Abstract

This paper considers the learning difficulties in the specific context of the elementary school - final years (6th to 9th grade), especially in public schools. These difficulties result from the new social and didactic organization, the relationship with expert teachers, and new homework's demanded, typical of this period when compared to early years. To mediate these difficulties, we propose the Writing to Learn device whose purpose is to systematically explore the epistemic function of writing. Abstract

Mineral springs in Massif Central, France can be characterized by higher levels of natural radioactivity in comparison to the background. The biota in these waters is constantly under radiation exposure mainly from the α-emitters of the natural decay chains, with 226Ra in sediments ranging from 21 Bq/g to 43 Bq/g and 222Rn activity concentrations in water up to 4600 Bq/L. This study couples for the first time micro- and nanodosimetric approaches to radioecology by combining GATE and Geant4-DNA to assess the dose rates and DNA damages to microorganisms living in these naturally radioactive ecosystems. It focuses on unicellular eukaryotic microalgae (diatoms) which display an exceptional abundance of teratological forms in the most radioactive mineral springs in Auvergne. Using spherical geometries for the microorganisms and based on γ-spectrometric analyses, we evaluate the impact of the external exposure to 1000 Bq/L 222Rn dissolved in the water and 30 Bq/g 226Ra in the sediments. Our results show that the external dose rates for diatoms are significant (9.7 μGy/h) and comparable to the threshold (10 μGy/h) for the protection of the ecosystems suggested by the literature. In a first attempt of simulating the radiation induced DNA damage on this species, the rate of DNA Double Strand Breaks per day is estimated to 1.11E-04. Our study confirms the significant mutational pressure from natural radioactivity to which microbial biodiversity has been exposed since Earth origin in hydrothermal springs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Although many studies have explored the responses of living organisms or ecosystems exposed to radioelements from human activities, very few studies have focused on the characterization of microbial biodiversity and the adaptations developed in environments characterized by natural, chronic and old radioactivity. Radioactive mineral springs are insulated ecosystems that have barely evolved in the last centuries. They therefore offer exceptional windows on the history of life on earth. Within the framework of the TIRAMISU project (biodiversiTy In RAdioactive MIneral Springs of the aUvergne region), biologists, ecologists, geologists, physicists, radiochemists and sociologists explore if and how natural ionizing radiation can be an "abiotic driver" impacting the diversity and structuring of microbial communities in food webs exposed to this radiation for long periods.

23. Formulation de fluxants pour bitumes à base d’esters méthyliques d’huiles végétales

Abstract

Les fluxants pétroliers servent à améliorer la viscosité du bitume lors de son répandage, et par voie de conséquence le mouillage des granulats. Leur évaporation entraîne la montée en cohésion du revêtement. Malheureusement, ces produits d’origine fossile, outre les problèmes qu’ils posent en termes de COV, ne sont pas sans effet sur les conditions de travail des personnels de chantier et l’environnement (air, eau). De plus leur utilisation s’effectue à 160 °C -- au-dessus du point éclair -- et n’est pas sans présenter un risque d’explosion (les sites industriels de fabrication et de stockage de ces produits nécessitent une autorisation de type installations classées). Le recours à des esters méthyliques d’huiles végétales (EMVH), comme fluidifiant permet de remédier à ces inconvénients, mais, sans optimisation (ajout d’additifs), la montée en consistance du liant s’effectue plus lentement selon la réaction de siccativation liée à la présence de doubles liaisons sur les chaînes grasses des esters. L’influence des caractéristiques chimiques des esters (composition en acides gras, teneur en tocophérols notamment) et de l’ajout, en quantité catalytique, d’huiles végétales siccatives sur la siccativité finale des liants EMVH, ont été étudiés. Différents esters méthyliques ont été testés (esters méthyliques de colza, de tournesol et de lin). Les analyses réalisées avant et après traitement thermique (1 h à 160 °C pour tenir compte des conditions réelles d’utilisation) font apparaître des corrélations entre, teneur en tocophérols, richesse en doubles liaisons conjuguées et performances au séchage. Une modification de la formule sur base esters a été optimisée par incorporation d’huiles végétales siccatives. Il s’avère que ces huiles jouent le rôle d’activateur ou d’inhibiteur de séchage, selon la nature de l’ester méthylique employé. Des formulations, en présence de bitume, ont été testées au laboratoire d’application industrielle de la société APPIA afin de déterminer l’influence de la nature du bitume (composés asphalténiques, paraffiniques, résines) sur le séchage final. Ces tests industriels n’ont pas permis de différencier les comportements des liants EMHV observés en l’absence de bitume. Ainsi l’emploi d’huiles végétales siccatives n’affecte pas significativement la remontée de consistance du liant \; les résultats obtenus (évolution de la température de ramollissement, TBA, au cours du temps) sont quasi identiques à ceux obtenus sur la formule de référence (bitume fluxé en présence de liant pétrochimique). Il semble que la siccativation du bitume soit telle, en présence d’agents siccatifs, que ce phénomène ne nous permette pas d’observer les tendances mises en évidence avec les seuls liants EMHV. Des chantiers réalisés en 2001et 2002 en Haute-Savoie, sur des voies à trafic important, ont montré que la remontée en consistance des formulations proposées pouvait convenir. Les liants EMHV pourront donc couvrir la quasi-totalité des applications. Au total, depuis 1999, plus de 15 000 tonnes de liants anhydres de répandages ont été fabriqués et utilisés avec des résultats similaires à ceux des liants classiques. Ces travaux ont été menés dans le cadre d’un programme Agrice11.1 2 AGRIculture pour la Chimie et l’Energie 1 en partenariat avec Diester Industrie et la société Appia.

Abstract

Fruits have been traditionally classified into two categories based on their capacity to produce and respond to ethylene during ripening. Fruits whose ripening is associated to a peak of ethylene production and a respiration burst are referred to as climacteric, while those that are not are referred to as non-climacteric. However, an increasing body of literature supports an important role for ethylene in the ripening of both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits. Genome and transcriptomic data have become available across a variety of fruits and we leverage these data to compare the structure and transcriptional regulation of the ethylene receptors and related proteins. Through the analysis of four economically important fruits, two climacteric (tomato and apple), and two non-climacteric (grape and citrus), this review compares the structure and transcriptional regulation of the ethylene receptors and related proteins in both types of fruit, establishing a basis for the annotation of ethylene-related genes. This analysis reveals two interesting differences between climacteric and non-climacteric fruit: i) a higher number of ETR genes are found in climacteric fruits, and ii) non-climacteric fruits are characterized by an earlier ETR expression peak relative to sugar accumulation

Abstract

Ladinian (Middle Triassic) strata of the Balaton Highland (west central Hungary) comprise interbedded marine carbonate and volcaniclastic rocks. The sediments are noted for their rich ammonoid faunas, which allow detailed biostratigraphic subdivision and correlation. For the first time, isotopic dating of the tuff layers was carried out to calibrate the age of ammonoid zones and subzones. Four successive horizons were dated from the Felsoors section, a candidate stratotype for the base of the Ladinian stage. Within the Reitzi Zone, which is interpreted here as the basal Ladinian unit, the following biostratigraphically tightly constrained U-Pb zircon ages were obtained: Felsoeoersensis Subzone 241.1 [+ or -] 0.5 Ma; Liepoldti Subzone 241.2 [+ or -] 0.4 Ma; Reitzi Subzone 240.5 [+ or -] 0.5 and 240.4 [+ or -] 0.4 Ma. A redeposited tuff from the Gredleri Zone at Liter yielded an additional U-Pb age of 238.7 [+ or -] 0.6 Ma. The new isotopic ages are in agreement with published U-Pb dates from the Southern Alps. Together, they allow estimation of the start of the Ladinian at 241.5 Ma and of the end of the stage at 237 Ma. Abstract

Nosso propósito, neste trabalho, é apresentar uma proposta para uma pedagogia do argumento. Entendemos por pedagogia o conhecimento elaborado, capaz de compreender um fenômeno, os sujeitos e as ações, considerando o uso da linguagem. Partimos da constatação de que, apesar da preocupação com o tema e da grande quantidade de trabalhos desenvolvidos que desencadeiam propostas de ensino, percebemos que não se tem pensado a respeito de uma concepção de argumentação específica para o contexto de sala de aula e a argumentação está intimamente relacionada apenas à produção textual. Propomos, assim, uma perspectiva mais ampla centrada na construção do argumento. Entendemos que, quando alguém é posto diante de um acontecimento no mundo, a resposta é um argumento cujo processo de construção pode ser abordado em sala de aula, de forma autônoma, enquanto uma habilidade de uso da linguagem. A proposta é composta em três seções. A primeira consiste na apresentação dos princípios da pedagogia do argumento, centrados em duas orientações: o foco no argumento e o propósito de abordá-lo em sala de aula. A segunda seção refere-se à revisão de algumas perspectivas teóricas do campo dos estudos da argumentação tendo em vista o que elas oferecem em termos de suporte para a construção do argumento, e, dessa forma, podem subsidiar a proposta de pedagogia do argumento. Por fim, a terceira seção apresenta um modelo de aplicação que comporta o trabalho com a construção do argumento em três etapas: contextualização, planejamento e textualização. A ideia é a de que, por meio da construção do argumento, seja estimulado o pensamento do sujeito sobre o mundo, para ajudá-lo a aprender a compreender o julgamento de suas próprias ideias, bem como da dos outros, para testá-los de forma suficiente no que concerne ao rebate de ideias opostas, respeitando o resultado desta combinação. Essa pedagogia do argumento pode servir de referência para professores durante o planejamento de aulas para diferentes níveis de escolaridade. Our purpose in this paper is to present a proposal for an argument pedagogy. We understand by pedagogy the elaborated knowledge, capable of understanding a phenomenon, subjects and actions, considering the use of language. We start from the observation that, despite the concern with the theme and the great amount of work developed that initiate teaching proposals, we realize that we have not thought about a conception of specific argumentation for the context of the classroom and the argumentation is closely related only to textual production. We propose, therefore, a broader perspective centered on the construction of the argument. We understand that, when someone is confronted with an event in the world, the answer is an argument whose construction process can be approached in the classroom, autonomously, as a skill of language use. The proposal is composed of three sections. The first is the presentation of the principles of pedagogy of argument, centered on two orientations: the focus on the argument and the purpose of approaching it in the classroom. The second section refers to the revision of some theoretical perspectives of the field of argumentation studies in view of what they offer in terms of support for the construction of the argument, and, in this way, can subsidize the proposal of pedagogy of the argument. Finally, the third section presents a methodological model that involves working with the construction of the argument in three stages: contextualization, planning and textualization. The idea is that by constructing the argument the subject's thinking about the world be stimulated to help him learn to understand the judgment of his own ideas as well as that of others in order to test them with regard to the rebuttal of opposing ideas, respecting the result of this combination. This pedagogy of argument can serve as a reference for teachers during the planning of classes for different levels of schooling.

Abstract

Abstract Background Auxin is an important phytohormone for fleshy fruit development, having been shown to be involved in the initial signal for fertilisation, fruit size through the control of cell division and cell expansion, and ripening related events. There is considerable knowledge of auxin-related genes, mostly from work in model species. With the apple genome now available, it is possible to carry out genomics studies on auxin-related genes to identify genes that may play roles in specific stages of apple fruit development. Results High amounts of auxin in the seed compared with the fruit cortex were observed in 'Royal Gala' apples, with amounts increasing through fruit development. Injection of exogenous auxin into developing apples at the start of cell expansion caused an increase in cell size. An expression analysis screen of auxin-related genes involved in auxin reception, homeostasis, and transcriptional regulation showed complex patterns of expression in each class of gene. Two mapping populations were phenotyped for fruit size over multiple seasons, and multiple quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were observed. One QTL mapped to a region containing an Auxin Response Factor (ARF106). This gene is expressed during cell division and cell expansion stages, consistent with a potential role in the control of fruit size. Conclusions The application of exogenous auxin to apples increased cell expansion, suggesting that endogenous auxin concentrations are at least one of the limiting factors controlling fruit size. The expression analysis of ARF106 linked to a strong QTL for fruit weight suggests that the auxin signal regulating fruit size could partially be modulated through the function of this gene. One class of gene (GH3) removes free auxin by conjugation to amino acids. The lower expression of these GH3 genes during rapid fruit expansion is consistent with the apple maximising auxin concentrations at this point.

Abstract

International audience; Fruits have been traditionally classified into two categories based on their capacity to produce and respond to ethylene during ripening. Fruits whose ripening is associated to a peak of ethylene production and a respiration burst are referred to as climacteric, while those that are not are referred to as non-climacteric. However, an increasing body of literature supports an important role for ethylene in the ripening of both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits. Genome and transcriptomic data have become available across a variety of fruits and we leverage these data to compare the structure and transcriptional regulation of the ethylene receptors and related proteins. Through the analysis of four economically important fruits, two climacteric (tomato and apple), and two non-climacteric (grape and citrus), this review compares the structure and transcriptional regulation of the ethylene receptors and related proteins in both types of fruit, establishing a basis for the annotation of ethylene-related genes. This analysis reveals two interesting differences between climacteric and non-climacteric fruit: i) a higher number of ETR genes are found in climacteric fruits, and ii) non-climacteric fruits are characterized by an earlier ETR expression peak relative to sugar accumulation.
