Abstract

Results of a search for the three neutral charm decays, D0 -> mu e, D0 -> mu mu, and D0 -> e e, are presented. This study was based on data collected in Experiment 789 at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory using 800 GeV/c proton-Au and proton-Be interactions. No evidence is found for any of the decays. Upper limits on the branching ratios, at the 90% confidence level, are obtained., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures. Submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

Using the ARGUS detector at the $e^+e^−$ storage ring DORIS II at DESY, a search for penguin decays of B mesons involving b→s gluon has been performed. No evidence for the penguin mechanism was found and a number of upper limits are quoted.

Abstract

7 pp. (1990)., We report a measurement of the production of antideuterons d in $e^+e^−$ annihilation at centre-of-mass energies around 10 GeV using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. We observe an enhancement of d production in direct hadronic ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) resonance decays. From 21 events width a d candidate the inclusive cross section 1σdirhad · dσdp and the production rate of antideuterons are determined. A production rate of (6.0±2.0±0.6) × 10-5d per direct hadronic ϒ decay and a 90% CL upper limit of 1.7 × 10−5d per e+e−→qq continuum event are obtained. These results are related to antiproton production through a simple model.

Abstract

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed resonance which decays into D/sup asteriskplus-or-minus/(2010)..pi../sup - +/. The observed mass and width are 2420 +- 6 MeV/c/sup 2/ and 70 +- 21 MeV/c/sup 2/, respectively. The fragmentation function is found to be hard, as expected for a state containing a leading charm quark produced by nonresonant e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation.

Abstract

Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decaysD+→K−K0π+π+ andDs+→K−K0π+π+. The branching ratios were determined to be BR(D+→K−K0π+π+)=(1.0±0.5±0.3)% and BR(Ds+→K−K0π+π+)/BR(Ds+→φπ+)=1.2±0.2±0.2. These decays are found to proceed mostly via the " decay channel, with BR(D+→ ")=2.6±0.8±0.7)% and BR(Ds+→ ")/BR(Ds+→φπ+)=1.5±0.4±0.4.

Abstract

The reactionγγ→π+π−π+π− has been studied with the ARGUS detector. The rate in the invariant mass region below 1.8 GeV/c2 is found to be largely due toρ0ρ0 production. A spin-parity analysis shows a dominance of the partial wave (JP,Jz)=(2+, 2) with a small admixture fromJP=0+. The contribution of negative parity states is consistent with zero. The large ratio of cross sectionsσ(γγ→ρ0ρ0)/σ(γγ→ρ+ρ−)≃4, and the dominance of theJP=2+ wave in the reactionγγ→ρ0ρ0 is a signature consistent with the production of an exotic (I=2) resonance.

Abstract

Two-photon production of the exclusive final statesp "+nπ (n=0, 1, 2, and 3) has been investigated using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY. The reactionsγγ→p "π andγγ→p "π+π−π0 have been observed for the first time, as have theΔ++ and " baryons in the final statep "π+π−. No evidence was found forΔ++ " production. Topological cross sections for two-photon production ofp ",p "π0,p "π+π− andp "π+π−π0, as well as the crosssection forγγ→Δ++ "π+π−+c.c., have been measured. Upper limits are given for the cross section forγγ→Δ0 ",γγ→Δ++ " andγγ→Λ ".

Abstract

The production cross sections for the ?, S0, ?-, S0 (1385), ?0 (1530) and O- hyperons have been measured, both in the continuum and in direct ? decays. Baryon rates in direct ? decays are enhanced by a factor of 2.5 or more compared to the continuum. Such a large baryon enhancement cannot be explained by standard fragmentation models. The strangeness suppression for baryons and mesons turns out to be the same. A strong suppression of spin 3/2 states is observed.

Abstract

The production ofDS+ mesons inB meson decays, and inq " continuum events, has been studied with the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II. In addition to the measurement of inclusiveDS+ production in γ(4S)→B " decays, all eight two-body decay modesB→DS(*)D(*) have been measured with branching ratios between 1% and 3%. By comparing our inclusive and exclusive results to predictions of heavy quark effective theory, a value of (267±28) MeV × [2.7%/BR(Ds+→φπ+)]1/2 is obtained for the weak decay constant fDS(*), averaged overDS+ andDS*+ mesons.
