Abstract

This review article deals with legal texts prominently inscribed on a city gate of Timnaʿ, the capital of the Ancient South Arabian state of Qataban. Following a sketch of the history of the region and its languages, the reviewer considers the legal texts published in the reviewed volume dealing with homicide, the attribution of tithes, infanticide, and other matters. It is pointed out that their interpretation by the author would have benefited from comparisons with Yemeni anthropological data that have not changed since pre-Islamic times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. A third century ad rhymed hymn from Yemen: The origins of Arabic poetry and literature?

Abstract

This article is a tribute to Muṭahhar al‐Iryānī and Yūsuf 'Abdullāh—two of the most outstanding Yemeni savants of all times. Sadly, both are no longer with us. Muṭahhar passed away in 2016, and Yūsuf in 2021. In what follows, I present—through my renderings—their last scholarly achievements. They concern a well‐known Sabaean inscription found in 1951 in Mārib. The text is written consecutively and was therefore not recognisable as a poem. In 2005, Muṭahhar al‐Iryānī published the first convincing presentation of this hymn, revealing its poetic structure. His final take on the subject is the strophe and verse arrangement offered in the present article. Yūsuf 'Abdullāh is the discoverer of another rhymed Sabaean hymn. Both authors are convinced that these are the antecedents of the poetry of the Arabs. Substance‐wise, the two scholars hold different views. In al‐Iryānī's opinion, the hymn describes a battle of the Sabaean army. Victory is achieved through the intervention of the Sabaean high god Almaqah. On the other hand, Yūsuf 'Abdullāh interprets the hymn as a rain rogation myth. He parallels it with the traditional rain processions of the Yemeni countryside, which he sees as a ritual survival from pre‐Islamic times. Abstract

Forschungen zur Archäologie Außereuropäischer Kulturen, Band 03.1, Als erstes Ergebnis der 1905 aufgenommenen diplomatischen Beziehungen mit dem Kaiserreich Äthiopien wurden im Frühjahr 1906 deutsche Ausgrabungen in der heiligen Stadt Aksum unter der Leitung des Orientalisten Enno Littmann (1875–1958) durchgeführt. Es war ein überaus erfolgreiches Unternehmen, das Kaiser Wilhelm II. tatkräftig unterstützte. 1913 wurden die Ergebnisse in vier Bänden publiziert. In zwei Bänden werden nun neue Einblicke zur Deutschen Aksum-Expedition vorgelegt. Band 1 erläutert die Hintergründe, beschreibt Land und Geschichte Eritreas, stellt die Akteure und die Stationen der Reise in Eritrea vor und beschreibt die aufgesuchten archäologischen Plätze. Band 2 wird sich dem Aufenthalt in Äthiopien widmen. Diese Publikation richtet sich nicht nur an Fachwissenschaftler sondern auch an alle an Eritrea und Äthiopien Interessierte., As a first result of the diplomatic relations with the Ethiopian Empire, which were established in 1905, archaeological excavations were started in Spring 1906 in the sacred city of Aksum under supervision of the orientalist Enno Littmann (1875-1958). This has proven to be a very successful campaign, generously supported by the German Emperor WilhemII. The results of that campaign were published in four volumes in1913. New aspects of the German Aksum-Expedition are now published in two volumes. Volume 1 describes background, land and history of Eritrea, presents the people and locations involved. The forthcoming volume 2 will be mainly dealing with Ethiopia. This publication is not exclusively targeted on scientists, but adresses all people interested in Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Abstract

Long-term monitoring of bridges requires the early detection of spreading damage because very often the damage is not really visible. For many decades engineers and scientists relayed on dynamic methods especially modal ones. However, after fundamental tests by the U.S. FHWA in 1993, it became evident that more successful methods should be developed, but no innovation really happened. A substantial innovative detection method started four years ago from Lagrange Multiplier Testing which eventually resulted in experimental verification based on measurement of deflection and curvature of the bridge beam and together the methodological combination of both.
