The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft successfully performed the first test of a kinetic impactor for asteroid deflection by impacting Dimorphos, the secondary of near-Earth binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, and changing the orbital period of Dimorphos. A change in orbital period of approximately 7 minutes was expected if the incident momentum from the DART spacecraft was directly transferred to the asteroid target in a perfectly inelastic collision, but studies of the probable impact conditions and asteroid properties indicated that a considerable momentum enhancement ($\beta$) was possible. In the years prior to impact, we used lightcurve observations to accurately determine the pre-impact orbit parameters of Dimorphos with respect to Didymos. Here we report the change in the orbital period of Dimorphos as a result of the DART kinetic impact to be -33.0 +/- 1.0 (3$\sigma$) minutes. Using new Earth-based lightcurve and radar observations, two independent approaches determined identical values for the change in the orbital period. This large orbit period change suggests that ejecta contributed a significant amount of momentum to the asteroid beyond what the DART spacecraft carried., Comment: Accepted by Nature

We present a new optical (400-950nm) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-31b (M=0.48 MJ; R= 1.54 RJ; P=3.41 days), obtained by combining four transits observations. These transits were observed with IMACS on the Magellan Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the ACCESS project. We investigate the presence of clouds/hazes in the upper atmosphere of this planet as well as the contribution of stellar activity on the observed features. In addition, we search for absorption features of the alkali elements Na I and K I, with particular focus on K I, for which there have been two previously published disagreeing results. Observations with HST/STIS detected K I, whereas ground-based low- and high-resolution observations did not. We use equilibrium and non-equilibrium chemistry retrievals to explore the planetary and stellar parameter space of the system with our optical data combined with existing near-IR observations. Our best-fit model is that with a scattering slope consistent with a Rayleigh slope (alpha=5.3+2.9-3.1), high-altitude clouds at a log cloud top pressure of -3.6+2.7-2.1 bars, and possible muted H2O features. We find that our observations support other ground-based claims of no K I. Clouds are likely why signals like H2O are extremely muted and Na or K cannot be detected. We then juxtapose our Magellan/IMACS transmission spectrum with existing VLT/FORS2, HST/WFC3, HST/STIS, and Spitzer observations to further constrain the optical-to-infrared atmospheric features of the planet. We report the confirmation and mass determination of three hot Jupiters discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission: HIP 65Ab (TOI-129, TIC-201248411) is an ultra-short-period Jupiter orbiting a bright (V = 11.1 mag) K4-dwarf every 0.98 days. It is a massive 3.213 ± 0.078 MJ planet in a grazing transit configuration with an impact parameter of b = 1.17−0.08+0.10. As a result the radius is poorly constrained, 2.03−0.49+0.61RJ. The planet’s distance to its host star is less than twice the separation at which it would be destroyed by Roche lobe overflow. It is expected to spiral into HIP 65A on a timescale ranging from 80 Myr to a few gigayears, assuming a reduced tidal dissipation quality factor of Qs′ = 107 − 109. We performed a full phase-curve analysis of the TESS data and detected both illumination- and ellipsoidal variations as well as Doppler boosting. HIP 65A is part of a binary stellar system, with HIP 65B separated by 269 AU (3.95 arcsec on sky). TOI-157b (TIC 140691463) is a typical hot Jupiter with a mass of 1.18 ± 0.13 MJ and a radius of 1.29 ± 0.02 RJ. It has a period of 2.08 days, which corresponds to a separation of just 0.03 AU. This makes TOI-157 an interesting system, as the host star is an evolved G9 sub-giant star (V = 12.7). TOI-169b (TIC 183120439) is a bloated Jupiter orbiting a V = 12.4 G-type star. It has a mass of 0.79 ±0.06 MJ and a radius of 1.09−0.05+0.08RJ. Despite having the longest orbital period (P = 2.26 days) of the three planets, TOI-169b receives the most irradiation and is situated on the edge of the Neptune desert. All three host stars are metal rich with [Fe / H] ranging from 0.18 to0.24.

Context. The Multi-site All-Sky CAmeRA (MASCARA) and bRing are both photometric ground-based instruments with multiple stations that rely on interline charge-coupled devices with wide-field lenses to monitor bright stars in the local sky for variability. MASCARA has already discovered several planets in the northern sky, which are among the brightest known transiting hot Jupiter systems. Aims. In this paper, we aim to characterize a transiting planetary candidate in the southern skies found in the combined MASCARA and bRing data sets of HD 85628, an A7V star of V = 8.2 mag at a distance 172 pc, to establish its planetary nature. Methods. The candidate was originally detected in data obtained jointly with the MASCARA and bRing instruments using a Box Least-Square search for transit events. Further photometry was taken by the 0.7 m Chilean-Hungarian Automated Telescope (CHAT), and radial velocity measurements with the Fiber Dual Echelle Optical Spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory 1.0 m Telescope. High-resolution spectra during a transit were taken with the CTIO high-resolution spectrometer (CHIRON) on the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System 1.5 m telescope to target the Doppler shadow of the candidate. Results. We confirm the existence of a hot Jupiter transiting the bright A7V star HD 85628, which we co-designate as MASCARA-4b and bRing-1b. It is in an orbit of 2.824 days, with an estimated planet radius of 1.53−0.04+0.07 RJup and an estimated planet mass of 3.1 ± 0.9 MJup, putting it well within the planetary regime. The CHAT observations show a partial transit, reducing the probability that the transit was around a faint background star. The CHIRON observations show a clear Doppler shadow, implying that the transiting object is in a retrograde orbit with |λ| =244.9−3.6+2.7°. The planet orbits at a distance of 0.047 ± 0.004 AU from the star and has a zero-albedo equilibrium temperature of 2100 ± 100 K. In addition, we find that HD 85628 has a previously unreported stellar companion star in the Gaia DR2 data demonstrating common proper motion and parallax at 4.3′′ separation (projected separation ~740 AU), and with absolute magnitude consistent with being a K/M dwarf. Conclusions. MASCARA-4 b/bRing-1 b is the brightest transiting hot Jupiter known to date in a retrograde orbit. It further confirms that planets in near-polar and retrograde orbits are more common around early-type stars. Due to its high apparent brightness and short orbital period, the system is particularly well suited for further atmospheric characterization.

We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary E32 in the globular cluster 47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The system has an orbital period of 40.9 d, a markedly eccentric orbit with e = 0.24, and is shown to be a member of or a recent escaper from the cluster. We obtain Mp = 0.862 ± 0.005 M, Rp = 1.183 ± 0.003 R, Lp = 1.65 ± 0.05 L for the primary and Ms = 0.827 ± 0.005 M, Rs = 1.004 ± 0.004 R, Ls = 1.14 ± 0.04 L for the secondary. Based on these data and on an earlier analysis of the binary V69 in 47 Tuc, we measure the distance to the cluster from the distance moduli of the component stars, and, independently, from a colour – surface brightness calibration. We obtain 4.55 ± 0.03 and 4.50 ± 0.07 kpc, respectively – values compatible within 1 σ with recent estimates based on Gaia DR2 parallaxes. By comparing the M–R diagram of the two binaries and the colour–magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc to Dartmouth model isochrones we estimate the age of the cluster to be 12.0 ± 0.5 Gyr, and the helium abundance of the cluster to be Y ≈ 0.25., Erratum published in volume 494, issue 1, pages 846-9, May 2020. We present a new ground-based visual transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b, obtained as part of the ACCESS Survey. The spectrum was derived from four transits observed between 2015 and 2018, with combined wavelength coverage between 5,300 \r{A}-9,000 \r{A} and an average photometric precision of 708 ppm in 230 \r{A} bins. We perform an atmospheric retrieval of our transmission spectrum combined with literature HST/WFC3 observations to search for the presence of clouds/hazes as well as Na, K, H$\alpha$, and $\rm H_2O$ planetary absorption and stellar spot contamination over a combined spectral range of 5,318 \r{A}-16,420 \r{A}. We do not detect a statistically significant presence of Na I or K I alkali lines, or H$\alpha$ in the atmosphere of WASP-43b. We find that the observed transmission spectrum can be best explained by a combination of heterogeneities on the photosphere of the host star and a clear planetary atmosphere with $\rm H_2O$. This model yields a log-evidence of $8.26\pm0.42$ higher than a flat (featureless) spectrum. In particular, the observations marginally favor the presence of large, low-contrast spots over the four ACCESS transit epochs with an average covering fraction $f_\text{het} = 0.27^{+0.42}_{-0.16}$ and temperature contrast $\Delta T = 132\text{ K} \pm 132\text{ K}$. Within the planet's atmosphere, we recover a log $\rm H_2O$ volume mixing ratio of $-2.78^{+1.38}_{-1.47}$, which is consistent with previous $\rm H_2O$ abundance determinations for this planet., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables. We present the discovery of TYC9191-519-1b (TOI-150b, TIC 271893367) and HD271181b (TOI-163b, TIC 179317684), two hot Jupiters initially detected using 30-minute cadence Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite TESS photometry from Sector 1 and thoroughly characterized through follow-up photometry (CHAT, Hazelwood, LCO/CTIO, El Sauce, TRAPPIST-S), high-resolution spectroscopy (FEROS, CORALIE) and speckle imaging (Gemini/DSSI), confirming the planetary nature of the two signals. A simultaneous joint fit of photometry and radial velocity using a new fitting package juliet reveals that TOI-150b is a $1.254\pm0.016\ R_J$, massive ($2.61^{+0.19}_{-0.12}\ M_J$) hot Jupiter in a $5.857$-day orbit, while TOI-163b is an inflated ($R_P$ = $1.478^{+0.022}_{-0.029} R_J$, $M_P$ = $1.219\pm0.11 M_J$) hot Jupiter on a $P$ = $4.231$-day orbit; both planets orbit F-type stars. A particularly interesting result is that TOI-150b shows an eccentric orbit ($e=0.262^{+0.045}_{-0.037}$), which is quite uncommon among hot Jupiters. We estimate that this is consistent, however, with the circularization timescale which is slightly larger than the age of the system. These two hot Jupiters are both prime candidates for further characterization --- in particular, both are excellent candidates for determining spin-orbit alignments via the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect and for characterizing atmospheric thermal structures using secondary eclipse observations considering they are both located closely to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Continuous Viewing Zone (CVZ)., referee report submitted to MNRAS

We report on the confirmation of a transiting giant planet around the relatively hot (Teff = 6801 $\pm$ 56 K) star HD2685, whose transit signal was detected in Sector 1 data of the TESS mission. We confirmed the planetary nature of the transit signal by using Doppler velocimetric measurements with CHIRON, CORALIE and FEROS, as well as photometric data with CHAT and LCOGT. From the photometry and radial velocities joint analysis, we derived the following parameters for HD2685 $b$: $P$=4.12692$\pm$0.00004 days, M$_P$=1.18 $\pm$ 0.09 $M_J$ and $R_P$=1.44 $\pm$ 0.01 $R_J$. This system is a typical example of an inflated transiting Hot-Jupiter in a circular orbit. Given the host star apparent visual magnitude ($V$ = 9.6 mag), this is one of the brightest known stars hosting a transiting Hot-Jupiter, and a good example of the upcoming systems that will be detected by TESS during the two-year primary mission. This is also an excellent target for future ground and space based atmospheric characterization as well as a good candidate for measuring the projected spin-orbit misalignment angle via the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect., Comment: Submitted for publication to A&A

We present a new ground-based optical transmission spectrum of the ultrahot Jupiter WASP-103b ($T_{eq} = 2484$K). Our transmission spectrum is the result of combining five new transits from the ACCESS survey and two new transits from the LRG-BEASTS survey with a reanalysis of three archival Gemini/GMOS transits and one VLT/FORS2 transit. Our combined 11-transit transmission spectrum covers a wavelength range of 3900--9450A with a median uncertainty in the transit depth of 148 parts-per-million, which is less than one atmospheric scale height of the planet. In our retrieval analysis of WASP-103b's combined optical and infrared transmission spectrum, we find strong evidence for unocculted bright regions ($4.3\sigma$) and weak evidence for H$_2$O ($1.9\sigma$), HCN ($1.7\sigma$), and TiO ($2.1\sigma$), which could be responsible for WASP-103b's observed temperature inversion. Our optical transmission spectrum shows significant structure that is in excellent agreement with the extensively studied ultrahot Jupiter WASP-121b, for which the presence of VO has been inferred. For WASP-103b, we find that VO can only provide a reasonable fit to the data if its abundance is implausibly high and we do not account for stellar activity. Our results highlight the precision that can be achieved by ground-based observations and the impacts that stellar activity from F-type stars can have on the interpretation of exoplanet transmission spectra., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. We present a new ground-based visible transmission spectrum of the high-gravity, hot Jupiter HAT-P-23b, obtained as part of the ACCESS project. We derive the spectrum from five transits observed between 2016 and 2018, with combined wavelength coverage between 5200 {\AA} - 9269 {\AA} in 200 {\AA} bins, and with a median precision of 247 ppm per bin. HAT-P-23b's relatively high surface gravity (g ~ 30 m/s^2), combined with updated stellar and planetary parameters from Gaia DR2, gives a 5-scale-height signal of 384 ppm for a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. Bayesian models favor a clear atmosphere for the planet with the tentative presence of TiO, after simultaneously modeling stellar contamination, using spots parameter constraints from photometry. If confirmed, HAT-P-23b would be the first example of a high-gravity gas giant with a clear atmosphere observed in transmission at optical/NIR wavelengths; therefore, we recommend expanding observations to the UV and IR to confirm our results and further characterize this planet. We report the discovery of K2-287b, a Saturn mass planet orbiting a G-dwarf with a period of $P \approx 15$ days. First uncovered as a candidate using K2 campaign 15 data, follow-up photometry and spectroscopy were used to determine a mass of $M_P = 0.317 \pm 0.026$ $M_J$, radius $R_P = 0.833 \pm 0.013$ $R_J$, period $P = 14.893291 \pm 0.000025$ days and eccentricity $e = 0.476 \pm 0.026$. The host star is a metal-rich $V=11.410 \pm 0.129$ mag G dwarf for which we estimate a mass $M_* = 1.056$ $M_\odot$, radius $R_* = 1.07 \pm 0.01$ $R_\odot$, metallicity [Fe/H] = $0.20 \pm 0.05$ and $T_{eff} = 5673 \pm 75$ K. This warm eccentric planet with a time-averaged equilibrium temperature of $T_{eq} \approx 800$ K adds to the small sample of giant planets orbiting nearby stars whose structure is not expected to be affected by stellar irradiation. The short period ($0.94$-day) transiting exoplanet WASP-19b is an exceptional target for transmission spectroscopy studies, due to its relatively large atmospheric scale-height ($\sim 500$ km) and equilibrium temperature ($\sim 2100$ K). Here we report on six precise spectroscopic Magellan/IMACS observations, five of which target the full optical window from $0.45-0.9\mu$m and one targeting the $0.4-0.55\mu$m blue-optical range. Five of these datasets are consistent with a transmission spectrum without any significant spectral features, while one shows a significant slope as a function of wavelength, which we interpret as arising from photospheric heterogeneities in the star. Coupled with HST/WFC3 infrared observations, our optical/near-infrared measurements point to the presence of high altitude clouds in WASP-19b's atmosphere in agreement with previous studies. Using a semi-analytical retrieval approach, considering both planetary and stellar spectral features, we find a water abundance consistent with solar for WASP-19b and strong evidence for sub-solar abundances for optical absorbers such as TiO and Na; no strong optical slope is detected, which suggests that if hazes are present, they are much weaker than previously suggested. Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) of the Carnegie Institution of Science has been operating in Chile for about 50 years, currently operating four main telescopes. Carnegie operates the two 6.5 meter Magellan telescopes on behalf of a partnership that includes a consortium of universities. The Magellan Telescopes were commissioned in 2000 and 2002 and offer the consortium users a suite of twelve instruments. In this paper we will first provide a brief description of the science, technical and administrative structure of the observatory. We will then present an updated review of the Magellan telescopes operations and maintenance. Details on status and performances of the instruments will be given. We will finally cover the operations of the duPont 2.5 meter and Swope 1 meter telescopes including the current and future collaboration with the two hemisphere surveys SDSS-IV and SDSS-V.

Megacam is a large-format optical camera that can be operated at the f/5 Cassegrain foci of the MMT on Mount Hopkins, Arizona, and the Magellan Clay telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. Megacam's focal plane is composed of 36 closely packed e2v CCD42-90 CCDs, each with 2048 × 4608 pixels, assembled in an 18,432 × 18,432 array. Two additional CCD42-90s are provided for autoguiding and focus control. The CCDs have 13.5 μm square pixels that subtend at the f/5 foci, yielding a 25' × 25' field-of-view. The camera system includes a focal plane shutter, two filter wheels, two liquid nitrogen reservoirs, a central chamber that holds the CCD mosaic array, and two electronics boxes. Megacam is equipped with a variety of broadband and narrowband filters. Software features include automatic calculation of twilight flat exposure times.

Nearly every massive galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in its nucleus. SMBH masses are millions to billions $M_{\odot}$, and they correlate with properties of spheroids of their host galaxies. While the SMBH growth channels, mergers and gas accretion, are well established, their origin remains uncertain: they could have either emerged from massive "seeds" ($10^5-10^6 M_{\odot}$) formed by direct collapse of gas clouds in the early Universe or from smaller ($100 M_{\odot}$) black holes, end-products of first stars. The latter channel would leave behind numerous intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs, $10^2-10^5 M_{\odot}$). Although many IMBH candidates have been identified, none is accepted as definitive, thus their very existence is still debated. We present new eclipse observations for one of the hottest "hot Jupiters" WASP-18b, for which previously published data from HST WFC3 and Spitzer have led to radically conflicting conclusions about the composition of this planet's atmosphere. We measure eclipse depths of $0.15\pm0.02\%$ at $Ks$ and $0.07\pm0.01\%$ at $z'$ bands. Using the VSTAR line-by-line radiative transfer code and both these new observations with previously published data, we derive a new model of the planetary atmosphere. We have varied both the metallicity and C/O ratio in our modelling, and find no need for the extreme metallicity suggested by Sheppard et al.(2017). Our best fitting models slightly underestimate the emission at $z'$ band and overestimate the observed flux at $Ks$-band. To explain these discrepancies, we examine the impact on the planetary emission spectrum of the presence of several types of hazes which could form on the night-side of the planet. Our $Ks$ band eclipse flux measurement is lower than expected from clear atmosphere models and this could be explained by a haze particles larger than 0.2 $\mu$m with the optical properties of Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$, CaTiO$_{3}$ or MgSiO$_{3}$. We report the discovery of four short period extrasolar planets transiting moderately bright stars from photometric measurements of the HATSouth network coupled to additional spectroscopic and photometric follow-up observations. While the planet masses range from 0.26 to 0.90 M$_J$, the radii are all approximately a Jupiter radii, resulting in a wide range of bulk densities. The orbital period of the planets range from 2.7d to 4.7d, with HATS-43b having an orbit that appears to be marginally non-circular (e= 0.173$\pm$0.089). HATS-44 is notable for a high metallicity ([Fe/H]= 0.320$\pm$0.071). Comet 85P/Boethin was selected as the original comet target for the Deep Impact extended mission, EPOXI . Because this comet had been only observed at two apparitions in 1975 and 1986 and consequently had a large ephemeris error, an early intense recovery effort similar to that of 1P/Halley was undertaken beginning in 2005 using the ESO Very Large Telescopes (VLTs) in a distant comet program. These were challenging observations because of the low galactic latitude, and an error ellipse (the line of variations) that was larger than the CCD FOV, and the comet was not seen. Dedicated recovery observing time was awarded on the Subaru telescope in April and May 2006, and June 2007, in addition to time on the VLT and Canada–France–Hawaii telescopes during July–August 2007 with wide field mosaics and mosaicing techniques. The limiting V magnitudes from these observing runs ranged between 25.7 and 27.3 and again the comet was not seen in the individual nights. A new image processing technique was developed to stack images over extended runs and runs after distorting them to account for dilations and rotations in the line of variations using modifications of the world coordinate system. A candidate at V ∼ 27.3 was found in the CFHT data along the LOV, 2.5′ west of the nominal ephemeris position. The EPOXI mission was unwilling to re-target the spacecraft without a confirmation. Additional time was secured using the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Gemini South 8-m telescope, the Clay and Baade (Magellan 6.5 m), CTIO 4 m, and SOAR 4 m telescopes during 2007 September and October A composite image made by stacking the new data showed no plausible candidate nucleus to a limiting magnitude of V = 28.5, corresponding to a nucleus radius between 0.1 and 0.2 km (assuming an albedo of 0.04). The comet was declared lost, presumably having disintegrated. Searches in the WISE data set revealed no debris trail, but no constraints on the possible time of disruption can be made. NASA approved the trajectory correction maneuver to go to Comet 103P/Hartley 2 on 2007 November 1. Many observers searched for the comet as it came to its December 2008 perihelion, but no trace of the nucleus was found. Based on observations collected at the Very Large Telescope, Chile, in part on data collected at Subaru Telescope, which is operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, in part using data gathered with the 6.5 m Magellan Telescopes located at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, in part on observations obtained with MegaPrime/MegaCam, a joint project of CFHT and CEA/DAPNIA, at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) which is operated by the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada, the Institut National des Science de l’Univers of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) of France, and the University of Hawaii, in part using data collected at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, which are operated by the Association for Research in Astronomy, under contract with the National Science Foundation, and in part on observations obtained at the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope, which is a joint project of the Ministerio da Ciencia, Tecnologia, e Inovacao (MCTI) da Republica Federativa do Brasil, the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and Michigan State University (MSU). GJ 1214b is the most studied sub-Neptune exoplanet to date. Recent measurements have shown its near-infrared transmission spectrum to be flat, pointing to a high-altitude opacity source in the exoplanet's atmosphere, either equilibrium condensate clouds or photochemical hazes. Many photometric observations have been reported in the optical by different groups, though simultaneous measurements spanning the entire optical regime are lacking. We present an optical transmission spectrum ($4,500-9,260$\AA) of GJ 1214b in 14 bins measured with Magellan/IMACS repeatedly over three transits. We measure a mean planet-to-star radius ratio of ${R_{p}/R_{s} = 0.1146\pm{2\times10^{-4}}}$ and mean uncertainty of $\sigma(R_{p}/R_{s})=8.7\times10^{-4}$ in the spectral bins. The optical transit depths are shallower on average than observed in the near-infrared. We present a model for jointly incorporating the effects of a composite photosphere and atmospheric transmission (CPAT) through the exoplanet's limb, and use it to examine the cases of absorber and temperature heterogeneities in the stellar photosphere. We find the optical and near-infrared measurements are best explained by the combination of (1) photochemical haze in the exoplanetary atmosphere with a mode particle size $r=0.1~\mu$m and haze-forming efficiency $f_{haze}=10 \%$ and (2) faculae in the unocculted stellar disk with a temperature contrast $\Delta T=354^{+46}_{-46}$ K, assuming 3.2% surface coverage. The CPAT model can be used to assess potential contributions of heterogeneous stellar photospheres to observations of exoplanet transmission spectra, which will be important for searches for spectral features in the optical., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We observed occultations by Pluto during a predicted series of events in 2014 July with the 1 m telescope of the Mt. John Observatory in New Zealand. The predictions were based on updated astrometry obtained in the previous months at the USNO, CTIO, and Lowell Observatories. We successfully detected occultations by Pluto of an R = 18 mag star on July 23 (14:23:32 ± 00:00:04 UTC to 14:25:30 ± 00:00:04 UTC), with a drop of 75% of the unocculted stellar signal, and of an R = 17 star on July 24 (11:41:30 ± 00:00:08 UTC to 11:43:28 ± 00:00:08 UTC), with a drop of 80% of the unocculted stellar signal, both with 20 s exposures with our frame-transfer Portable Occultation, Eclipse, and Transit System. Since Pluto had a geocentric velocity of 22.51 km s^(−1) on July 23 and 22.35 km s^(−1) on July 24, these intervals yield limits on the chord lengths (surface and lower atmosphere) of 2700 ± 130 km and 2640 ± 250 km, respectively, indicating that the events were near central, and therefore provide astrometric constraints on the prediction method. Our coordinated observations with the 4 m AAT in Australia on July 23 and the 6.5 m Magellan/Clay on Las Campanas, the 4.1 m Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope on Cerro Pachön, the 2.5 m DuPont on Las Campanas (LCO), the 0.6 m SARA-South on Cerro Tololo of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA), the MPI/ESO 2.2 m on La Silla, and the 0.45 m Cerro Calán telescope and 0.36 telescope in Constitución in Chile on July 27 and 31, which would have provided higher-cadence observations for studies of Pluto's atmosphere, were largely foiled by clouds, but led to detection with the LCO Magellan/Clay and DuPont Telescopes on July 31 of the grazing occultation of a previously unknown 15th-magnitude star, completing the trio of occultations successfully observed and reported in this paper.

The Inamori-Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) is a wide-field, multipurpose imaging spectrograph on the Magellan-Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. IMACS has two channels—f/2 and f/4, each with an 8K × 8K pixel mosaic of CCD detectors, that service the widest range of capabilities of any major spectrograph. These include wide-field imaging at two scales, 0.20'' pixel-1 and 0.11'' pixel-1, single-object and multislit spectroscopy, integral-field spectroscopy with two 5'' × 7'' areas sampled at 0.20'' pixel-1 (Durham IFU), a multiobject echelle (MOE) capable of N ~ 10 simultaneous full-wavelength R ≈ 20,000 spectra, the Maryland-Magellan Tunable Filter (MMTF), and an image-slicing reformatter for dense-pack multislit work (GISMO). Spectral resolutions of 8 < R < 5000 are available through a combination of prisms, grisms, and gratings, and most modes are instantly available in any given IMACS configuration. IMACS has a spectroscopic efficiency over 50% in f/2 multislit mode (instrument only) and, by the AΩ figure of merit (telescope primary surface area times instrument field of view ), IMACS scores 5.7 m2 deg2, compared with 3.1 for VIMOS on VLT3 and with 2.0 for DEIMOS on Keck2. IMACS is the most versatile, and—for wide-field optical spectroscopy—the most powerful spectrograph on the planet.

We present an optical transmission spectrum of the atmosphere of WASP-4b obtained through observations of four transits with Magellan/IMACS. Using a Bayesian approach to atmospheric retrieval, we find no evidence for scattering or absorption features in our transit spectrum. Our models include a component to model the transit light source effect (spectral contamination from unocculted spots on the stellar photosphere), which we show can have a marked impact on the observed transmission spectrum for reasonable spot covering fractions (< 5%); this is the first such analysis for WASP-4b. We are also able to fit for the size and temperature contrast of spots observed during the second and third transits, finding evidence for both small, cool and large, warm spot-like features on the photosphere. Finally, we compare our results to those published by Huitson et al. (2017) using Gemini/GMOS and May et al. (2018) using IMACS, and find that our data are in agreement., 31 pages, 19 figures, 8 tables. Accepted for publication in AJ

We report the discovery of HATS-70b, a transiting brown dwarf at the deuterium burning limit. HATS-70b has a mass of Mp=12.9 +1.8/-1.6 Mjup and a radius of Rp=1.384 +0.079/-0.074 Rjup, residing in a close-in orbit with a period of 1.89 days. The host star is a M*=1.78 +/- 0.12 Msun A star rotating at vsini=40.61 +0.32/-0.35 km/s, enabling us to characterize the spectroscopic transit of the brown dwarf via Doppler tomography. We find that HATS-70b, like other massive planets and brown dwarfs previously sampled, orbits in a low projected-obliquity orbit with lambda=8.9 +5.6/-4.5 deg. The low obliquities of these systems is surprising given all brown dwarf and massive planets with obliquities measured orbit stars hotter than the Kraft break. This trend is tentatively inconsistent with dynamically chaotic migration for systems with massive companions, though the stronger tidal influence of these companions makes it difficult to draw conclusions on the primordial obliquity distribution of this population. We present new radial velocity measurements of the ultra-cool dwarf VB 10, which was recently announced to host a giant planet detected with astrometry. The new observations were obtained using optical spectrographs(MIKE/Magellan and ESPaDOnS/CHFT) and cover a 63% of the reported period of 270 days. We apply Least-squares periodograms to identify the most significant signals and evaluate their corresponding False Alarm Probabilities. We show that this method is the proper generalization to astrometric data because (1) it mitigates the coupling of the orbital parameters with the parallax and proper motion, and (2) it permits a direct generalization to include non-linear Keplerian parameters in a combined fit to astrometry and radial velocity data. In fact, our analysis of the astrometry alone uncovers the reported 270 d period and an even stronger signal at 50 days. We estimate the uncertainties in the parameters using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach. The nominal precision of the new Doppler measurements is about 150 s$^{-1}$ while their standard deviation is 250 ms$^{-1}$. However, the best fit solutions still have RMS of 200 ms$^{-1}$ indicating that the excess in variability is due to uncontrolled systematic errors rather than the candidate companions detected in the astrometry. Although the new data alone cannot rule-out the presence of a candidate, when combined with published radial velocity measurements, the False Alarm Probabilities of the best solutions grow to unacceptable levels strongly suggesting that the observed astrometric wobble is not due to an unseen companion., Comment: ApJ Letters, under revision. 15 pages, 3 figures and 2 tables. We describe a 3-dimensional, time-dependent Monte Carlo model developed to analyze the chemical and physical nature of a cometary gas coma. Our model includes the necessary physics and chemistry to recreate the conditions applicable to Comet Hale–Bopp when the comet was near 1 AU from the Sun. Two base models were designed and are described here. The first is an isotropic model that emits particles (parents of the observed gases) from the entire nucleus; the second is a jet model that ejects parent particles solely from discrete active areas on the surface of the comet nucleus, resulting in coma jets. The two models are combined to produce the final model, which is compared with observations. The physical processes incorporated in both base models include: (1) isotropic ejection of daughter molecules (the observed gases) in the parent's frame of reference, (2) solar radiation pressure, (3) solar insolation effects, (4) collisions of daughter products with other molecules in the coma, and (5) acceleration of the gas in the coma. The observed daughter molecules are produced when a parent decays, which is represented by either an exponential decay distribution (photodissociation of the parent gas) or a triangular distribution (production from a grain extended source). Application of this model to the analysis the OH, C 2 and CN gas jets observed in the coma of Comet Hale–Bopp is the focus of the accompanying paper [Lederer, S.M., Campins, H., Osip, D.J., 2008. Icarus, in press (this issue)].

We present an analysis of Hapke photometric modeling applied to uniform ground-based UBVRIJHK broadband data of asteroid 25143 Itokawa collected over a wide range of solar phase angles (4°–130°) during the 2004 apparition (Thomas-Osip et al., this issue, hereafter Paper I). Our photometric analyses indicate that Itokawa has a blocky surface with properties different from other, albeit larger, S-class asteroids studied using similar Hapke modeling analyses. Images from the Hayabusa spacecraft affirm the Hapke modeling results, demonstrating the ability of Hapke photometric modeling to predict a rocky asteroid surface correctly; this is the first time that a predicted rocky surface has been observed by a spacecraft. The single particle scattering functions are dominantly forward scattering, suggesting the surface material is composed primarily of clear particles whose scattering is dictated by the particle’s surface as opposed to internal scatterers (more typical of S-class asteroids), while the opposition parameters indicate that the regolith may be more compact than most of the limited number of asteroids visited by spacecraft to date. The roughness properties, single particle scattering properties, and opposition surge characteristics are all indicative of a surface where multiple scattering does not play a major role in defining the photometric properties of the regolith.

In 2004, Asteroid 25143 Itokawa made its final close approach to the Earth prior to its encounter with the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa. This apparition was superb with Itokawa reaching magnitude 12 (two magnitudes brighter than the 2001 apparition and the brightest since its discovery in 1998) and covering a large range of observable solar phase angles. An extensive visible and near-infrared observing campaign of Itokawa was undertaken at Las Campanas and Lowell Observatories to obtain full rotational coverage and cover the largest possible range of solar phase angles (4–129°). Unresolved global color mapping over the complete light curve (best fit synodic period of 12.118 hr) shows no sign of rotational color variability with upper limits of a few percent across the full U-thru-K spectrum. These combined multi-wavelength (UBVRIJHK) rotational light curves allow for the concrete deconvolution of shape from albedo variation in the rotational models and as required for Hapke modeling presented in Paper II (Lederer et al., this issue), permits the removal of the rotational light curve effects from the solar phase curve. Furthermore, these derived solar phase curves can be fit with the IAU H,G magnitude system (Bowell et al., 1989) thus allowing the calculation of geometric albedos (p v = 0.23 ± 0.02) as well as an estimate of the asteroid’s elongated shape (a/b = 1.9 ± 0.1) via the amplitudephase relationtionship (Zappalà et al., 1990). Results derived from the extensive ground-based campaigns are compared and contrasted with the much higher spatial resolution in situ measurements made by the Hayabusa spacecraft. The ‘ground-truth’ provided by the Hayabusa mission results shed light on the inferences that can begin to be made for the general asteroid population.

Stellar occultations, when a Solar System object passes between us and a star and blocks its light, are eagerly awaited by astronomers as they provide a chance to make measurements that are not normally possible. It had been 25 years since a solitary observation of a stellar occultation by Pluto's moon Charon. But on 11 July 2005 another occurred and this time observatories across South America were ideally placed to track it. The resulting haul of data has been used to obtain an accurate measure of Charon's radius, of close to 605 km, and to establish an upper limit (a rather low one) on the density of its atmosphere. Visit tinyurl.com/9c56s for a QuickTime movie of the event. The physical characteristics of Pluto and its moon, Charon, provide insight into the evolution of the outer Solar System. Although previous measurements have constrained the masses of these bodies1,2, their radii and densities have remained uncertain. The observation of a stellar occultation by Charon in 1980 established a lower limit on its radius of 600 km (ref. 3) (later refined to 601.5 km; ref. 4) and suggested a possible atmosphere4. Subsequent, mutual event modelling yielded a range of 600–650 km (ref. 5), corresponding to a density of 1.56 ± 0.22 g cm-3 (refs 2, 5). Here we report multiple-station observations of a stellar occultation by Charon. From these data, we find a mean radius of 606 ± 8 km, a bulk density of 1.72 ± 0.15 g cm-3, and rock-mass fraction 0.63 ± 0.05. We do not detect a significant atmosphere and place 3σ upper limits on atmospheric number densities for candidate gases. These results seem to be consistent with collisional formation for the Pluto–Charon system in which the precursor objects may have been differentiated6, and they leave open the possibility of atmospheric retention by the largest objects in the outer Solar System.

We have measured the separations and position angles of the two components of the binary transneptunian object 1997 CQ29 at eight epochs. From these data we are able to constrain the orbit and mass of this binary system. The best fitting orbit has an orbital period of P = 312+/-3 days. The orbital eccentricity is e = 0.45+/-0.03 and the semimajor axis is a = 8,010+/-80 km. The mass of the system is surprisingly low at 0.42+/-0.02 x 10^18 kg. To account for the observed brightness consistent with the low mass and a range of plausible densities, the geometric albedo must be very high; for an assumed density of 1000 kg m^-3 we find a red geometric albedo of p_R = 0.37, an order of magnitude higher than has been generally assumed for transneptunian objects. If objects with comparably high albedos are common in the Kuiper belt, estimates of the mass of the belt must be significantly reduced. The semimajor axis of 1997 CQ29's orbit is 2.8% of the Hill radius of the primary, a value strikingly similar to this same ratio in other transneptunian binaries, main-belt binaries, and regular satellite systems.

Characterizing the local space density of double degenerate binary systems is a complementary approach to broad sky surveys of double degenerates to determine the expected rates of white dwarf binary mergers, in particular those that may evolve into other observable phenomena such as extreme helium stars, Am CVn systems, and supernovae Ia. However, there have been few such systems detected in local space. We report here the discovery that WD 1242$-$105, a nearby bright WD, is a double-line spectroscopic binary consisting of two degenerate DA white dwarfs of similar mass and temperature, despite it previously having been spectroscopically characterized as a single degenerate. Follow-up photometry, spectroscopy, and trigonometric parallax have been obtained in an effort to determine the fundamental parameters of each component of this system. The binary has a mass ratio of 0.7 and a trigonometric parallax of 25.5 mas, placing it at a distance of 39 pc. The system's total mass is 0.95 M$_\odot$ and has an orbital period of 2.85 hours, making it the strongest known gravitational wave source ($\log h = -20.78$) in the mHz regime. Because of its orbital period and total mass, WD 1242$-$105 is predicted to merge via gravitational radiation on a timescale of 740 Myr, which will most likely not result in a catastrophic explosion., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; to appear in Astronomical Journal

Narrowband filter photometry observations of Comet Hyakutake (1996 B2) were used to investigate this comet's short-term variability as well as its behavior for the apparition as a whole. Utilizing measurements obtained on a total of 13 nights between February 9, 1996, and April 14, 1996, we find that the heliocentric distance ( r H ) dependence of the production rates of OH and NH were much shallower than those for either the carbon-bearing species or the visible dust. Based on the OH measurements, the derived water r H -dependence was also significantly less steep than expected from a basic water vaporization model and required an effective active surface area of about 29 km 2 at r H =1.8 AU, 16 km 2 at r H =1 AU, and only 13 km 2 at r H =0.6 AU. This decrease in active area may be due to seasonally induced variations of a heterogeneous surface, or due to a decreasing contribution of gas from icy grains in the innermost coma. The relative abundances of the minor gas species place Hyakutake into the “typical” category of comets in the A'Hearn et al. (1995, Icarus 118 , 223–270) taxonomic classification system. The spectrum is generally redder at shorter wavelengths throughout the apparition; however, the dust color progressively changes from being significantly reddened (37%/1000 A) at large r H to near-solar at small r H . This change of color with distance implies a significant change in grain sizes or a changing proportion between two or more grain populations. A major outburst was initiated near March 19.9, just prior to the comet's close approach to Earth. The characteristic recovery from the outburst differed among the observed species, with OH recovering most rapidly, essentially returning to its baseline values by March 25. The spatial radial fall-off of OH throughout this interval was consistent with the expected nominal spatial distribution, while CN and C 2 displayed fall-offs consistent with a distributed source, and the dust fall-off was significantly less steep than 1/ρ, possibly due to fragmenting grains. Rotational lightcurve amplitudes were largest for the OH, NH, and dust, again consistent with the carbon-bearing species primarily originating from a distributed source. Significant variations were observed in the lightcurve amplitude and phase shifts as functions of aperture size. Finally, a refined value for the rotation period of 0.2614±0.0003 day was determined.

We present an analysis of the host-galaxy environment of Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a), the discovery of an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source, GW170817. SSS17a occurred 1.9 kpc (in projection; 10.2") from the nucleus of NGC 4993, an S0 galaxy at a distance of 40 Mpc. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pre-trigger image of NGC 4993, Magellan optical spectroscopy of the nucleus of NGC 4993 and the location of SSS17a, and broad-band UV through IR photometry of NGC 4993. The spectrum and broad-band spectral-energy distribution indicate that NGC 4993 has a stellar mass of log (M/M_solar) = 10.49^{+0.08}_{-0.20} and star formation rate of 0.003 M_solar/yr, and the progenitor system of SSS17a likely had an age of >2.8 Gyr. There is no counterpart at the position of SSS17a in the HST pre-trigger image, indicating that the progenitor system had an absolute magnitude M_V > -5.8 mag. We detect dust lanes extending out to almost the position of SSS17a and >100 likely globular clusters associated with NGC 4993. The offset of SSS17a is similar to many short gamma-ray burst offsets, and its progenitor system was likely bound to NGC 4993. The environment of SSS17a is consistent with an old progenitor system such as a binary neutron star system., ApJL in press

Comet Hale-Bopp was observed five times with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) between 4.6 and 2.8 AU. Each time, broadband photometry was performed using 4 different detectors, 5 apertures and 10 filters covering the range between 3.6 and 170 μm. Background observations were performed with identical instrument settings at the same positions on the sky several days after the comet observations. The observation strategy and the data reduction steps are described in some detail, including the techniques to correct for variable detector responsivity. The resulting inband power values of the Hale-Bopp observations and their uncertainties are given. The mean uncertainty is 25%. The final fluxes were computed, taking into account the zodiacal background, possible offset of the comet's position from the center of the aperture, the brightness distribution within the coma, and the spectral energy distribution of the comet's emission. Strong thermal emission from a broad size distribution of dust particles was detected in all of the data sets, even at r = 4.6-4.9 AU pre-perihelion and 3.9 AU post-perihelion; the total thermal energy varied as r-3. The 7.3-12.8 μm color temperature was ~1.5 times the blackbody temperature, higher than that observed in any other comet. Silicate features at 10 and 25 μm were prominent in all 5 data sets, the largest heliocentric distances that silicate emission has been detected in a comet. The presence of crystalline water ice grains is suggested from the 60 μm excess emission at 4.6-4.9 AU, consistent with the observed QOH if the icy grains were slightly warmer than an equilibrium blackbody. The average albedo of the dust is higher than that of comet P/Halley, but lower than other albedo measurements for Hale-Bopp nearer perihelion. There is no evidence for a component of cold, bright icy grains enhancing the scattered light at 4.6 AU. Simple models for a mixture of silicate and absorbing grains were fit to the ISO spectra and photometry at 2.8 AU. The observed flux at λ >100 μm requires a size distribution in which most of the mass is concentrated in large particles. Dust production rates of order 1.5 x 105 kg s-1 at 2.8 AU and 3 x 104 kg s-1 at 4.6 AU have been found. They correspond to dust to gas mass ratios of 6 to 10.

Time series CCD photometry of the inner coma of active comets has been used over the last twenty years to determine the rotation period of their nucleus. Usually, the photometry is performed by using very small apertures with the aim of isolating as much as possible the brightness contribution of the nucleus with respect to the brightness of the coma or of measuring short-term gas/dust production rate diurnal variations. The effect of seeing variations in the brightness profile of the comet and their consequences on the measured magnitude in such small apertures has never been studied before. The aim of this paper is to study this "seeing effect." A series of simulated images of two comets is generated by using different seeing values. The brightness of the simulated comets is measured by using very small apertures ranging from 2 to 16 pixels. A strong correlation between the measured magnitudes and the seeing is found. This systematic effect can produce false variations of several tenths of magnitudes in the light curve in nights with variable seeing conditions. A new method to correct this seeing effect on real observations is proposed and applied to CCD observations of comets 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 and 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, carried out with the 82 cm IAC-80 Telescope at Teide Observatory (Canary Islands, Spain). The seeing effect is clearly present in the observations, and the method is shown to be very efficient in correcting it.

Narrowband photometry of Comet Hyakutake (1996 B2) revealed periodic variability in the production of dust and gas during the comet's close approach to Earth in March 1996. The photometry alone was insufficient to unambiguously discriminate among several possible periods, but a unique period determination was possible by utilizing repeating morphological features in CCD images obtained simultaneously with the photometry on the nights of March 23–25. In particular, a large puff or blob of material was seen to be released in the sunward direction every 6.23 ± 0.03 h. This periodic release of material, presumably from a single dominant active region on the surface, was the source of the observed lightcurve variations. A second, much smaller morphological feature also repeats each cycle, confirming the value of 6.23 h for Hyakutake's synodic rotational period.

1996 JA 1 , which approached to 0.003 AU of the Earth on 1996 May 19.7 UT, was discovered on films exposed 5 days earlier during the course of the high-ecliptic-latitude Bigelow Sky Survey. The utility of high-latitude surveying for near-Earth objects is demonstrated by the fact that 1996 JA 1 traveled through the usual ecliptic survey region at a rate of 5° hr −1 , and would likely have escaped detection even at V = 11. Rapid astrometry and communication through the Minor Planet Center and the World Wide Web facilitated follow-up observations that indicate 1996 JA 1 has a mean diameter of 170 m, a rotational period of 5.23 hr, and an albedo of 0.30. With a spectrum consistent with the V class, it is possible that 1996 JA 1 shares the same source as the HED meteorites.

Comet Hale-Bopp has been observed five times with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), four times before its perihelion passage at heliocentric distances of 4.92, 4.58, 2.93 and 2.81 AU, and at 3.91 AU postperihelion. Each time, multi-filter photometry covering the range between 3.6–175 μm with eight to ten filters was performed to sample the spectral energy distribution of the comet. These measurements were used to determine dust temperatures for the cometary coma. The evolution of the strength of the silicate feature can be followed in the data as well as the flux deficit at longer wavelengths.

We present a comparison between images of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) obtained from 12 March to 9 May 1997, with two telescopes of the Observatorio del Teide (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) in visible (Johnson-V filter) and three near-infrared narrowband filters (Brγ (2.166 μm), CO (2.295 μm), and Kcon (2.260 μm)). No significant differences are observed between the images in the three near-infrared bands suggesting that any CO emission is very weak, or produced by an extended flat source. We do not find evidence for the existence of an additional infrared component due to emission by warm dust, or to dust grains of diverse composition and/or size. Visible and infrared images of the same rotational phase look almost identical, supporting the view that the observed jets and shells are mainly dust structures.

We report the identification of gas jets in comet Hale-Bopp in OH, NH, CN, C2 and C3. This is the first time OH and NH jets without an obvious optical dust jet counterpart have been identified in narrowband comet images. We also confirm the existence of CN jets as reported by Larson et al. (1997) and Mueller et al. (1998). Jet features can be seen in the March and April 1997 datasets, approximately a month before and after perihelion. Our results contribute to the understanding of both the chemical properties of the comet as well as the physical mechanisms necessary to produce these features.

The Japanese Space Agency's Hayabusa II mission is scheduled to rendezvous with and return a sample from the near-Earth asteroid (162173) 1999 JU3. Previous visible-wavelength spectra of this object show significant variability across multiple epochs which could be the result of a compositionally heterogeneous surface. We present new visible and near-infrared spectra to demonstrate that thermally altered carbonaceous chondrites are plausible compositional analogs, however this is a tentative association due to a lack of any prominent absorption features in our data. We have also conducted a series of high signal-to-noise visible-wavelength observations to investigate the reported surface heterogeneity. Our time series of visible spectra do not show evidence for variability at a precision level of a few percent. This result suggests two most likely possibilities. One, that the surface of 1999 JU3 is homogenous and that unaccounted for systematic effects are causing spectral variation across epochs. Or two, that the surface of 1999 JU3 is regionally heterogenous, in which case existing shape models suggest that any heterogeneity must be limited to terrains smaller than approximately 5% of the total surface area. These new observations represent the last opportunity before both the launch and return of the Hayabusa II spacecraft to perform ground-based characterization of this asteroid. We present the results of narrowband photometry of 85 comets observed over a period of 17 years. The data have been reduced homogeneously to molecular production rates and a proxy for the dust production rate. We confirm previous investigations, both our own and those of others, showing that there is no differentiation with depth in the cometary nucleus, that most comets are very similar to each other in chemical composition, and that the dust-to-gas ratio does not vary with the dynamical age of the comet. There is little variation of relative abundances with heliocentric distance, implying that for the species we observe the role of density-dependent processes in the coma is small. There is also little variation from one apparition to the next for most short-period comets. We show, however, that there are significant compositional groupings of comets, apparently related to place of formation. Specifically, the majority of comets originating in the Kuiper belt appear to be significantly depleted in the carbon-chain molecules that lead to the observed C2 and C3. Kuiper belt comets also exhibit smaller active areas, steeper slopes, and greater asymmetries about perihelion than do other comets, implying smaller active fractions. We argue that at least the compositional effect is primordial rather than evolutionary. We also show a significant but unexplained correlation of some properties, notably the dust-to-gas ratio, with perihelion distance. We provide strong evidence that most CN, some C2, and virtually no NH are produced from grains in the coma rather than from nuclear ices. Evidence suggests that the mixing between water and other ices occurs at the level of grains rather than at the molecular level. We also show that there must be a large population of comets having very low activity. The data appear to require mixing of cometesimals with different compositions into individual nuclei, with some nuclei containing nearly the full range of compositions seen in the ensemble while others contain a much smaller range of compositions.

We present simultaneous near-infrared and thermal-infrared observations of 4015 1979 VA, also known as comet P/Wilson-Harrington, which permit an estimate of its albedo and radius. If the standard thermal model (STM, highest nuclear temperature) is assumed, a radius of 1.30±0.16 km and a geometric albedo in the J bandpass of 0.10±0.02 are obtained. Although our observations of P/WH do not rule out the applicability of the STM, we believe the isothermal latitude model (ILM, lowest temperature) better describes the thermal properties of this object because of its size and rotation period. The ILM case yields a radius of 1.95±0.25 km and an albedo in the J bandpass of 0.05±0.01. We compare the nuclear characteristics of comet P/Wilson-Harrington with those of four other periodic comets observed in sufficient detail.

CCD photometry performed on the comet-asteroid transition object 4015 Wilson-Harrington during its most recent apparition has provided a new rotational lightcurve with a standard double-peaked rotational period of 6.1 +/- 0.05 hr and an amplitude of 0.2 magnitudes. The size, rotation period, and lightcurve amplitude of this object are all similar to values found for near-Earth asteroids (NEA) and small main-belt asteroids. However, these values vary significantly from those of any previously well-studied cometary nuclei. In short, the range in cometary nuclear properties is greater than that indicated by the comets studied previously and although the statistics are still poor, the size and rotational properties of 4015 Wilson-Harrington do suggest that some fraction of NEAs are of cometary origin.
