our dynamical analysis of near-Earth object 2012 LA, derived from a collection of astrometric positions obtained by us with telescopes on Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, densely covering the entire 2012 apparition of the object. Clear evidence of non-gravitational acceleration, attributable to radiation pressure, is present in the complete dataset, but would not be detectable with the sparse sampling of the apparition obtained by other stations. Our determination of the Area to Mass Ratio of A/m = (0.335 ± 0.028) × 10−3 m2/kg is the most significant detection of radiation pressure obtained to date on any natural object. This value can be converted into a bulk density estimate of ρ = 460 - 210 + 260 kg / m 3 , under certain assumptions on size, albedo and shape.

We have remeasured over 430 astrometric observations of (99942) Apophis using the 2MASS reference catalog to reduce the level of astrometric bias in the data caused by our previous use of the USNO-B1.0 reference catalog. The new measurements show an RMS residual of just 0.12 ″ , which is comparable to the size of the bias that was present in the positions referred to the USNO-B1.0 catalog. We also present our method for computing astrometric uncertainties for each individual observation. These new measurements and uncertainties should allow considerably more reliable impact predictions.

We describe the Pan-STARRS Moving Object Processing System (MOPS), a modern software package that produces automatic asteroid discoveries and identifications from catalogs of transient detections from next-generation astronomical survey telescopes. MOPS achieves > 99.5% efficiency in producing orbits from a synthetic but realistic population of asteroids whose measurements were simulated for a Pan-STARRS4-class telescope. Additionally, using a non-physical grid population, we demonstrate that MOPS can detect populations of currently unknown objects such as interstellar asteroids. MOPS has been adapted successfully to the prototype Pan-STARRS1 telescope despite differences in expected false detection rates, fill-factor loss and relatively sparse observing cadence compared to a hypothetical Pan-STARRS4 telescope and survey. MOPS remains >99.5% efficient at detecting objects on a single night but drops to 80% efficiency at producing orbits for objects detected on multiple nights. This loss is primarily due to configurable MOPS processing limits that are not yet tuned for the Pan-STARRS1 mission. The core MOPS software package is the product of more than 15 person-years of software development and incorporates countless additional years of effort in third-party software to perform lower-level functions such as spatial searching or orbit determination. We report the direct detection of radiation pressure on the asteroid 2009 BD, one of the smallest multi-opposition near-Earth objects currently known, with H ~ 28.4. Under the purely gravitational model of NEODyS the object is currently considered a possible future impactor, with impact solutions starting in 2071. The detection of a radiation-related acceleration allows us to estimate an Area to Mass Ratio (AMR) for the object, that can be converted (under some assumptions) into a range of possible values for its average density. Our result AMR = (2.97 \pm 0.33) x 10^(-4) m^2 kg^(-1) is compatible with the object being of natural origin, and it is narrow enough to exclude a man-made nature. The possible origin of this object, its future observability, and the importance of radiation pressure in the impact monitoring process, are also discussed., To be submitted for refereed publication. We present results from an observing campaign of 25143 Itokawa performed with the 2.2 m telescope of the University of Hawaii between November 2000 and September 2001. The main goal of this paper is to determine the absolute magnitude H and the slope parameter G of the phase function with high accuracy for use in determining the geometric albedo of Itokawa. We found a value of H = 19.40 and a value of G = 0.21.

A four-body orbit solution for the Pluto system yields GM values of 870.3 +/- 3.7, 101.4 +/- 2.8, 0.039 +/- 0.034, and 0.021 +/- 0.042 km3 sec-2 for Pluto, Charon, Nix, and Hydra, respectively. Assuming a Charon-like density of 1.63 gm cm-3, the implied diameters for Nix and Hydra are 88 and 72 km, leading to visual geometric albedos of 0.08 and 0.18, respectively, though with considerable uncertainty. The eccentricity of Charon's orbit has a significant nonzero value; however, the 0.030 +/- 0.009 deg yr-1 rate at which the line of apsides precesses is insufficient to explain the difference in the longitude of periapsis seen in the orbits fitted to the 1992-1993 and 2002-2003 data sets. The mean orbital periods for Hydra, Nix, and Charon are in the ratios of 6.064 +/- 0.006 : 3.991 +/- 0.007 : 1, but we have not identified any resonant arguments that would indicate the existence of a mean motion resonance between any pairs of satellites., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables

The Panoramic Survey Telescope And Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) under development at the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy is creating the first fully automated end-to-end Moving Object Processing System (MOPS) in the world. It will be capable of identifying detections of moving objects in our solar system and linking those detections within and between nights, attributing those detections to known objects, calculating initial and differentially-corrected orbits for linked detections, precovering detections when they exist, and orbit identification. Here we describe new kd-tree and variable-tree algorithms that allow fast, efficient, scalable linking of intra and inter-night detections. Using a pseudo-realistic simulation of the Pan-STARRS survey strategy incorporating weather, astrometric accuracy and false detections we have achieved nearly 100% efficiency and accuracy for intra-night linking and nearly 100% efficiency for inter-night linking within a lunation. At realistic sky-plane densities for both real and false detections the intra-night linking of detections into `tracks' currently has an accuracy of 0.3%. Successful tests of the MOPS on real source detections from the Spacewatch asteroid survey indicate that the MOPS is capable of identifying asteroids in real data., Comment: Accepted to Icarus

In this work we propose the Amor-type asteroid 2009 WN25 as the likely progenitor of the November i-Draconids (NID, IAU#392), a recently detected weak annual meteoroid stream. We first describe our recovery and follow-up effort to obtain timely ground based astrometry with large aperture telescopes, and ensure that 2009 WN25 would not become lost. We then discuss the possible parent-stream association, using its updated orbit to model the ejection of dust particles from the surface of the parent body and match the observed properties of the stream., Submitted to Icarus

The Mars flyby of C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) represented a unique opportunity for imaging a long-period comet and resolving its nucleus and rotation state. Because of the small encounter distance and the high relative velocity, the goal of successfully observing C/2013 A1 from the Mars orbiting spacecraft posed strict accuracy requirements on the comet’s ephemeris. These requirements were hard to meet, as comets are known for being highly unpredictable: astrometric observations can be significantly biased and nongravitational perturbations affect comet trajectories. Therefore, even prior to the encounter, we remeasured a couple of hundred astrometric images obtained with ground-based and Earth-orbiting telescopes. We also observed the comet with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on 2014 October 7. In particular, these HiRISE observations were decisive in securing the trajectory and revealed that out-of-plane nongravitational perturbations were larger than previously assumed. Though the resulting ephemeris predictions for the Mars encounter allowed observations of the comet from the Mars orbiting spacecraft, post-encounter observations show a discrepancy with the pre-encounter trajectory. We reconcile this discrepancy by employing the Rotating Jet Model, which is a higher fidelity model for cometary nongravitational perturbations and provides an estimate of C/2013 A1’s spin pole ( RA , DEC ) = ( 63 ° , 14 ° ) .

Photometric data on 17 binary near-Earth asteroids (15 of them are certain detections, two are probables) were analysed and characteristic properties of the near-Earth asteroid (NEA) binary population were inferred. We have found that binary systems with a secondary-to-primary mean diameter ratio D s / D p ⩾ 0.18 concentrate among NEAs smaller than 2 km in diameter; the abundance of such binaries decreases significantly among larger NEAs. Secondaries show an upper size limit of D s = 0.5 – 1 km . Systems with D s / D p ⩽ 0.5 are abundant but larger satellites are significantly less common. Primaries have spheroidal shapes and they rotate rapidly, with periods concentrating between 2.2 to 2.8 h and with a tail of the distribution up to ∼4 h. The fast rotators are close to the critical spin for rubble piles with bulk densities about 2 g/cm3. Orbital periods show an apparent cut-off at P orb ∼ 11 h ; closer systems with shorter orbital periods have not been discovered, which is consistent with the Roche limit for strengthless bodies. Secondaries are more elongated on average than primaries. Most, but not all, of their rotations appear to be synchronized with the orbital motion; nonsynchronous secondary rotations may occur especially among wider systems with P orb > 20 h. The specific total angular momentum of most of the binary systems is similar to within ±20% and close to the angular momentum of a sphere with the same total mass and density, rotating at the disruption limit; this suggests that the binaries were created by mechanism(s) related to rotation near the critical limit and that they neither gained nor lost significant amounts of angular momentum during or since formation. A comparison with six small asynchronous binaries detected in the main belt of asteroids suggests that the population extends beyond the region of terrestrial planets, but with characteristics shifted to larger sizes and longer periods. The estimated mean proportion of binaries with D s / D p ⩾ 0.18 among NEAs larger than 0.3 km is 15 ± 4 % . Among fastest rotating NEAs larger than 0.3 km with periods between 2.2 and 2.8 h, the mean proportion of such binaries is (66+10−12)%.

International audience; Every three years the IAU/IAG Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements revises tables giving the directions of the north poles of rotation and the prime meridians of the planets, satellites, and asteroids. This report introduces a system of cartographic coordinates for asteroids and comets. A topographic reference surface for Mars is recommended. Tables for the rotational elements of the planets and satellites and size and shape of the planets and satellites are not included, since there were no changes to the values. They are available in the previous report (Celest. Mech. Dyn. Astron., 82, 83 110, 2002), a version of which is also available on a web site.

We have observed the 2002 August 21 occultation by Pluto of theR ¼ 15:7mag star P131.1, using 0.5 s cadence observations in integrated white light with the Williams College frame-transfer, rapid-readout CCD at the 2.24 m University of Hawaii telescope. We detected an occultation that lasted 5 minutes, 9:1 � 0:7 s between half-light points. The ‘‘kinks’’ in the ingress and egress parts of the curve that were apparent in 1988 had become much less pronounced by the time of the two 2002 occultations that were observed, indicating a major change in the structure ofPluto’satmosphere.AnalysisofourlightcurvesshowsthatthepressureinPluto’satmospherehasincreasedatall the altitudes that we probed. Essentially, the entire pressure scale has moved up in altitude, increasing by a factor of 2 since 1988. Spikes in our light curve reveal vertical structure in Pluto’s atmosphere at unprecedentedly high resolution.Wehaveconfirmationofourspikesatlowertimeresolutionaspartofobservationsoftheemersionmade at 1.4 s and 2.4 s cadence with the 3.67 m AEOS telescope on Maui.

We present evidence that the failure to account for proper motion is responsible for most of the regional biases seen in the astrometry of asteroids produced by the Pan-STARRS sky survey, as well as the 0.02 arcsec northward bias seen in our own Apophis astrometry.

We present lightcurves and analysis for four new monolithic fast-rotating asteroids: 2000 AG 6 , 2000 DO 8 , 2000 EB 14 , and 2000 HB 24 . Their rotation periods of 4.60, 1.30, 107.47, and 13.05 min place them well below the critical threshold for the rotation rate of strengthless prolate ellipsoids, as we demonstrate. These four objects join the five previously identified fast-rotating asteroids. The sharp segregation in spin rates between these nine objects and asteroids with more typical spin rates is somewhat puzzling. No observed objects larger than about 200 m spin with rates faster than the critical rate for strengthless prolate ellipsoids, while no objects smaller than 200 m have shown spin rates slower than this critical limit. We hypothesize that these small, fast-rotating objects are representative of the building blocks of the “rubble pile” asteroids and are in fact derived from impacts into already existing “rubble piles.”

We provide a scheme to correct asteroid astrometric observations for star catalog systematic errors due to inaccurate star positions and proper motions. As reference we select the most accurate stars in the PPMXL catalog, i.e., those based on 2MASS astrometry. We compute position and proper motion corrections for 19 of the most used star catalogs. The use of these corrections provides better ephemeris predictions and improves the error statistics of astrometric observations, e.g., by removing most of the regional systematic errors previously seen in Pan-STARRS PS1 asteroid astrometry. The correction table is publicly available at ftp://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/ssd/debias/debias_2014.tgz and can be freely used in orbit determination algorithms to obtain more reliable asteroid trajectories.

We present our astrometric observations of the small near-Earth object 2011~MD ($H \sim 28.0$), obtained after its very close fly-by to Earth in June 2011. Our set of observations extends the observational arc to $73$ days, and together with the published astrometry obtained around the Earth fly-by allows a direct detection of the effect of radiation pressure on the object, with a confidence of $5\sigma$. The detection can be used to put constraints on the density of the object, pointing to either an unexpectedly low value of $\rho = (640 \pm 330) \mbox{ kg} / \mbox{m} ^3$ ($68\%$ confidence interval) if we assume a typical probability distribution for the unknown albedo, or to an unusually high reflectivity of its surface. This result may have important implications both in terms of impact hazard from small objects and in light of a possible retrieval of this target., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters

In this paper we present current development status of our Asteroid Multi-band Imaging CAmera (AMICA) for the Japan-US joint asteroid sample return mission MUSES-C. The launch of the spacecraft is planned around the end of 2002 and the whole mission period till sample retrieval on Earth will be approximately five years. The nominal target is the asteroid 1998SF36, one of the Amor-type asteroids. The AMICA specifications for the mission are shown here along with its ground-based and inflight calibration methods. We also describe the observational scenario at the asteroid, in relation to scientific goals.

(20461) 1999 LD 31 is one of the few objects with retrograde orbits listed in the Minor Planet Catalog and thus designated as asteroids rather than comets. Observations of (20461) 1999 LD 31 made in March 2000 with the 10-m Keck I telescope indicate an optical albedo, p v , of 0.03±0.01 and a diameter of 14±3 km. The low albedo and results of spectrophotometry carried out with the University of Hawaii 2.2-m and the UK Infrared 3.8-m telescopes are indicative of a D-type asteroid or cometary nucleus. These results, together with the nature of its orbit, suggest that (20461) 1999 LD 31 is an example of an object originating in the outer Solar System that has evolved into an orbit characteristic of a Halley-type comet and may be the nucleus of an extinct or dormant comet.

Over the course of three years, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) will carry out a survey of the entire sky at J (1.25 μm), H (1.65 μm), and Ks (2.17 μm) from telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres. The initial public release of the survey data spans the period between June 7, 1997, and January 30, 1998, and covers approximately 6% of the sky. Asteroids and comets having known orbits were identified on the basis of their predicted positions as part of the pipeline processing of the data. The 2MASS sources associated with asteroids and comets are being compiled into a 2MASS Asteroid Catalog and 2MASS Comet Catalog. These catalogs are now available and will be updated at regular intervals as the survey progresses. The initial catalogs contain observations of 1054 asteroids and 2 comets, respectively. Near-infrared colors of asteroids of different taxa are shown, and an attempt is made to derive a simple compositional map of the asteroid belt, which is in agreement with previous work. The color–color distributions of Koronis asteroid family members are found to be distinct from those of other families in this sample. It is suggested that the Koronis parent body was differentiated and that different mineralogies had segregated on spatial scales much larger than 10 km prior to its catastrophic disruption. Two asteroids exhibiting unusual colors are examined, and a cautionary note is sounded about interpreting the colors of individual asteroids without considering the possibility of contamination by a background source.

The knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) is still incomplete and confused. To investigate their physical properties, we are continuing the TNO observational program started in 1997 at ESO in La Silla, Chile with the 3.5 m New Technology Telescope. In February 1999, broadband optical colors were obtained for eight new objects: 1993 FW, 1995 HM5, 1997 CQ29, 1997 CS29, 1997 CT29, 1997 CU29, 1998 FS144, and 1998 WH24. Particular attention has been paid to the observations and data reduction of these faint objects. These new data increase the available statistical sample and will help us to understand the surface properties and the mechanisms of the surface modification of the TNOs. The observed objects present a wide spread of colors. The color distribution does not show any bimodality. Knowledge of the colors of a large number of these objects is important to understand this population, which represents an important reservoir of primordial material.

The Edgeworth–Kuiper Belt (EKB) objects are fossil remnants of the formation of the Solar System and they represent an important reservoir of primordial, thermally unprocessed material. The study of these objects has rapidly evolved in the last few years. New observational work allowed planetary scientists to investigate evolutionary and dynamical processes in the outer solar system, putting some constraints on, for example, the origin of comets and the accretion of planetesimals. The chemical and physical information on this population is still very poor: intensive observational studies are needed. For this reason we started a spectrophotometric observation program in 1997 at ESO with the NTT telescope to investigate the EKB. We present the obtained results for six objects (1994 JR 1 , 1994 TB, 1995 QY 9 , 1996 TL 66 , 1996 TO 66 , and 1996 TP 66 ). We analyzed all the B, V, R, and I data available in the literature to investigate some bulk properties. We found indications of a complex and inhomogeneous population.

We present observations of 40 asteroids taken mostly from Table Mountain Observatory, mostly from 1982, but with a few observations from late 1981 and early 1983. Several new or substantially revised periods are reported. Perhaps most interesting are observations of two asteroids, 288 Glauke and 3288 Seleucus, which are in “tumbling,” or nonprincipal axis rotation, states. Glauke has the longest rotation period known, ∼1200 h. Absolute photometry was performed on most objects, allowing us to derive phase relations and absolute magnitudes. For objects where these results are superior to previous values, we have revised the IRAS albedos using our absolute magnitude ( H ) values.
