The heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) was studied in a fluidized bed reactor over titania coated gamma alumina particles. A 24 factorial design analysis was conducted to determine the effect of influencing parameters, namely, titania loading, initial concentration of MEK, relative humidity, and superficial gas velocity on photocatalytic degradation of MEK. The analysis of variance revealed that both main and interaction effects of parameters are statistically significant. Increasing initial concentration of IVIEK, relative humidity, and superficial gas velocity from low to high level decreased the efficiency of MEK degradation, whereas process efficiency was promoted by increasing of titania loading. Due to the positive role of titania loading in MEK photocatalytic degradation, at higher titania loading, increase in initial concentration of MEK, relative humidity, and superficial gas velocity did not decrease the degradation of MEK significantly. A regression model was developed for photocatalytic degradation of MEK in a fluidized bed reactor, and was evaluated using residual analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gas solid Photocatalytic oxidation of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) was investigated in a fluidized bed reactor of Ti02 nanoparticles. Ti02 was coated on the gamma alumina particles to improve the fluidization of catalyst and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) methods. The hydrodynamics and reactions are both important upon dealing with the performance of the fluidized bed reactors. Among the reaction and hydrodynamic parameters, the effects of relative humidity, initial concentration, and superficial gas velocity were investigated on photocatalytic degradation. The relative humidity levels of 25% and 45% with different initial concentrations of 100 and 200 ppm has no significant effect on degradation of MEK. Increasing the superficial gas velocity and relative humidity at initial concentrations of 400 and 800 ppm are resulted to a decrease of degradation. The results showed with the superficial gas velocity of 2.34 cm/s (2Umf) and relative humidity of 25% the high degradation of MEK are obtained. With increasing the initial concentration and superficial gas velocity the rate of the photocatalytic oxidation will increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
