Abstract

The paper addresses the question of lives versus livelihood in an SIRD model augmented with a macroeconomic structure. The constraints on the availability of health facilities - both infrastructure and health workers determine the probability of receiving treatment which is found to be higher for the patients with severe infection than the patients with mild infection for the specific parametric configuration of the paper. Distinguishing between two types of direct intervention policy - hard lockdown and soft lockdown, the study derives alternative policy options available to the government. The study further indicates that the soft lockdown policy is optimal from a public policy perspective under the specific parametric configuration considered in this paper., Comment: 17 pages plus 22 figures and 6 tables

Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) metallic states induced by oxygen vacancies at oxide surfaces and interfaces provide new opportunities for the development of advanced applications, but the ability to control the behavior of these states is still limited. We used Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy combined with density functional theory to study the reactivity of states induced by the oxygen vacancies at the (001)-(1x4) surface of anatase TiO2, where both 2D metallic and deeper lying in-gap states (IGs) are observed. Remarkably, the two states exhibit very different evolution when the surface is exposed to molecular O2: while IGs are almost completely quenched, the metallic states are only weakly affected. The energy scale analysis for the vacancy migration and recombination resulting from the DFT calculations confirms indeed that only the IGs originate from and remain localized at the surface, whereas the metallic states originate from subsurface vacancies, whose migration and recombination at the surface is energetically less favorable rendering them therefore insensitive to oxygen dosing.

Abstract

The challenge of synthesizing graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with atomic precision is currently being pursued along a one-way road, based on the synthesis of adequate molecular precursors that react in predefined ways through self-assembly processes. The synthetic options for GNR generation would multiply by adding a new direction to this readily successful approach, especially if both of them can be combined. We show here how GNR synthesis can be guided by an adequately nanotemplated substrate instead of by the traditionally designed reactants. The structural atomic precision, unachievable to date through top-down methods, is preserved by the self-assembly process. This new strategy s proof-of-concept compares experiments using 4,4 -dibromo-para-terphenyl as molecular precursor on flat Au(111) and stepped Au(322) substrates. As opposed to the former, the periodic steps of the latter drive the selective synthesis of 6 atom-wide armchair GNRs, whose electronic properties have been further characterized in detail by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, angle resolved photoemission and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract

We present a study on the growth and characterization of high-quality single-layer MoS$_2$ with a single orientation, i.e. without the presence of mirror domains. This single orientation of the MoS$_2$ layer is established by means of x-ray photoelectron diffraction. The high quality is evidenced by combining scanning tunneling microscopy with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission experiments performed on the sample revealed complete spin-polarization of the valence band states near the K and -K points of the Brillouin zone. These findings open up the possibility to exploit the spin and valley degrees of freedom for encoding and processing information in devices that are based on epitaxially grown materials., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The prediction of adverse drug reactions (ADR) is an important step of drug discovery and design process. Different drug properties have been employed for ADR prediction but the prediction capability of drug properties and drug functions in integrated manner is yet to be explored. In the present work, a multi-label deep neural network and MLSMOTE based methodology has been proposed for ADR prediction. The proposed methodology has been applied on SMILES Strings data of drugs, 17 molecular descriptors data of drugs and drug functions data individually and in integrated manner for ADR prediction. The experimental results shows that the SMILES Strings + drug functions has outperformed other types of data with regards to ADR prediction capability.

Abstract

The delicate interplay of electronic charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom is in the heart of many novel phenomena across the transition metal oxide family. Here, by combining high- resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first principles calculations (with and without spin-orbit coupling), the electronic structure of the rutile binary iridate, IrO$_2$ is investigated. The detailed study of electronic bands measured on a high-quality single crystalline sample, and use of a wide range of photon energy provide a huge improvement over the previous studies. The excellent agreement between theory and experimental results shows that the single-particle DFT description of IrO$_2$ band structure is adequate, without the need of invoking any treatment of correlation effects. Although many observed features point to a 3D nature of the electronic structure, clear surface effects are revealed. The discussion of the orbital character of the relevant bands crossing the Fermi level sheds light on spin orbit coupling-driven phenomena in this material, unveiling a spin-orbit induced avoided crossing, a property likely to play key role in its large spin Hall effect.

Abstract

By combining bulk sensitive soft-X-ray angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and accurate first-principles calculations we explored the bulk electronic properties of WTe$_2$, a candidate type-II Weyl semimetal featuring a large non-saturating magnetoresistance. Despite the layered geometry suggesting a two-dimensional electronic structure, we find a three-dimensional electronic dispersion. We report an evident band dispersion in the reciprocal direction perpendicular to the layers, implying that electrons can also travel coherently when crossing from one layer to the other. The measured Fermi surface is characterized by two well-separated electron and hole pockets at either side of the $\Gamma$ point, differently from previous more surface sensitive ARPES experiments that additionally found a significant quasiparticle weight at the zone center. Moreover, we observe a significant sensitivity of the bulk electronic structure of WTe$_2$ around the Fermi level to electronic correlations and renormalizations due to self-energy effects, previously neglected in first-principles descriptions.

Abstract

The present study has been designed to establish the thermal profile of complete life cycle of the Antheraea assamensis (muga) silkworms starting from the eggs to the moth. The current study also concurrently addresses the applicability of infrared thermography (IRT) to detect muga larvae infected with pebrine. Because of its non-contact advantage, IRT imaging can be successfully manoeuvred to reduce the risk of spreading infections and ultimately lead to increased silk production. The images and data obtained by the non-invasive IRT technology can be implemented, analysed and translated into deep learning algorithm-based machine learning called 'smart data', which can be fine-tuned to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) and decision support system (DSS) for the management and monitoring of silkworms in their entire life progression. Abstract

Complete Photoemission Experiments, enabling to measure the full quantum set of the photoelectron final state, are in high demand for the study of materials and nanostructures whose properties are determined by strong electron and spin correlations. We report here on the implementation of the new spin polarimeter VESPA (Very Efficient Spin Polarization Analysis) at the APE-NFFA Beamline at Elettra that is based on the exchange coupling between the photoelectron spin and a ferromagnetic surface in a reflectometry setup. The system was designed to be integrated with a dedicated Scienta-Omicron DA30 electron energy analyzer allowing for two simultaneous reflectometry measurements, along perpendicular axes, that, after magnetization switching of the two targets allow to perform the 3D vectorial reconstruction of the spin polarization while operating the DA30 in high resolution mode. VESPA represents the very first installation for spin resolved ARPES (SPARPES) at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste, and is being heavily exploited by SPARPES users since fall 2015.
