Abstract

An expert system prototype conceptualized on a personal computer environment can function as an off-line decision-support system for metal-cutting operations. This expert system possesses an expansive modular architecture and its heuristic knowledge presents some statistical techniques to solve problems related to the high-level tasks it performs. Other advantages of the expert system prototype include low cost and flexibility.

Abstract

The reliance on fossil fuels is one of the most challenging problems that need to be dealt with vigorously in recent times. This is because using them is not sustainable and leads to serious environmental issues, such as: air pollution and global warming. This condition affects economic security and development. An alternative to fossil fuel is highly possible which will be more environmentally friendly, sustainable and efficient as well. Among all the different technologies associated with renewable energy, fuel cell technologies represent one of the most promising technological advancement to curb the situation. In this paper, an overview of the technology and its advantages and disadvantages compared with competitive technologies was revealed. The application of different fuel cell types in the stationary and portable sectors was covered. Furthermore, recent challenges and promising developments of current fuel cell technologies in different studied applications were reviewed. Some possible solutions to the challenges were named in this paper for both the portable and stationary fuel cell applications. The paper further seeks to expose the world to the current progress made in the fuel cell industry up to date and possible areas that needs intensified research and modifications to make the fuel cell industry more vibrant and buoyant.

Abstract

The article presents the results of an environmental benchmarking activity performed within the ADA project "positive actions for the diffusion of good environmental practices in Albania" financed within the INTERREG UE program. After an initial analysis of the state of the art in Albania on environmental benchmarking analysis is described whthin a selected sample. A new benchmarking model was adapted to this aim for the diffusion of good environmental practices in Albania. The model use was supported by the AHP, for prioritizing the perceptions of stakeholders on their relative severity of environmental routines.

Abstract

International audience; One of the emerging control problem in manufacturing systems is the "information interoperability (I2)" problem: information is required to be coherent and congruent with the specific use, particularly in interfacing manufacturing processes, at any stage of the product lifecycle management. Lack of comprehension, misunderstandings as well as redundant activities are typically signs of I2 problems. Standardisation initiatives, in the frame of ISO and IEC (IEC 62264), try to answer these problems by specifying the information related to products, manufacturing resources and processes. These represent the most assessed corpus of knowledge for business to manufacturing (B2M) applications interoperability, available so far for studying and solving the I2 issues. This paper tries to trace a path for studying the I2 problems in production-control systems, by a formalisation procedure to build an ontology-based model, based on the IEC 62264 standard.

Abstract

In planning the coordinate measuring machine based inspection of a mechanical component feature, cleverness may be added with the definition of an empirical model representing the “signature” left by the process the feature went through. This paper focuses on two industrial related case studies and shows the benefits in terms of inspection costs reduction due to a proper selection of measuring points number and position. A new approach in tolerance evaluation based on process’ signature rebuilding is also proposed.
