Abstract Objectives This study investigates curcumin's neuroprotective role and its potential in promoting neurogenesis in progenitor cells within the brain. Notably, curcumin's antioxidant properties have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease treatment. However, the association between curcumin's antioxidative effects and its impact on neural stem cells (NSCs) remains to be elucidated. Methods C17.2 neural stem cells were utilized as a model to simulate oxidative stress, induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We quantified the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), alongside the gene expression of SOD1 and SOD2, to assess intracellular oxidative stress. Additionally, Western blot analysis was conducted to measure the expressions of LC3‐II, Beclin‐1, and phosphorylated ERK (p‐ERK), thereby evaluating autophagy and ERK signaling pathway activation. Results Treatment with curcumin resulted in a reduction of MDA and ROS levels, suggesting a protective effect on NSCs against oxidative damage induced by H2O2. Furthermore, a decrease in the relative expressions of LC3‐II, Beclin‐1, and p‐ERK was observed post‐curcumin treatment. Conclusions The findings suggest that curcumin may confer protection against oxidative stress by attenuating autophagy and deactivating the ERK1/2 signaling pathways, which could contribute to therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease.

Objective The clinical management of patients with chronic limb‐threatening ischemia (CLTI) faces great challenges. Enhancing wound healing and limb preservation rates in this cohort is a critical objective. This study investigates the effectiveness of combining tibial cortex transverse transport (TTT) and endovascular therapy (EVT) for the treatment of patients with severe CLTI. We aim to evaluate the therapeutic results of this combined approach on the specified patient group. Methods We conducted a retrospective study to compare EVT with the combination of TTT and EVT in patients (Rutherford category 5 and above) with CLTI at Guangxi Medical University's First Affiliated Hospital from June 2017 to June 2023. This cohort was subjected to a follow‐up period ranging from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 12 months. The primary outcome measures included amputation‐free survival (AFS) (avoidance of above‐ankle amputation or death from any cause), overall mortality, limb salvage rates, wound healing efficiency, and the technical efficacy of the applied treatments. A variety of statistical analyses including chi‐square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and Pearson's and Spearman's correlation analyses. Results In this study, 131 patients with CLTI were included: 76 in the control group receiving only EVT treatment and 55 in the TTT + EVT group. The two groups were matched on demographic and clinical characteristics. In the TTT + EVT group, after more than 6 months of follow‐up, 85.5% of patients achieved AFS, and wound healing was observed in 54.5% (30 of 55 patients). After more than 12 months of follow‐up, 81.9% achieved AFS, with wound healing in 32 patients. Furthermore, after more than 24 months, 74.2% of patients remained amputation‐free, with wound healing in all surviving patients. In the control group, after more than 6 months of follow‐up, 72.4% of patients achieved AFS, and wound healing was observed in 51.3% (39 of 96 patients). After more than 12 months, 48.9% achieved AFS, with wound healing in 21 patients. Conclusion We found that combining therapy of TTT and EVT is safe and can be successfully administered in patients with CLTI and it enhances wound healing and AFS.

【Objective】In October 2023, skin ulceration, subcutaneous hemorrhage and enteritis appeared in a breeding base of Epinephelus coioides in Shenzhen, China. We clarified the causative organisms that triggered the sudden death of E. coioides and their biological characteristics, and screened the disinfectant that effectively inhibited the causative organisms, with an aim to provide theoretical guidance for the scientific prevention and control of E. coioides infected with Vibrio alginolyticus.【Method】The pathogen of V. alginolyticus was isolated from the diseased tissues of the dying E. coioides by streak plate method, the morphological characteristics, physiological and biochemical properties, phylogenetic tree, virulence genes and resistance genes as well as drug sensitivity of the pathogen were investigated, and regression infection tests were carried out.【Result】A dominant strain was isolated from the diseased tissues of E. coioides and named as strain SZGP226. The results of phylogenetic analysis showed that, the sequence of strain SZGP226 was homologous to V. alginolyticus HH101307, IB1 and Xmb015, with a similarity of 99.72%. The strain was identified as positive in physiological and biochemical indexes such as sucrose, mannitol, glucose, urea, oxidase activity and V-P, and it also carried five virulence genes, namely, tlh, toxR, ctsA, sto and vpi. The results of drug sensitivity showed that strain SZGP226 was resistant to 9 antibiotics like ampicillin and benzoxacillin, and carried 9 resistance genes including qnrB, floR, tetC, tetM, qnrD, gyrA, Sul1, SHV, and Oxa-24. The screening results of disinfectants showed that, sodium hydroxide had the best bactericidal effect, and its minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) was 8 mg/mL. The regression infection test showed that strain SZGP226 was strongly pathogenic to the E. coioides, with a LC50 of 1.63×107 CFU/mL, and it could cause obvious pathological damage to the liver, kidney and spleen of the E. coioides.【Conclusion】V. alginolyticus was the main pathogenic bacterium for the sudden death of the E. coioides, and its causative genes included tlh, toxR, ctsA, sto and vpi, and the LC50 was 1.63×107 CFU/mL. Sodium hydroxide (3 mg/mL) showing the best bactericidal effect on strain bactericidal effect could be selected to clean up the culture environment before aquaculture was carried out.

【Objective】In recent years, probiotics have been widely used in aquaculture, but the probiotics derived from Trachinotus ovatus been rarely reported. In the study, a strain was isolated from the intestine of Trachinotus ovatus and its biological characteristics were analyzed, which provided a theoretical basis its application in T. ovatus culture.【Method】The bacteria were isolated and identified through the sterile collection of intestinal contents from the healthy T. ovatus. And the morphological observation, gram staining, biochemical identification, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, drug sensitivity test, salt tolerance test, acid production ability, growth curve determination, and virulence gene identification of the typical bacterial colonies were performed.【Result】Based on the morphological characteristics, gram staining results biochemical characteristics, and 16S rRNA gene sequence alignment of the isolated bacterium, the results showed that it shared 100% similarities with Enterococcus faecalis, therefore, the isolated bacterium was identified as E. faecalis. The colony of the isolated strain was light grayish white, and Gram-positive. The biochemical indicators including esculin, cellobios, maltose, mannose and salicylic acid were tested positive. The results of the drug sensitivity test showed that the isolated bacterium exhibited varying degrees of resistance to drugs such as piperacillin, polymyxin B, penicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and oxacillin, exhibited intermediate sensitivity to ciprofloxacin, medemycin and ceftriaxone and sensitive to 11 drugs such as vancomycin, cefoperazone, ofloxacin and etc. The results of the salt tolerance test showed that the isolated strain could grow at 0%-8% NaCl concentrations, showing salt tolerance to some extent. The results of acid production capacity and growth curve measurements indicated that the pH of the culture media rapidly decreased and the acid production capacity was enhanced as the proliferation of the strain. The identification results of virulence genes showed that the isolated strains possessed four virulence genes including efaA, agg, as and fsrA.【Conclusion】A potential probiotic strain was successfully isolated from the intestine of T. ovatus and identified as E. faecalis. The isolated strain has good salt tolerance and acid production capability, and it contains functional genes associated with intestinal adhesion, which will provide a theoretical basis for further application of the strain.

【Objective】The causative agent was isolated from the diseased Micropterus salmoides tissue. The physiological properties of the pathogenic bacteria were identified, and their virulence genes and drug resistance genes were analyzed, with an aim to provide guidance for the scientific use of drugs in clinical practice.【Method】Samples were collected from pathologic tissues of diseased M. salmoides from a fish breeding factory in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, China. The bacteria were isolated by dilution coating method, the 16S rRNA sequence comparison and biochemical tests were performed to identify the species, and the virulence genes, drug resistance genes and drug sensitivity characteristics were also identified.【Result】Bacteria with round colony morphology, smooth milky white surface and opaque color were isolated from pathologic tissues of M. salmoides, and numbered as MSB-2, which was identified as Aeromonas in Gram-negative bacteria through phenotypic identification by Gram staining and physiological and biochemical reactions. By amplifying the 16S rRNA gene sequence and constructing a phylogenetic tree, the bacterium was further identified as A. veronii. The strain had virulence-related genes such as act, aer and aexT and resistance-related genes such as tetC, tetA and sull. The results of the drug sensitivity test showed that the bacterium was sensitive to carbenicillin, doxycycline, cefalexin, neomycin, gentamicin, cefradine, minocycline, cefazolin and etc. Artificial regression of healthy M. salmoides infected with A. veronii showing clinical signs similar to those of diseased fish, which were the same as those of the naturally occurring disease, such as congestion of the ventral and pectoral fin bases, redness and swelling of the anus, and obvious enlargement of the abdomen, etc. And a large amount of fluid in the abdominal cavity was found by autopsy.【Conclusion】The above results indicate that A. veronii is the pathogenic bacterium causing this disease of M. salmoides, and the approved fishery drugs such as neomycin and doxycycline can be used to control the disease during the breeding process.

【Objective】The study was conducted to investigate the causes of sudden death of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in a bass culture base in Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone, and reveal the biological characteristics of the Pathogen, with an aim to provide theoretical reference for disease prevention, treatment and prevention in breeding largemouth bass.【Method】A dominant bacterial strain, named SZNH-S20230817, was isolated from the liver, spleen, intestine and lesion tissues of the diseased largemouth bass, and the isolate was subsequently subjected to morphological characteristics observation, physiological and biochemical characteristics identification, artificial infection experiment, drug sensitivity test, MIC and MBC determination, 16S rRNA sequencing, identification of resistance genes and virulence genes to analyse its drug resistance and pathology.【Result】The results showed that the extended 16S rRNA sequence of SZNH-S20230817 had a 99.38% homology with Aeromonas caviae AP019195, and also carried four virulence genes, including aer, act, lip and fla. The results of physiological and biochemical identification showed that, indole, oxidase, phenylalanine, mannitol, xylose, arginine dihydrolysate and glucose acid production of the strain were positive, and the strain SZNH-S20230817 was identified as Aeromonas caviae. Regression infection revealed that the strain SZNH-S20230817 was highly pathogenic, with an LC50 of 1.39×107 CFU/mL for largemouth bass. The results of drug sensitivity tests showed that the bacterium was resistant to 12 antibiotics such as cefazolin, kanamycin, tetracycline and vancomycin, ampicillin, and clindamycin, and also carried 13 resistance genes such as qnrS, catI, emrB, Sul1, rmtB and etc. Histopathological analysis showed that infection with the strain SZNH-S20230817 could cause swelling and freeing of splenocytes, fracture and rupture of intestinal mucosa, shedding of villi, necrosis of renal cells, infiltration of inflammatory cells and vacuolisation of hepatic cells in the fish. The results of in vitro bacterial inhibition tests showed that the bacterium had low MIC and MBC against rheum officinale and gallnut, and the remaining seven herbs had weak inhibition against the bacterium.【Conclusion】Aeromonas caviae is the pathogen that causes the sudden death of largemouth bass, which carries four virulence genes of aer, act, lip and fla, and has an LC50 of 1.39×107 CFU/mL against largemouth bass. It is resistant to antibiotics such as cefazolin, kanamycin and tetracycline. Low dose of rheum officinale and gallnut can inhibit the growth of the bacterium effectively, with good preventive and inhibitory effects.

Abstract In single unit-cell FeSe grown on SrTiO3, the superconductivity transition temperature features a significant enhancement. Local phonon modes at the interface associated with electron-phonon coupling may play an important role in the interface-induced enhancement. However, such phonon modes have eluded direct experimental observations. The complicated atomic structure of the interface brings challenges to obtain the accurate structure-phonon relation knowledge. Here, we achieve direct characterizations of atomic structure and phonon modes at the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface with atomically resolved imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy in an electron microscope. We find several phonon modes highly localized (~1.3 nm) at the unique double layer Ti-O terminated interface, one of which (~ 83 meV) engages in strong interactions with the electrons in FeSe based on ab initio calculations. This finding of the localized interfacial phonon associated with strong electron-phonon coupling provides new insights into understanding the origin of superconductivity enhancement at the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface.

COVID-19 patients often suffer from post-COVID-19 acute sequelae (PASC). Pulmonary fibrosis has the most significant long-term impact on the respiratory health of patients, known as post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis (PC19-PF). PC19-PF can be caused by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or COVID-19-induced pneumonia. Individuals who experience COVID-19 pneumonia symptoms (including cough, shortness of breath, dyspnea on exertion, and desaturation) for at least 12 weeks after diagnosis, almost all develop PC19-PF. Extracellular matrix molecules: laminin (LN), type IV collagen (IV Col), procollagen III N-terminal peptide (PIIINP), and hyaluronic acid (HA) are involved in the development and progression of PC19-PF. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the progression of PC19-PF and serum levels of laminin, IV COL, PIIINP, and hyaluronic acid. This retrospective study included 162 PC19-PF patients treated and 160 healthy controls who received treatment at Shenzhen Longgang District Third People’s Hospital, Hebei PetroChina Central Hospital and Changzhi People’s Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023. Serum levels of LN, IV COL, PIIINP, and HA were detected by chemiluminescence immunoassay using commercial kits. Predicted forced vital capacity percentage (FVC% pred), predicted carbon monoxide lung diffusion capacity percentage (DLCO% pred), high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scores were assessed, and patient mortality was compared with healthy controls. Serum levels of LN, IV Col, PIIINP, and HA were significantly higher in PC19-PF or CTD-ILD patients than in healthy controls (all p < 0.05), and they were further elevated in acute exacerbation cases (all p < 0.01). In patients, HA was positively associated with HRCT scores and negatively associated with FVC% pred and DLCO% pred (all p < 0.05). Serum levels of LN, IV COL, PIIINP, and HA were significantly lower in surviving patients than in those who deceased (all p > 0.05). Serum levels of LN, IV C, PIIINP, and HA may affect the progression of PC19-PF and may serve as indicators of PC19-PF severity.

Abstract The recently discovered kagome superconductors offer a promising platform for investigating intertwined orders and novel states, including topology, superconductivity, charge density waves, and more. The interplay among these orders can spontaneously break rotational symmetry, giving rise to exotic phenomena such as nematicity or even nematic superconductivity. Here we present our findings on the two-fold symmetric superconductivity in thin-flake RbV3Sb5 in response to direction-dependent in-plane magnetic fields, in contrast to the inherent six-fold structural symmetry of the crystal lattice. The two-fold symmetry was evidenced through a combination of magnetoresistance transport experiments, critical magnetic field measurements, and observations of anisotropic superconducting gaps. Additionally, by altering the experimental configuration, we also detected the presence of six-fold symmetric components superimposed on the two-fold symmetry at the boundary between normal and superconducting states. Our results underscore the correlation-driven symmetry-breaking phenomena and emphasize the potential of this correlated kagome family as a promising platform for investigating intertwined orders, including unconventional superconductivity.

Abstract Edge supercurrent has attracted great interest recently due to its crucial role in achieving and manipulating topological superconducting states. Proximity-induced superconductivity has been realized in quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall edge states, as well as in higher-order topological hinge states. Non-Hermitian skin effect, the aggregation of non-Bloch eigenstates at open boundaries, promises an abnormal edge channel. Here we report the observation of broad edge supercurrent in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2-based Josephson junctions. The as-grown Cd3As2 nanoplates are electron-doped by intrinsic defects, which enhance the non-Hermitian perturbations. The superconducting quantum interference indicates edge supercurrent with a width of ~1.6 μm and a magnitude of ~1 μA at 10 mK. The wide and large edge supercurrent is inaccessible for a conventional edge system and suggests the presence of non-Hermitian skin effect. A supercurrent nonlocality is also observed. The interplay between band topology and non-Hermiticity is beneficial for exploiting exotic topological matter.

Abstract Controllable growth of two-dimensional (2D) single crystals on insulating substrates is the ultimate pursuit for realizing high-end applications in electronics and optoelectronics. However, for the most typical 2D insulator, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), the production of a single-crystal monolayer on insulating substrates remains challenging. Here, we propose a methodology to realize the facile production of inch-sized single-crystal hBN monolayers on various insulating substrates by an atomic-scale stamp-like technique. The single-crystal Cu foils grown with hBN films can stick tightly (within 0.35 nm) to the insulating substrate at sub-melting temperature of Cu and extrude the hBN grown on the metallic surface onto the insulating substrate. Single-crystal hBN films can then be obtained by removing the Cu foil similar to the stamp process, regardless of the type or crystallinity of the insulating substrates. Our work will likely promote the manufacturing process of fully single-crystal 2D material-based devices and their applications.

Abstract Intensification of short‐duration rainfall extremes contributes to increased urban flood risk. Yet, it remains unclear how upper‐tail rainfall statistics could change with regional warming. Here, we characterize the non‐stationarity of rainfall extremes over durations of 1–24 hr for the rapidly developing coastal megalopolis of the Greater Bay Area, China. Using high‐resolution, multi‐source, merged and gridded data we observe greater increases in rainfall intensities over the north‐central part of the region compared with the southern coastal region. Our results show, for the first time, that urbanization nonlinearly increases rainfall intensities at different durations and return periods. Over short durations (≤3‐hr) and short return periods (2‐yr), urban areas have the greatest scaling rates (≥19.9%/°C). However, over longer durations (≥9‐hr) rural areas have greater scaling rates, with a lower degree of dependency on both durations and return periods.

Recent studies have reported the growth of 2D non-centrosymmetric single crystals on substrates with surface steps, but the mechanisms are still unclear. Here, the authors demonstrate a method to grow unidirectionally aligned transition metal dichalcogenide grains on various types of substrates, showing the importance of the simultaneous formation of grain nuclei and substrate steps.

Quasiparticles, or broken Cooper pairs, are a major source of decoherence in superconducting qubits but their origin is debated. Pan et al. confirm the dominant mechanism due to photon absorption in the Josephson junction and demonstrate mitigation strategies based on tuning of the qubit geometry.

Energy spectroscopy is a powerful tool with diverse applications across various disciplines. Variational quantum-classical algorithms based on programmable digital quantum simulators have emerged as promising approaches for conducting spectroscopy on various models using a single device, despite facing significant quantum and classical resource overheads. Here, we experimentally demonstrate multilevel variational spectroscopy for fundamental many-body Hamiltonians using a superconducting digital quantum simulator. By exploiting symmetries and the subspace search method, we achieve full spectroscopy for a four-qubit Heisenberg spin chain, yielding an average energy deviation as small as 0.13 from the theoretical values, assuming unity coupling strength. Our method, when extended to eight-qubit Heisenberg and transverse-field Ising Hamiltonians, successfully determines the three lowest-energy levels. In achieving the above, we introduce a circuit-agnostic compilation method that enhances the robustness of our simulator against signal crosstalk. Our study highlights the combination of the subspace search method and symmetry-assisted resource efficiency in variational quantum algorithms and lays the foundation for practical spectroscopy on near-term quantum simulators, with potential applications in quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics.

The large-area growth of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) requires a precise control of metal and chalcogen precursors. Long-distance magnon transport is highly desired for magnonics. Here, the authors demonstrate a millimetre-long magnon decay length in multiferroic heterostructures, which is attributed to magnon-polarons induced by the magnetoelastic coupling.

In previous studies, natural killer lysin (NK-lysin) emerged as a crucial antimicrobial peptide (AMP) discharged by NK cells and CTLs. The sequence of NK-lysin was cloned and discovered in some fishes, but its function remains unclear. In our study, we obtained a copy of NK-lysin from the spleen of the healthy clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris; AoNK-lysin) through cloning and proceeded to investigate its potential functions and activities. The findings showed that the AoNK-lysin gene’s open reading frame (ORF) had a length of 465 base pairs (bp) and encoded 154 amino acids (aa), which included a saposin B domain and six cysteine residues that are highly conserved, forming three intrachain disulfide bonds to carry out antimicrobial activity. The AoNK-lysin gene was widely present in different tissues, with the skin showing the highest expression, followed by the eye, intestine, and muscle. Additionally, the expression of AoNK-lysin was significantly upregulated in the immune organs (spleen, gill, intestine, and head kidney) of A. ocellaris after being challenged by Singapore group iridovirus (SGIV). Furthermore, a 399 base pair cDNA sequence that encodes the fully developed peptide of AoNK-lysin was successfully inserted into a secretion plasmid called pPIC9K. Subsequently, a significant amount of the recombinant AoNK-lysin protein was efficiently manufactured using the Pichia pastoris expression system. The antibacterial test demonstrated that the AoNK-lysin protein significantly suppressed the growth of various pathogens, particularly Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus iniae, Salmonella typhi, Shigella sonnei, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Aeromonas caviae. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was found to be 7.81 μg/mL. Further analysis of antiviral assays showed all the viral mRNA of SGIV to be significantly reduced after AoNK-lysin protein stimuli in FHM cells. Collectively, these discoveries indicate that AoNK-lysin exhibits features of both direct pathogen-killing abilities and inhibited virus replication.

Abstract Quantum simulation can be implemented in pure digital or analog ways, each with their pros and cons. By taking advantage of the universality of a digital route and the efficiency of analog simulation, hybrid digital–analog approaches can enrich the possibilities for quantum simulation. We use a hybrid approach to experimentally perform a quantum simulation of phase-controlled dynamics resulting from a closed-contour interaction (CCI) within certain multi-level systems in superconducting quantum circuits. Due to symmetry constraints, such systems cannot host an inherent CCI. Nevertheless, by assembling analog modules corresponding to their natural evolutions and specially designed digital modules constructed from standard quantum logic gates, we can bypass such constraints and realize an effective CCI in these systems. Based on this realization, we demonstrate a variety of related and interesting phenomena, including phase-controlled chiral dynamics, separation of chiral enantiomers, and a mechanism to generate entangled states based on CCI.

Spinon excitations of a Kagome quantum spin liquid are expected to give rise to a magnetic continuum in Raman spectroscopy. Here, the authors report a magnetic Raman continuum in the Kagome spin liquid candidate Cu3Zn(OH)6FBr, in contrast to a sharp magnon Raman peak in the Kagome antiferromagnet EuCu3(OH)6Cl3.

While the role of PbTiO3 in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices has been widely studied, little attention is paid to possible polar topologies in SrTiO3. Here, the authors create atomic-scale vortex–antivortex pairs in the superlattices, expanding the understanding of topological structures.

Mapping local phonon dispersion in individual nanostructures reveals their thermal, optical, and mechanical properties but requires high detection sensitivity. Here, the authors present position-dependent phonon dispersion measurements in individual boron nitride nanotubes.

Abstract This article describes a new method of urban pluvial flood modeling by coupling the 1D storm water management model (SWMM) and the 2D flood inundation model (ECNU Flood-Urban). The SWMM modeling results (the overflow of the manholes) are used as the input boundary condition of the ECNU Flood-Urban model to simulate the rainfall–runoff processes in an urban environment. The analysis is applied to the central business district of East Nanjing Road in downtown Shanghai, considering 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, and 100-year return period rainfall scenarios. The results show that node overflow, water depth, and inundation area increase proportionately with the growing return periods. Water depths are mostly predicted to be shallow and surface flows generally occur in the urban road network due to its low-lying nature. The simulation result of the coupled model proves to be reliable and suggests that urban surface water flooding could be accurately simulated by using this methodology. Adaptation measures (upgrading of the urban drainage system) can then be targeted at specific locations with significant overflow and flooding.

Antiferromagnetic materials are potentially useful for spintronic applications. Here, the authors report high thermoelectric power value of 390 μV/K Seebeck coefficient in IrMn-based half magnetic tunnel junctions at room temperature.

We report the experimental observation of the spin-wave moiré edge and cavity modes using Brillouin light scattering spectromicroscopy in a nanostructured magnetic moiré lattice consisting of two twisted triangle antidot lattices based on an yttrium iron garnet thin film. Spin-wave moiré edge modes are detected at an optimal twist angle and with a selective excitation frequency. At a given twist angle, the magnetic field acts as an additional degree of freedom for tuning the chiral behavior of the magnon edge modes. Micromagnetic simulations indicate that the edge modes emerge within the original magnonic band gap and at the intersection between a mini flatband and a propagation magnon branch. Our theoretical estimate for the Berry curvature of the magnon-magnon coupling suggests a nontrivial topology for the chiral edge modes and confirms the key role played by the dipolar interaction. Our findings shed light on the topological nature of the magnon edge mode for emergent moiré magnonics.

Subaqueous dredging is a management activity undertaken globally to improve navigation, remove contaminants, mitigate flood risk and/or generate aggregate. Water Injection Dredging (WID) is a hydrodynamic technique involving the turbation and downstream displacement of fine sediments using vessel-mounted water jets. Despite the technique being widely applied internationally, the environmental and ecological effects of WID are poorly understood. For the first time, this study used a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) experimental design to assess the effects of WID on water physicochemistry, and macroinvertebrate and fish communities within a 5.7 km-long reach of tidal river. WID targeted the central channel (thalweg) to avoid disturbance of the channel margins and banks. Mean but not peak turbidity levels were substantially elevated, and dissolved oxygen levels were reduced during periods of WID, although effects were relatively short-lived (≈3 h on average). Dredging resulted in significant reductions in benthic macroinvertebrate community abundance (particularly taxa that burrow into fine sediments), taxonomic richness and diversity. In contrast, minor changes were detected in marginal macroinvertebrate communities within and downstream of the dredged reach following WID. Reductions in fish taxonomic richness and diversity were recorded downstream of the dredged reach most likely due to behavioural avoidance of the sediment plume. No visibly stressed or dead fish were sampled during dredging. Results suggest that mobile organisms and marginal communities were largely unaffected by thalweg WID and that the technique represents a more ecologically sensitive alternative to traditional channel margin mechanical dredging techniques.

Abstract Sea level rise (SLR) and subsidence are expected to increase the risk of flooding and reliance on flood defenses for cities built on deltas. Here, we combine reliability analysis with hydrodynamic modeling to quantify the effect of projected relative SLR on dike failures and flood hazards for Shanghai, one of the most exposed delta cities. We find that flood inundation is likely to occur in low‐lying and poorly protected periurban/rural areas of the city even under the present‐day sea level. However, without adaptation measures, the risk increases by a factor of 3–160 across the densely populated floodplain under projected SLR to 2100. Impacts of frequent flood events are predicted to be more affected by SLR than those with longer return periods. Our results imply that including reliability‐based dike failures in flood simulations enables more credible flood risk assessment for global delta cities where conventional methods have assumed either overtopping only or complete failure.

The photoemission properties of photocathodes affect the ultimate performance of electron accelerator based facilities and the cost. Several major properties of titanium nitride (TiN) irradiated by ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses were studied. Specifically, the quantum efficiency and intrinsic emittance were measured, and the response time was estimated indirectly. For photon energies higher than the work function, quantum efficiency values of 7×10^{−8}–5×10^{−6} were obtained. The measured intrinsic emittance was 0.54 μm/mm for the typical wavelength of 266 nm (4.66 eV). When the photon energy was lower than the work function, two-photon photoemission appeared, and the intrinsic emittance increased with the laser intensity. At photon energies of higher than and slightly lower than the work function, the intrinsic emittance ranged from 0.28 to 0.60 μm/mm and tended toward a minimum constant of 0.28 μm/mm if only single-photon photoemission was considered. The response time of TiN was proven to be close to that of gold by comparing the transverse expansion of electron beams under space charge force for the irradiated photon energy higher than the work function. The autocorrelation measurement of the photoemission of TiN and gold were performed, and a comparison of these results indicated that the two-photon photoemission of TiN excited by a photon energy slightly lower than the work function was prompt.

Background: A tibia shaft fracture is one of the most common long bone fractures, with two general types, open fracture and close fracture. However, there is no universally accepted guideline suggesting which treatment to use under certain circumstances. Therefore, a comprehensive network meta-analysis (NMA) is needed to summarize existing studies and to provide more credible data-based medical guidelines.Methods: Available literature was identified by searching medical databases with relevant key terms. Studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, baseline, intervention, and the outcome of treatments, were extracted. A comparative connection of these studies was demonstrated through net plots. Continuous variables and binary variables were reported as mean difference (MD) and odds ratio (OR) with a 95% credible interval (CrI), respectively. The comparison of direct and indirect outcome and their P-value were listed in the node-splitting table. Treatments for each endpoint were ranked by their surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) value. A heat plot was created to illustrate the contribution of raw data and the inconsistency between direct and indirect comparisons.Results: According to the search strategy, 697 publications were identified, and 25 records were included, involving 3,032 patients with tibia shaft fractures. Seven common surgical or non-surgical treatments, including reamed intramedullary nailing (RIN), un-reamed intramedullary nailing (UIN), minimally reamed intramedullary nailing (MIN), ender nailing (EN), external fixation (EF), plate, and cast, were compared, in terms of time to union, reoperation, non-union, malunion, infection and implant failure. Plate performed relatively better for time to union, while cast might be the best choice in close cases to reduce the risks of reoperation, non-union, malunion, and infection. To prevent implant failure, EN seemed to be better.Conclusion: Cast might have the highest probability of the most optimal choice for tibia shaft fracture in close cases, while reamed intramedullary nailing ranked second.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is a common disease in infants and young children. MPP can also be a potential cause of healthcare-associated pneumonia. However, it is challenging to make an accurate diagnosis in a timely fashion. Our goal is to determine the assay consistencies of acridinium ester chemiluminescence immunoassay (AECLIA) and gelatin particle agglutination (GPA) test for the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) antibody. In this study, a total of 1404 children with suspected MPP were enrolled. Among them, 130 were diagnosed as MPP positive by mycoplasma culture, and 186 were negative. MP antibodies were detected by AECLIA, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and GPA. Consistency rates, differences among assays, and diagnosis performance were compared for the three methods.
