We present a description of an almost complete skeleton of the forest rhino (Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis) found near Gorzów Wielkopolski (Northwest Poland) in its geological and palaeoenvironmental context. While finds of bones and teeth are common, the importance of this find resides in, that it is the most complete specimen of this species, almost perfectly preserved in a well-studied and dated stratigraphic and sedimentological context, along with other fossil fauna and flora. The OSL dates of glaciofluvial sediments sandwiching skeleton-bearing horizons indicate a Middle Eemian age of the Pleistocene paleolake land. This warm climate is also indicated by the results of sedimentological, geochemical, paleobotanical, and isotopic analyses. The rhino skeleton was deposited in a shallow area near the lake’s littoral zone. Bite marks of a large predator (cave hyena) were recognized on the rhino’s pelvis, which, due to their location, were probably created post-mortem. With an estimated height of 1.82 m at the withers, this was a large adult Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis. The results of osteometric analyses indicate that we are dealing with one of the largest known individuals of this species. Although it suffered from a pathologically deformed spine, the individual died at a relatively old age.

The article presents the results of research on peats, muds and sands filling a palaeocavity within alluvial fans of the Bystrzyca River valley, in the Sudetic Foreland of SW Poland. In the 534-cm deep research profile in the central part of a palaeolake, 267 samples were collected at an interval of 2 cm and lithologically (structural and textural studies), palaeobotanically (studies of diatoms, pollen plant macrofossils and fossil wood), palaeozoologically (Cladocera, Mollusca and Ostracoda), geochemically (chemical elements and isotopes) and palaeomagnetically analyzed. The profile consists of three parts: organic with mineral layers (lower), mineral (middle), and organic (upper). The palynological diagram was divided into three zones that represent local sets of pollen zones. This diagram, although incomplete, is clearly indicative of the younger part of the Holsteinian (Mazovian: pollen III and IV periods interglacial). The upper part of the diagram consists of four local pollen zones that are correlated with stadial and interstadial periods. Analysis of several samples of fossil wood shows the widespread presence of Pinus remains and numerous fragments of rhytidome (bark) of Betula. Development of the peat layer (1.36–0.68 m depth) started with paludification of the forest with the Betula forest. Analysis of Cladocera shows the presence of chitin armor components (species: Chydorus sphaericus, Alona rectangula and ephippia of Alona rectangula) in three samples. Lithological, Cladocera and palaeo-magnetic research, supported by geochemical studies, indicate the existence of at least three main phases. The lake originated during the younger part of the Holsteinian (Mazovian) Intergalcial as an oxbow within the valley, where the deposition of variously thick (up to 1.5 m depth) peats, organic and minerogenic silts (the first stage). In the second phase, a closed, fairly deep late Holsteinian lake continued to exist under relatively warm conditions with mainly mineral deposition from the slope. The lake became shallower and wider, and then more open and better oxygenated (with through-flow). In the final phase the lake was completely filled by organic sediments under interglacial conditions. The absence of diatom, molluscan and ostracod communities indicates an acid lacustrine environment at this time. The fluvial and limnic deposits are sealed by overlaying Saalian (Odranian) till.

Polish and NW Ukrainian loess covers are situated along the northern margin of the central part of the European loess belt. Because of their intermediate geographic position, they form a bridge for loess studies in eastern and western Europe. Fifteen loess-soil sequences representing the last interglacial–glacial loess cycle were investigated using a new methodological approach elaborated for this purpose. The thickness of the Late Pleistocene sequences ranges between 4 and 14 m. All these profiles were sampled in vertical continuous sections at close intervals (5–10 cm) and documented with respect to their sedimentology, palaeopedology, and stratigraphy. The main litho- and pedostratigraphic units were established during field investigations. Loess–palaeosol sequences confirm the general instability of the Last Glacial climate. The representative, Late Pleistocene interfluve loess sequence in the study area consists of four units: two polygenetic palaeosol complexes and two calcareous loess units. Within these loess units, two generations of ice wedge casts indicate twofold expansion and disappearance of permafrost during the Last Glacial period. This evidence confirms the correlation of main terrestrial events of the Late Pleistocene loess sequences with the marine record. The Last Glacial loess sequences in Poland and NW Ukraine are of crucial importance for palaeogeographic reconstructions of European loess areas.

The profile of silty sediments in Tlumaczow was the subject of detailed lithological and malacological analyses. Abundant malacofauna represented by typical loess species were found in the sediments. The variability of the species composition and ecological structure of faunal assemblages provided the basis for the reconstruction of the sedimentary environment and characteristics of the climatic conditions that prevailed during the deposition of the sediments. The results of analyses indicate that the described sediments belong to the youngest loess series related to the Weichselian Upper Pleniglacial (MIS-2). The sequence of molluscan assemblages shows considerable similarities to the described faunas found in numerous loess profiles in southern Poland. It differs substantially from the malacological sequences recognized in loess profiles in Western and Southern Europe. This proves the significant and climate-determined diversification of malacocoenoses during the Weichselian Upper Pleniglacial (MIS-2) in Europe.
