14. Macroeconomic Determinants of External Debt in Selected SAARC Countries: A Panel Data Analysis

Abstract

External debt is burning problem in almost all economically developing or underdeveloped countries because of current account and budget deficits, low saving and investment growth and negative balance of payment. The external borrowing is increasing drastically in South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) that largely relies on external borrowing for their public finance. So, this study aims to explore the factors which enhances or lower the external debt in four countries in four SAARC nations (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Srilanka) for the period of 1984-2019. Results of study explored that budget deficit, negative balance of payments, devaluation of currency and more corruption are major factors to increase external debt in these countries and are significantly related to external debt. So, it is recommended that exports should be encouraged, and governments of these countries need to provide export subsidies and introduce export bonus voucher schemes. Government needs to follow the cannons of taxations and need to give rebate on heavy taxes on import of manufacturing machinery and to encourage FDI.

Abstract

Increase in social capital increases the social support in society, thus improves the health and well-being of an individual. This paper aims to analyze the role of social capital on subjective well-being (happiness, life satisfaction, and worth of life) and self-reported health status. The study deploys the Generalized Structural Equation Model with order logit to link social capital with health and subjective well-being (SWB) of people by utilizing the data of 1566 households and individuals in Punjab, Pakistan. Results of the study illustrate that social trust and the number of friends are strong predictors of self-reported health (SRH) status and subjective well-being of people. While memberships with organizations or alike is a weak predictor of SRH, it significantly affects the happiness of people. Our results also depict that SRH is the strong mediator between social capital and SWB; improved social networks lower the risk of poor health status, which improves the level of happiness and life satisfaction. The study suggests that a balanced distribution of different kinds of social networks is important for the self-reported health and subjective wellbeing of people in Pakistan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

25. Social Capital and Labour Productivity: A Case Study of District Lahore.

Abstract

Social capital of employers and employees in firms reduce the searching cost of the firm, increase trust among traders and hence increases productivity. This study is an effort to investigate the role of social capital on labor productivity in district Lahore using cross sectional data of manufacturing, trading and service firms. Data of 243 firms has been used to test the hypotheses, out of which 150 firms are included from manufacturing side, 43 from trading sector and 50 firms from service sector. Empirical results are clearly in the favor of social capital enhancement among employers and managers of different firms. Results of the study reveal that social capital of friends and traders and institutional relations are positively related to labor productivity but the results are heterogeneous among different sectors. Abstract

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of all thyroid carcinomas and accounts for up to 90% of all thyroid malignancies. It is the most indolent form of the disease and has an excellent prognosis. On the other hand, Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare entity accounting for only about 1% to 5% of all thyroid malignancies and only 2% of extranodal lymphomas. Synchronous PTC and PTL is a very rare condition and only a few cases have been reported in the literature up till now. We report one such case in a 52-year-old lady who was referred to us with goiter and progressively increasing difficulty in breathing.

Abstract

External auditory canal, like other epithelialized surfaces is predisposed to malignancies such as Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), melanomas and adenocarcinomas. In this background, malignancies like adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) are a rare occurrence and need to be thoroughly evaluated both locally and for distant extension. The malignancy needs to be addressed with an aggressive approach surgically with adequate marginal clearance. The role of radiation is debatable considering the outcomes in the limited data. Here we present the case of a 35-year-old female who came in with otalgia and otorrhea associated with a mass in the external auditory canal. After biopsy and imaging, a diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma was made and the patient was managed accordingly.

Abstract

Right recurrent laryngeal nerve can take a "Non-Recurrent" course and can present as a Non Recurrent Laryngeal nerve which is a rare entity. Such anomalies can lead to difficulty in locating the laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgeries and there are higher chances of it being injured. Therefore, surgeons should be mindful of this entity. We report the case of a 53-year-old lady who underwent thyroid surgery and a right Non Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve was identified intra-operatively.

Abstract

Laryngotracheal trauma is rare but can pose serious threats to one's life. Presenting symptoms vary according to the severity of injury. Immediate Airway control is first step in the management, intubation should be considered by a senior member of the trauma team if the injury is minor while tracheostomy should be reserved for more severe injuries. Evaluation by a fibre-optic laryngoscopy and CT scan should be done whenever possible. Reconstruction is done according to the site involved using suture, titanium miniplates and stents. Tissue engineering has added a new horizon in this management but up till now complete laryngotracheal regeneration is very far-fetched, but tissue regeneration at individual sites have shown some positive results. More work needs to be done in this less explored field including laryngeal transplantation.
