6. Characterizing the pedogenesis processes of some soils on metamorphic rocks from the sub-humid Mediterranean area in Algeria.

Abstract

The present work aims to characterize the processes of soil formation on shale metamorphic source rocks in a subhumid Mediterranean area in the north of Algeria (Algiers city). The study of the evolution of the horizon's total chemical composition of some elements (Si, Al, Fe, Ti, Ca, Mg, K, Na and Mn), allowed us to define rocks alteration mechanisms and redistribution of the alteration complex in two main profiles formed on metamorphic rocks. To do so, we conducted physical and chemical analyzes for both profiles. Then, the calculation of the Chemical weathering indices helped us to extract the alteration's balance. The results showed that silicium is the main chemical constituent of the studied soil profiles. The realized geochemical trends indicated enrichment of surface horizons by silicium and a decrease in iron and aluminium elements. Regarding the manganese, there is no clear pattern of distribution in the profiles. The concentrations of titanium, alkali and alkaline earth elements (Na2O, K2O, CaO and MgO) are irregular in the profiles and are generally lower than those of the parent materials. The weathering indices seem well suited to detect changes in the alteration intensity in the studied soils. The calculated chemical balances vary according to the targeted chemical elements. This model can be seen as a reduced and simplified version of the anaerobic digestion process. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the operating parameters of the system (the dilution rate D and the input concentrations of the two substrates s in 0 and s in 1) for the existence and stability of all equilibria. By means of operating diagrams, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the model with respect to the control parameters and we study the effect of the second input substrate.; Dans ce travail, on étudie un modèle décrivant une relation de syntrophie de deux es-pèces microbiennes avec deux substrats à l'entrée, incluant des termes de mortalité et l'inhibition de la première espèce par un excès du second substrat. Ce modèle est une version réduite et simplifiée du processus de la digestion anaérobie. On donne des conditions nécessaires et suffisantes sur les paramètres opératoires du système (le taux de dilution D et les concentrations à l'entrée des deux substrats s in 0 et s in 1) pour l'existence et la stabilité des équilibres. En utilisant les diagrammes opéra-toires, on décrit le comportement asymptotique du modèle en fonction des paramètres de contrôle et on étudie l'effet du second substrat à l'entrée.

Abstract

This research has for object to study the influence of clay addition, i.e., Maghnian bentonite, like deposit clay, in the physical properties of sandy materials from Mostaganem plateau (North-West Algeria) submitted to salinity and sodicity. The first result was to show that the clay content changes drastically the physical properties of clay-sand mixtures. Important differences were observed as a function of the sand particle size distribution. At given clay content, the saturated Hydraulic Conductivity (HCs) was lower when the sand size was small and spread. For the coarse sand the salinity was maintained, even for high clay contents, a significant hydraulic conductivity. One of the main characteristics of Maghnia clay is the presence of calcium carbonates in the natural material. In comparison to that of Mostaganem clay of other deposit, it appears less sensitive to sodicity. An important aspect is the initial state of the clay when used in addition to sands, i.e., disturbance, conditions of preparation of sand clay mixtures and presence of associated components such as carbonates. Maghnia clay appeared to be adapted to the improvement of sandy soils, not because its mineralogical characteristics, but for its natural cationic form and obviously the presence of calcite in it.

19. Le concept d’alcalinité résiduelle et évolution géochimique des processus. Application aux sols salés du lac Fetzara (Nord-Est algérien)

Abstract

Les résultats obtenus sur les sols du lac Fetzara montrent que l‟alcalinité résiduelle calcite (ARc) diminue lorsque les solutions se concentrent. Elle est légèrement négative au départ pour devenir plus franche par la suite dans les échantillons les plus concentrés. L'alcalinité est dominée par le Ca2+, c'est la voie saline neutre. Concernant l‟alcalinité résiduelle généralisée calcite+gypse (ARc+g), elle évolue également dans le même sens, puisqu‟elle diminue lorsque les solutions se concentrent. Mais contrairement à ARc, ARc+g est légèrement positive au départ, puis devient négative au fur et à mesure que la concentration de la solution augmente, c‟est également la voie saline neutre. L‟inversion du signe de ARc+g serait attribuée à des phénomènes d‟échange entre la solution et le complexe adsorbant du sol. L‟évolution vers le signe négatif de ARc et ARc+g peut être expliquée par la fixation du complexe argilo-humique du Na+, K+ et Mg2+ et libération de Ca2+. L‟étude sur l‟approche statistique établie à partir de l‟ACP afin de déterminer les principaux processus géochimiques responsables de l‟évolution de la salinité, montre que la concentration des solutions de sols sous l‟effet de l‟intense évaporation qui caractérise la région est le principal phénomène. Deux autres processus de moindre importance par rapport au premier, méritent d‟être confirmés dans ce milieu très souvent saturé d‟eau, il s‟agirait certainement des phénomènes d‟échanges ioniques entre la solution du sol et le complexe adsorbant et les processus d‟oxydo-réduction.Mots clés : Sols salés - Processus géochimiques - Alcalinité résiduelle - Calcite - Gypse - ACP.

Abstract

Wires used in fracture fixation or elective procedures can migrate within the body, and some lethal complications have been reported in the literature. We report a case of knee discomfort caused by a broken cerclage wire that has migrated from the hip region to the popliteal fossa after trochanteric osteotomy used in revision hip surgery. The authors point to the potential risks of broken orthopedic hardware.

Abstract

Worldwide prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is approximately 50%, with the highest being in developing countries. We compared cure rates and tolerability (SE) of second-line anti-H. pylori levofloxacin/amoxicillin (LA)-based triple regimens vs standard quadruple therapy (QT). An English language literature search was performed up to October 2010. A meta-analysis was performed including randomized clinical trials comparing 7- or 10-d LA with 7-d QT. In total, 10 articles and four abstracts were identified. Overall eradication rate in LA was 76.5% (95% CI: 64.4%-97.6%). When only 7-d regimens were included, cure rate was 70.6% (95% CI: 40.2%-99.1%), whereas for 10-d combinations, cure rate was significantly higher (88.7%; 95% CI: 56.1%-109.9%; P < 0.05). Main eradication rate for QT was 67.4% (95% CI: 49.7%-67.9%). The 7-d LA and QT showed comparable efficacy [odds ratio (OR): 1.09; 95% CI: 0.63-1.87], whereas the 10-d LA regimen was significantly more effective than QT (OR: 5.05; 95% CI: 2.74-9.31; P < 0.001; I(2) = 75%). No differences were reported in QT eradication rates among Asian and European studies, whereas LA regimens were more effective in European populations (78.3% vs 67.7%; P = 0.05). Incidence of SE was lower in LA therapy than QT (OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.18-0.85; P = 0.02). A higher rate of side effects was reported in Asian patients who received QT. Our findings support the use of 10-d LA as a simple second-line treatment for H. pylori eradication with an excellent eradication rate and tolerability. The optimal second-line alternative scheme might differ among countries depending on quinolone resistance.

37. Epigenetic regulation of Delta-Like1 controls Notch1 activation in gastric cancer

Abstract

The Notch signaling pathway drives proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, cell fate, and maintenance of stem cells in several tissues. Aberrant activation of Notch signaling has been described in several tumours and in gastric cancer (GC), activated Notch1 has been associated with de-differentiation of lineage-committed stomach cells into stem progenitors and GC progression. However, the specific role of the Notch1 ligand DLL1 in GC has not yet been elucidated. To assess the role of DLL1 in GC cancer, the expression of Notch1 and its ligands DLL1 and Jagged1, was analyzed in 8 gastric cancer cell lines (KATOIII, SNU601, SNU719, AGS, SNU16, MKN1, MKN45, TMK1). DLL1 expression was absent in KATOIII, SNU601, SNU719 and AGS. The lack of DLL1 expression in these cells was associated with promoter hypermethylation and 5-aza-2'dC caused up-regulation of DLL1. The increase in DLL1 expression was associated with activation of Notch1 signalling, with an increase in cleaved Notch1 intracellular domain (NICD) and Hes1, and down-regulation in Hath1. Concordantly, Notch1 signalling was activated with the overexpression of DLL1. Moreover, Notch1 signalling together with DLL1 methylation were evaluated in samples from 52 GC patients and 21 healthy control as well as in INS-GAS mice infected with H. pylori and randomly treated with eradication therapy. In GC patients, we found a correlation between DLL1 and Hes1 expression, while DLL1 methylation and Hath1 expression were associated with the diffuse and mixed type of gastric cancer. Finally, none of the samples from INS-GAS mice infected with H. pylori, a model of intestinal-type gastric tumorigenesis, showed promoter methylation of DLL1. This study shows that Notch1 activity in gastric cancer is controlled by the epigenetic silencing of the ligand DLL1, and that Notch1 inhibition is associated with the diffuse type of gastric cancer.

PurposeThe purpose of the study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of gamma-irradiated sterile cornea (GISC) for covering the tube in aqueous drainage device (ADD) surgery in a retrospective, multicenter case series.Patients and methodsParticipants included 297 patients (321 procedures) who had undergone ADD surgery for the first time using GISC patch at three clinic centers in the United States between April 2009 and July 2012. The medical records of those consecutive patients were reviewed. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative parameters about GISC were collected and analyzed. The main outcome measures were patch graft failure (PGF) and postoperative complications related to GISC.ResultsThree hundred and nineteen eyes in 295 patients were included in the current analysis. Ten out of the 319 eyes experienced PGF with a mean follow-up of 15.4±9.8 (SD) months. The overall cumulative PGF proportion from Kaplan–Meier analysis was 2.6% (95% CI: 0.6–4.7%) at 18 months. We detected two cases of presumed endophthalmitis related to PGF.ConclusionsGISC appears to have a reasonable success rate for preventing tube exposure related to PGF over an 18-month period. This success rate, in combination with other features of GISC (transparency and storage at room temperature), makes it a viable choice for patch graft material during ADD.

Abstract

The present study evaluated the effect of dietary protein levels on growth performance and blood parameters of juvenile marbled spinefoot (Siganus rivulatus). Five semipurified, isoenergetic (14.2 MJ digestible energy/kg; 84 g lipids/kg) diets were formulated to contain 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 g crude protein (CP)/100 g diet. Groups of 15 juvenile fish (7.4 g individual weight) were randomly assigned in triplicate to each of the five treatments and offered the test diets three times daily ad libitum for 9 weeks. Total erythrocyte and differential leukocyte counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin, blood glucose, protein, and serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were evaluated. Survival was greater than 95% in all treatments. Maximum growth was observed in fish offered the diet containing 40 g CP/100 g diet crude protein. Differences in dietary protein level had no effect on the hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic indices of the fish, but whole body composition was influenced by diet. Blood parameters showed no physiological or metabolic dysfunctions among fish offered any of the five diets. Findings of the present work strongly suggest that diets containing 40 g CP/100 g and 14.2 MJ digestible energy/kg are suitable for good growth of juvenile spinefoot rabbitfishSiganus rivulatusand do not affect hematological parameters. 48. "How to spot a psychopath". Lay theories of psychopathy.

Abstract

The present study examined lay recognition of psychopathy and beliefs about the behavioural manifestations, aetiology, and treatments of psychopathy. A community sample of 232 participants completed a questionnaire consisting of a vignette-identification task, a ratings task of 45 attitudinal items about psychopathy, and demographics. Analysis of the vignette-identification data showed that participants were significantly less likely to correctly identify a case of psychopathy than they were of either depression or schizophrenia. Factors derived from principal components analysis of the attitudinal items revealed that participants generally believed psychopaths to be intelligent and to have criminal tendencies, and that psychopathy was likely caused by early trauma and stress. Overall, participants may have had monological beliefs about the manifestations, aetiology, and treatments of psychopathy. These results suggest that educational programmes are required to improve mental health literacy in relation to psychopathy among the general public. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
