EnglishThe present work recovers Marx’s thought on technological development, from his famous 13th chapter “Machinery and large industry” (Maschinerie und grose Industrie), which belongs to Book I of Das Kapital. Throughout this work, fundamental questions such as capital accumulation, competition and (capitalist) compulsion for surplus value (absolute and relative), the role of class struggle in this respect and how social relations (of production) influence the technological development will be succinctly analyzed. In the end, the contradictions of technology are revealed given the capitalist social relations of production. portuguesO presente trabalho recupera a reflexao de Marx, acerca do desenvolvimento tecnologico, com base no seu famoso 13.o capitulo “Maquinaria e grande industria” (Maschinerie und grose Industrie), pertencente ao Livro I de Das Kapital. Ao longo deste trabalho serao sucintamente analisadas questoes fundamentais como a da acumulacao de capital, a concorrencia e a compulsao (capitalista) por mais-valia (absoluta e relativa), o papel da luta de classes face a isto e a maneira como as relacoes sociais (de producao) vigentes influenciam o desenvolvimento tecnologico. No final destrincam-se as contradicoes da tecnologia dadas as relacoes sociais de producao capitalistas.

This article uses the Marxian analysis of the nineteenth century English factory legislation, to demonstrate how a concrete approach to labor policy in Brazil can be inspired by the guidelines included in the Volume I of Das Kapital. The article covers the period from the regulation established by President Vargas, to the wild deregulation proposed by President Temer, exposing the links between capital accumulation and the Brazilian labor policies. Resumo O presente artigo procura, partindo da análise marxiana sobre a legislação fabril inglesa do século XIX, demonstrar como uma abordagem concreta da política para o trabalho no Brasil pode se inspirar nas determinações explicitadas no Livro I d’O Capital. Para tanto, percorre da normatização varguista à desregulamentação selvagem de Temer, demonstrando sumariamente os vínculos entre a acumulação de capital e as políticas de Estado para o trabalho no Brasil.

This article analyzes some fundamental texts and ideas of Marx in order to think about their contemporary relevance. Marxism has to get rid of the base—superstructure schema, and recognize that the theory of value is too speculative. It should also rethink the different meanings of what Marx called “science”, and have in mind the Hegelian legacy in Marx’s thought. In historical terms, it should not forget the context in which Marx lived (first industrialization) and the kind of revolution that he invoked in his writings. It is also useful to read Das Kapital as nothing more (and nothing less) than a language game, and to go against the conception of history of the introduction to the Grundrisse. We have to read Marx with all his contradictions.El artículo pasa revista a algunos textos e ideas fundamentales de Marx interrogándose por su actualidad. El marxismo tiene que quitarse de encima el esquema base—sobreestructura y reconocer la sobrecarga especulativa de la teoría del valor. También le conviene repensar los distintos significados de lo que Marx denominó como “ciencia”, tener presente la herencia hegeliana en Marx y, en términos históricos, no olvidar el contexto de primera industrialización en que éste vivió o el tipo de revolución que invocó en sus escritos. También es útil leer El Capital nada más (y nada menos) que como un juego del lenguaje e ir contra la concepción de la historia de la introducción de los Grundrisse. En definitiva, hay que leer a Marx con todas sus contradicciones.

Resumo Com a publicação de textos inéditos de Marx, tem sido possível avaliar com maior precisão seu itinerário intelectual. O presente artigo investiga os momentos que conduziram o autor a um plano consistente e logicamente articulado para O Capital, em meio à redação de uma série de planos e manuscritos. Utilizam-se para tanto os Grundrisse, o Manuscrito de 1861-1863 e manuscritos redigidos nos anos seguintes, recentemente publicados. Explora-se assim uma perspectiva sobre os planos de redação da obra econômica de Marx, diferente daquela formulada por Roman Rosdolsky. Abstract The publishing of the unknown manuscripts by Karl Marx has made possible a more detailed analysis of his intellectual legacy. This paper tries to show how and when Marx was able to establish a logical plan for his work Das Kapital. For this matter, the paper examines the manuscripts written between 1857 and 1865, some of them recently published in the new MEGA edition. Those writings may offer a different point of view from Roman Rosdolsky among others on the many plans Marx wrote for his economical work.

By elucidating the inner consistency of the three volumes of Marx's Capital, this book poses the notion of capital as a specific form of organising social time, which itself functions as a thinking subject, relegating the individual to an inanimate object. 61

This thesis deals with the nowadays largely unknown Austrian author Raoul Auernheimer (1876-1948). It is an attempt at a presentation of his life and work, the main part dealing with four of his works, the play Talent (1900), the long story Laurenz Hallers Praterfahrt (1913), the novel Das Kapital (1923) and the autobiographical report Die Zeit im Lager (1939). My purpose is to investigate to what extent his works reflect time, Auernheimers life and the city of Vienna. An introductory chapter on life and work deals with the most important events in his life. It is clear, that he was one of the major personalities in the field of culture in Vienna before and after World War I and an outstanding intellectual who stood for democratic values. When he was 61 the Nazis forced him to leave Austria, after first having put him into the concentration camp Dachau for five months. He was then in exile in the USA where, in spite of a heart condition, he lived on for nine more years. A section on secondary literature and an almost complete catalogue of his works show their versatility, scope and scale. In this context, his significant role as a drama critic, journalist and essayist becomes evident. The city of Vienna is a central theme in the four works I examined and each date of origin (1900, 1913, 1923, 1939) is significant for the work itself. Work and date indicate radical changes in his literary production and constitute a step in the direction of becoming a person who thinks politically. However these changes meant very little to his literary style, which shows continuity. In his works he basically remains a Feuilletonist and playwright. More and more Auernheimer shows his solidarity with the vulnerable groups of society. This is conveyed indirectly, virtually through ‘participating observation‘. By each time describing conditions accurately and exactly, he criticizes current deficiencies. Concerning language it is apparent, that irony is important to his style. Since he views his world critically, he uses it to make social conditions clear. The style of the Feuilleton, in which linguistic brilliance and harmony of text are important components, is characteristic of this author. It is the style of the journalist and critic. In Frankreich wird derzeit ein neuer Anlauf in der Herausgabe des Werkes von Marx und Engels unternommen. Die Rekonstruktion dessen Editionsgeschichte jenseits des Rheins zeigt, dass zahlreiche Mängel mitverantwortlich für eine zum Teil problematische Rezeption sind. Anschließend wird detailliert auf den ersten, seit April 2008 vorliegenden Band der neuen Edition (Kritik des Gothaer Programms) eingegangen. Da dieser nur wenig angetan ist, bisherige Verfehlungen zu beseitigen, wird abschließend ein Plädoyer für die materielle Verbesserung der Arbeitsbedingungen und binationale Kooperation gehalten., A new beginning in the publication of the works of Marx and Engels has recently been made in France. A review of the publication history of their writings on the other side of the Rhine shows that the many defects in previous publications bear some of the blame for a reception that has been problematic in certain respects. This general historical reconstruction is followed by a detailed discussion of the first available volume of the new French edition (The Critique of the Gotha Program), which was released in April 2008. Since the new publication is not likely to eliminate the errors that have plagued previous editions, the essay concludes with a plea for binational cooperation and an improvement in the material conditions for the new project.
