Abstract

Artificial intelligence paradigms hold significant potential to advance nanophotonics. This study presents a novel approach to designing a plasmonic absorber using an artificial neural network as a surrogate model in conjunction with a genetic algorithm. The methodology involved numerical simulations of multilayered metal–dielectric plasmonic structures to establish a dataset for training an artificial neural network (ANN). The results demonstrate the proficiency of the trained ANN in predicting reflectance spectra and its ability to generalize intricate relationships between desired performance and geometric configurations, with values of correlation higher than 98% in comparison with ground-truth electromagnetic simulations. Furthermore, the ANN was employed as a surrogate model in a genetic algorithm (GA) loop to achieve target optical behaviors. The proposed methodology provides a powerful means of inverse designing multilayered metal–dielectric devices tailored for visible band wavelength filtering. This research demonstrates that the integration of AI-driven approaches in nanophotonics leads to efficient and effective design strategies.

Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. 10. Characterization of Pictorial Materials of Two 18th Century Sculptures: King David and Bathsheba

Abstract

In this {work}, the X-ray fluorescence technique was employed to characterize the pictorial materials used in two sculptures from the 18th. In addition, Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize the preparation layers used in the sculptures. {The analyzed sculptures} are carved in wood, with gilding and polychrome, and represent the biblical characters, Bathsheba, and King David. The sculptures are property of the Church of \textit{Nossa Senhora do Pilar}, in Duque de Caxias, RJ. XRF {analyzes} were performed using a portable ED-XRF system, which has a low-power X-ray tube (Amptek) with a silver target (Ag) and an SDD detector (Amptek). Raman spectroscopy {analyzes} were performed using the DXR2 Raman microscopy equipment (Thermo Fisher Scientific) with a 785 nm laser source. The results obtained from the XRF and Raman spectroscopy techniques suggest the presence of Gypsum, Calcite, Calcium Sulfate. In addition, the results obtained suggest the presence of the following pigments in the sculptures: Lead white, Titanium White, Lithopone, Ochre, Vermilion, Red Lead and gilding with gold leaf. The studies also showed that the Bathsheba sculpture was probably subjected to some processes of chromatic reintegration over the years due to the heterogeneity of pigments found in the same region

Abstract

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5{\deg} to 22{\deg} and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. Abstract

A Berlinda de Aparato do Imperador D. Pedro II é um objeto museológico muito importante para a história do Brasil. Trata-se do veículo imperial mais imponente de todo o período monárquico brasileiro, relacionado não apenas com a imagem do imperador D. Pedro II, mas com todo o Segundo Reinado. A berlinda foi encomendada para a cerimônia de coroação de D. Pedro II, em 1841 e pertence ao acervo do Museu Imperial, localizado na cidade de Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Neste trabalho foi analisado a técnica de douramento utilizada nas pinturas decorativas da berlinda. Para a análise do douramento foram aplicadas técnicas de Fluorescência de Raios X (XRF) e Macro Fluorescência de Raios X (MA-XRF). Todas as análises foram realizadas “in situ” utilizando equipamentos portáteis. As medidas de XRF realizadas sobre as folhas de ouro revelaram a presença do elemento-chave cromo. Abstract

Among scintillators, the PWO is one of the most widely used, for instance in CMS calorimeter at CERN and PANDA project. Crystallographic structure and chemical composition as well as residual stress condition, are indicators of homogeneity and good quality of the crystal. In this paper, structural characterization of a defective PbWO4 (PWO) crystal has been performed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Photoelasticity in the unusual a-c crystallographic plane. XRD and EDS analysis have been used to investigate crystallographic orientation and chemical composition, while stress distribution, which indicates macroscopic inhomogeneities and defects, has been obtained by photoelastic approaches, in Conoscopic and Sphenoscopic configuration. Since the sample is cut along the a-c crystallographic plane, a new method is proposed for the interpretation of the fringe pattern. The structural analysis has detected odds from the nominal lattice dimension, which can be attributed to the strong presence of Pb and W. A strong inhomogeneity over the crystal sample has been revealed by the photoelastic inspection. Abstract

Plasmonic structures based on stacked layers of metal and dielectric materials excel as broadband absorbers because of the nonlinear relationship between the compound materials’ dispersion characteristics and the multilayered structure’s actual performance. In this work, radiation absorption along the plasmonic absorber is studied. Broadband absorptance spectra play an important role in applications such as photovoltaics, detectors, modulators, and emitters. We propose and analyze plasmonic stacked structures that exhibit high broadband absorption. For this purpose, an inverse design approach has been implemented using a conventional genetic algorithm as a global optimizer in conjunction with a pattern search as a local optimizer. The proposed strategy found structures with absorption covering the visible spectrum, maintaining its performance for high incident angles.

Abstract

Curcumin-containing nanocapsule powder formulations have not been used in ruminant feed to date, despite the fact that curcumin is known to be a functional food additive. The objective of this study was to determine whether ethyl polymethacrylate (Eudragit L-100) nanocapsules loaded with curcumin (N-CU) would improve health and growth of lambs. Thirty-two male Lacaune lambs (body weight [BW] = 16 ± 0.99 kg; 45 d of age) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: T0, T1, T2 and T4, representing supplementation of curcumin at 0, 1, 2, and 4 mg/kg concentrate, respectively. The animals in each treatment were allocated in 4 pens of 2 lambs each (8 lambs per treatment). The experiment lasted 17 d, with samples and measurements collected on d 0, 7, 12, and 17. Abstract

Recurrent mutations within EGR2 were recently reported in advanced-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients and associated with a worse outcome. To study their prognostic impact, 2403 CLL patients were examined for mutations in the EGR2 hotspot region including a screening (n=1283) and two validation cohorts (UK CLL4 trial patients, n=366; CLL Research Consortium (CRC) patients, n=490). Targeted deep-sequencing of 27 known/postulated CLL driver genes was also performed in 38 EGR2-mutated patients to assess concurrent mutations. EGR2 mutations were detected in 91/2403 (3.8%) investigated cases, and associated with younger age at diagnosis, advanced clinical stage, high CD38 expression and unmutated IGHV genes. EGR2-mutated patients frequently carried ATM lesions (42%), TP53 aberrations (18%) and NOTCH1/FBXW7 mutations (16%). EGR2 mutations independently predicted shorter time-to-first-treatment (TTFT) and overall survival (OS) in the screening cohort; they were confirmed associated with reduced TTFT and OS in the CRC cohort and independently predicted short OS from randomization in the UK CLL4 cohort. A particularly dismal outcome was observed among EGR2-mutated patients who also carried TP53 aberrations. In summary, EGR2 mutations were independently associated with an unfavorable prognosis, comparable to CLL patients carrying TP53 aberrations, suggesting that EGR2-mutated patients represent a new patient subgroup with very poor outcome.

34. Volumetric Power Density Distribution in Low Voltage Cables With Maxwell Equations and FEM Simulations

Abstract

Air voids within cables insulated with cross-linked polyethylene (EPR) are identified as vulnerabilities due to their association with operational charges resulting from partial discharges. These voids generate intense and nonuniform electric fields, leading to an increase in dissipated power. Therefore, this work investigates the impact of voids in the conductor and insulating layers of three-phase cables. Simulations are carried out using COMSOL Multiphysics software based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). The research focuses on evaluating the behavior of electrical cables with copper and aluminum cores with inserted air voids. A voltage of 1 kV, frequency of 60 Hz with alternating current (ac), and a 120° phase shift are applied. In addition, an analytical solution based on Maxwell’s equations and Ampere’s law is developed for two cables of identical cylindrical geometry and a length of L =15 m for copper and aluminum cores. It was found that power cables with copper cores exhibit better conduction of volumetric power density, resulting in superior efficiency in the transmission of electrical energy in three-phase systems compared to aluminum power cables. However, under the effect of electric field accumulation, the present voids may rupture, triggering a series of detrimental phenomena to the functioning of the electrical system. Partial discharge activity is influenced by various factors, including applied voltage, shape, size, and location of voids, as well as the presence of small protrusions on the conductor surface. The results reveal an increase in volumetric power densities attributed to the presence of air voids, highlighting the significant influence of the voids’ location on the behavior and functionality of the electrical system during operation.

Abstract

We describe here the synthesis of isoselenochromenes via a nucleophilic selenocyclization reaction of benzodiynes with sodium selenide. The central parameters that affect this cyclization reaction were studied, and the best reaction conditions were applied to different substrates to determine the scope of the method. The results indicated that isoselenochromenes were obtained in higher yields when the reactions were performed by the addition of NaBH4 (3 equiv), at room temperature, under nitrogen atmosphere, to a solution of elemental selenium (2 equiv) in dimethylformamide (2 mL). After 1 h, a benzodiynes (0.25 mmol) solution in EtOH (3 mL) was added at room temperature. The reaction was stirred at 75 °C until the starting material was consumed. The best conditions were applied to benzodiynes having electron‐rich, electron poor aromatic rings, and alkyl groups directly bonded to the alkynes. The same reaction condition was extended to isothiochromene derivatives but failed to prepare isotelurochromenes. The isoselenochromenes were easily transformed into three new classes of organoselenium compounds using classical methods available in the literature. Abstract

In this work, a commercial micro-XRF mapping equipment was adapted to, through data processing, map the characteristic X-ray transmittance throughout samples. The main difference for conventional tests is the production of characteristic x-rays on a metal base, and its detection on the other side of the sample. The transmittance measure can, therefore, be used to estimate, through equation systems, the layer thickness of each material that makes the sample. Samples of radiographic films were used, where the small thicknesses and the great difference in radiopacity between the materials (polyester and silver) are favorable for data acquisition. The results obtained show thickness maps whose values can be checked by other tools, such as micrometers. Such an approach can be extended to cases with more layers, but this directly implies the number of equations to be solved. The applicability can be used in many areas, depending on conditions of material and acquisition.
