Environmental chemicals and pollutants are increasingly recognized for their potential transgenerational effects. Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), a widely used plasticizer substituting di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), was identified as an inducer of lipogenesis in male mice by our previous research. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ATBC exposure on the metabolic homeostasis of female mice and simultaneously evaluate its intergenerational effects.Female C57BL/6J mice were orally exposed to ATBC (0.01 or 1 μg/kg/day) for 10 weeks before mating with unexposed male mice. The resulting F1 female mice were bred with unexposed males to generate F2 offspring. Our results indicated that 10-week ATBC exposure disrupted glucose metabolism homeostasis and the reproductive system in F0 female mice. In F1 female mice, elevated liver lipid levels and mild insulin resistance were observed. In the F2 generation, maternal ATBC exposure resulted in increased weight gain, elevated liver triglycerides, and higher fasting blood glucose levels, primarily in F2 male mice. These findings suggest that maternal ATBC exposure may exert intergenerational disturbing effects on glucose metabolism across generations of mice. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the health risks associated with ATBC exposure.

Abstract Baicalein is a natural flavonoid abundant in various foods and dietary plants, including Tuber aestivum and Oroxylum indicum. In this study, we investigated the role of baicalein in enhancing the insulin‐sensitizing effect of metformin in mice with prediabetes. Baicalein, when combined with 25% of normal‐dose metformin, achieved a diabetes‐reversion rate of 80%, which was 1.86‐fold that of normal‐dose metformin. Mechanistically, baicalein enhanced the insulin‐sensitizing effect of metformin on lipid metabolism by inhibiting de novo lipogenesis through the AMP‐activated protein kinase/SREBP‐1c/FASN pathway and by inducing fatty‐acid β‐oxidation through the upregulation of ACSL1, CPT1A, EHHADH, and acyl‐CoA dehydrogenases (ACADL/ACADM/ACADS). Meanwhile, baicalein enhanced the insulin‐sensitizing effect of metformin via the modulation of the gut microenvironment by enriching probiotics, especially Akkermansia by 53.4‐fold, depleting opportunistic pathogens, and strengthening the intestinal barrier. The improved gut microenvironment led to the alleviation of chronic endotoxemia, as evidenced by decreased levels of lipopolysaccharide and proinflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, baicalein enhanced the effect of metformin on decreasing the circulating level of branched‐chain amino acids (BCAAs), which further improved insulin sensitivity by normalizing the mTORC1/p70S6K/IRS1 signaling pathway and de novo lipogenesis. Moreover, the role of baicalein in enhancing the insulin‐sensitizing effect of metformin was verified by an oleic acid‐induced steatosis model and a BCAA‐induced insulin resistance model in hepatocytes. Our study laid a theoretical foundation for developing baicalein into a dietary supplement for diabetes prevention. The diverse mechanisms of food‐derived flavonoids can be applied in the development of dietary supplements to enhance the efficacy of oral hyperglycemic agents currently used in clinics.

The thermal behavior of the cladding layer and the flow behavior of the molten pool significantly affect the geometry, temperature distribution and microstructure of the cladding track, thus affecting the mechanical properties of the cladding. Based on the interaction between the laser and powders, a calculation method of the cross-sectional area of the cladding track is proposed. The droplet energy method and the moving grid method are first combined to establish the surface growth model of the cladding track, to calculate the geometry of the cladding track. Then, the temperature field and flow field of the cladding track are studied. The driving forces of the molten pool flow including shear viscosity, gravity, buoyancy, surface tension at the gas-liquid boundary and pressure between liquids are considered to carry out the dynamics study of the molten pool. According to the force condition of the infinitesimal in the molten pool, the dynamic rules and boundary rules of the molten pool are established, so as to solve the flow field of the molten pool. In addition, the calculated geometry of the cladding track is compared with the experimental result to verify the accuracy of the model, and the microhardness of the cladding track is measured. The results show that the relative error between the simulation and the experiment is less than 6%, and the microhardness of the cladding layer is significantly improved. This work can provide a method for studying the morphology, temperature field, and flow field of laser cladding.

IntroductionThe enteric microbiome and its possible modulation to improve feed conversion or vaccine efficacy is gaining more attention in pigs. Weaning pigs from their dam, along with many routine procedures, is stressful. A better understanding of the impact of this process on the microbiome may be important for improving pig production. The objective of this study was to develop a weaner pig cannulation model, thus allowing ileum content collection from the same pig over time for 16S rRNA sequencing under different porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection statuses.MethodsA total of 15 3-week-old pigs underwent abdominal surgery and were fitted with an ileum cannula, with ileum contents collected over time. In this pilot study, treatment groups included a NEG-CONTROL group (no vaccination, no PRRSV challenge), a POS-CONTROL group (no vaccination, challenged with PRRSV), a VAC-PRRSV group (vaccinated, challenged with PRRSV), a VAC-PRO-PRRSV group (vaccinated, supplemented with a probiotic, challenged with PRRSV), and a VAC-ANTI-PRRSV group (vaccinated, administered an antibiotic, challenged with PRRSV). We assessed the microbiome over time and measured anti-PRRSV serum antibodies, PRRSV load in serum and nasal samples, and the severity of lung lesions.ResultsVaccination was protective against PRRSV challenge, irrespective of other treatments. All vaccinated pigs mounted an immune response to PRRSV within 1 week after vaccination. A discernible impact of treatment on the diversity, structure, and taxonomic abundance of the enteric microbiome among the groups was not observed. Instead, significant influences on the ileum microbiome were observed in relation to time and treatment.DiscussionThe cannulation model described in this pilot study has the potential to be useful in studying the impact of weaning, vaccination, disease challenge, and antimicrobial administration on the enteric microbiome and its impact on pig health and production. Remarkably, despite the cannulation procedures, all vaccinated pigs exhibited robust immune responses and remained protected against PRRSV challenge, as evidenced by the development of anti-PRRSV serum antibodies and viral shedding data.

Summary: Glioblastoma (GBM) is characterized by aggressive growth, invasiveness, and poor prognosis. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying GBM is crucial. This study explores the role of Sm-like protein 14 homolog A (LSM14A) in GBM. Bioinformatics and clinical tissue samples analysis demonstrated that overexpression of LSM14A in GBM correlates with poorer prognosis. CCK8, EdU, colony formation, and transwell assays revealed that LSM14A promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion in GBM in vitro. In vivo mouse xenograft models confirmed the results of the in vitro experiments. The mechanism of LSM14A modulating GBM cell proliferation was investigated using mass spectrometry, co-immunoprecipitation (coIP), protein half-life, and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation (MeRIP) analyses. The findings indicate that during the G1/S phase, LSM14A stabilizes DDX5 in the cytoplasm, regulating CDK4 and P21 levels. Furthermore, METTL1 modulates LSM14A expression via mRNA m7G methylation. Altogether, our work highlights the METTL1-LSM14A-DDX5 pathway as a potential therapeutic target in GBM.

Osteoporosis, a prevalent chronic health issue among the elderly, is a global bone metabolic disease. Flavonoids, natural active compounds widely present in vegetables, fruits, beans, and cereals, have been reported for their anti-osteoporotic properties. Onion is a commonly consumed vegetable rich in flavonoids with diverse pharmacological activities. In this study, the trabecular structure was enhanced and bone mineral density (BMD) exhibited a twofold increase following oral administration of onion flavonoid extract (OFE). The levels of estradiol (E2), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P) in serum were significantly increased in ovariectomized (OVX) rats, with effects equal to alendronate sodium (ALN). Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) levels in rat serum were reduced by 35.7% and 36.9%, respectively, compared to the OVX group. In addition, the effects of OFE on bone health were assessed using human osteoblast-like cells MG-63 and osteoclast precursor RAW 264.7 cells in vitro as well. Proliferation and mineralization of MG-63 cells were promoted by OFE treatment, along with increased ALP activity and mRNA expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL). Additionally, RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activity were inhibited by OFE treatment through decreased TRAP activity and down-regulation of mRNA expression-related enzymes in RAW 264.7 cells. Overall findings suggest that OFE holds promise as a natural functional component for alleviating osteoporosis.

Methylglyoxal-induced ROS elevation is the primary cause of neuronal damage. Metformin is a traditional hypoglycemic drug that has been reported to be beneficial to the nervous system. In this study, flavonoids were found to enhance the protective effect of metformin when added at a molar concentration of 0.5%. The structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis indicated that ortho- substitution in the B ring, and the absence of double bonds between the 2 and 3 position combined with the gallate substitution with R configuration at the 3 position in the C ring played crucial roles in the synergistic effects, which could be beneficial for designing a combination of the compounds. Additionally, the mechanism study revealed that a typical flavonoid, EGCG, enhanced ROS scavenging and anti-apoptotic ability via the BCL2/Bax/Cyto C/Caspase-3 pathway, and synergistically inhibited the expression of GSK-3β, BACE-1, and APP in PC-12 cells when used in combination with metformin. The dose of metformin used in the combination was only 1/4 of the conventional dose when used alone. These results suggested that ROS-mediated apoptosis and the pathways related to amyloid plaques (Aβ) formation can be the targets for the synergistic neuroprotective effects of flavonoids and metformin.

Abstract Background The use of creatinine-based glomerular filtration rate (GFR)-estimating equations to evaluate kidney function in elderly individuals does not appear to offer any performance advantages. We therefore aimed to develop an accurate GFR-estimating tool for this age group. Methods Adults aged ≥ 65 years who underwent GFR measurement by technetium-99 m-diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) renal dynamic imaging were included. Data were randomly split into a training set containing 80% of the participants and a test set containing the remaining 20% of the subjects. The Back propagation neural network (BPNN) approach was used to derive a novel GFR estimation tool; then we compared the performance of the BPNN tool with six creatinine-based equations (Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology Collaboration [CKD-EPI], European Kidney Function Consortium [EKFC], Berlin Initiative Study-1 [BIS1], Lund-Malmö Revised [LMR], Asian modified CKD-EPI, and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease [MDRD]) in the test cohort. Three equation performance criteria were considered: bias (difference between measured GFR and estimated GFR), precision (interquartile range [IQR] of the median difference), and accuracy P30 (percentage of GFR estimates that are within 30% of measured GFR). Results The study included 1,222 older adults. The mean age of both the training cohort (n = 978) and the test cohort (n = 244) was 72 ± 6 years, with 544 (55.6%) and 129 (52.9%) males, respectively. The median bias of BPNN was 2.06 ml/min/1.73 m2, which was smaller than that of LMR (4.59 ml/min/1.73 m2; p = 0.03), and higher than that of the Asian modified CKD-EPI (-1.43 ml/min/1.73 m2; p = 0.02). The median bias between BPNN and each of CKD-EPI (2.19 ml/min/1.73 m2; p = 0.31), EKFC (-1.41 ml/min/1.73 m2; p = 0.26), BIS1 (0.64 ml/min/1.73 m2; p = 0.99), and MDRD (1.11 ml/min/1.73 m2; p = 0.45) was not significant. The development of low-carbon economy has become the consensus of governments all over the world and has been vigorously advocated & promoted. This paper focuses on the top five global GDP nations in 2022: The United States, China, Japan, Germany, and Britain. A comprehensive evaluation index system of urban low-carbon economic development level is constructed from four dimensions: economic development level, environmental quality, energy consumption emission intensity and social development speed by using literature review and field interview. The evaluation measures are determined using the TOPSIS evaluation method with entropy weight and the grey relational model, providing a comprehensive assessment of the low-carbon economy's development level in these five countries." Judging from the comprehensive evaluation score, the overall development of low-carbon economy in American cities is in good condition and has reached the development standard of low-carbon economy; Germany and Japan rank second and third, and they are low-carbon economies. Britain ranks fourth in comprehensive evaluation, although it belongs to a low-carbon economy country, but there is still a certain gap with Germany and Japan; There is still a big gap between China and the other four countries. Based on the measurement and evaluation outcomes, it presents recommendations and strategies to foster the growth of low-carbon economies, offering valuable insights for the advancement of such economies across different nations. The research results guide countries all over the world to reduce carbon emissions in the process of economic development, protect the earth environment on which human beings depend, and make a better tomorrow for sustainable development.

AbstractThe present study investigated the current status of Chinese pre-service English language teachers’ Technological Language Learning and Teaching (TLLT) competence in a 16-week PjBL-based course. As well as receiving instruction, the participants completed four group projects relating to MOOC, micro-lectures, games, and social media. The pre-service English language teachers were required to finish a reflection journal after each group project and to complete the survey again at the end of the course. They reported that their TLLT competence, including technological knowledge (TK), technological content knowledge (TCK) and technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), significantly improved. Their reflection journals show they preferred social media and online shared document platforms to accomplish their group projects. Most technological tools and platforms that they applied in their projects were taught in the course. Besides, they believed this PjBL-based course could enhance their English language skills, including listening, reading, speaking, writing, grammar and translation skills. Regarding the implementation of technologies in teaching, the pre-service English language teachers mentioned various technological platforms and tools at different teaching stages. It is our expectation that this study could offer theoretical, methodological and pedagogical insights into pre-service language teachers’ professional development.

Cumin essential oil chitosan nanocapsules (CENPs) were prepared through the ionic gelation method by blending chitosan (CS) with cumin essential oil (CEO) in different proportions (1:0.8, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4). Subsequently, these nanocapsules were characterized and evaluated for their antibacterial properties to determine the optimal cumin essential oil encapsulation and antibacterial efficacy. The outcomes demonstrated that the highest encapsulation efficiency of CENPs was 52%, achieved with a 1:3 CS/CEO ratio. At this point, the nanoparticles had the smallest particle size (584.67 nm) and a regular spherical distribution in the emulsion. Moreover, the CENPs could release the encapsulated CEOs slowly, leading to efficient inhibition of E. coli and L. monocytogenes over a relatively extended period (24–36 h) compared to the CS and CEO. This research offers a promising approach for the use of nanocapsules in food preservation.

Laboratory methods for detecting specific pathogens in oral fluids are widely reported, but there is little research on the oral fluid sampling process itself. In this study, a fluorescent tracer (diluted red food coloring) was used to test the transfer of a target directly from pigs or indirectly from the environment to pen-based oral fluid samples. Pens of ~30, ~60, and ~125 14-week-old pigs (32 pens/size) on commercial swine farms received one of two treatments: (1) pig exposure, i.e., ~3.5 mL of tracer solution sprayed into the mouth of 10% of the pigs in the pen; (2) environmental exposure, i.e., 20 mL of tracer solution was poured on the floor in the center of the pen. Oral fluids collected one day prior to treatment (baseline fluorescence control) and immediately after treatment were tested for fluorescence. Data were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, with Youden’s J statistic used to set a threshold. Pretreatment oral fluid samples with fluorescence responses above the ROC threshold were removed from further analysis (7 of 96 samples). Based on the ROC analyses, oral fluid samples from 78 of 89 pens (87.6%), contained red food coloring, including 43 of 47 (91.5%) pens receiving pig exposure and 35 of 42 (83.3%) pens receiving environmental exposure. Thus, oral fluid samples contain both pig-derived and environmental targets. This methodology provides a safe and quantifiable method to evaluate oral fluid sampling vis-à-vis pen behavior, pen size, sampling protocol, and target distribution in the pen.

To comprehensively investigate the evolution of the stress field, a three-dimensional thermodynamic model of laser cladding was developed in this paper. By analyzing the physical process and constructing a mathematical model, the temperature transfer and stress distribution were calculated. The simulation examined the evolution and distribution of stress at various scanning speeds, discussing the interplay between the temperature field and the stress field during rapid heating and cooling. Residual stress was measured through X-ray diffraction in experiments, and the crack distribution within the cladding layer was observed. The findings indicated that the stress values calculated from the simulation model aligned well with the experimental results. By combining experimental data, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the distribution of residual stresses and the trends of crack initiation, leading to the proposal of an optimized processing scheme that significantly enhances the quality and reliability of the cladding layer.

Swine nursery mortality is one of the most important key performance indicators (KPIs) for commercial swine production systems and, for the purpose of this study, refers to the number of pigs that died during the first 60 days during the post-weaning phase (approximately 170-day period). Likewise, nursery mortality accounts for almost 50% of the mortality that occurs throughout the post-weaning phase. Despite being a metric concerning the post-weaning phase of production, previous studies have demonstrated that nursery mortality is highly correlated with the previous performance of the piglets in the pre-weaning phase and to stocking conditions at placement in nursery sites. However, there is no evidence of that predictive models are currently routinely utilized in the swine industry to predict the nursery performance of individual groups of pigs based on their previous performance in the pre-weaning phase. One obstacle to building such predictive models is that health and management data as well as production data for the pre and post-weaning phases are collected with separate record-keeping programs and stored in unconnected databases.Thus, the objective of this study was to measure and compare the performance of 5 forecasting models for predicting nursery mortality using a master table containing data collected from a single swine production system for 1,831 groups of pigs. An automated model was built to integrate information for 48 variables included in the master table that was previously disconnected within the production system. After the model and parameter tuning process, the model with the best overall prediction performance was the Support Vector Machine (SVM) in terms of Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE=0.3929), Mean Absolute Error (MAE=0.2956), and coefficient of determination (R2=0.7761). This study demonstrated the ability to use an integrated master table containing whole-herd information until the placement event of nursery groups to predict their downstream nursery mortality through the initial 60 days of the post-weaning phase.

Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are ubiquitous in living organisms and are promising drug targets for cancer, diabetes/obesity, and autoimmune disorders. In this study, a histone deacetylase inhibitor called suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) was added to a culture of marine fungi (Aspergillus sydowii DL1045) to identify potential drug candidates related to PTP inhibition. Then, the profile of the induced metabolites was characterized using an integrated metabolomics strategy. In total, 46% of the total SMs were regulated secondary metabolites (SMs), among which 20 newly biosynthesized metabolites (10% of the total SMs) were identified only in chemical epigenetic regulation (CER) broth. One was identified as a novel compound, and fourteen compounds were identified from Aspergillus sydowii first. SAHA derivatives were also biotransformed by A. sydowii DL1045, and five of these derivatives were identified. Based on the bioassay, some of the newly synthesized metabolites exhibited inhibitory effects on PTPs. The novel compound sydowimide A (A11) inhibited Src homology region 2 domain-containing phosphatase-1 (SHP1), T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP) and leukocyte common antigen (CD45), with IC50 values of 1.5, 2.4 and 18.83 μM, respectively. Diorcinol (A3) displayed the strongest inhibitory effect on SHP1, with an IC50 value of 0.96 μM. The structure–activity relationship analysis and docking studies of A3 analogs indicated that the substitution of the carboxyl group reduced the activity of A3. Research has demonstrated that CER positively impacts changes in the secondary metabolic patterns of A. sydowii DL1045. The compounds produced through this approach will provide valuable insights for the creation and advancement of novel drug candidates related to PTP inhibition.

Abstract Heterostructures formed by 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and graphene are not only fundamentally important for the exploration of novel interface physics but also indispensable for various optoelectronic devices. Often multiple effects such as charge transfer (CT), heating, and strain are present simultaneously and their interplay significantly impacts the properties of such heterostructures. However, the identification and separation of these three individual effects are challenging and have not been demonstrated in 2D heterostructures. Here, through a concurrent analysis of the Raman modes and photoluminescence spectra from graphene and WS2 in temperature‐ and power‐dependent measurements, this work has succeeded in disentangling the effects of light‐induced CT, heating, and strain effects in WS2/graphene heterostructure on SiO2/Si substrate. Without disentangling these effects, the light‐induced carrier density in graphene (WS2) would have been underestimated (overestimated) by up to 62% (73%) in this situation. More importantly, a positive temperature coefficient of the G‐mode Raman shift is obtained without excluding the strain and CT effects, contrary to the negative coefficient due to the intrinsic thermal effect. This study demonstrates the importance of disentangling the individual effects and the approach paves the way for a comprehensive understanding of electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of TMDC/graphene heterostrucutres.

Abstract Regulated cell death (RCD) is a ubiquitous process in living organisms that is essential for tissue homeostasis or to restore biological balance under stress. Over the decades, various forms of RCD have been reported and are increasingly being found to involve in human pathologies and clinical outcomes. We focus on five high-profile forms of RCD, including apoptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy-dependent cell death, necroptosis and ferroptosis. Cumulative evidence supports that not only they have different features and various pathways, but also there are extensive cross-talks between modes of cell death. As the understanding of RCD pathway in evolution, development, physiology and disease continues to improve. Here we review an updated classification of RCD on the discovery and features of processes. The prominent focus will be placed on key mechanisms of RCD and its critical role in neurodegenerative disease. Video abstract Graphical Abstract

ObjectivesThe Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations are based on creatinine alone (CKD-EPIcr), cystatin C alone (CKD-EPIcys) and combined creatinine and cystatin C (CKD-EPIcr-cys). It remains unclear whether these equations perform differently in older adults with type 2 diabetes than they do in non-diabetic older individuals.MethodsThis single-center cross-sectional study was performed in adults aged ≥ 65 years between January 2019 and December 2021. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured by technetium-99m-diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) renal dynamic imaging. The bias (difference between measured and estimated GFR), precision [interquartile range (IQR) of the median difference between measured GFR and estimated GFR] and accuracy P30 (percentage of estimated GFR within 30% of measured GFR) were considered the criteria of equation performance.ResultsFinally, 476 participants were enrolled, including 243 adults with type 2 diabetes and 233 non-diabetic adults. The mean age of the included participants was 71.69 ± 6.4 years and 262 (55%) were male. The mean measured GFR was 49.02 ± 22.45 ml/min/1.73 m2. The CKD-EPIcr-cys equation showed significantly greater bias and lower accuracy (P30) in individuals with diabetes than in the non-diabetic group (median bias, 4.08 vs. 0.41 ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively, p < 0.05; P30, 63.78% vs. 78.54%, respectively, p < 0.05). The precision IQR indicated that CKD-EPIcr-cys had also lower precision in individuals with diabetes than in the non-diabetic controls (17.27 vs. 15.49 ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively). Similar results were observed for CKD-EPIcr and CKD-EPIcys equations. The P30 of all three equations failed to reach 80% in diabetic and non-diabetic groups.ConclusionsThe performance of the CKD-EPI equations was lower in a group of patients aged ≥ 65 years with type 2 diabetes than in non-diabetic counterparts. However, each equation still had limitations regarding accuracy in older adults with or without diabetes.

The performance of five forecasting models was investigated for predicting nursery mortality using the master table built for 3242 groups of pigs (~13 million animals) and 42 variables, which concerned the pre-weaning phase of production and conditions at placement in growing sites. After training and testing each model’s performance through cross-validation, the model with the best overall prediction results was the Support Vector Machine model in terms of Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE = 0.406), Mean Absolute Error (MAE = 0.284), and Coefficient of Determination (R2 = 0.731). Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) path planning research refers to the UAV automatically planning an optimal path to the destination under the corresponding environment, while avoiding collision with obstacles in this process. In order to solve the problem of 3D path planning of UAV in a dynamic environment, a heuristic dynamic reward function is designed to guide the UAV. We propose the Environment Exploration Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (EE-TD3) algorithm, which combines the symmetrical 3D environment exploration coding mechanism on the basis of TD3 algorithm. The EE-TD3 algorithm model can effectively avoid collisions, improve the training efficiency, and achieve faster convergence speed. Finally, the performance of the EE-TD3 algorithm and other deep reinforcement learning algorithms was tested in the simulation environment. The results show that the EE-TD3 algorithm is better than other algorithms in solving the 3D path planning problem of UAV.

Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOP), which serves as a prebiotic, exhibits a variety of biological activities, including hypoglycemic activities. However, the effects of DOP on diabetes prevention and its hypoglycemic mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the effects of DOP treatment on the prediabetic mice model were studied and the mechanism was investigated. The results showed that 200 mg/kg/d of DOP reduced the relative risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from prediabetes by 63.7%. Meanwhile, DOP decreased the level of LPS and inhibited the expression of TLR4 by regulating the composition of the gut microbiota, consequently relieving the inflammation and alleviating insulin resistance. In addition, DOP increased the abundance of SCFA (short chain fatty acid)-producing bacteria in the intestine, increased the levels of intestinal SCFAs, promoted the expression of short-chain fatty acid receptors FFAR2/FFAR3, and increased the secretion of the intestinal hormones GLP-1 and PYY, which helped to repair islet damage, suppress appetite, and improve insulin resistance. Our results suggested that DOP is a promising functional food supplement for the prevention of T2DM.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Wild.) is a pseudo-grain that belongs to the amaranth family and has gained attention due to its exceptional nutritional properties. Compared to other grains, quinoa has a higher protein content, a more balanced amino acid profile, unique starch features, higher levels of dietary fiber, and a variety of phytochemicals. In this review, the physicochemical and functional properties of the major nutritional components in quinoa are summarized and compared to those of other grains. Our review also highlights the technological approaches used to improve the quality of quinoa-based products. The challenges of formulating quinoa into food products are addressed, and strategies for overcoming these challenges through technological innovation are discussed. This review also provides examples of common applications of quinoa seeds. Overall, the review underscores the potential benefits of incorporating quinoa into the diet and the importance of developing innovative approaches to enhance the nutritional quality and functionality of quinoa-based products.

BackgroundWith the rise of online health care service, there is growing discussion on the relationship between physicians and patients online, yet few researchers have paid attention to patients’ perception of social presence, especially its influence on their willingness to communicate (WTC). ObjectiveThe goal of the research is to investigate the influence of perceived social presence (PSP) on WTC in mobile medical consultations. MethodsParticipants living in Yunnan province during the period of middle to high risk of COVID-19 infection were recruited via the internet. They were assigned randomly into 2 groups interacting with a virtual physician presenting high and low levels of social presence and then asked to complete a questionnaire. Based on the theoretical framework, the study puts forward a model evaluating the relationships among participants’ PSP, communication apprehension (CA), self-perceived communication competence (SPCC), and willingness to communicate about health (WTCH) in the computer-mediated communication between virtual physicians and patients. ResultsIn total 206 (106 in group 1 and 100 in group 2) valid samples were gathered (from 276 log-ins) and 88.8% (183/206) of them were aged 18 to 44 years, which approximately resembles the age distribution of the main population engaging in online medical consultation in China. Independent t test shows that there is significant difference between the PSP of the 2 groups (P=.04), indicating a successful manipulation of social presence. The luminescent performances of near-infrared (NIR) lanthanide (Ln) complexes were restricted greatly by vibration quenching of X-H (X = C, N, O) oscillators, which are usually contained in ligands and solvents. Encapsulating Ln3+ into a cavity of coordination atoms is a feasible method of alleviating this quenching effect. In this work, a novel ytterbium complex [Yb(DPPDA)2](DIPEA) coordinated with 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid (DPPDA) was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, ESI-MS and elemental analysis. Under the excitation of 335 nm light, [Yb(DPPDA)2](DIPEA) showed two emission peaks at 975 and 1011 nm, respectively, which were assigned to the characteristic 2F5/2 → 2F7/2 transition of Yb3+. Meanwhile, this ytterbium complex exhibited a plausible absolute quantum yield of 0.46% and a luminescent lifetime of 105 μs in CD3OD solution. In particular, its intrinsic quantum yield was calculated to be 12.5%, and this considerably high value was attributed to the near-zero solvent molecules bound to Yb3+ and the absence of X-H oscillators in the first coordination sphere. Based on experimental results, we further proposed that the sensitized luminescence of [Yb(DPPDA)2](DIPEA) occurred via an internal redox mechanism instead of an energy transfer process.

Abstract Background Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal malignancies with high mortality. Circular RNAs (CircRNAs) have become a research hotspot in recent years for their vital roles in cancer development and progression. This study aims to clarify the roles of circNTRK2 and its underlying molecular mechanisms in ESCC. Methods The levels of circNTRK2, miR-140-3p, and nuclear receptor-interacting protein 1 (NRIP1) mRNA were examined by qRT-PCR. The cell proliferation ability was detected via CCK-8, EdU and colony formation assays. The invasion capacity was tested by using transwell assay. The apoptotic rate was evaluated through flow cytometry. The protein levels of cleaved PARP, cleaved caspase-3, E-cadherin, vimentin, and NRIP1 were measured by western blot assay. The validation of circular structure was performed by Sanger sequencing, divergent primer PCR, and RNase R treatments. The ceRNA regulatory mechanism of circNTRK2 was observed via dual-luciferase reporter, RIP and RNA pull-down assays. The mice xenograft models were constructed to confirm the oncogenicity of circNTRK2 in ESCC in vivo. Results CircNTRK2 was highly expressed in ESCC tissues and cells. High expression of circNTRK2 was correlated with advanced TNM stage, lymph node metastasis and short survival. Knockdown of circNTRK2 inhibited ESCC cell proliferation, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and accelerated apoptosis in vitro. Mechanistic assays disclosed that circNTRK2 could act as a sponge for miR-140-3p to abate its suppression on target NRIP1 expression. Moreover, miR-140-3p-induced inhibitory effects on ESCC cell malignant phenotypes were attenuated by the overexpression of circNTRK2. In addition, depletion of NRIP1 impeded cell proliferation, invasion and EMT, while enhanced apoptosis. Furthermore, silencing of circNTRK2 suppressed cell proliferation and invasion through regulating NRIP1 expression. Also, knockdown of circNTRK2 slowed ESCC tumor growth in vivo. Conclusion CircNTRK2 promoted ESCC progression by regulating miR-140-3p/NRIP1 pathway. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of circRNAs as miRNA sponges and highlight a promising therapy target in ESCC.

This paper investigates the path planning problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for completing a raid mission through ultra-low altitude flight in complex environments. The UAV needs to avoid radar detection areas, low-altitude static obstacles, and low-altitude dynamic obstacles during the flight process. Due to the uncertainty of low-altitude dynamic obstacle movement, this can slow down the convergence of existing algorithm models and also reduce the mission success rate of UAVs. In order to solve this problem, this paper designs a state detection method to encode the environmental state of the UAV’s direction of travel and compress the environmental state space. In considering the continuity of the state space and action space, the SD-TD3 algorithm is proposed in combination with the double-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm (TD3), which can accelerate the training convergence speed and improve the obstacle avoidance capability of the algorithm model. Further, to address the sparse reward problem of traditional reinforcement learning, a heuristic dynamic reward function is designed to give real-time rewards and guide the UAV to complete the task. The simulation results show that the training results of the SD-TD3 algorithm converge faster than the TD3 algorithm, and the actual results of the converged model are better.

Prorocentrum donghaiense, a marine dinoflagellate, causes harmful algal blooms (HABs) characterised by the highest outbreak frequency and most extensive coverage among similar species in the East China Sea. Highly efficient and ecofriendly biocontrol strategies should be developed for HAB control. Prodigiosin is an efficient biological algicide that demonstrated strong algicidal activity towards P. donghaiense. However, the mechanism of its toxicity to P. donghaiense is unknown. These factors were investigated to evaluate potential use of prodigiosin for control of P. donghaiense blooms. Photosynthetic electron transport rate, maximum quantum yield and respiration rate of P. donghaiense decreased significantly upon exposure to prodigiosin, indicating that prodigiosin rapidly exerted adverse effects on the chloroplasts and mitochondria. Furthermore, a significant increase in dichlorofluorescein fluorescence intensity indicated an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antioxidant system of P. donghaiense scavenged ROS; however, an increase in malondialdehyde concentrations indicated that excessive ROS were still able to initiate lipid peroxidation. Thus, ROS production resulted in the formation of lipids with a reduced degree of unsaturation. Lipid peroxidation decreased lipid fluidity and rigidified the membrane system, causing serious functional destruction of the membrane. Flow cytometry analysis indicated that prodigiosin arrested the cell cycle of P. donghaiense. However, surviving algal cells were able to repair the damaged functions and resume the cell cycle after prodigiosin was removed by photodegradation. Otherwise, P. donghaiense cells lost their membrane integrity and died. To begin an evaluation of ecological safety of prodigiosin, we tested four marine organisms at various trophic levels. The results of these tests indicated that Chlorella vulgaris, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Artemia salina and Lateolabrax japonicus were less sensitive to prodigiosin than P. donghaiense. Toxicity to all five organisms declined after prodigiosin was exposed to sunlight for 6 h. Considering the toxic doses of prodigiosin to various organisms and its photodegradation characteristics, we suggest that prodigiosin has potential in controlling P. donghaiense blooms but should be applied at night, in small doses, with multiple applications.

Methylglyoxal-induced oxidative stress and cytotoxicity are the main factors causing neuronal death-related, diabetically induced memory impairment. Antioxidant and anti-apoptotic therapy are potential intervention strategies. In this study, 25 flavonoids with different substructures were assayed for protecting PC-12 cells from methylglyoxal-induced damage. A structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis indicated that the absence of the double bond at C-2 and C-3, substitutions of the gallate group at the 3 position, the pyrogallol group at the B-ring, and the R configuration of the 3 position enhanced the protection of flavan-3-ols, and a hydroxyl substitution at the 4′ and meta-positions were important for the protection of flavonol. These SARs were further confirmed by molecular docking using the active site of the Keap1–Nrf2 complex as the receptor. The mechanistic study demonstrated that EGCG with the lowest EC50 protected the PC-12 cells from methylglyoxal-induced damage by reducing oxidative stress via the Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 and Bcl-2/Bax signaling pathways. These results suggested that flavan-3-ols might be a potential dietary supplement for protection against diabetic encephalopathy.

However, currently commercial lithium batteries usually use organic solutions containing various lithium salts as liquid electrolytes. In practical applications, liquid electrolytes have many shortcomings and shortcomings, such as poor chemical stability, flammability, and explosion. Therefore, the liquid electrolyte has a great safety hazard. The use of solid electrolyte ensures the safety of lithium-ion batteries, and has the advantages of high energy density, good cycle performance, long life, and wide electrochemical window, making the battery safer and more durable, with higher energy density and simple battery Structural design. Solid electrolytes mainly include inorganic solid electrolytes and organic polymer solid electrolytes. Although both inorganic solid electrolytes and polymer solid electrolytes have their own advantages, as far as the existing research work is concerned, whether it is an inorganic system or a polymer system, a single-system solid electrolyte can never achieve the full performance of an ideal solid electrolyte. The composite solid electrolyte composed of active or passive inorganic filler and polymer matrix is considered as a promising candidate electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries. Among many polymer systems, PEO-based is considered to be the most ideal polymer substrate. In this review article, we first introduced the structure, properties, and preparation methods of PEO-based polymer electrolytes. Furthermore, the researches related to the modification of PEO-based polymer solid electrolytes in recent years are summarized. The contribution of polymer structural modification and the introduction of additives to the ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability and mechanical properties of PEO-based solid electrolytes is described. Examples of different composite solid electrolyte design concepts were extensively discussed, such as inorganic inert nanoparticles/PEO, oxide/PEO, and sulfide/PEO. Finally, the future development direction of composite solid electrolytes was prospected.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been encouraged to penetrate deeper in the vehicle market for the green transportation system. One of the key issues to promote EV industry is to deploy Battery Swapping Stations (BSSs) that can satisfy the electricity demand of EV users. Since large scale data of vehicles such as GPS locations and electricity requests can be collected, the data-driven approach can be a cost-effective and useful method to select the locations of BSSs. In this paper, we propose a data-driven framework to solve the BSS location selection problem based on a large scale of GPS data of taxies in metropolitan area. The proposed solution consists of three main steps: Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based map matching and trajectory extraction, electricity consumption rate model based battery swapping demand estimation and clustering strategy based BSS location determination. Compared to the state-of-art deployment baseline, our proposed scheme is more easily to implement in reality and the mean distance error between the location that battery swapping demand is generated and the nearest BSS is reduced by 52.5% and 62.7%, which will definitely reduce the range anxiety of EV users and help improve the will of using EVs.

Unmanned helicopter (UH) is often utilized for raid missions because it can evade radar detection by flying at ultra-low altitudes. Path planning is the key technology to realizing the autonomous action of UH. On the one hand, the dynamically changing radar coverage area and the mountains in the low airspace environment will seriously affect the flight safety of UH. On the other hand, the huge state space of the three-dimensional (3D) environment will also make traditional algorithms difficult to converge. To address the above problems, a memory-enhanced dueling deep Q-network (ME-dueling DQN) algorithm was proposed. First, a comprehensive reward function was designed, which can guide the algorithm to converge quickly and effectively improve the sparse reward problem. Then, we introduced a dual memory pool structure and proposed a memory-enhanced mechanism, which can reduce invalid exploration, further improve the learning efficiency of the algorithm, and make the algorithm more stable. Finally, the path planning ability of the proposed algorithm in multiple experimental environments was verified. Experiments showed that the proposed algorithm has good environmental adaptability and can help UH to accurately identify dangerous areas and plan a safe and reliable flight path.

Disrupted iron homeostasis in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) is an important pathological mechanism in Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is unclear what role microglia play in iron metabolism and selective iron deposition in the SNpc of PD brain. In this study, we observed that 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) induced the expression of divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1) and iron influx in BV2 microglia cells, which might be associated with the upregulation of iron regulatory protein 1 (IRP1) expression. Moreover, we found that 6-OHDA had no significant effect on the expression of ferroportin 1 (FPN1) and iron efflux in BV2 microglial cells, which might be the combined action of IRP1 upregulation and reduced hepcidin levels. Furthermore, 6-OHDA treatment activated BV2 microglia and enhanced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Interestingly, iron overloading suppressed IRP1 expression, thus downregulating DMT1 and upregulating FPN1 levels in these microglial cells. On the contrary, iron deficiency activated IRP1, leading to increased expression of DMT1 and decreased expression of FPN1—which indicates that activated IRP1 induces iron overloading in 6-OHDA-treated microglia, but not iron overloading modulates the expression of IRP1. Taken together, our data suggest that 6-OHDA can regulate the expression of DMT1 and FPN1 by activating IRP1 and inhibiting hepcidin release, thus leading to abnormal iron sequestration in microglia. In addition, 6-OHDA can activate microglia, which leads to increased release of pro-inflammatory factors that can further induce genome damage in dopaminergic neurons.

In this work, we simply take advantage of the polarization effect to efficiently improve the hole injection from the p-type electron blocking layer (p-EBL) to the end of the active region for AlGaN based deep ultraviolet light emitting diodes (DUV LEDs). By properly increasing the AlN composition of AlGaN quantum barriers, a smaller positive polarized charge density at the last quantum barrier/p-EBL interface can be obtained, which correspondingly leads to the suppressed hole depletion and the reduced hole blocking effect in the p-EBL. Meanwhile, we properly increase the quantum well thickness so that the polarized electric field can even more accelerate the holes, and this will homogenize the hole distribution more across the MQWs. Therefore, the external quantum efficiency for DUV LEDs can be enhanced.

Mammalian mitochondrial inner membrane fusion is mediated by optic atrophy 1 (OPA1). Under physiological conditions, OPA1 undergoes proteolytic processing to form a membrane-anchored long isoform (L-OPA1) and a soluble short isoform (S-OPA1). A combination of L-OPA1 and S-OPA1 is essential for efficient membrane fusion; however, the relevant mechanism is not well understood. In this study, we investigate the cryo-electron microscopic structures of S-OPA1–coated liposomes in nucleotide-free and GTPγS-bound states. S-OPA1 exhibits a general dynamin-like structure and can assemble onto membranes in a helical array with a dimer building block. We reveal that hydrophobic residues in its extended membrane-binding domain are critical for its tubulation activity. The binding of GTPγS triggers a conformational change and results in a rearrangement of the helical lattice and tube expansion similar to that of S-Mgm1. These observations indicate that S-OPA1 adopts a dynamin-like power stroke membrane remodeling mechanism during mitochondrial inner membrane fusion.

Distributed optical fiber strain sensing significantly increases the number of sensing points compared with fiber Bragg grating sensor, which makes it an excellent candidate for shape sensing. Theoretical analysis indicates that the spatial resolution of strain measurement is crucial to the performance of shape sensing, so a shape sensor based on differential pulse-width-pair Brillouin optical time-domain analysis is proposed to improve the spatial resolution and shape sensing performance. The sensing fiber is attached on the both sides of a steel strip substrate, which enables the measurement of Brillouin frequency shifts (BFSs) of both the sides to suppress temperature crosstalk. In the experiment, first, the dependence of BFS variation on the curvature of the fiber is measured, the result of which agrees well with theory. Then the reconstruction of three shapes are demonstrated, the spatial resolution of which is 10 cm.

Abstract In recent years, Microcystis aeruginosa blooms have occurred throughout the world, causing huge economic losses and destroying aquatic ecosystems. It is necessary to develop effective and ecofriendly methods to control M. aeruginosa blooms. Here, we report a high algicidal activity of prodigiosin (PG) against M. aeruginosa as well as the algicidal mechanism. PG showed high algicidal activity against M. aeruginosa, with a 50% lethal dose (LD50) of 5.87 μg/mL in 72 h. A combination of methods, including propidium iodide and Annexin V-fluorescein staining assays and light and electron microscopy indicated the existence of two modes of cell death with features similar to those in eukaryotic programmed cell death: necrotic-like and apoptotic-like. Biochemical and physiological analyses showed that PG generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induce lipid peroxidation, damage the membrane system and destroy the function of the photosystem. A proteomics analysis revealed that many proteins were differentially expressed in response to PG stress and that most of these proteins were involved in important metabolic processes, which may trigger necrotic-like or apoptotic-like cell death. The present study sheds light on the multiple toxicity mechanisms of PG on M. aeruginosa and its potential for controlling the occurrence of M. aeruginosa blooms in lakes.

Recent revolution of cryo-electron microscopy has opened a new door to solve high-resolution structures of macromolecule complexes without crystallization while how to efficiently obtain homogenous macromolecule complex sample is therefore becoming a bottleneck. Here we report SmartBac, an easy and versatile system for constructing large-sized transfer plasmids used to generate recombinant baculoviruses that express large multiprotein complexes in insect cells. The SmartBac system integrates the univector plasmid-fusion system, Gibson assembly method and polyprotein strategy to construct the final transfer plasmid. The fluorescent proteins are designed co-expressed with the target to monitor transfection and expression efficiencies. A scheme of screening an optimal tagged subunit for efficient purification is provided. Six large multiprotein complexes including the human exocyst complex and dynactin complex were successfully expressed and purified, suggesting a great potential of SmartBac system for its wide application in the future. For full description of images’ semantic information, image retrieval tasks are increasingly using deep convolution features trained by neural networks. However, to form a compact feature representation, the obtained convolutional features must be further aggregated in image retrieval. The quality of aggregation affects retrieval performance. In order to obtain better image descriptors for image retrieval, we propose two modules in our method. The first module is named generalized regional maximum activation of convolutions (GR-MAC), which pays more attention to global information at multiple scales. The second module is called saliency joint weighting, which uses nonparametric saliency weighting and channel weighting to focus feature maps more on the salient region without discarding overall information. Finally, we fuse the two modules to obtain more representative image feature descriptors that not only consider the global information of the feature map but also highlight the salient region. We conducted experiments on multiple widely used retrieval data sets such as roxford5k to verify the effectiveness of our method. The experimental results prove that our method is more accurate than the state-of-the-art methods.

The emergence of the Metaverse, supported by innovative technologies, especially extended reality, has opened up new possibilities for various fields of education. Some disciplines like STEM have already derived significant benefits from the immersive, interactive, and authentic learning opportunities afforded by the Metaverse. In contrast, only very few changes have been seen in language education, such as pedagogical design, technical support, and psychological endorsement in the Metaverse. To predict the future pathways of language education, the present article aims to shed valuable light on the use of the Metaverse by discussing topics, such as definitions, features, examples, and existing models. Based on this discussion, a new educational framework for language education in the Metaverse is proposed, covering five dimensions--transdisciplinarity, pedagogy, technology, actor, and learning. It is hoped that the framework will be of value to different educational stakeholders and provide constructive learning environments and opportunities for future language teaching and learning.

This study examined the effects of involvement load-based tasks on vocabulary learning in a foreign language, as well as the extent to which task effects are predicted by learners' metacognition (i.e. metacognitive knowledge and regulation). A total of 120 Chinese university students of English as a foreign language (EFL) were randomly assigned to four task conditions: (1) reading; (2) reading + gap-fill; (3) reading + writing; and (4) reading + writing with the use of a digital dictionary. The Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was adapted to measure condition effects. The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory was used to examine learners' metacognitive knowledge and regulation. Results revealed that the group of learners who completed reading + writing tasks with the use of a digital dictionary demonstrated the best performance in acquiring receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge, followed by the reading + writing group, the reading + gap-fill group, and, finally, the reading only group. Multiple regression analysis supported the predictive effects of metacognitive regulation on task-based vocabulary learning. Structural equation modelling presented an overall profile of task-based vocabulary learning and metacognition. Based on the findings, we proposed a framework to understand the relationship between learners' metacognition, task type, and L2 vocabulary learning.

The randomness of phase compositions and their distribution as well as the micro cracks and pores in refractories result in the dependence of mechanical properties on the sample size. In this work, the size effects on fracture parameters including bending strength, elastic modulus and fracture toughness of high alumina bricks were investigated by testing samples of different sizes according to the national standard in China. The results showed that the smaller samples presented higher strength, while the larger samples possessed greater elastic modulus. Weibull modulus m of bending strength for high alumina bricks calculated for samples of two sizes, each group featured 32 samples, ranged from 11 to 12, which was higher than in other refractories such as low grade high alumina, magnesia-carbon and magnesia-chrome bricks. The scatter of the average strength and its standard deviation became stable when the sample number was more than 20. The fractal dimension of fracture surface for high alumina bricks was inversely and directly proportional to the sample size and the fracture toughness, respectively. The estimated fracture toughness of high alumina bricks was close to window glass and less than alumina and mullite.

Image retrieval based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) has attracted great attention among researchers because of the high performance. The pooling method has become a research hotpot in the task of image retrieval in recent years. In this paper, we propose the feature distribution entropy (FDE) to measure the difference of regional distribution information in the feature maps from CNNs. We propose a novel pooling method, which fuses our proposed FDE with region maximum activations of convolutions (R-MAC) features to improve the performance of image retrieval, as it takes the advantage of regional distribution information in the feature maps. Compared with the descriptors computed by R-MAC pooling, our proposed method considers not only the most significant feature values of each region in feature map, but also the distribution difference in different regions. We utilize the histogram of feature values to calculate regional distribution entropy and concatenate the regional distribution entropy into FDE, which is further normalized and fused with R-MAC feature vectors by weighted summation to generate the final feature descriptors. We have conducted experiments on public datasets and the results demonstrate that our proposed method could produce better retrieval performances than existing state-of-the-art algorithms. Further, higher performance could be achieved by performing these post-processing on the improved feature descriptors.

The present study investigated the current status of Chinese pre-service English language teachers' Technological Language Learning and Teaching (TLLT) competence in a 16-week PjBL-based course. As well as receiving instruction, the participants completed four group projects relating to MOOC, micro-lectures, games, and social media. The pre-service English language teachers were required to finish a reflection journal after each group project and to complete the survey again at the end of the course. They reported that their TLLT competence, including technological knowledge (TK), technological content knowledge (TCK) and technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), significantly improved. Their reflection journals show they preferred social media and online shared document platforms to accomplish their group projects. Most technological tools and platforms that they applied in their projects were taught in the course. Besides, they believed this PjBL-based course could enhance their English language skills, including listening, reading, speaking, writing, grammar and translation skills. Regarding the implementation of technologies in teaching, the pre-service English language teachers mentioned various technological platforms and tools at different teaching stages. It is our expectation that this study could offer theoretical, methodological and pedagogical insights into pre-service language teachers' professional development.
