Safe, secure, suitable housing is often an unattainable reality for kaumātua (older Māori aged 55 years and over in this study) in Aotearoa New Zealand. Kaumātua, unfortunately, are at the forefront of the housing crisis, and struggle to find housing which meets their most basic needs. Therefore, many organisations are considering the development of urban papakāinga to meet their needs. The purpose of this study is to assess the needs of kaumātua currently in temporary, emergency or state housing situations to understand their perspectives about what factors enable successful urban papakāinga. The research design and methodology in this article apply a multi-method observational approach, guided by the He Pikinga Waiora (HPW) Implementation Framework. The main findings in this study include five cultural characteristics necessary within urban papakāinga developments; whanaungatanga (connections); kaitiakitanga (environmental care/ guardianship); manaakitanga (care for others); rangatiratanga (leadership, autonomy, or control); and haumarutanga (safety/security). In addition, key correlates of wellbeing indicators included housing suitability, community connection and a safe neighbourhood. Background: Social determinants of health (SDOH) impact health disparities, though little is known about the effects of SDOH on pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (POHCA). Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized the NEMSIS Database to obtain nationwide POHCA data from 2021 to 2023. Outcomes included performance of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) usage, and obtainment of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). SDOH data was obtained from the US Census Bureau and included minority race/ethnicities status, poverty levels, and educational attainment of the community where POCHAs occurred. Women are the fastest-growing segment of the incarcerated population and experience high rates of cumulative trauma exposure, mental illness, and PTSD. The aim of this study is to assess the implementation of a peer-led Seeking Safety (an evidence-based intervention for addressing trauma and addiction) pilot program for women in jail. Guided by principles from community-based participatory research and cooperative inquiry, participant surveys were analyzed (secondary data) using descriptive methods (n = 60), and qualitative interviews with program facilitators were conducted and analyzed using a general inductive approach (n = 7). Peer-led Seeking Safety is feasible, acceptable, and appropriate for women in jail, with high levels of participant satisfaction. We describe several “lessons learned” related to the jail context, including structure and security processes and vicarious and retraumatization experiences among facilitators. Preventing facilitator burnout is necessary for the sustainability of the program. Future implementations of Seeking Safety in jails should consider the lessons learned in this study.

Measles is a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable airborne-transmitted viral infection of which there has been a recent resurgence of cases worldwide over the past year, including in countries such as the UK, which had previously successfully achieved endemic measles elimination through vaccination programmes. Measles is typically a self-limiting illness, but can rarely cause severe, life-threatening disease, particularly when complicated by respiratory or neurological involvement. These severe complications are not typically seen in the absence of immunosuppression. We describe a rare case of severe measles with pneumonitis in an immunocompetent adult necessitating admission to an intensive care unit (ICU).

This research examines the subjective experiences of 10–11-year-old students participating in a social-emotional Education Program on Forgiveness and Agape Love (EPFAL) in Israel. The EPFAL is designed to help students acquire a social-emotional tool to help them deal with the wrongs, vulnerabilities, and injustices they will likely experience later in life. The EPFAL took place as part of a larger international research project evaluating the program’s effectiveness in enhancing students’ well-being and improving the class environment in Northern Ireland, Taiwan, and Israel. The present article presents findings from qualitative, semi-structured interviews of forty students and thirteen teachers who participated in the study in Israel and field notes of class observations conducted during data collection for the larger study. A thematic analysis of the findings suggests that students found the EPFAL interesting, enjoyable, and valuable. The participants experienced cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes, including changes in the perception of forgiveness. They experienced a sense of empowerment and openness, reduced anger and empathy, and learned to talk about their feelings. This study demonstrates how emotional, behavioral, and cognitive transformations promoted by the EPFAL affect children’s relationships with friends and family and improve the classroom atmosphere.

Abstract The foci of voluminous bibliometric studies on ‘language and linguistics’ research are limited to specific sub-topics with little regional context. Given the paucity of relevant literature, we are relatively uninformed about the regional trends of ‘language and linguistics’ research. This paper aims to analyze research developments in the field of ‘language and linguistics’ in 13 Asian countries: China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey. This study probed 30,515 articles published between 2000 and 2021, assessing each within four major bibliometric perspectives: (1) productivity, (2) authorship and collaborations, (3) top keywords, and (4) research impact. The results show that, in Asian ‘language and linguistics’ research, the relative contributions made by the 13 countries comprised 85% of the total number of articles produced in Asia. The other 28 Asian countries’ output, for the past two decades, never surpassed that of the individual 13 countries. Among the 13 countries, the most prolific were China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan; they especially published most articles in international core journals. In contrast, Indonesia, Iran, and Malaysia published more in regional journals. Traditionally, research on each country’s national language(s) and dialects were chiefly conducted throughout a period of 22 years. In addition, coping with internationalization worldwide, from 2010 onward, topics related to ‘English’ were of burgeoning interest among Asian researchers. Asian countries often collaborated with each other, and they also exerted a high degree of research influence on each other. The present study was designed to contribute to the literature on the comprehensive bibliometric analyses of Asian ‘language and linguistics’ research.

PURPOSE This study aimed to explore and analyze research impact of Korean ’Kinesiology’ studies, especially in the aspects of international research impact gauged by the citation counts from Scopus bibliometric database. This study contributes to relevant literature in that it is the first endeavour to evaluate the pattern about how the entire Korean ’Kinesiology’ articles have been cited in international articles. METHODS TTwo types of sample articles were collected in this paper. Firstly, 19,867 target articles published in 23 KCI-accredited Korean ’Kinesiology’ related journals from 2001 to 2015. For the Korean target articles, secondly, international citing articles that took advantage of target articles as references were collected from Elsevier’s Scopus database separately. RESULTS As a result, just 5% of the target articles were cited at least once for five years after publication. The topics of top cited research topics include ‘exercise’, ‘physical activity,’ ‘Alzheimer’s disease, ‘ ’body composition’ and ‘insulin resistance’. Besides, the Korean 'Kinesiology’ articles were the most influential to articles about ‘Medicine,’ ‘Health Professions,’ ‘Multidisciplinary,’ ‘Social Sciences,’ and ‘Nursing’. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that one Korean ’Kinesiology’ article was cited 0.09 times on an average in international Scopus-indexed articles. Considering that the average number of citations in domestic articles is 5.6 times, the international citations of Korean ’Kinesiology’ research still have much room for growth. However, this study confirmed that the scope of the international impact is not limited to a few countries, but is spreading to various countries, and its impact has been growing in recent years.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to analyze various citation patterns such as the scope and intensity of the academic influence of Korean "Kinesiology" studies. METHODS To this end, this paper collected and analyzed 17,693 target articles published in 22 KCI-accredited “Kinesiology” related journals from 2001 to 2014, and 98,941 citing cases that took advantage of target articles as references. Specifically, this paper analyzed the citation pattern by dividing it into two parts. First, this paper analyzed the distribution of citations in individual target articles and the top-cited articles and top-cited researchers. Second, this paper also analyzed the citing articles; such as in which journal, what academic field, and in what pattern the “Kinesiology” target articles were cited. RESULTS As a result, 15% of the target articles were not cited at all for five years after publication, while 6.8% of papers were cited more than 17 times, which was exceptionally more cited compared to the majority of target articles. There were no research topics exclusively exerting influence in Korean "Kinesiology" research, but relatively many cited thesis topics include 'self-management, 'leisure statement', 'psychological well-being', 'self-confidence', 'service quality', and 'leisure flow'. Besides, the Korean "Kinesiology" articles accounted for 76% of the total of about 98,000 citations, having greater influence within the same academic field than other academic fields. CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to the relevant literature in that it is one of the early endeavors to study the citation pattern for the entire Korean kinesiology articles.

Abstract Background Children’s consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with obesity, diabetes, and dental decay. California’s Healthy Beverages in Child Care Act (AB 2084) requires all licensed child care centers and family child care homes to comply with healthy beverages standards, however many licensed providers in California are unaware of the law and few are fully compliant with the law’s requirements. The aim of the current project is to describe the development of a self-paced online training on best practices and implementation of AB 2084 in English and Spanish for family child care home and child care center providers; and to evaluate the feasibility, defined as being accessible, acceptable, and satisfactory to providers, of this new online course. Methods The project was broken into two main stages: (1) development of the online course; and (2) evaluation of the final online course. The first stage was completed in five phases: (1) identify relevant course content and develop narration script; (2) conduct in-person focus groups with child care providers to review and edit the content; (3) adapt course content and translate for Spanish-speaking providers; (4) build the online course and resources; and (5) pilot online course and evaluate accessibility. The second stage, evaluation of the acceptability and satisfaction of the final course was rated on a Likert scale from 1 to 4; the evaluation was completed as part of a larger randomized control trial with 43 child care providers. The course features four key requirements of AB 2084 as the main sections of the course (milk, sweetened beverages, juice, and water), plus background information about beverages and children’s health, special topics including caring for children with special needs, family engagement, written policies, and child engagement. Results The child care providers who completed the evaluation found the online training was easily understandable (median(Q1,Q3,IQR) = 4 (4,4,0)), included new information (3 (1, 3, 4)), provided useful resources (4(4,4,0)), and was rated with high overall satisfaction (3 (1, 3, 4)). Conclusion Online training in English and Spanish designed for child care providers is a feasible medium to deliver important health messages to child care providers in an accessible, acceptable, and satisfactory manner.

Renal artery stenosis (RAS) typically involves varying degrees of calcification, and treatment can be fraught with risk and suboptimal results. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) uses shockwaves to fragment calcium to facilitate angioplasty. We present a case of severe bilateral RAS successfully treated with IVL and stenting after conventional methods had failed. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.)

Anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) glomerulonephritis is a rare disease caused by autoantibodies against the glomerular basement membrane. Atypical anti-GBM nephritis is clinically less aggressive and characterized by the absence of circulating autoantibodies to the basement membrane. A previously healthy 53-year-old white woman presented with a rising creatinine over a short observation period. Renal biopsy, urinary sediment, and laboratory testing confirmed the diagnosis of atypical anti-GBM disease. She received plasmapheresis, steroids, and cyclophosphamide. She developed hemorrhagic cystitis early in the treatment from oral cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate mofetil was substituted as a first-line drug. She responded favorably and continued on mycophenolate mofetil without evidence of relapse. Despite the absence of circulating autoantibodies, a diagnosis of atypical anti-GBM nephritis should not be excluded if a high index of clinical suspicion exists. Early renal biopsy should be considered. Mycophenolate mofetil may be a reasonable replacement for oral cyclophosphamide in the treatment of atypical anti-GBM disease when cyclophosphamide is contraindicated.

Numerous pathologies can contribute to photophobia. When considering light transduction alone, photophobia may be triggered through melanopsin pathways (non-image forming), rod and cone pathways (image-forming), or some combination of the two. We evaluated a 39 year old female patient with longstanding idiopathic photophobia that was exacerbated by blue light, and tested her by presenting visual stimuli in an event-related fMRI experiment. Analysis showed significantly greater activation in bilateral pulvinar nuclei, associated with the melanopsin intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC) visual pathway, and their activation is consistent with the patient's report that blue light differentially evoked photophobia. This appears to be the first demonstration of functional activation of the ipRGC pathway during photophobia in a patient. Migraineurs show hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli at various stages throughout the migraine cycle. A number of putative processes have been implicated including a dysfunction in the descending pain modulatory system in which the periaqueductal gray (PAG) is considered to play a crucial role. Recurring migraine attacks could progressively perturb this system, lowering the threshold for future attacks, and contribute to disease chronification. Here, we investigated PAG connectivity with other brain regions during a noxious thermal stimulus to determine changes in migraineurs, and associations with migraine frequency. 21 episodic migraine patients and 22 matched controls were included in the study. During functional MRI, a thermode was placed on the subjects’ temple delivering noxious and non-noxious heat stimuli. A psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analysis was carried out to examine pain-induced connectivity of the PAG with other brain regions. The PPI analysis showed increased PAG connectivity with the S1 face representation area and the supplementary motor area, an area involved with pain expectancy, in patients with higher frequency of migraine attacks. PAG connectivity with regions involved with the descending pain modulatory system (i.e., prefrontal cortex) was decreased in the migraineurs versus healthy individuals. Our results suggest that high frequency migraineurs may have diminished resistance to cephalic pain and a less efficient inhibitory pain modulatory response to external stressor (i.e., noxious heat). The findings support the notion that in migraine there is less effective pain modulation (viz., decreased pain inhibition or increased pain facilitation), potentially contributing to increased occurrence of attacks/chronification of migraine.

Background: Postural tremor can sometimes occur in spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). However, the prevalence and clinical characteristics of postural tremor in SCAs are poorly understood, and whether SCA patients with postural tremor have different ataxia progression is not known.Methods: We studied postural tremor in 315 patients with SCA1, 2, 3, and 6 recruited from the Clinical Research Consortium for Spinocerebellar Ataxias (CRC-SCA), which consists of 12 participating centers in the United States, and we evaluated ataxia progression in these patients from January 2010 to August 2012.Results: Among 315 SCA patients, postural tremor was most common in SCA2 patients (SCA1, 5.8%; SCA2, 27.5%; SCA3, 12.4%; SCA6, 16.9%; p = 0.007). SCA3 patients with postural tremor had longer CAG repeat expansions than SCA3 patients without postural tremor (73.67 ± 3.12 vs. 70.42 ± 3.96, p = 0.003). Interestingly, SCA1 and SCA6 patients with postural tremor had a slower rate of ataxia progression (SCA1, β = –0.91, p < 0.001; SCA6, β = –1.28, p = 0.025), while SCA2 patients with postural tremor had a faster rate of ataxia progression (β = 1.54, p = 0.034). We also found that the presence of postural tremor in SCA2 patients could be influenced by repeat expansions of ATXN1 (β = –1.53, p = 0.037) and ATXN3 (β = 0.57, p = 0.018), whereas postural tremor in SCA3 was associated with repeat lengths in TBP (β = 0.63, p = 0.041) and PPP2R2B (β = –0.40, p = 0.032).Discussion: Postural tremor could be a clinical feature of SCAs, and the presence of postural tremor could be associated with different rates of ataxia progression. Genetic interactions between ataxia genes might influence the brain circuitry and thus affect the clinical presentation of postural tremor.
