This study quantitatively evaluates the effectiveness of three main options for the adaptation of crop farming to climate change (i.e., shift of planting dates, increase/addition of irrigation, and resilient hybrids/cultivars) in Greece, a country in southern Europe. The potential effect of each option on the yields of several crops in all Greek regions is estimated for 2021–2040 and 2041–2060 and compared with those under the historical local climate of 1986–2005, by using agronomic and statistical regression models, and data from different climatic simulations and climate change scenarios. Our results reveal that all the adaptation options examined have the potential to significantly reduce crop yield losses occurring under no adaptation, particularly during 2021–2040 when for many regions and crops more than half of the losses can be compensated for. Notably, in some cases during this period, the measures examined resulted in crop yields that are higher than those under the historical climate. However, the effectiveness of the measures diminished significantly in 2041–2060 under very adverse climate change conditions, highlighting the dynamic nature of adaptation. The study assesses the direct effects of climate change by 2060, including extreme events, on the productivity of regional crop farming and livestock in Greece, and the broader socio-economic effects on the agri-food and other sectors. Different approaches (i.e., agronomic models, statistical regression models, and equations linking thermal stress to livestock output) were combined to estimate the effects on productivity from changes in the average values of climatic parameters, and subsequently the direct economic effects from this long-term climate change. Recorded damages from extreme events together with climatic thresholds per event and crop were combined to estimate the direct economic effects of these extremes. The broader socio-economic effects were then estimated through input–output analysis. Under average levels of future extreme events, the total direct economic losses for Greek agriculture due to climate change will be significant, from EUR 437 million/year to EUR 1 billion/year. These losses approximately double when indirect effects on other sectors using agricultural products as inputs (e.g., food and beverage, hotels, and restaurants) are considered, and escalate further under a tenfold impact of extreme events. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy has been recommended as a treatment option for ovarian cancer with peritoneal dissemination. Although its treatment duration is significantly shorter, intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal perfusion chemotherapy (HIPEC) has several advantages over simple intraperitoneal instillation chemotherapy. While platinum compounds have usually been used, only a few have administered paclitaxel during HIPEC. Its large molecular weight suggests a much more favorable pharmacokinetic profile than that of platinum compounds. The pharmacokinetics of paclitaxel during and after HIPEC have not been studied before. Thirteen women, mainly with ovarian cancer, underwent cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC with 175 mg/m2 paclitaxel for 2 h. Morbidity was noted. Peritoneal fluid samples and blood samples were harvested during and until 5 days after HIPEC for pharmacokinetic study in ten patients. No treatment-related mortality was noted. Overall morbidity was 38% (two wound infections, one deep venous thrombosis, two grade 1 thrombopenia, one grade 2 neutropenia, and one grade 3 pancytopenia). Mean maximal intraperitoneal paclitaxel concentration was 101 mg/L, which was an average of 1178 times higher than the peak plasma levels. The peritoneal fluid versus plasma AUC ratio was 1462 for the 2-h HIPEC duration and 366 for the total 5-day study period. Cytotoxic drug concentrations were detected in peritoneal fluid for a mean period of 2.7 days, despite drainage of the drug solution after 2 h of treatment. HIPEC with paclitaxel following cytoreductive surgery is feasible, relatively safe, and associated with a highly favorable pharmacokinetic profile, despite its short treatment duration. Larger studies with a more homogenous patient cohort and adequate follow-up should be performed to demonstrate its efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Fatty acid composition of adipose tissue is a most reliable biomarker of long-term dietary fatty acid intake. Few studies have implemented biomarkers of fatty acid intake in relation to breast cancer. In this study the relation between adipose tissue composition and breast cancer was investigated., Patients and Methods: Fatty acid composition in breast and buttock adipose tissue from 94 Greek women with breast cancer and 57 with benign breast tumors was determined. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the association between fatty acid groups and breast cancer risk., Results: In pre-menopausal women, elevated total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in breast adipose tissue and N-3 PUFA in buttock adipose tissue were associated with reduced odds of breast cancer (odds ratio, OR=0.19; 95% confidence interval, CI=0.05-0.76, p<0.02 and OR=0.02; 95% CI=0.0009-0.36, p<0.009)., Conclusion: Adipose total PUFA and N-3 PUFA were inversely-related to breast cancer risk in Greek pre-menopausal women. These results may have specific impact on habitual fat intake recommendations.

Background: The temporary use of a gastric balloon for the treatment of obesity grade 1 and 2 is increasing worldwide,whereas in grade 3 obesity, it is implanted as a tool for preoperative adjuvant weight loss. The aim of this retrospective cohort analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of weight reduction and to describe the risk profile of the method., Methods: Retrospective cohort analysis of 4 obesity centers where gastric balloons had been regularly implanted since 2001., Results: Between February 2001 and April 2008, the gastric balloon(BIB Intragastric Balloon System; Allergan Medical,Irvine, CA, USA) was implanted in 634 patients. The gender ratio was 31.5% males to 68.5% females; the average age was 41.5 years. The average initial weight was 126 kg. The initial BMI at implantation of the gastric balloon was 42.5 kg/m2.The implantation of the prosthesis was uncomplicated in all cases. Average weight loss was 20.75 kg or 7.05 BMI points, respectively.
