Abstract

Sightings and strandings of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) along the coast of Buenos Aires Province in Argentina were once sporadic but have increased by up to 640% since 2018. Here, we assess the trends and seasonality of occurrence and anthropogenic-derived mortality in this population between 2003 and 2021. Most of the humpback whales found dead were young animals, and 27% of the stranded whales showed signs of anthropogenic interactions. The information collected from Buenos Aires Province over the past two decades clearly indicates that humpback whales are becoming more frequent and growing in numbers along the Argentinean coast. For their protection, governmental regulations need to be implemented as soon as possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Baseline data of the presence of meso and microplastics in the digestive tract of a commercially important teleost fish from the Rio de la Plata Estuary System (Southwest Atlantic Ocean)

Abstract

White croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is the most important commercial fish of Río de la Plata Estuary System (RLPES), one of the most extensive on the Southwest Atlantic coast. This paper describes the occurrence, abundance, and type of plastic debris (PD) present on the digestive tracts of 65 white croakers in the RLPES. Eighty percent of analyzed individuals had ingested PD, 156 of which (FO = 83.9%) were thread-like plastics and 30 were fragments (FO = 16.1%). The average number of pieces per digestive tract was 2.83 ± 3.14. Microplastic represented 85% of PD, most of them were < 2 mm and the prominent color was blue. Our results demonstrate the high occurrence of meso and microplastics in one of the most important species from an ecological and commercial viewpoint in the RLPES. The RLPES is the area of the Southwest Atlantic Ocean that concentrates most of the records of plastic waste in the environment, where the white croaker is the main commercial fish. In addition, M. furnieri is a main prey for several predators in the area. Although preliminary, this is a relevant contribution to the knowledge of marine debris pollution and its impact on the marine community of the region., La corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri) es el pez comercial más importante del Sistema del Estuario del Río de la Plata (RLPES), uno de los más extensos en la costa atlántica sudoccidental. En este trabajo se describe la ocurrencia, abundancia y tipo de desechos plásticos (DP) presentes en el tracto digestivo de 65 ejemplares de corvina rubia del RLPES. El 80% de los individuos analizados había ingerido DP, de los cuales 156 eran plásticos filiformes (FO = 83,9%) y 30 eran fragmentos (FO = 16,1%). El número medio de piezas por tracto digestivo fue de 2,83 ± 3,14. El microplástico representó el 85% de los DP, la mayoría de las cuales eran < 2 mm y el color predominante fue el azul. Nuestros resultados demuestran la alta ocurrencia de meso y microplásticos en una de las especies más importantes desde el punto de vista ecológico y comercial en el RLPES. El RLPES es el área del Océano Atlántico Sudoccidental que concentra la mayor parte de los registros de desechos plásticos en el medio ambiente, donde la corvina rubia es el principal pez comercial. Además, M. furnieri constituye una presa principal de varios depredadores de la zona. Aunque preliminar, esta es una contribución relevante al conocimiento de la contaminación por desechos marinos y su impacto en los organismos del Océano Atlántico Sudoccidental, particularmente en el RLPES.

19. Echocardiographic left ventricular structure and function in healthy, non-sedated southern sea Lions (Otaria flavescens)

Abstract

The goal of this study was to test transthoracic echocardiography as a method to characterize heart morphology and function in the southern sea lion (SSL) (Otaria flavescens) for health evaluation. Four clinically healthy captive SSLs (mean weight 110 ± 17.5 kg) were trained to be examined by transthoracic echocardiography at Mar del Plata Aquarium in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Two-dimensional guided M-mode images were obtained using a portable cardiovascular ultrasound system equipped with a 1.5 to 3.5 MHz convex 3S phased-array transducer. The mean left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole was 73 ± 5.8 mm; the mean interventricular septum thickness and posterior wall thickness at end-diastole were 9 ± 1.1 mm and 8.9 ± 2 mm, respectively. Fractional shortening and ejection fraction were 44.6 ± 1.7% and 74.4 ± 1.7%, respectively. The left atrial diameter-to-aortic root index was 0.92 ± 0.03. The most suitable position for obtaining good quality images was the left lateral recumbency (with slight inclination to 45°), with the probe placed on the left side of the thorax, ventrally just near the sternum, at the level of the caudal portion of the left pectoral fin. The best acoustic window in relation to the breathing cycle occurred between the end of the expiration and the beginning of the next inspiration. We successfully demonstrated that the in vivo structure and function of the SSL heart can be safely and effectively evaluated by transthoracic echocardiography in captive trained animals. These data have clinical and research implications for evaluating diseases of the cardiopulmonary system in pinnipeds. Fil: Castro, Eduardo Fidel. Abstract

El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo describir y evaluar el método de marcado de lobos marinos comunes por decoloración del pelo, señalando ventajas y posibilidades de aplicación futuras. Para el marcado se utilizó un sello compuesto por letras y números desmontables donde se coloca el decolorante, conectado a una vara extensible que permite la correcta aplicación de la marca. Con esta metodología las marcas obtenidas tuvieron una duración máxima de 347 días perfectamente visibles, motivo por el cual y sumado al bajo costo y sencillez de aplicación, se sugiere que esta técnica es recomendable para estudios no invasivos en pinnípedos a corto y mediano plazo. The aim of this paper is to describe and evaluate the use of the hair discoloration method in South American sea lions, with an emphasis on its advantages and its potential use in future studies. For marking, stamp removable letters and numbers were used, connected to an extensible rod. The bleached marks obtained had a maximum duration of 347 days perfectly visible and, because of the combination of low cost and application simplicity, this technique is considered suitable for both short and long term non-invasive studies in pinnipeds.
