Abstract

(Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 (x=0.60, 0.65, 0.68, 0.70, 0.75 and 0.80) mixed crystals have been synthesized by solid state reaction. In depth structural, thermal, transport and electronic properties are reported. Defect and disorder play a crucial role in structural and transport behaviour. Disorder induced iso-structural phase transition is observed at x=0.70, which is supported by the structural and transport properties data. Debye temperature has been estimated from the powder diffraction data. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data confirms the glass transition in the material. Low temperature resistivity data shows Variable range hopping mechanism whereas high temperature data follows activated behaviour. Activation energy is calculated from the semiconducting region of resistivity data. Both Hall measurement and temperature dependent thermopower data (S(T)) confirms that samples are p-type in nature. Density of state effective mass has been estimated from Pisarenko relation and corroborated with resistivity data. Thermal conductivity (k) is estimated using experimentally obtained data. Figure of Merit (ZT) of the synthesized samples are calculated using resistivity, S(T) and k. Structural and transport properties are correlated, confirms the transition from disorder to order state. Defect and disorder are corroborated with structural and Thermoelectric properties of the synthesized samples.

16. Enhanced magnetoelectric properties of BiFeO3 on formation of BiFeO3/SrFe12O19 nanocomposites.

Abstract

Nanocomposites (NCs) comprising (1-x) BiFeO3 (BFO) and x SrFe12O19 (SRF) (x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) have been prepared by a sol-gel route. Presence of pure phases of both BiFeO3 (BFO) and SrFe12O19 (SRF) in the NCs for x=0.3 and 0.4 has been confirmed by Rietveld analysis of XRD data though a minor impurity phase is observed in the case of x=0.1 and 0.2 NCs. Transmission electron micrographs of the NCs show that particles are mostly spherical with average size of 30 nm. M-H measurements at 300 and 10K indicate predominantly ferrimagnetic behavior of all the NCs with an increasing trend of saturation magnetization values with increasing content of SRF. Dielectric constant (εr) of the NCs at room temperature shows a dispersive behavior with frequency and attains a constant value at higher frequency. εr - T measurements reveal an increasing trend of dielectric constant of the NCs with increasing temperature and show an anomaly around the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of BFO, which indicates magnetoelectric coupling in the NCs. The variation of capacitance in the presence of magnetic field confirms the enhancement of magnetoelectric effect in the NCs. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy results indicate the presence of only Fe3+ ions in usual crystallographic sites of BFO and SRF. 26. Dentine microhardness changes following conventional and alternate irrigation regimens: An in vitro study.

Abstract

Aim: To compare the changes in microhardness of root dentin caused by two novel irrigation regimens with conventional irrigation. Materials and Methods: Forty extracted human permanent incisor teeth were selected. Decoronated roots were separated longitudinally to get 80 specimens that were embedded in autopolymerizing acrylic resin and grounded flat with silicon carbide abrasive papers. Of these, 60 root segments without any cracks or defects were selected and divided into four groups according to the irrigation regimen used (n = 15). Group I: 5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) + 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) (conventional). Group II: 6% Morinda Citrifolia Juice + 17% EDTA (MCJ). Group III: 5% NaOCl + Q Mix 2 in 1 (QMix). Group IV: Distilled water (control). Irrigation regimens were performed for 5 minutes. Dentin microhardness was measured with a Vickers indenter under a 200-g load and a 20-s dwell time at the midroot level of root dentin. The data were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison tests. Results: A significant difference was seen in the median values of the four groups. The control group showed the least reduction in microhardness when comparison with the other groups. Except for Group III (Q Mix), the other groups that were tested (MCJ and conventional regimens) showed statistically significant difference from the control group. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, it was concluded that NaOCl + Q Mix were least detrimental to root dentin microhardness when compared with MCJ and conventional irrigation regimens. 27. Comparative kayomorphology of edible Musacultivars of West Bengal

Abstract

Seedless cultivars of banana are generally triploids, and diploids or tetraploids are rarer. In the present study, the karyomorphology of eight edible Musacultivars of West Bengal was investigated for the first time to contribute to a better understanding of chromosome features and chromosome changes in the way of variation. Among the eight cultivars, seven were triploid and only the eighth seeded cultivar was diploid, all with basic chromosome number of x= 11. Karyotypic differences were observed between the cultivars but not enough to serve as a marker for each cultivar. Karyotype analysis has shown predominance of chromosomes with centromeres in median position with a few submedian centromeres. This report is the first of its kind for Musacultivars where comparative karyotyping indicate that minor structural alterations of the chromosomes may have resulted in the genetic variability within the cultivated bananas, giving rise to numerous varieties or cultivars.
