The restriction of nutrient intake by beef cows during pregnancy may influence the progeny postpartum growth potential, therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of nutritional restriction and adequate nutrition or overfeeding during the final third of gestation of the crossbred cows (Charolais x Nellore) kept in the Pampa biome, on the productive performance of the progeny up to 15 mo of age. Eighty-three (83) cows were divided into: control cows on natural pasture under nutritional restriction (RES); Supplementation to meet 100 % of requirements (REQ); Supplementation above requirements (HIGH). REQ and HIGH calves had higher body weight at birth compared to calves from RES cows (39.28, 39.13 vs 34.58 kg), without influences on postnatal performance. Females from REQ and HIGH cows presented better postnatal performance and consequently higher weight at 12 mo of age in compared to offspring RES cows (300.71 and 311.79 vs 259.47 kg). These female calves reached 60 % of early adult weight (358 and 345 vs 405 d) and had a higher percentage of breeding at twelve months of age (73.98 and 84.08 vs 34.08 %) than females from RES cows. Supplementing cows to meet 100% requirements, as well as overfeeding during the final third of gestation, improves offspring performance at twelve months of age, with males and females responding differently to maternal nutritional insults during this period.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of live weight at first mating on reproductive performance in the first and second reproductive years. For that purpose, the reproductive history of 221 heifers mated for the first time between the years of 2003 and 2012 was evaluated. Heifers were grouped into three weight classes at the age of 24 months: 50-59.9% (55%), 60-69.9% (65%), and 70-80% (75%). The pregnancy rate in the first reproductive year in heifers from weight classes 55%, 65%, and 75% was 38.0%, 56.4%, and 69.0%, respectively. The pregnancy rate in the second reproductive year was not affected by weight at first mating (p > 0.05) and corresponded to 41.6%; 42.1%, and 50.4% in the three weight classes, respectively. The weight class of heifers before mating at the age of 24 months affected reproductive performance at first mating but did not increase the pregnancy rate in the second reproductive year.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of various dietary energy levels on the carcass and meat characteristics of feedlot-finished steers. A total of 27 purebred and crossbred Charolais and Nellore steers were used, with a mean initial age of 22 months and weight of 253 kg. The animals were allotted to a completely randomized design with three treatments and nine replicates each. Dietary treatments were arranged so that the average forage to concentrate ratio (FCR) was equivalent to that of a constant FCR treatment. The treatments consisted of CT (constant FCR at 60 to 40), CT5 (starting with 70: 30 FCR and finishing with 50: 50 FCR, that is, a mean overall FCR of 60: 40), and CT10 (starting with 80: 20 FCR and finishing with 40: 60, that is, a mean overall FCR of 60: 40). The dietary treatments did not affect slaughter weight, carcass weight, carcass conformation, physiological maturity, subcutaneous fat thickness, ribeye area, marbling score, and carcass measurements or the yield of commercial cuts. Chilling loss was higher in CT10 steers (2.41%) than in CT (2.26%) and CT5 (2.15%).

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os componentes não carcaça de novilhas terminadas em pastagem de Tifton 85, suplementadas com três diferentes fontes energéticas. Foram utilizadas 30 novilhas, Charolês x Nelore, com idade e peso médio inicial de 26 meses e 274,5 kg. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, sendo as fontes energéticas utilizadas: grão de milho, grão de aveia branca ou grão de cevada, o nível de suplementação foi de 1% PV, com 10 repetições por estratégia de suplementação empregada. Os pesos de abate (PA), de corpo vazio (PCVZ) e a relação PCVZ/PA foram similares entre estratégias de suplementação. O peso total de órgãos relativos a 100 kg de PCVZ, foi superior para os animais suplementados com milho, 3,43% PCVZ. O peso relativo de rúmen-retículo foi superior para as fêmeas que receberam cevada, 1,72% PCVZ, porém o peso do trato gastrointestinal não diferiu entre as fontes energéticas utilizadas. O peso dos componentes periféricos e o total de gorduras não foram alteradas pelas diferentes fontes energéticas utilizadas. A suplementação com grão de aveia branca reduz o rendimento de órgãos internos e o rendimento de partes do trato gastrintestinal, em relação ao grão de milho e à cevada, respectivamente.

Objetivou-se comparar os parâmetros morfogênicos de pastagens de milheto e capim sudão na Depressão Central do Rio Grande do Sul, manejadas com pastejo contínuo, subdivididos em dois períodos de avaliação. Os tratamentos consistiram em: Milheto = pastagem de milheto (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) e Sudão = pastagem de capim sudão (Sorghum bicolor cv. sudanense); ambos tratamentos submetidos ao pastejo contínuo com vacas de descarte. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com 2 tratamentos e 2 períodos. A altura de dossel (32,69 vs 20,29 cm), taxa de aparecimento foliar (0,147 vs 0,080), número total de folhas por perfilho (4,74 vs 3,06), número de folhas vivas (4,26 vs 2,55), número de folhas jovens (1,92 vs 1,47) e número de folhas adultas (2,34 vs 1,08) foram superiores aos perfilhos de pastagens de milheto, enquanto a taxa de senescência foi superior em perfilhos de capim sudão (0,511cm) do que nos perfilhos de milheto (0,495cm). O número total de folhas (4,28 vs 3,53) e número de folhas mortas (0,58 vs 0,38) foram maiores no ciclo inicial de pastejo. Pastagens de milheto apresentam maior potencial vegetativo, ao pastejo, em comparação a pastagens de capim sudão.

Objetivou-se identificar quais as variáveis do comportamento ingestivo, padrões de deslocamento e parâmetros produtivos da pastagem explicam a maior parte dos resultados entre os níveis de suplementação ofertados a novilhas terminadas em Tifton 85 (Cynodon dactylon). Utilizou-se a análise de componentes principais para identificar quais variáveis foram relevantes. Na análise, oito variáveis, tempo de pastejo, tempo de ócio, número de estações alimentares/dia, tempo em cada estação, taxa de bocado/dia, massa e oferta de lâminas foliares e relação folha:colmo, explicaram 80,5% da variação dos resultados. Novilhas exclusivamente em pastagem tiveram maior tempo de pastejo e taxa de bocado/dia e menor tempo em ócio. Novilhas que receberam 0,4% de peso corporal de suplemento visitaram maior número de estações alimentares, enquanto novilhas que receberam 1,2% de suplemento permaneceram mais tempo em cada estação alimentar. No primeiro período de avaliação, as novilhas tiveram maior tempo de pastejo, número de estações alimentares/dia, taxa de bocado, massa e oferta de lâminas foliares. O nível 0,8% de suplemento, não influenciou as variáveis avaliadas. Os padrões de deslocamento e o comportamento ingestivo de novilhas recebendo ou não suplemento são influenciadas pelas características estruturais do pasto.

In this article we research the influence of different sources of carbohydrates (corn, soybean hulls or wheat bran) upon the digestive behavior of 24 confined castrated steers with an initial average age and weight of 20 months and 330 kg born from the cross between Charolais and Nellore. The diet was composed of 40% sorghum silage and 60% concentrate. The time spent on total ruminating (an average of 454.6 min/day) was not influenced by the source of carbohydrate. The animals from the wheat bran treatment spent less time idle (718 min) in relation to those on the corn and soybean hulls treatments, which did not differ between themselves (an average of 792 min/day). The steers from the wheat bran treatment remained less time feeding (184 min/day) compared with those fed the other treatments, whose average time of permanence in this activity was 214 minutes per day. The other studied variables did not present a significant difference between the treatments. Inclusion of wheat bran in the diet of the confined steers results in less spent time idle, while steers feeding on soybean hulls spend less time feeding. The use of corn, soybean hulls, or wheat bran in the diet of the confined steers does not affect the total cudding time.

The effect of frequency of supply of forage (V) and concentrate (C) on the performance of cows and heifers in feedlot was studied. The treatments were the following frequencies in the supply: 2 V/C= V and C twice daily; 1 V/C= V and C once daily; 1 V/2C= once V and C twice daily, 1 V/3C= once V and C three times a day, for the cows or heifers. The experimental design was completely randomized in factorial arrangement 4 x 2, with four replications. There was no significant interaction between frequency of supplying and category animal. The dry matter intake (DMI) was superior for the animals fed 1 V/2C or 1 V/3C a day in relation with the supply of 2 V/C and 1 V/C, presenting values of 11.7; 11.4; 10.6 and 10.7 kg, respectively. The average daily gain (ADG) was not influenced by the frequency of supplying. The DMI was higher in cows (12.6 kg) than heifers (9.57 kg), having no difference in the weight gain. Increasing frequency of feeding the concentrate to two or three times a day, provided greater consumption, not influencing the weight gain of cows and heifers confined.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da substituicao total do farelo de soja por ureia protegida ou comum sobre as caracteristicas de carcaca e da carne de novilhos terminados em confinamento. Utilizaram-se 27 novilhos, puros e mesticos Charoles x Nelore, com idade de 20 ± (1,5) meses e peso medio inicial de 293 ± (31) kg, distribuidos em tres tratamentos: Ureia Protegida (concentrado contendo ureia de degradacao lenta); Farelo de Soja (concentrado contendo farelo de soja) e Ureia Comum (concentrado contendo ureia comum). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso (predominância racial), com tres tratamentos e nove repeticoes, sendo o animal a unidade experimental. Os tratamentos alimentares nao influenciaram nos pesos e rendimentos de carcaca quente e fria. A espessura de gordura que recobre a carcaca nao foi alterada, de acordo com as dietas estudadas, sendo em media de 3,97 ± (0,94) mm. As medidas e a compacidade da carcaca nao foram alteradas pelas dietas, apresentando valores medios de 127,55; 74,86; 39,86; 38,84 e 25,72 cm para comprimento de carcaca, perna e braco, perimetro de braco e espessura de coxao, respectivamente. Observou-se diferenca significativa no marmoreio, sendo que a carne dos animais do tratamento farelo de soja foram superiores aos do tratamento com ureia protegida (3,72 vs 2,28 pontos).

This study aimed to verify the effects of supplying different energy patterns on ingestive behavior of feedlot-finished cattle. Twenty-seven pure and crossbred Charolais or Nellore steers with an initial average age and weight of 22 months and 252.8 kg, respectively, were used. Three treatments were carried out, two of them with an increasing rate of concentrate in the diet during the finishing period (IT5 and IT10) and one with constant roughage to concentrate ratio (CT). The experimental design was a completely randomized design with three treatments, five periods, and nine replications. Feeding time was higher for CT (4.31 hours) when compared to IT5 (3.85 hours). Steers from the treatment IT10 remained longer in lying leisure (8.14 hours) when compared to the treatment CT (7.24 hours). A superiority of chewing per ruminated bolus was observed in IT10 (58.59 seconds) when compared to IT5 (54.11 seconds) whereas a higher number of ruminated bolus was observed in TC5 (534.68 ruminated bolus day?1) when compared to IT10 (473.77 ruminated bolus day?1). Animals from CT presented a higher dry matter intake (9.54 kg day?1) than those from IT10 (8.63 kg day?1). Steers from CT and IT5 showed a higher NDF intake (3.63 and 3.58 kg NDF day?1, respectively) when compared to IT10 (3.29 kg NDF day?1). The constant energy pattern increases feeding time and dry matter intake. The one of less vigorous growth increases the number of bolus ruminated per day, while the one of more vigorous growth increases idle time and chews per bolus and decreases the intake of neutral detergent fiber.

O presente estudo objetivou avaliar os parâmetros de comportamento ingestivo de novilhos terminados em confinamento, alimentados com silagem de capim papuã e silagem de sorgo. Cada tratamento foi composto por seis animais com peso e idade média inicial de 245 kg e 20 meses, respectivamente, e grupos genéticos de cruzas Nelore (N) com Charolês (C). A dieta foi composta por relação volumoso:concentrado, 50:50 (base na MS). As atividades comportamentais foram observadas a cada cinco minutos, no decorrer de vinte e quatro horas, durante oito dias, distribuídos ao longo do período de confinamento. O uso dos diferentes tipos de volumoso não interferiu no tempo de alimentação, ruminação e ócio, com médias de 4,29; 11,52 e 8,06h, respectivamente. As variáveis número de refeições e tempo de refeições diárias também não foram influenciadas pelos tratamentos, sendo respectivamente7,72 e 35,79min. O número de mastigadas por bolo ruminal, tempo de mastigada por bolo, número de bolos, número de mastigadas diárias e tempo de mastigação total expressos em h/dia, não diferiram (P > 0,05) entre os tratamentos, apresentando respectivamente valores médios de 59; 53; 550,44; 32059,5 e 12,36. Não foi constatada influência dos diferentes volumosos sobre o comportamento ingestivo dos novilhos confinados.
