Motivated by a repair problem for fractional repetition codes in distributed storage, each block of any Steiner quadruple system (SQS) of order $v$ is partitioned into two pairs. Each pair in such a partition is called a nested design pair and its multiplicity is the number of times it is a pair in this partition. Such a partition of each block is considered as a new block design called a nested Steiner quadruple system. Several related questions on this type of design are considered in this paper: What is the maximum multiplicity of the nested design pair with minimum multiplicity? What is the minimum multiplicity of the nested design pair with maximum multiplicity? Are there nested quadruple systems in which all the nested design pairs have the same multiplicity? Of special interest are nested quadruple systems in which all the $\binom{v}{2}$ pairs are nested design pairs with the same multiplicity. Several constructions of nested quadruple systems are considered and in particular classic constructions of SQS are examined.

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

Centralized social networks have experienced a transformative impact on our digital era communication, connection, and information-sharing information. However, it has also raised significant concerns regarding users' privacy and individual rights. In response to these concerns, this paper proposes a novel Decentralized Social Network employing Blockchain technology and Decentralized Storage Networks completed by Access Control Smart Contracts. The initial phase comprises a comprehensive literature review, delving into decentralized social networks, explaining the review methodology, and presenting the resulting findings. Building upon these findings and an analysis of previous research gaps, we propose a novel architecture for decentralized social networks. In conclusion, the principal results highlight the benefit of our decentralized social network to protect user privacy. Moreover, the users have all rights to their posted information following the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

Quantum error correction provides a path to reach practical quantum computing by combining multiple physical qubits into a logical qubit, where the logical error rate is suppressed exponentially as more qubits are added. However, this exponential suppression only occurs if the physical error rate is below a critical threshold. In this work, we present two surface code memories operating below this threshold: a distance-7 code and a distance-5 code integrated with a real-time decoder. The logical error rate of our larger quantum memory is suppressed by a factor of $\Lambda$ = 2.14 $\pm$ 0.02 when increasing the code distance by two, culminating in a 101-qubit distance-7 code with 0.143% $\pm$ 0.003% error per cycle of error correction. This logical memory is also beyond break-even, exceeding its best physical qubit's lifetime by a factor of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.3. We maintain below-threshold performance when decoding in real time, achieving an average decoder latency of 63 $\mu$s at distance-5 up to a million cycles, with a cycle time of 1.1 $\mu$s. To probe the limits of our error-correction performance, we run repetition codes up to distance-29 and find that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring approximately once every hour, or 3 $\times$ 10$^9$ cycles. Mainframe operating systems, despite their inception in the 1940s, continue to support critical sectors like finance and government. However, these systems are often viewed as outdated, requiring extensive maintenance and modernization. Addressing this challenge necessitates innovative tools that can understand and interact with legacy codebases. To this end, we introduce XMainframe, a state-of-the-art large language model (LLM) specifically designed with knowledge of mainframe legacy systems and COBOL codebases. Our solution involves the creation of an extensive data collection pipeline to produce high-quality training datasets, enhancing XMainframe's performance in this specialized domain. Additionally, we present MainframeBench, a comprehensive benchmark for assessing mainframe knowledge, including multiple-choice questions, question answering, and COBOL code summarization. Our empirical evaluations demonstrate that XMainframe consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art LLMs across these tasks. Specifically, XMainframe achieves 30% higher accuracy than DeepSeek-Coder on multiple-choice questions, doubles the BLEU score of Mixtral-Instruct 8x7B on question answering, and scores six times higher than GPT-3.5 on COBOL summarization. Our work highlights the potential of XMainframe to drive significant advancements in managing and modernizing legacy systems, thereby enhancing productivity and saving time for software developers.

The structure of linear dependence relations between coded symbols of a linear code, irrespective of specific coefficients involved, is referred to as the {\em topology} of the code. The specification of coefficients is referred to as an {\em instantiation} of the topology. In this paper, we propose a new block circulant topology $T_{[\mu,\lambda,\omega]}(\rho)$ parameterized by integers $\rho \geq 2$, $\omega \geq 1$, $\lambda \geq 2$, and $\mu$ a multiple of $\lambda$. In this topology, the code has $\mu$ local codes with $\rho$ parity-check (p-c) constraints and a total of $\mu\rho$ p-c equations fully define the code. Next, we construct a class of block circulant (BC) codes ${\cal C}_{\text{BC}}[\mu,\lambda,\omega,\rho]$ with blocklength $n=\mu(\rho+\omega)$, dimension $k=\mu\omega$ that instantiate $T_{[\mu,\lambda,\omega]}(\rho)$. Every local code of ${\cal C}_{\text{BC}}[\mu,\lambda,\omega,\rho]$ is a $[\rho+\lambda\omega,\lambda\omega,\rho+1]$ generalized Reed-Solomon (RS) code. The overlap between supports of local codes helps to enhance the minimum distance $\rho+1$ to $2\rho+1$, without compromising much on the rate. We provide an efficient, parallelizable decoding algorithm to correct $2\rho$ erasures when $\lambda=2$. Finally, we illustrate that the BC codes serve as a viable alternative to 2D RS codes in protocols designed to tackle blockchain networks' data availability (DA) problem. In these protocols, every node in a network of light nodes randomly queries symbols from a codeword stored in full nodes and verifies them using a cryptographic commitment scheme. For the same performance in tackling the DA problem, the BC code requires querying a smaller number of symbols than a comparable 2D RS code for a fixed high rate. Furthermore, the number of local codes in the BC code is typically smaller, yielding a reduction in the complexity of realizing the commitment scheme.

Understanding how interacting particles approach thermal equilibrium is a major challenge of quantum simulators. Unlocking the full potential of such systems toward this goal requires flexible initial state preparation, precise time evolution, and extensive probes for final state characterization. We present a quantum simulator comprising 69 superconducting qubits which supports both universal quantum gates and high-fidelity analog evolution, with performance beyond the reach of classical simulation in cross-entropy benchmarking experiments. Emulating a two-dimensional (2D) XY quantum magnet, we leverage a wide range of measurement techniques to study quantum states after ramps from an antiferromagnetic initial state. We observe signatures of the classical Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, as well as strong deviations from Kibble-Zurek scaling predictions attributed to the interplay between quantum and classical coarsening of the correlated domains. This interpretation is corroborated by injecting variable energy density into the initial state, which enables studying the effects of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in targeted parts of the eigenspectrum. Finally, we digitally prepare the system in pairwise-entangled dimer states and image the transport of energy and vorticity during thermalization. These results establish the efficacy of superconducting analog-digital quantum processors for preparing states across many-body spectra and unveiling their thermalization dynamics.

We generalize the problem of recovering a lost/erased symbol in a Reed-Solomon code to the scenario in which some side information about the lost symbol is known. The side information is represented as a set $S$ of linearly independent combinations of the sub-symbols of the lost symbol. When $S = \varnothing$, this reduces to the standard problem of repairing a single codeword symbol. When $S$ is a set of sub-symbols of the erased one, this becomes the repair problem with partially lost/erased symbol. We first establish that the minimum repair bandwidth depends on $|S|$ and not the content of $S$ and construct a lower bound on the repair bandwidth of a linear repair scheme with side information $S$. We then consider the well-known subspace-polynomial repair schemes and show that their repair bandwidths can be optimized by choosing the right subspaces. Finally, we demonstrate several parameter regimes where the optimal bandwidths can be achieved for full-length Reed-Solomon codes.

We investigate the problem of privately recovering a single erasure for Reed-Solomon codes with low communication bandwidths. For an $[n,k]_{q^\ell}$ code with $n-k\geq q^{m}+t-1$, we construct a repair scheme that allows a client to recover an arbitrary codeword symbol without leaking its index to any set of $t$ colluding helper nodes at a repair bandwidth of $(n-1)(\ell-m)$ sub-symbols in $\mathbb{F}_q$. When $t=1$, this reduces to the bandwidth of existing repair schemes based on subspace polynomials. We prove the optimality of the proposed scheme when $n=q^\ell$ under a reasonable assumption about the schemes being used. Denoising diffusion models have become ubiquitous for generative modeling. The core idea is to transport the data distribution to a Gaussian by using a diffusion. Approximate samples from the data distribution are then obtained by estimating the time-reversal of this diffusion using score matching ideas. We follow here a similar strategy to sample from unnormalized probability densities and compute their normalizing constants. However, the time-reversed diffusion is here simulated by using an original iterative particle scheme relying on a novel score matching loss. Contrary to standard denoising diffusion models, the resulting Particle Denoising Diffusion Sampler (PDDS) provides asymptotically consistent estimates under mild assumptions. In this paper, we focus on the design of binary constant weight codes that admit low-complexity encoding and decoding algorithms, and that have a size $M=2^k$. For every integer $\ell \geq 3$, we construct a $(n=2^\ell, M=2^{k_{\ell}}, d=2)$ constant weight code ${\cal C}[\ell]$ of weight $\ell$ by encoding information in the gaps between successive $1$'s. The code is associated with an integer sequence of length $\ell$ with a constraint defined as {\em anchor-decodability} that ensures low complexity for encoding and decoding. The complexity of the encoding is linear in the input size $k$, and that of the decoding is poly-logarithmic in the input size $n$, discounting the linear time spent on parsing the input. Both the algorithms do not require expensive computation of binomial coefficients, unlike the case in many existing schemes. Among codes generated by all anchor-decodable sequences, we show that ${\cal C}[\ell]$ has the maximum size with $k_{\ell} \geq \ell^2-\ell\log_2\ell + \log_2\ell - 0.279\ell - 0.721$. As $k$ is upper bounded by $\ell^2-\ell\log_2\ell +O(\ell)$ information-theoretically, the code ${\cal C}[\ell]$ is optimal in its size with respect to two higher order terms of $\ell$. In particular, $k_\ell$ meets the upper bound for $\ell=3$ and one-bit away for $\ell=4$. On the other hand, we show that ${\cal C}[\ell]$ is not unique in attaining $k_{\ell}$ by constructing an alternate code ${\cal \hat{C}}[\ell]$ again parameterized by an integer $\ell \geq 3$ with a different low-complexity decoder, yet having the same size $2^{k_{\ell}}$ when $3 \leq \ell \leq 7$. Finally, we also derive new codes by modifying ${\cal C}[\ell]$ that offer a wider range on blocklength and weight while retaining low complexity for encoding and decoding. We investigate in this work the problem of Erasure Combinatorial Batch Codes, in which $n$ files are stored on $m$ servers so that every set of $n-r$ servers allows a client to retrieve at most $k$ distinct files by downloading at most $t$ files from each server. Previous studies have solved this problem for the special case of $t=1$ using Combinatorial Batch Codes. We tackle the general case $t \geq 1$ using a generalization of Hall's theorem. We investigate in this work a recently emerging type of scam token called Trapdoor, which has caused the investors hundreds of millions of dollars in the period of 2020-2023. In a nutshell, by embedding logical bugs and/or owner-only features to the smart contract codes, a Trapdoor token allows users to buy but prevent them from selling. We develop the first systematic classification of Trapdoor tokens and a comprehensive list of their programming techniques, accompanied by a detailed analysis on representative scam contracts. We also construct the very first dataset of 1859 manually verified Trapdoor tokens on Uniswap and build effective opcode-based detection tools using popular machine learning classifiers such as Random Forest, XGBoost, and LightGBM, which achieve at least 0.98% accuracies, precisions, recalls, and F1-scores., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

The Ponzi scheme, an old-fashioned fraud, is now popular on the Ethereum blockchain, causing considerable financial losses to many crypto investors. A few Ponzi detection methods have been proposed in the literature, most of which detect a Ponzi scheme based on its smart contract source code. This contract-code-based approach, while achieving very high accuracy, is not robust because a Ponzi developer can fool a detection model by obfuscating the opcode or inventing a new profit distribution logic that cannot be detected. On the contrary, a transaction-based approach could improve the robustness of detection because transactions, unlike smart contracts, are harder to be manipulated. However, the current transaction-based detection models achieve fairly low accuracy. In this paper, we aim to improve the accuracy of the transaction-based models by employing time-series features, which turn out to be crucial in capturing the life-time behaviour a Ponzi application but were completely overlooked in previous works. We propose a new set of 85 features (22 known account-based and 63 new time-series features), which allows off-the-shelf machine learning algorithms to achieve up to 30% higher F1-scores compared to existing works., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

A foundational assumption of quantum error correction theory is that quantum gates can be scaled to large processors without exceeding the error-threshold for fault tolerance. Two major challenges that could become fundamental roadblocks are manufacturing high performance quantum hardware and engineering a control system that can reach its performance limits. The control challenge of scaling quantum gates from small to large processors without degrading performance often maps to non-convex, high-constraint, and time-dependent control optimization over an exponentially expanding configuration space. Here we report on a control optimization strategy that can scalably overcome the complexity of such problems. We demonstrate it by choreographing the frequency trajectories of 68 frequency-tunable superconducting qubits to execute single- and two-qubit gates while mitigating computational errors. When combined with a comprehensive model of physical errors across our processor, the strategy suppresses physical error rates by $\sim3.7\times$ compared with the case of no optimization. Furthermore, it is projected to achieve a similar performance advantage on a distance-23 surface code logical qubit with 1057 physical qubits. Our control optimization strategy solves a generic scaling challenge in a way that can be adapted to a variety of quantum operations, algorithms, and computing architectures.

Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the 1D Heisenberg model were conjectured to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we study the probability distribution, $P(\mathcal{M})$, of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center. The first two moments of $P(\mathcal{M})$ show superdiffusive behavior, a hallmark of KPZ universality. However, the third and fourth moments rule out the KPZ conjecture and allow for evaluating other theories. Our results highlight the importance of studying higher moments in determining dynamic universality classes and provide key insights into universal behavior in quantum systems.

Comments within source code are essential for developers to comprehend the code's purpose and ensure its correct usage. However, as codebases evolve, maintaining an accurate alignment between the comments and the code becomes increasingly challenging. Recognizing the growing interest in automated solutions for detecting and correcting differences between code and its accompanying comments, current methods rely primarily on heuristic rules. In contrast, this paper presents DocChecker, a tool powered by deep learning. DocChecker is adept at identifying inconsistencies between code and comments, and it can also generate synthetic comments. This capability enables the tool to detect and correct instances where comments do not accurately reflect their corresponding code segments. We demonstrate the effectiveness of DocChecker using the Just-In-Time and CodeXGlue datasets in different settings. Particularly, DocChecker achieves a new State-of-the-art result of 72.3% accuracy on the Inconsistency Code-Comment Detection (ICCD) task and 33.64 BLEU-4 on the code summarization task against other Large Language Models (LLMs), even surpassing GPT 3.5 and CodeLlama. Motivated by the application of Reed-Solomon codes to recently emerging decentralized storage systems such as Storj and Filebase/Sia, we study the problem of designing compact repair groups for recovering multiple failures in a decentralized manner. Here, compactness means that the corresponding trace repair schemes of these groups of helpers can be generated from a single or a few seed repair schemes, thus saving the time and space required for finding and storing them. The goal is to design compact repair groups that can tolerate as many failures as possible. It turns out that the maximum number of failures a collection of repair groups can tolerate equals the size of a minimum hitting set of a collection of subsets of the finite field {\mathbb{F}_{q^{\ell}}} minus one. When the repair groups for each symbol are generated from a single subspace, we establish a pair of asymptotically tight lower bound and upper bound on the size of such a minimum hitting set. Using Burnside's Lemma and the M\"{o}bius inversion formula, we determine a number of subspaces that together attain the upper bound on the minimum hitting set size when the repair groups are generated from multiple subspaces.

We present The Vault, a dataset of high-quality code-text pairs in multiple programming languages for training large language models to understand and generate code. We present methods for thoroughly extracting samples that use both rule-based and deep learning-based methods to ensure that they contain high-quality pairs of code and text, resulting in a dataset of 43 million high-quality code-text pairs. Our extensive evaluations on common coding tasks including code generation, code search and code summarization show that when fine-tuning Code Large Language Models on The Vault, such models outperform the same models trained on other datasets such as CodeSearchNet.
