Abstract

Research is done on cooperative electrostatic binding of sodium poly(styrenesulfonate)s (PSS) of varying chain length to poly-[diallyl(dimethyl)ammonium chloride-co-acrylamide] (DADMAC-AA) copolymers with varying charge density, which were examined. In conclusion, an increased ion screening by an added electrolyte as well as prolonged storage of the sample increases a to almost 1.0, the behavior can be diagnosed as a pseudo-irreversible or kinetic effect.

40. Sedimentation equilibrium studies of synthetic polyelectrolytes by means of interference optical methods.

Abstract

Synthetic quaternary ammonium polyelectrolytes have been investigated in aqueous 0.5 M NaCl solution by analytical ultracentrifugation using the "low speed" sedimentation equilibrium technique with interference detection. Lower molecular mass poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (poly-DADMAC)-samples (MW<105 g/mol) and poly(methacryloyloxyethylbenzyl-dimethylammonium chloride) (poly-MADAMBQ) exhibit "ideal" sedimentation equilibrium behavior. Linear log [η] vs. log MW — and log sO vs. log MW relations could be derived for poly-MADAMBQ. For higher molecular mass poly-DADMAC (MW>105 g/mol) and DADMAC-acrylamide copolymers a "non-ideal" solution behavior was observed resulting in deviations between molecular masses Mw obtained by sedimentation equilibrium and by elastic light scattering. The experimental conditions desired for the molecular characterization of synthetic polyelectrolytes by sedimentation equilibrium are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The reaction between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes at the interface between their aqueous solutions, being the basis for the formation of flat membranes or microcapsules, has been studied with sodium cellulose sulphate and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) as reaction components. By supplemental monitoring of the kinetics of membrane formation at thin ring layers additional informattion was obtained supporting the proposed mechanism of the process. In the very beginning at the boundary a semipermeable primary membrane is formed, which controls further membrane growth by its diffusion resistance. Osmotic pressure differences resulting from difference counterion concentrations inside and outside the capsule additionally remarkably affect the process. Capsule properties depend directly and indirectly on the polymerchemical features of the used polyelectrolytes and vary in a wide range. For each specific combination the capsule properties can be additionally controlled by the main process variables as reaction time, polyer concentrations and presence of low molecular electrolytes.
