Abstract

The effect of nonequilibrium solute trapping by a growing solid under rapid solidification conditions is studied using a phase-field model. Considering a continuous steady-state concentration profile across the diffuse solid-liquid interface, a new definition of the nonequilibrium partition coefficient in the phase-field context is introduced. Abstract

The evolution of solidification microstructures in ternary metallic alloys is investigated by adaptive finite element simulations of a general multicomponent phase-field model. A morphological transition from dendritic to globular growth is found by varying the alloy composition at a fixed undercooling. The dependence of the growth velocity and of the impurity segregation in the solid phase on the composition is analyzed and indicates a smooth type of transition between the dendritic and globular growth structures., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Planar solidification from an undercooled melt has been considered using the phase-field model. The solute and the phase fields have been found in the limit of small impurity concentration. These solutions in the limit of vanishing velocity of the interface motion give the equilibrium partition coefficient and the liquidus slope. Asymptotic expansions for the solute and for the phase fields, and the relation between the diffusive speed and the parameters of the phase field model have been found at high growth velocity. 18. Phase-field simulations of solidification in binary and ternary systems using a finite element method

Abstract

We present adaptive finite element simulations of dendritic and eutectic solidification in binary and ternary alloys. The computations are based on a recently formulated phase-field model that is especially appropriate for modelling non-isothermal solidification in multicomponent multiphase systems. In this approach, a set of governing equations for the phase-field variables, for the concentrations of the alloy components and for the temperature has to be solved numerically, ensuring local entropy production and the conservation of mass and inner energy. To efficiently perform numerical simulations, we developed a numerical scheme to solve the governing equations using a finite element method on an adaptive non-uniform mesh with highest resolution in the regions of the phase boundaries. Simulation results of the solidification in ternary Ni$_{60}$Cu$_{40-x}$Cr$_{x}$ alloys are presented investigating the influence of the alloy composition on the growth morphology and on the growth velocity. A morphology diagram is obtained that shows a transition from a dendritic to a globular structure with increasing Cr concentrations. Furthermore, we comment on 2D and 3D simulations of binary eutectic phase transformations. Regular oscillatory growth structures are observed combined with a topological change of the matrix phase in 3D. Abstract

Carbon dots can be used for the fabrication of colloidal multi-purpose complexes for sensing and bio-visualization due to their easy and scalable synthesis, control of their spectral responses over a wide spectral range, and possibility of surface functionalization to meet the application task. Here, we developed a chemical protocol of colloidal complex formation via covalent bonding between carbon dots and plasmonic metal nanoparticles in order to influence and improve their fluorescence. We demonstrate how interactions between carbon dots and metal nanoparticles in the formed complexes, and thus their optical responses, depend on the type of bonds between particles, the architecture of the complexes, and the degree of overlapping of absorption and emission of carbon dots with the plasmon resonance of metals. For the most optimized architecture, emission enhancement reaching up to 5.4- and 4.9-fold for complexes with silver and gold nanoparticles has been achieved, respectively. Our study expands the toolkit of functional materials based on carbon dots for applications in photonics and biomedicine to photonics. © 2023 by the authors.

Abstract

Porous or hollow crystals have attracted considerable interest due to their unique properties and outstanding performance in various applications. In this study, hollow Pb1−xSrxF2 crystals have been successfully fabricated via controlled precipitation–dissolution at the liquid–gas interface. As a result of the reaction on the surface of a solution mixture of Pb(CH3COO)2 and Sr(CH3COO)2 under the action of gaseous HF, a film of Pb1−xSrxF2 crystals with a fluorite-type structure was formed. Placing the film on the water surface resulted in selective dissolution and formation of hollow crystals, associated with a relative increase in the overall Sr content in the Pb1−xSrxF2 solid solution. By adjusting the crystallization conditions and the dissolution time it was possible to obtain hollow crystals with a wall thickness of 20–40 nm, membrane films with ordered through holes, or microstructures with flower-like morphology. Abstract

Currently, lead halide perovskite nanostructures are an essential platform for designing new optical materials with required functionalities. Photoluminescence (PL) wavelength tuning is an important tool for targeted applications of optical materials in photonics and optoelectronics. Doping with lanthanides allows shifting the PL band into the near-infrared spectral region. Although post-synthetic doping is a versatile strategy that uses high-quality nanostructures with a given morphology, the approach is poorly developed for lanthanide-doped perovskites. Here, we propose anion-assisted cation doping in a nonpolar solvent at room temperature as a universal method to create multiple-band emitting lead halide perovskite nanostructures. Applying precursors MClx (M = Yb, Mn) to the pre-synthesized perovskite nanostructures, we have obtained near-infrared emitting Yb3+-doped CsPbClxBr3−x and FAPbClxBr3−x nanocrystals and nanoplatelets, as well as double-wavelength emitting Mn2+-doped, and triple-wavelength emitting Mn2+–Yb3+ co-doped CsPbClxBr3−x nanoplatelets. In all cases, doping is carried out due to simultaneous introduction of new cations and anions; the process dynamics depends on the type of doping ion, and the composition and morphology of the pristine perovskite nanomaterial. Abstract

Photovoltaic devices based on organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites have engaged tremendous attention due to the enormous increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, defect states formed at grain boundaries and interfaces hinder the achievement of PCE. A prospective strategy to both reduce interfacial defects and control perovskite growth is the passivation of interfaces. The passivation of the electron-transporting layer/perovskite interface with ultrasmall carbon dots (CDs) with suitable chemical composition and functional groups on their surface may simultaneously affect the morphology of a perovskite layer, facilitate charge carriers extraction, and suppress interfacial recombination. Here, we show that CDs synthesized from diamine precursors may be used as an interlayer at the SnO2/FACsPbI3 interface. Ultrasmall CDs form a smooth, thin layer, providing better perovskite layer morphology. CD interlayers result in an increased average perovskite grain size, suppress the formation of small grains, and improve charge carriers' extraction. As a result, photovoltaic devices with CD interlayers demonstrate a higher PCE due to the increased short-circuit current density and fill factor. Abstract

Characterization of the composition and extension of the SiO2/HfO2interface in the model systems Si-sub./SiO2(7.5 nm)/FE:HfO2(9.5 nm)/TiN (9 nm) for standard impurity concentrations and annealing temperatures (Si 3.6%, 1000 °C; Al 5.5%, 850 °C) were carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with high kinetic energies. In addition, the crystalline properties of HfO2were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction depending on the type of impurity. Formation of HfxSi1–xO2at the SiO2/HfO2interface was revealed, and the dependence of its thickness dsilicateand stoichiometry Xon the formation of the tetragonal phase P42/nmcof HfO2was established. It is shown that doping with aluminum followed by annealing prevents the formation of a tetragonal phase and reduces both dsilicateand Xby about 20% (with respect to undoped HfO2annealed at the same temperature), in contrast to doping with Si followed by annealing, which practically does not affect dsilicateand X. The results obtained are important for the problem of imbalance in the voltage drop across the gate oxides stack in a ferroelectric field-effect transistor and improvement of its endurance and retention characteristics.

Abstract

Lead halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPls) attract significant attention due to their exceptional and tunable optical properties. Doping is a versatile strategy for modifying and improving the optical properties of colloidal nanostructures. However, the protocols for B-site doping have been rarely reported for 2D perovskite NPls. In this work, we investigated the post-synthetic treatment of CsPbBr3 NPls with different Cd2+ sources. We show that the interplay between Cd2+ precursor, NPl concentrations, and ligands determines the kinetics of the doping process. Optimization of the treatment allows for the boosting of linear and nonlinear optical properties of CsPbBr3 NPls via doping or/and surface passivation. At a moderate doping level, both the photoluminescence quantum yield and two-photon absorption cross section increase dramatically. The developed protocols of post-synthetic treatment with Cd2+ facilitate further utilization of perovskite NPls in nonlinear optics, photonics, and lightning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Non-equilibrium phenomena such as the disappearance of solute drag, the origin of solute trapping and evolution of disorder trapping occur during fast transformations with originating metastable phases [D.M. Herlach, P.K. Galenko, D. Holland-Moritz, Metastable solids from undrercooled melts (Elsevier, Amsterdam, 2007)]. In the present work, a theoretical investigation of disorder trapping by a rapidly moving phase interface is presented. Using a model of fast phase transformations, a system of governing equations for the diffusion of atoms, and the evolution of both long-range order parameter and phase field variable is formulated. First numerical solutions are carried out for a congruently melting binary alloy system.
