Gravity measurements are increasingly used for high-precision and high-resolution Earth investigation. Recent times highlight the intention to combine both terrestrial and satellite data in order to reach higher accuracy for several purposes such as geological structures determination and geoid models construction.Here we present results of a comparison between a twenty-year (2002-2022) relative and absolute gravity data collected through the Microg LaCoste FG5#238 absolute gravimeter (AG), in the framework of repeated measurements in one station at about 1750 m above sea level and the satellite gravity data provided by CNES/GRGS RL05 Earth gravity field models, from GRACE and SLR data.The comparison allows to estimate the long-term correlation between the two dataset and a remarkably good fit was found in the long-term trend, revealing gravity changes most likely due to hydrological and volcanological effects.Our study shows how the combination of terrestrial and satellite data can be used to obtain a fuller and more accurate picture of the temporal characteristics of the studied processes. The combined use of these dataset results crucial especially in a harsh, unsteady and changing environment as well as the Etna volcano.

Monitoring the state of the sea is a fundamental task for economic activities in the coastal zone, such as transport, tourism and infrastructure design. In recent years, regular wave height monitoring for marine risk assessment and mitigation has become unavoidable as global warming impacts in more intense and frequent swells.In particular, the Mediterranean Sea has been considered as one of the most responsive regions to global warming, which may promote the intensification of hazardous natural phenomena as strong winds, heavy precipitation and high sea waves. Because of the high density population along the Mediterranean coastlines, heavy swells could have major socio-economic consequences. To reduce the impacts of such scenarios, the development of more advanced monitoring systems of the sea state becomes necessary.In the last decade, it has been demonstrated how seismometers can be used to measure sea conditions by exploiting the characteristics of a part of the seismic signal called microseism. Microseism is the continuous seismic signal recorded in the frequency band of 0.05 and 0.4 Hz that is likely generated by interactions of sea waves together and with seafloor or shorelines.In this work, in the framework of i-WaveNET INTERREG project, we performed a regression analysis to develop a model capable of predicting the sea state in the Sicily Channel (Italy) using microseism, acquired by onshore instruments installed in Sicily and Malta. Considering the complexity of the relationship between spatial sea wave height data and seismic data measured at individual stations, we used supervised machine learning (ML) techniques to develop the prediction model. As input data we used the hourly Root Mean Squared (RMS) amplitude of the seismic signal recorded by 14 broadband stations, along the three components, and in different frequency bands, during 2018 - 2021. These stations, belonging to the permanent seismic networks managed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology INGV and the Department of Geosciences of the University of Malta, consist of three-component broadband seismometers that record at a sampling frequency of 100 Hz.As for the target, the significant sea wave height data from Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) for the same period were used. Such data is the hindcast product of the Mediterranean Sea Waves forecasting system, with hourly temporal resolution and 1/24° spatial resolution. After a feature selection step, we compared three different kinds of ML algorithms for regression: K-Nearest-Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest (RF) and Light Gradient Boosting (LGB). The hyperparameters were tuned by using a grid-search algorithm, and the best models were selected by cross-validation. Different metrics, such as MAE, R2 and RMSE, were considered to evaluate the generalization capabilities of the models and special attention was paid to evaluate the predictive ability of the models for extreme wave height values.Results show model predictive capabilities good enough to develop a sea monitoring system to complement the systems currently in use.

In the framework of the NEWTON-g project, the field version of the Absolute Quantum Gravimeter produced by iXblue (AQG-B) was deployed in the summit crater zone of Mt. Etna volcano (Italy), in the summer of 2020. This is the first absolute atom interferometry gravimeter ever deployed on an active volcano. The device was installed in the facilities of the Pizzi Deneri volcanological observatory (PDN; 2800 m elevation, 2.5 km from the summit craters).Despite the unfavorable environmental conditions at the installation site and the occurrence of phases of high volcanic tremor, the AQG-B provided high-quality continuous data, suitable for studying volcano-related gravity changes. Indeed, it has been possible to track gravity changes with amplitudes ranging between a few tens and a few hundreds of nm/s2, occurring over a wide range of time scales.Here, we describe the main features of the AQG-B and the issues that were addressed to allow its deployment in the summit zone of an active volcano. We also present the months-long time series that were acquired in 2020 and 2021, with a special focus on the anomalies likely related to volcanic processes.

We present the preliminary results of combined discrete and continuous gravity measurements, carried out at Vulcano Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily, southern Italy), in the period October 2021 - January 2022. The gravity observations have been aimed at investigating the dynamics of the volcanic-hydrothermal system, during an interval when significant changes in chemical properties, temperatures and emission rates of La Fossa crater fumaroles were observed.Campaigns of gravity measurements were carried out at Vulcano on an annual basis, between 1982 and 2014. The gravity network initially included 11 benchmarks and grew through time. For the period considered here, the discrete gravity measurements were repeated twice (October and November 2021) on a network consisting of 19 benchmarks. The network is linked to an external reference station, situated in Milazzo (Sicily north coast), that has been a site of absolute measurement since 1990. In order to obtain information on the time scales of the volcanic and hydrothermal processes able to induce bulk mass changes, three stations for continuous gravity measurements were installed in October 2021.Comparison between campaign data collected in 2014 and in October 2021 reveals a gravity decrease affecting the whole volcano, with a maximum amplitude of about -100 microGal in the area of La Fossa. No significant gravity changes were observed between October and November 2021. On the other hand, continuous gravity observations showed high frequency variations affecting only one of the three stations, thus indicating that they are due to fast-evolving and local processes, occurring within shallow sources. Transient signals also appear in the time series from the three stations during Very Long Period (VLP) events.Our findings indicate that the combined use of discrete and continuous gravity measurements is a promising tool for studying the volcano-hydrothermal system of Vulcano and mitigating potential hazards.

The NEWTON-g project [1] proposes a paradigm shift in terrain gravimetry to overcome the limitations imposed by currently available instrumentation. The project targets the development of an innovative gravity imager and the field-test of the new instrumentation through the deployment at Mount Etna volcano (Italy). The gravity imager consists in an array of MEMS-based relative gravimeters anchored on an Absolute Quantum Gravimeter [2].The Absolute Quantum Gravimeter (AQG) is an industry-grade gravimeter measuring g with laser-cooled atoms [3]. Within the NEWTON-g project, an enhanced version of the AQG (AQGB03) has been developed, which is able to produce high-quality data against strong volcanic tremor at the installation site.After reviewing the key principles of the AQG, we present the deployment of the AQGB03 at the Pizzi Deneri (PDN) Volcanological Observatory (North flank of Mt. Etna; 2800 m elevation; 2.5 km from the summit active craters), which was completed in summer 2020. We then show the demonstrated measurement performances of the AQG, in terms of sensitivity and stability. In particular, we report on a reproducible sensitivity to gravity at a level of 1 μGal, even during intense volcanic activity.We also discuss how the time series acquired by AQGB03 at PDN compares with measurements from superconducting gravimeters already installed at Mount Etna. In particular, the significant correlation with gravity data collected at sites 5 to 9 km away from PDN proves that effects due to bulk mass sources, likely related to volcanic processes, are predominant over possible local and/or instrumental artifacts.This work demonstrates the feasibility to operate a free-falling quantum gravimeter in the field, both as a transportable turn-key device and as a drift-free monitoring device, able to provide high-quality continuous measurements under harsh environmental conditions. The field of rotational seismology has only recently emerged. Portable 3 component rotational sensors are commercially available since a few years which opens the pathway for a first use in volcano-seismology. The combination of rotational and translational components of the wavefield allows identifying and filtering for specific seismic wave types, estimating the back azimuth of an earthquake, and calculating local seismic phase velocities.Our work focuses on back-azimuth calculations of volcano-tectonic and long-period events detected at Etna volcano in Italy. Therefore, a continuous full seismic wavefield of 30 days was recorded by a BlueSeis-3A, the first portable rotational sensor, and a broadband Trillium Compact seismometer located next to each other at Mount Etna in August and September of 2019. In this study, we applied two methods for back-azimuth calculations. The first one is based on the similarity of the vertical rotation rate to the horizontal acceleration and the second one uses a polarization analysis from the two horizontal components of the rotation rate. The estimated back-azimuths for volcano-tectonic events were compared to theoretical back-azimuths based on the INGV event catalog and the long-period event back-azimuths were analyzed for their dominant directions. We discuss the quality of our back azimuths with respect to event locations and evaluate the sensitivity and benefits of the rotational sensor focusing on volcano-seismic events on Etna regarding the signal to noise ratios, locations, distances, and magnitudes.

Since September 2014, iGrav#016 superconducting gravimeter (SG; by GWR) has recorded continuously at the Serra La Nave Astrophysical Observatory (SLN; 1730 m elevation; ~6.5 km from the Etna’s summit craters; Italy).Here we present results of a comparison between a six-year (2015-2020) time series from iGrav#16 and absolute gravity data collected through the Microg LaCoste FG5#238 absolute gravimeter (AG), in the framework of repeated measurements that were performed at the same installation site of the SG. Both AG and SG records have been corrected for the local tides, local atmospheric pressure and for the polar motion effect.The comparison allows to estimate the long-term drift of the SG, defined as the total SG trend minus the observed trend in AG measurements, which is of the order of 9 microGal/year. Once the drift effect is removed, there is a remarkably good fit between the two data sets. The differences between absolute gravity changes and corresponding relative data in the continuous time series from the SG are within 1-2 microGal (the total error on AG measurements at this station is typically +/- 3 microGal).After being corrected for the effect of instrumental drift, the time series from the SG reveals gravity changes that are due to hydrological and volcanological effects.Our study shows how the combination of repeated AG measurements and continuous gravity observations through SGs can be used to obtain a fuller and more accurate picture of the temporal characteristics of the studied processes.

This is deliverable 3.3– On-field infrastructures – of the H2020 FET-Open project NEWTON-g (GA No 801221). The work described here was carried out in the framework of WP3(On-field application).D3.3provides a detailed description of the field infrastructures that were developed to allow efficient functioning of the devices composing the gravity imager, during the deployment on the summit of Mt. Etna.

Rotational seismology is an emerging field of seismology with rotational sensors such as blueSeis-3A as portable devices. We deployed one of these rotational sensors on Etna volcano from August to September 2019 in the middle of a 26 stations broadband seismic array and a fibre-optic cable deployed for Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). We, therefore, recorded continuously the full seismic wavefield using a 6C station (rotational sensor co-located with a broadband seismometer) for 30 days.We will present an overview of our work on the rotational data in combination with a broadband seismometer. We will (i) compare the translational with rotational data and show how they complement each other, (ii) calculate back azimuths using only a 6C station or using merely the horizontal components of the rotational sensor, (iii) determine Love and Rayleigh wave velocities from the rotation rate and (iv) perform a simple inversion for the shallow velocity structure below the station, and finally (v) discuss the usefulness of such a sensor in a volcanic environment and (vi) highlight what new it would bring to volcano-related research.

Gravimetry is the only method able to directly track redistributions of bulk masses. Hence, it can supply unique information on geophysical processes that involve subsurface fluids like water, hydrocarbons, and magma. Nevertheless, the high cost of currently available gravimeters and the difficulty to use them in field conditions, has limited the applicability of the gravity method, that is indeed not as widely adopted as other geophysical methods.A new system for gravity measurements is being developed in the framework of the H2020 NEWTON-g project. This system, called “gravity imager”, includes an array of MEMS gravimeters, anchored to an absolute quantum device. It will enable, for the first time, gravity measurements at high spatio-temporal resolution. After the phases of design and production of the new devices, NEWTON-g involves a 2-year phase of field tests at Mt. Etna volcano (Italy), starting in the summer of 2020.

In the framework of EUROVOLCs Trans-national grants, we propose the FAME project aiming at validating Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology as a complementary and alternative tool for monitoring volcanic and seismic activity at Etna volcano. DAS technology provides records of strain signals with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.We deployed a fibre optic cable connected to an iDAS (Silixa) interrogator set-up at the Observatory Pizzi Deneri in the summit area. To allow for a continuously recording of the iDAS, a solar panel power system was designed using battery back-up and inverter to supply 200 W at 220 V/AC. An internet connection was set up for a full remote control capability. The iDAS interrogated a 1.5 km long fibre cable, buried at a depth of about 30 cm by digging a trench in Piano delle Concazze area. The DAS measurements were validated with conventional measurements from 26 broadband seismometers and 3 arrays of 3 infrasound sensors from the Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP). We deployed instruments along the fibre optic cable, covering an area of about 0.1 km2. The DAS and conventional sensors acquired data from 4 July to 23 September 2019 without major interruptions.Here, we show key features of this the extraordinary multidisciplinary dataset. Thanks to the high spatial resolution (2 m), we could find locations of hypothesized faults in Piano delle Concazze area. Thanks to the long acquisition period, we continuously tracked Etna activity, marked by several eruptive episodes, including ash emissions, strombolian and effusive activities from the summit craters. The most intense and sustained eruptive events occurred in 18-20 July, 27-28 July and 9-13 September. We investigate the application of well-established analysis techniques in volcano-seismology to DAS dataset in order to assess the performance of the system in detecting and characterizing volcanic events.Our findings demonstrate that DAS technology can record on a long term basis volcanic activity, which suggests DAS technology can be integrated to volcanic monitoring systems.

Continuous gravity measurements at active volcanoes are mostly accomplished using spring gravimeters, that can be operated under harsh field conditions. Unfortunately, these instruments do not provide reliable continuous measurements over long time-scales, due to the instrumental drift and artifacts driven by ambient parameters.An alternative to spring devices for continuous measurements is given by superconducting gravimeters (SGs), that are free from instrumental effects and thus allow to track even small gravity changes over time-scales from minutes to years. Nevertheless, SGs cannot be deployed in close proximity to the active structures of tall volcanoes, since they need host facilities with main electricity and a large installation surface.The mini-array of three SGs that were installed on Etna between 2014 and 2016 makes the first network of SGs ever installed on an active volcano. Here we present results from these instruments and show that, even though they are installed at relatively unfavorable positions (in terms of distances from the summit active craters), SGs can detect volcano-related gravity changes that would otherwise remain hidden, thus providing unique insight into the bulk processes driving volcanic activity.

We present the use of distributed acoustic sensing of telecommunication fibre to perform seismic monitoring on the lower eastern flank of Etna volcano. Eastern flank of Etna is structurally characterized by the existence of many faults until under the sea. One of the clearest morphological feature is the Timpe Fault System (TFS) crossing highly populated urban areas. The TFS is formed by several main segments producing shallow seismicity with a dominant normal faulting style and a right-lateral component, related to WNW-ESE regional extension. This area is highly seismogenic, with occurrence of a very frequent seismic activity punctuated by destructive earthquakes with magnitude ranges 4.3≤ML≤5.1 and a mean recurrence time of about 20 years.To monitor the seismic response of this area we deployed an “intelligent” Distributed Acoustic Sensing (iDAS) system (SILIXA) in order to interrogate a 12-km-long telecommunication fibre-optic cable, managed by TELECOM Italia internet provider. The telecom cable runs from Linera to Zafferana villages along two primary directions roughly N-S and E-W and crosses the Santa Venerina and the Fiandaca faults, both part of the TFS. The former was entirely hidden until the 2002 eruption when a ML 4.4 earthquake exposed the fault at the surface and heavily damaged Santa Venerina village. The latter has been reactivated during the 2018 Etna activity, when a ML4.8 earthquake strongly damaged the Fleri village.The iDAS was in acquisition for three months (11 September - 9 December 2019) and recorded the strain rate from natural and anthropogenic sources at a sampling frequency of 1 kHz with 2-m spatial resolution and a gauge length of 10 m. A second fibre in the same cable, was interrogated simultaneously by a FEBUS A1 system (FEBUS OPTICS) from 2 to 9 December 2019 with a spatial resolution and a gauge length of 5 m at a sampling frequency of 200 Hz. To validate the DAS measurements, gathered by both systems, two broadband seismometers (Trillium Compact 120 s) were deployed in the vicinity of the cable. We located using hammer shots along the cable at key positions.During the acquisition period more than 800 local seismic events occurred on Etna with ML ranging between 0.4 and 3.4. Several regional earthquakes from Greece and Albania also occurred up to ML6.1. These seismic sources allows for investigating the response of the fibre and the detectability thresholds of iDAS and FEBUS A1 in urban areas with heterogeneous installation conditions of the telecommunication cable (cased conduit, attached conduit, aerial track). We perform data analysis to characterize DAS amplitude and frequency responses to better estimate the coupling of the fibre to the ground.

Knowledge of the spatio-temporal changes in the characteristics and distribution of subsurface fluids is key to properly addressing important societal issues, including: sustainable management of energy resources (e.g., hydrocarbons and geothermal energy), management of water resources, and assessment of hazard (e.g., volcanic eruptions). Gravimetry is highly attractive because it can detect changes in subsurface mass, thus providing a window into processes that involve deep fluids. However, high cost and operating features associated with current instrumentation seriously limits the practical field use of this geophysical method. The NEWTON-g project proposes a radical change of paradigm for gravimetry through the development of a field- compatible measuring system (the gravity imager), able to real-time monitor the evolution of the subsurface mass changes. This system includes an array of low- costs microelectromechanical systems-based relative gravimeters, anchored on an absolute quantum gravimeter. It will provide imaging of gravity changes, associated with variations in subsurface fluid properties, with unparalleled spatio-temporal resolution. During the final ∼2 years of NEWTON-g, the gravity imager will be field tested in the summit of Mt. Etna volcano (Italy), where frequent gravity fluctuations, easy access to the active structures and the presence of a multiparameter monitoring system (including traditional gravimeters) ensure an excellent natural laboratory for testing the new tools. Insights from the gravity imager will be used to i) improve our knowledge of the cause- effect relationships between volcanic processes and gravity changes observable at the surface and ii) develop strategies to best incorporate the gravity data into hazards assessments and mitigation plans. A successful implementation of NEWTON-g will open new doors for geophysical exploration.

Results of passive seismic surveys, in terms of both amplification and polarization effects in a section of the Tremestieri Etneo Fault (Sicily Eastern center - Catania) are discussed. For the purpose, velocimetric and accelerometric records of seismic ambient noise were analyzed. The polarization analysis of particle motion was performed and azimuthally dependent resonant frequencies were estimated. Ambient noise data were also used to assess the dynamic properties of a reinforced concrete building, located on the fault zone. The fundamental modes have been estimated through ambient noise recordings acquired by three-directional accelerometers, installed at the highest accessible floor and outside the building. The study revealed a clear oriented seismic amplification in the fault zone. This effect was observed in intensely jointed rock masses, located inside the fault area, as the result of specific geometries and significant directional impedance contrasts characterizing the area under study. The analyses show that the direction of the largest resonance motions has transversal relationship with the dominant fracture orientation. The directional amplification is inferred to be produced by stiffness anisotropy of the fault damage zone, with larger seismic motions high angle to the fractures. The results obtained are in complete agreement with those obtained by a previous study which analyzed the fault section located to the north-west. Finally, comparing the dynamic properties of the school building and the vibrational characteristics of the soil in the direction of maximum amplification, no clear resonant effect in the soil-structure interaction has been observed.

In recent years, seismological studies in Antarctica have contributed plenty of new knowledge in many fields of earth science. Moreover, acoustic investigations are now also considered a powerful tool that provides insights for many different objectives, such as analyses of regional climate-related changes and studies of volcanic degassing and explosive activities. However, installation and maintenance of scientific instrumentation in Antarctica can be really challenging. Indeed, the instruments have to face the most extreme climate on the planet. They must be tolerant of very low temperatures and robust enough to survive strong winds. Moreover, one of the most critical tasks is powering a remote system year-round at polar latitudes. In this work, we present a novel seismo-acoustic station designed to work reliably in polar regions. To enable year-round seismo-acoustic data collection in such a remote, extreme environment, a hybrid powering system is used, integrating solar panels, a wind generator, and batteries. A power management system was specifically developed to either charge the battery bank or divert energy surplus to warm the enclosure or release the excess energy to the outside environment. Finally, due to the prohibitive environmental conditions at most Antarctic installation sites, the station was designed to be deployed quickly.

The Stromboli geophysical experiment, performed to acquire onshore and offshore seismic data through a combined on-land and marine network, was finalized to reconstruct the seismic tomography of the volcano and to investigate the deep structures and the location of magma chambers. A detailed swath bathymetry around the volcano has also been acquired by the R/V Urania Multibeam. In particular, high resolution bathymetry of the 'Sciara del Fuoco' area allows to image the present-day seafloor setting of the area involved by the submarine slide of 2002-12-30. During the experiment wide angle refraction seismics was performed all around the Stromboli volcano by a 4 GI-GUN tuned array. The data were recorded by the permanent seismic network of the INGV and 20 temporary stations and 10 OBS deployed on the SE, SW and NE submerged flanks of the volcano after detailed morpho-bathymetric analysis.
