1. The spatiotemporal effects on ecosystem services supply-demand from industrial transformation and upgrading: Promotion or inhibition?

Abstract

Traditional industrial development models have already caused an imbalance in ecosystem services supply and demand (ESSD). As a response strategy, industrial transformation and upgrading (ITU) are increasingly playing a vital role in regulating the relationship among ESSD. However, research on the interplay and impact of these two aspects remains insufficient. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the complex effects of ITU on ESSD is essential for industrial planning and environmental management. We developed a theoretical framework to interpret how ITU impacts ESSD, from the perspective of the natural-social-economic composite ecosystem. Using the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) as an example, we employed the Dynamic Spatial Durbin model (DSDM) to reveal the spatiotemporal effects of ITU on ESSD for four distinct types. The results indicated that from 2010 to 2021, the total supply of ecosystem services in the YREB exceeded the demand. The kernel density curves of ESSD ratios related to food production, carbon sequestration, water conservation, and soil conservation all show a trend of peak shifting to the bottom right over time. Additionally, pronounced spatial heterogeneity was observed in the ESSD ratios, with a notable clustering trend over time. Furthermore, the analysis of spatiotemporal effects decomposition revealed that ITU had a detrimental influence on the equilibrium between the supply and demand of food production, with this adverse effect intensifying and manifesting a stronger spatial spillover as time progressed. Positive effects were observed in the supply and demand for carbon sequestration and water conservation, both demonstrating significant spatial spillover effects. Steady negative spatiotemporal effects were noted for soil conservation supply and demand. Finally, we clarified the principal pathways through which ITU impacts ESSD. It offers policy recommendations for industrial development and ecosystem stewardship to mitigate the ESSD imbalance.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract

The problem of soil and water loss in the Yellow River Basin has been impacting the local high-quality development. The upgrading of industrial structure is a method to alleviate the issue of soil and water loss. In order to address the soil and water loss problem in the Yellow River Basin, this study investigates the internal mechanisms of how the upgrading of industrial structure impacts soil conservation, promoting coordinated development in the region. This research utilizes the entropy weight method, the InVEST model, and the fixed spatial Durbin model to explore how the greening, upgrading, and rationalization of industries affect the average soil conservation. The main conclusions of this study are: (1) For every 0.1 increase in the greening index, it effectively increases the local average soil conservation by 17.25 (t/hm2) and 49.61 (t/hm2). It is necessary to reduce the emission of pollutants in the upstream region in order to effectively improve the average soil conservation; (2) For every 0.1 decrease in the industry upgrading index, it will lead to a decrease in the average soil conservation in surrounding areas by 2.82 (t/hm2). Only by continuously increasing the financial investment in the upgrading of industries in the downstream region can the average soil conservation be increased. (3) An increase in the rationalization of industries in the upstream and midstream regions will lead to a decrease in the average soil conservation in surrounding areas, while in the downstream region, it will increase the local average soil conservation.

5. Exploring Alloy Design Pathway Through Directed Energy Deposition of Powder Mixtures: A Study of Stainless Steel 316L and Inconel 718

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a tool for rapid prototyping with complex geometry. However, the cyclic heating and cooling in laser melting processes often cause large columnar grains that dominate the as-printed microstructure, resulting in a strong texture and anisotropic properties that limit the application of AM. In this work, we apply powder-based directed energy deposition to discover new alloys using mixtures of Inconel 718 (IN718) and Stainless Steel 316L (SS316L). We discovered that the 77 wt.% IN718 alloy mixture, with the highest configurational entropy, demonstrated an intriguingly fine grain structure in the as-built condition and after homogenization at 1180°C. Residual stress from the laser melting process was identified as the primary cause of the observed grain refinement phenomenon. Although, a quantitative analysis of the changes in grain size after homogenization in the alloy mixtures of IN718 and SS316L requires further research. The discovery of this unique microstructural behavior shows how in-situ mixing of commercially available powders can be used to develop next-generation feedstock materials for AM and improve the understanding of fundamental process-microstructure-property relationships.

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

8. Effectiveness of Heilongjiang Nanwenghe Nature Reserve in Improving Habitat Quality in and around the Reserve

Abstract

Biodiversity loss is a critical challenge globally, and protected areas (PAs) has been established as an important policy tool for conservation. However, doubts exist regarding their effectiveness, and their policy effects and spatial spillover effects on surrounding areas are poorly understood. To address this, this study evaluated the effectiveness of Heilongjiang Nanwenghe National Nature Reserve (HNNNR) in China by using a combination of the InVEST model and the improved SDID model. The study covers a time span of approximately 31 years (1990–2020) and is divided into two periods (1990–1999 and 1999–2020), which allows for the assessment of the effects of nature reserves in the region. Our results showed that: (1) The establishment of HNNNR has improved the habitat quality in the reserve and Non-reserve area, with a greater impact on habitat quality in non-reserve areas than in the reserve; (2) The core zone within HNNNR showed the most significant improvement in habitat quality, while the buffer zone showed the least improvement; (3) The improvement of habitat quality in non-reserve area was mainly contributed by the policy spatial spillover effects, where the buffer zone has the strongest spillover benefits to the non-reserve, but the core zone has the weakest spillover effects to the non-reserve. Our results show the beneficial impact of a nature reserve for improving habitat quality in and around the reserve. This study provides a quantitative paradigm for assessing the conservation effectiveness of PAs across temporal and spatial scales.

Abstract

The rapid economic development (ED) of the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) has had a significant negative impact on regional ecosystem services (ES). Accurately understanding and properly handling the relationship between ES and ED is critical to achieving coordinated regional development of the YREB. Restricted by a minimal number of research units, traditional studies have not fully considered the spatial heterogeneity of the influencing factors, leading to results with poor accuracy and applicability. To address these problems, this paper introduces a spatial econometric model to explore the impact of influencing factors on the level of coordinated development in the YREB. For the 1013 counties in the YREB, we used the value equivalent method, the entropy weight method, and the coupling coordination model to quantify the coupling coordination relationship between the ecosystem services value (ESV) and ED from 2010 to 2020. The multi-scale geographically weighted regression model (MGWR) was adopted to analyze the role of influencing factors. The results showed the following: (1) The coupling coordination degree (CCD) of ESV and ED along the YREB demonstrated significant spatial heterogeneity, with Sichuan and Anhui provinces forming a low-value lag. The average CCD from high to low were found in the Triangle of Central China (TOCC), the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRDUA), and the Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomeration (CCUA). (2) There was spatial autocorrelation in the distribution of CCD, with high–high clustering mainly distributed in Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces. The counties with high–high clustering were expanding, mainly centering on Kunming City in Yunnan Province and expanding outward. (3) There was significant spatial heterogeneity in the impact of each influencing factor on CCD. Per capita fiscal expenditure was sensitive to low–low clustering areas of CCD; per capita, food production was a negative influence, and the rate of urbanization transitioned from negative to positive values from west to east.

Abstract

The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has increased year on year, and the increasing appreciation of the importance of gut microbiota provides novel therapeutic avenues for the treatment of NAFLD. To explore the similarities and differences between lactic acid bacteria (LAB) known to alleviate NAFLD, we selected three strains of Bifidobacterium adolescentis and three strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus to administer to C57BL/6J mice on a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet (HFHCD) for 23 weeks. Subsequently, the effects of the LAB were evaluated through various measures. The six LAB strains were found to have varying degrees of efficacy in the prevention of NAFLD. We found that there were interspecific and intraspecific differences in the beneficial effects, mainly with respect to energy metabolism, lipid metabolism and short-chain fatty acid concentration. Three strains of B. adolescentis and one strain of L. rhamnosus were found to relieve NAFLD by increasing the concentration of short-chain fatty acids in the intestine of NAFLD mice. The other two strains of L. rhamnosus, LGG and L10-1, relieved NAFLD through different ways, LGG modulated energy metabolism and lipid metabolism, and L10-1 reduced liver inflammation. Examination of gut microbiota indicated that the six LAB strains could block the HFHCD-induced elevation of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and alter the dominant species within the gut. These results suggest that B. adolescentis and L. rhamnosus can inhibit the development of NAFLD by regulating gut microbiota, and their use is thus a promising therapeutic strategy.

Abstract

Steel frames and composite wall panels are usually connected by welding. In this paper, a flexible bolt connection method is designed, and the cross section of the original composite wall panel is optimized to form a new envelope structure system. The new envelope structure is analyzed as a whole using the finite element software ABAQUS. In order to compare the performance of the welding and the flexible bolt connections, an experimental study is carried out to investigate the bearing capacity and displacement of single bolt and two bolts flexible bolt connection and the welded connection. The seismic bearing capacity, ductility and energy consumption capacity of of the different envelope structures are analysed. The results of the theoretical analysis and experimental verification indicate that the flexible bolt connection is superior to the rigid welded connection in terms of bearing capacity, ductility, energy consumption and impact on the stiffness of the main structure. It is believed that such findings are of great value for further application of steel frame structure in practice.

In this paper, SAP2000 FEM simulation software has been used to carry out modal analysis, response spectrum analysis, time-history analysis and other seismic performance researches on the structural layout scheme and optimal number of floors of certain proposed reinforced concrete frame teaching building respectively built in exterior-corridor type and middle-corridor type in order to compare the seismic performance of the structure under different working conditions. According to the analysis, the seismic performance of middle-corridor type architecture is obviously better than that of exterior-corridor type architecture along with the increase of seismic fortification intensity, while the increase of storey height within certain scope does not affect the seismic performance of these two types notably, thus providing the theoretical basis for engineering design.

Abstract

Abstract Background A variety of hematopoietic abnormalities are commonly seen in human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infected individuals despite antiviral therapy, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Nef plays an important role in HIV-1 induced T cell loss and disease progression, but it is not known whether Nef participates in other hematopoietic abnormalities associated with infection. Results In the current study we investigated the influence of HIV-1LAI Nef (LAI Nef) on the development of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) into myeloid-erythroid lineage cells, and found that nef expression in HSPCs blocked their differentiation both in vitro and in humanized mice reconstituted with nef-expressing HSPCs. Conclusions Our novel findings demonstrate LAI Nef compromised the development of myeloid-erythroid lineage cells, and therapeutics targeting Nef would be promising in correcting HIV-1 associated hematopoietic abnormalities.
