Marine traffic is an important noise contributor to the underwater soundscape. In addition to the growing marine traffic worldwide, the increase in both ship size and ship power tends to intensify the radiated noise, and thus the low-frequency noise level. Studies have shown that marine species can be impacted by the rapid growth of ambient noise levels. In particular, masking of communication or behavior changes in relation to noise exposure have been documented.Shipping noise and its consequences on marine fauna are now monitored, and their evolution is of major concern for marine policies. Shipping noise modeling, based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data is the most common approach to providing underwater noise levels at basin scales. Indeed, most ships are equipped with AIS transmitters, sending information concerning both the ship (ID, activity, length, etc.) and its navigation (position, speed, heading, etc.). This information is used to compute traffic density maps, and to model the ship’s radiated noise. The ambient noise is finally inferred by propagating noise sources in the environment.In France, a first Covid-19 lockdown occurred from the 17th of March to the 11th of May 2020, reducing significantly the marine traffic. In particular, cruise ships, passenger vessels, vehicle carriers and containerships harbor callings have decreased by 27%, 13%, 7% and 2 % respectively in member states harbors from 2019 to 2020, according to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). This traffic decrease affected only specific categories of ships, and contributed to some extent to a decrease of the anthropogenic underwater noise.This study aims to analyze the impact of the traffic density reduction due to the lockdown on the shipping noise in the occidental part of the Mediterranean Sea by use of AIS datasets from 2019 and 2020, and eventually to discuss the potential benefit of traffic density reduction as a mitigation measure.

Ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) commonly record short duration events (SDEs), that could be described by all of these characteristics: (i) duration < 1 s, (ii) one single‐wave train with no identified P‐ nor S‐wave arrivals and (iii) a dominant frequency usually between 4 Hz and 30 Hz. In many areas, SDEs have been associated with gas or fluid‐related processes near cold seeps or hydrothermal vents, although fish bumps, instrumental or current‐generated noise have been proposed as possible sources. In order to address some remaining issues, this study presents results from in situ and laboratory experiments combined with observations from 2 contrasting areas, the Sea of Marmara (Turkey) and the Chilean subduction zone. The in situ experiment was conducted at the EMSO‐Molène submarine observatory (near Brest, France) and consisted in continuously monitoring two OBSs with a camera. The images revealed that no fish regularly bumped into the instruments. Laboratory experiments aimed at reproducing SDEs’ waveforms by injecting air or water in a tank filled by sand and sea‐water and monitored with an OBS. Injecting air in the sediments produced waveforms very similar to the observed SDEs, while injecting air in the water column did not, constraining the source of SDEs in the seafloor sediments. Finally, the systematic analysis of two real data sets revealed that it is possible to discriminate gas‐related SDEs from biological or sea‐state related noise from simple source parameters, such as the temporal mode of occurrence, the back azimuth and the dominant frequency. Key Points Short duration high amplitude events routinely recorded on marine seismometers are not created by fish bumping into the geophone. In laboratory experiments, the waveforms of these events are well reproduced by fluid migration in the sediments. We propose 3 simple source parameters to discriminate gas‐related short duration events in ocean bottom seismometer data.

Maps of underwater noise generated by shipping activity became a useful tool to support international regulations on marine environments. They are used to infer the risk of impact on biodiversity. Maps are performed by 1) computing the emitted noise levels from ships, 2) propagating the acoustic signal in the environment and 3) using localized measurements to validate the results. Because of mismatches in environmental data and a limited number of measurements, noise maps remain highly uncertain.In this work, the uncertainty of the noise maps is investigated through the potential complexity of soundscape. The acoustic signal at each receiving cell is computed from the convolution of the source of the ships by the transmission losses of the environment. Complexity is mapped by computing Shannon's entropy of the transmission losses for each receiver. High entropy areas only reflect high shipping densities and favorable acoustic propagation properties of the local environment. Low entropy areas reflect: low shipping density and/or poor acoustic propagation properties. An area with high shipping densities and poor acoustic propagation properties will still have low entropy values.Entropy maps allow classifying areas depending on their environmental features. Thus, scenarios of uncertainty are defined. Results highlight the necessity to consider the diversity of the environmental properties in support of the production of noise maps. The methodology could help in optimizing spatial and temporal resolution of map computations, as well as optimizing acoustic monitoring strategies.

The European Union aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Therefore, it is crucial to increase the use of renewable energy. One clean energy source is the wind, and during the last decades, several countries have developed wind farms, not only on land but also in the ocean. Most offshore wind farms have been installed in shallow waters; however, recently, open ocean offshore floating wind farms are being installed in deep waters due to stronger and steadier wind occurring in these areas. Thus, offshore wind turbines are a potential new source of underwater noise. Noise can propagate underwater having the potential to affect marine mammals and fish, among others. Floating wind turbines are known to reduce the installation and decommissioning noise in contrast to fixed-bottom turbines but, nevertheless, the noise produced by the operation of the turbines and the anchoring systems have been scarcely studied, and it is still unknown whether added noise could significantly affect behavior or even hearing capacity in the long term. In the framework of the JONAS European project we anticipate a regional use case with a future installation of a commercial offshore wind farm, to determine how noise would propagate in the region, from installation to operation, and potentially impact (or not) local fauna, focusing initially on mammal groups. In this study, we use the RAM model (Range-dependent acoustic model) which is a parabolic equation (PE) code that calculates the propagation of sound in the ocean using the split-step Padé solution. RAM needs information about the temperature and salinity in the water column to calculate sound speed profiles, as well as the bathymetry and a geo-acoustic model of the bottom. It returns the transmission loss depending on the depth and distance to the source. We have applied the RAM model to an area located in the southeast of Gran Canaria Island, where a plan for a floating wind farm is under consideration. Results and suggestions about the negative impact on marine mammals known to live in this location are presented.

The Calabrian subduction zone is one of the narrowest arcs on Earth and a key area to understand the geodynamic evolution of the Mediterranean and other marginal seas. Here in the Ionian Sea, the African plate subducts beneath Eurasia. Imaging the boundary between the downgoing slab and the upper plate along the Calabrian subduction zone is important for assessing the potential of the subduction zone to generate mega‐thrust earthquakes and was the main objective of this study. Here we present and analyze the results from a 380 km long, wide‐angle seismic profile spanning the complete subduction zone, from the deep Ionian Basin and the accretionary wedge to NE Sicily, with additional constraints offered by 3‐D Gravity modeling and the analysis of earthquake hypocenters. The velocity model for the wide‐angle seismic profile images thin oceanic crust throughout the basin. The Calabrian backstop extends underneath the accretionary wedge to about 100 km SE of the coast. The seismic model was extended in depth using earthquake hypocenters. The combined results indicate that the slab dip increases abruptly from 2‐3° to 60‐70° over a distance of ≤50 km underneath the Calabrian backstop. This abrupt steepening is likely related to the roll‐back geodynamic evolution of the narrow Calabrian slab which shows great similarity to the shallow and deep geometry of the Gibraltar slab. Plain language abstract We investigate the deep crustal structure of southern Italy and the Central Mediterranean where some of the oldest oceanic crust on Earth is actively descending (subducting) into the earth's interior (Speranza et al., 2012). This process causes much of the moderate seismicity observed in this region and may be responsible for strong historical earthquakes as well (Gutscher et al., 2006). Deep seismic data recorded during a marine geophysical expedition performed in 2014, allow us to reconstruct the 3‐D geometry of this subduction zone. Our data reveal a 1‐4 km thick evaporitic (salt bearing) layer in the 13 km thick accretionary wedge. The thin underlying crust has characteristics of oceanic crust. The adjacent onshore domains (E Sicily and SW Calabria) are composed of 25‐30 km thick crust with velocities typical of continental crust. Together with earthquake travel‐time tomography (providing images of the subducting slab down to 300 km) and gravity modeling we can for the first time image the abrupt steepening of the subducting slab, the “slab hinge”, where slab dip increases from ≤5° to >60° over a downdip distance of 50 km. This slab dip is steep compared to other subduction zones, for example in Northern Honshu Japan or Sumatra, where the slab dip remains roughly 10° down to 40 km depth and therefore may have consequences on the seismicity of the region.

The nature of the Ionian Sea crust has been the subject of scientific debate for more than 30 years, mainly because seismic imaging of the deep crust and upper mantle of the Ionian Abyssal Plain (IAP) has not been conclusive to date. The IAP is sandwiched between the Calabrian and Hellenic subduction zones in the central Mediterranean. A NNE–SSW-oriented 131 km long seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection profile, consisting of eight ocean bottom seismometers and hydrophones, was acquired in 2014. The profile was designed to univocally confirm the proposed oceanic nature of the IAP crust as a remnant of the Tethys and to confute its interpretation as a strongly thinned part of the African continental crust. A P-wave velocity model developed from travel-time forward modelling is refined by gravimetric data and synthetic modelling of the seismic data. A roughly 6–7 km thick crust with velocities ranging from 5.1 to 7.2 km s−1, top to bottom, can be traced throughout the IAP. In the vicinity of the Medina seamounts at the southern IAP boundary, the crust thickens to about 9 km and seismic velocities decrease to 6.8 km s−1 at the crust–mantle boundary. The seismic velocity distribution and depth of the crust–mantle boundary in the IAP document its oceanic nature and support the interpretation of the IAP as a remnant of the Tethys lithosphere with the Malta Escarpment as a transform margin and a Tethys opening in the NNW–SSE direction.

International audience; The Calabrian accretionary wedge in the Ionian Sea is the site of slow deformation related to the overall convergence between Africa and Eurasia and the subduction zone beneath Calabria. High-resolution swath bathymetric data and seismic profiling image a complex network of strike-slip faults offshore Sicily. Ongoing normal faulting occurs in the straits of Messina area (1908 M7.2 earthquake). We applied analog modeling using granular materials in a compression box to test the predictions of certain geodynamic models regarding the location and kinematics of a major lateral slab edge tear fault. One experiment, using two independently moving backstops, showed that the relative kinematics of two blocks can produce a zone of dextral transtension and surface collapse in the model wedge. This experiment also produced a dextral offset in the deformation front. However, this offset is not observed in the morpho-bathymetry of the Calabrian accretionary wedge. In fact, counterclockwise material flow is observed along an internal boundary between the two corresponding lobes of the Calabrian wedge. The second experiment features an inner frictional (sand) wedge and an external viscoelastic wedge (sand and silicone) to attempt to model the interaction between the internal clastic portion and the external evaporitic portion of the Calabrian accretionary wedge. We interpret a major dextral offset in the limit between the external (evaporitic) wedge and the internal (clastic) wedge in the natural example, as well as other large-scale structural elements (elongated basin and a network of slip lines) as indicating the current primary kinematic boundary passes along the Alfeo Fault System and that the entire accretionary wedge remains tectonically active.

International audience; In the Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean) the slow convergence between Africa and Eurasia results in the formation of a narrow subduction zone. The nature of the crust of the subducting plate remains debated and could represent the last remnants of the Neo-Tethys ocean. The origin of the Ionian basin is also under discussion, especially concerning the rifting mechanisms as the Malta Escarpment could represent a remnant of this opening. This subduction retreats toward the southeast (motion occurring since the last 35 Ma) but is confined to the narrow Ionian basin. A major lateral slab tear fault is required to accommodate the slab roll-back. This fault is thought to propagate along the eastern Sicily margin but its precise location remains controversial. This study focuses on the deep crustal structure of the eastern Sicily margin and the Malta Escarpment. We present two two-dimensional P wave velocity models obtained from forward modeling of wide-angle seismic data acquired onboard the R/V Meteor during the DIONYSUS cruise in 2014. The results image an oceanic crust within the Ionian basin as well as the deep structure of the Malta Escarpment, which presents characteristics of a transform margin. A deep and asymmetrical sedimentary basin is imaged south of the Messina strait and seems to have opened between the Calabrian and Peloritan continental terranes. The interpretation of the velocity models suggests that the tear fault is located east of the Malta Escarpment, along the Alfeo fault system.
